occupy the bed, school and mall

cici was very vigorously licking herself while occupying the bed …

and then fell asleep growling and woofing and making all sorts of weird noises… one of these days I will figure out how to use the webcam and video and get it online… so you can view and hear the action…

suffice it to say my polka dot princess is hilarious…

she gets 99% of the bed, I get 1%…

she eats 99% of the food in the fridge, I get 1%…

oh well…

we’d love a costume and gig like Lulu’s… pit bulls should occupy schools, libraries, shopping malls and public places everywhere… pit bulls already occupy too many shelters…perhaps if pit bulls were more visible then people would stop banning them when they see firsthand how silly, goofy and sweet they are… oh well, a girl can dream, can’t she?

and don’t forget when you go shopping for holiday gifts, you can support your local shelter/pit bull rescue at Adoptashelter.com, here’s how:

pumpkins and costumes and desserts, oh my

who else but Rachael Ray would have a pumpkin carved with her dog’s face on it???

some people are saying that wearing an Occupy Wall Street related costumes are THE cool costumes this Halloween…  people could dress up as a mean cop, banker, a corporation, a 1% greedy pig, clueless GOP politician, a cash cow and/or a protester…

http://theweek.com/article/slideshow/220443

Cici wanted me to let you know about the messages that she is considering to have on her signs for her costume:

I am the 1% of pit bulls that has a good home

walk a few miles in my paws…

humans judge me by my looks

sub-humans abandon, abuse, fight, and neglect me

sub-humans kill me

humans hate me because I’m adorable

humans say mean things about me

humans lie about me

sub-humans use me to pretend they are tough

pit bulls for peace

pit bulls against  fat cats

cici speaks: occupy the bed, gets better food than my mama, occupy the chair, occupy the fridge, hah !

please do not dress your dogs up like these people did on Wendy Williams show

http://gawker.com/5853969/its-time-to-stop-dressing-up-your-pets-for-halloween

Beware of these dogs, trick or treat…

a fun treat for any doggie snack time are these meaty cupcakes… for Halloween and other fall/autumn holidays, you could substitute sweet potatoes for the regular taters…

http://doggydessertchef.com/2011/09/23/meatloaf-muffins/

you can also make some Halloween dog cookies with pumpkin and peanut butter… you can substitute rice or other flour if you do not want whole wheat…

PLUS, you can make pumpkin chocolate recipes for snacks (for humans/kids)…YUM-O…

heroes welcome: adopt a Vicktory dog

Today am feeling sad about a neighbor’s sweet puppy Coco, a chi mix, a tiny dog with markings similar to my Cici… the neighbor brought Coco to me last night for help and assistance, and wanted me to keep her… I could not do so, the dog is only six months old, not house trained nor fixed. At the time they visited I was reeling from the violent police attack on Occupy Oakland as well as just found out that the dogs below are up for adoption, so I was a bit scattered. I called my friend and dog rescuer for assistance and she told me that the people would have to surrender the dog to the SPCA and then another rescue group could get the puppy and get her adopted.

looking back, I feel sick to my stomach. The boy David was crying when I told him this. We brought him and Coco to another neighbor to see if they might want the pup to play with their dog. They said no. If I had it all to do over again, I’d still be knocking on doors until someone said yes.

The sweet shy little puppy, I kissed her head several times and she kissed me back… I do NOT want her to go to the SPCA. She could get lost in the system. I called them this morning and was not very assured. They have a lot of chi’s and chi mixes up for adoption. The gal was ok but there are four gals and some kind of evaluation process. IF Coco passes the eval then she goes to adoption. If not, she gets euthanized. The shelter system is BARBARIC.

So I worry about what happened last night to Coco. The mother of David told me that her friend was going to pick up the dog and keep her for the night. Apparently, the father or her boyfriend, is mean and told David that the dog could not stay. And the mother does not have a car to take Coco to the SPCA. Hoping that the friend came by and got Coco and can take care of the puppy.

Now am thinking of all the things I should have done… I should have taken a photo of Coco, I should have gotten their phone number and address and last name, we talked about it but it did not happen, I should have let David sleep in the living room with the dog last night and so on and on…I pray Coco and David are ok.

Cici, who used to cuddle with me ALL THE TIME, every day for five years, has not been lately, all of a sudden, for about the last month, has come up to me today and is snuggling right beside me… what a comfort she is to me !

Currently, at Best Friends Animal Society, there are FIVE Vicktory Dogs who are up for adoption. Don’t you think it is time they go home??? It HAS been 3 1/2 years. Ellen, Squeaker, Georgia, Ray and Oscar♥. please share.

Little Red

10-26-11 I’ve been thinking about the Vicktory dogs Georgia, Oscar and Squeeker. They have been in sanctuary for over 3 1/2 years and every year that goes by is one year less they will live in a home. (Little came home at 8 1/2 years old). These dogs are ready or nearly ready to find their forever homes. I hope people will reach out and adopt them as soon as possible so they have a chance at a happy home. I can’t tell you how close I came to NOT applying to adopt Little. I had been watching her progress & sponsoring her for over 3 years. I day-dreamed about adopting her but I thought there would be many, many other people with pitbull experience who wanted he. I didn’t think I would be considered since I had 4 other dogs. I met Little twice & spent a week volunteering in her unit. The last day I was at BF — the last hour before I was leaving for home — I got up the nerve to go to the adoptions office and ask about her. I expected to be told that she already had a home — as soon as she passed her CGC. I was floored when I found out no one else had completed an application. Kristi told me there were people interested, but no applications. That was all I needed, I started the process that day and 6 months later she was home. The moral of this story — if you think you are interested in adopting these dogs – go for it. Don’t wait and expect someone else to do it. They need homes now and they are getting on in years. It would be a tragedy if these dogs pass away without ever knowing the joy of living in a home. Little’s Mom

How to Adopt

One of the most awesome dogs that have already been adopted (they are ALL awesome), Cherry Garcia was adopted by a family in New England who have another pibble and have two cats. One of the cats, Walker, really helped Cherry settle into his new home.  They are best buddies, still regularly snuggle together and groom each other. Cherry (a Very Important Dog) and  family go to lots of events to show how fabulous Pitbulls are. Even after the horrible situation from his past, Cherry shows no aggression toward anyone. Like all dogs, he just wants to be loved.  Check out the progress of Cherry, Ginger Girl, Little Red, Handsome Dan, Hector the Pitbull and others on Facebook.

These dogs are shy and need the confidence that comes from being loved every day by a family. You can follow Cherry’s progress at Vicktory 4 Cherry. If you think you’re ready to bring one of these special dogs into your life, contact Best Friends Animal Society at dogadoptions@bestfriends.org.

trick or treat?

most dogs would probably have a hard time choosing between tricks and treats… since they like to do both, EAT and do naughty tricks… Cici decided instead of taking a walk with me yesterday morning as she normally does, that it was better to run away and hide… what gets into that dog’s brain is beyond me… so she did not get her morning walk, nor did she bug me all day for a walk… maybe it’s because I am fixing up the garden??? nothing discernible yet… but I did give her a bone to gnaw on at some point and she seemed happy. She had taken my roommate for a walk for three hours the night before so I figured she was still worn out.

Whatever goes on in that polka dot princess head is beyond me but one thing I do know is that when it comes to treats, she is GUNG HO and all for them, healthy or not, as long as there is meat in the equation/ingredient list.

got healthy snacks for your Fido for Halloween???

you could try something delish from Mother Hubbard…. Cici has already pigged out on doggie cookies/biscuits … she thought that the Chicken and Apple ones were the best cookies she’s had in awhile… I liked the wholesome human grade and wheat free ingredients but Cici enjoyed the taste sensation…

http://www.oldmotherhubbard.com/product.aspx?&cat=1&pid=9

Ground Barley, Ground Brown Rice, Chicken, Apples, Chicken Meal, Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols, a natural source of Vitamin E), Cane Molasses, Turmeric, Eggs, Carrots, Garlic, Salt, Mixed Tocopherols (a natural preservative).

Small bite sized biscuits that a dog does not have to chew up into little pieces.   Comes in eight flavors, BacnCheese, Veggie, and more.

am sure that she would love the peanut butter cookies too… and she enjoyed eating the tiny little bitties soft and chewy snacks, too… supposed to be used for training, but oh well… she was in taste testing dog mode so I went ahead and gave her some mini bits, too. did not want to risk her pulling anymore tricks on me.  One trick a day is enough.

Patrick & Lennox update 2

http://celiasue.com/2012/07/11/for-brooke-justice-for-lennox/  RIP LENNOX

Patrick and Lennox are the perfect representatives of how Breed Discrimination harms dogs and the people who love them.

Latest on Lennox

Patrick

NJ SPCA

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has several boxes of faxes and emails that they have received over the last several months. I remain confident that the Prosecutors Office understands the importance of this case and I am hopeful that the Court proceedings will move forward with a positive outcome, most importantly for Patrick. Right now prayers are best and in the near future if I need an ” ANIMAL ARMY” I will let everyone know. Next appearance is this Friday, January 20th…………….. Capt

And the latest news regarding Lennox…

Keep in mind that nothing has been verified** What has been going around is that no decision has been made today and the Judge may have until Jan 21 to reach a decision.

most of us thought the trial date was 11-11-11. they made a mistake on the date his trial has been held off till 1-21-12. lets hope they lift the pit bull ban for the new year and stop killing all the pits and dogs that look like a pit!

as of October 19, 2011, Lennox has been given another reprieve…A point of law has been submitted which the judge will now consider. This could take up to a month. More to follow.

Lennox is still alive

http://www.northcountrygazette.org/2011/10/20/stay-of-execution-for-lennox-new-appeal-readied/

Caroline Barnes is a former veterinary nurse, owns other dogs in addition to Lennox and has fostered dogs.

The family was given 21 days to find a legal loophole in decision, to find a point of law on which to base one more appeal.

The Belfast Telegraph is reporting that the family has indeed found such a point of law and says that a spokeswoman for the Lord Chief Justice of Northern Ireland has told the newspaper that an appeal will be lodged on behalf of Lennox by Friday.

It has been reported that a source for the Belfast City Council has indicated there will be a stay of execution.

http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/local-national/northern-ireland/owners-in-final-bid-to-save-death-row-dog-lennox-16066302.html

(Am no lawyer especially not of Irish law, but could the family sue the Judge, Belfast City Council, people who lied, people who took Lennox away and people who are keeping Lennox away from the girl, etc. for their daughter’s health issues resulting from the inhumane treatment of their dog and threat of his being killed?)

A green Halloween for dogs

Dr. Al Townshend, staff veterinarian for Old Mother Hubbard, developed the tips below.

Old Mother Hubbard all natural treats at www.oldmotherhubbard.com and  at www.facebook.com/OMHpetsnacks

Tips to keep your pet safe and happy this Halloween:
  • Using flameless candles in pumpkins helps to avoid potentially harmful accidents.
  • Make sure to keep all candy out of reach of a curious nose and have plenty of high-quality, natural treats, such as Old Mother Hubbard® Soft & Chewy Bitz® for dogs, on hand for your furry friend.
  • Doorbell anxiety is common among dogs and can lead to barking and aggression which can ruin the night for you, your dog and any trick-or-treaters that come to the door.  You can help your dog get used to the sound of the doorbell by doing some “practice runs” a few days before Halloween.  Have someone stand outside and ring the doorbell, and if your dog barks, calm him or her in a soothing voice and consider offering a small treat as a reward. Repeat this exercise until your furry friend realizes the doorbell is a good thing, not something to be scared of.
  • If you plan on dressing up your pet, make sure the costume does not interfere with his or her vision, hearing, breathing or walking. Costumes should be lightweight and not too tight.  Also, loose or dangling accessories or details can present a choking hazard for your pet. Make sure to snip loose threads, beads or other hanging items before dressing your pet.
  • If you are going outside (for a parade or trick-or-treating) make sure your pet is on a leash at all times.
  • Although it may not match their costume, make sure your pet is wearing an ID or has a microchip.  With the door opening and closing all evening, curious pets may try to sneak outside and join the festivities. Reflective leashes, collars or stickers on their costumes are also a great way to help keep pets safe.
A few additional tips:

Leaving your dog outside unattended is a no no and keep your black cats inside, too.  No matter how safe you think your neighborhood is, Halloween pranksters and vandals roam the streets looking for trouble and sometimes get carried away, so don’t take any chances and keep your pets inside with you where you know they are safe.

Chocolate is not the only sweet treat that poses a risk for dogs. Sugar-free candy contains a chemical called Xylitol that can make dogs severely ill even in small doses. Candy foil and wrappers can also be very harmful, as they can cause choking or a blockage in a dog’s digestive tract. If you have kids, let them know that the dog cannot share their Halloween treats.

Halloween decorations should be kept out of your dog’s reach. Dogs love shiny, small, noisy and/or  other items that can cause serious health problems. And lights and cords can be bad news for your curious dog. A wagging tail can knock stuff made of glass over (including glass jars of treats). Keep sweet treats up high and out of reach.

Strangers in spooky masks and costumes can be very scary for your dog and  cause unnecessary stress and fear. It’s probably best to keep your dog in a separate room. Try leaving a radio or TV or CD player on to drown out the sound of the visitors.

No beer, wine or other alcoholic drinks for Fido.  Do not give any amount of alcohol to any animal. A drunk dog is no laughing matter. Alcohol is poison to dogs and can cause : vomiting, disorientation, seizures, irregular heartbeat, heart attack and death. If you have a party make sure you clean up all of the leftover drinks, as some dogs are attracted to the sweetness of beer and wine.

If you are taking your dog to a Howloween party or event, make sure that they’ve got their good manners in paw. Introduce dogs slowly and carefully to one another to avoid conflict. And do not feed dogs treats together but separately to avoid any resource guarding behaviors.

Now, go look at these hysterically funny dogs in costumes, 25 of them, very creative…what is your dog going to be this year? you could also crochet an outfit with black and orange yarn and a few other items, how about a pirate dog, polka dot princess/diva, bumble bee and/or green ghost?  Recycle, reuse, repurpose items and/or use eco friendly green materials.

update: occupation goes global

just one week ago when I wrote about the Occupy  Wall Street protests, it was below the radar, it is HUGE what has happened in just one week…. there are now 1,000+ cities that have protesters including all across the USA, Canada and Europe, even Australia. There is a group protesting the Federal Reserve as well as the London Stock Exchange.

BOSTON/Dewey Square – At 1:30 a.m. this morning, elements of the Boston Police Department, Transit Police and the Massachusetts State Police – with assistance from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department – arrested approximately 100 protestors who engaged in non-violent civil disobedience in defense of a second encampment started by #OccupyBoston activists adjacent to their existing Dewey Square encampment yesterday on a stretch of the Rose Kennedy Greenway bounded by Purchase St., Pearl St., Congress St. and Atlantic Ave.

They love making fun of the demonstrators’ looks, but it’s pretty difficult to step outside the system and live outdoors without looking a little rough in the eyes of the moneyed classes. Jesus and his disciples probably looked pretty rough to some people, too. I’m sure the rich people looked down their noses at Him after He overturned those tables.

That’s not done in polite company.

Think about it: A guy rides into town on a donkey. Then he says the moneyed interests are exerting too much influence on the government – and on some of the religious elite, too. And what was that about the wealthy? Oh, yeah – “It’s easier for a camel to pass through a needle’s eye than for a rich man to enter heaven.”

No matter what you believe or don’t believe spiritually, it’s clear that oligarchic wealth has corrupted our politics, polluted our culture, and debased our basic sense of morality.

And that’s why they’re we’re protesting. I’ve been to New York’s demonstration, and Washington’s. Next stop is LA. But they’re all over the country.

If you haven’t been to one yet, why not stop by? ‘m not an organizer, just an admirer, but consider this an official invitation: Your presence is requested as democracy – and history – unfold before us.

Blog the Change: Pit Bull Awareness

When I thought about how to honor Pit Bull Awareness Month (and how to Blog the Change), it occurred to me to do an update about Ginger… one of the three former M. Vick dogs I met in Monterey at the SPCA.    I was hoping to also get stats on pit bulls in Monterey from the SPCA but so far nada. There are about 8 pit bulls available for adoption on their website. They are inundated with a large number of chi’s right now.

But in many many shelters across the country, a majority of the dogs up for adoption and the dogs that are euthanized are pit bulls and pit bull mixes due to human ignorance about the breed. Pit bulls are abused across the board, in all ways, starved, neglected, abandoned, made to fight so humans can make money and tortured for no reason other than how they look and human fear and hatred of dogs. Every year 4-6 million healthy pets get euthanized in shelters across the USA and a high percentage of those are pit bulls and mixes.

(Updates about Patrick, the starved dog in NJ and Lennox, a dog that is not even a pit bull, who may in a week be euthanized in Belfast, Ireland …)

More about Breed Discrimination and Pibbles

Ginger and her mama are very special and fabulous ambassadors for Pit Bulls everywhere. LOVE is the KEY factor that MAKES the difference in a DOG’s Life. And Ginger personifies how great pit bulls are… goofy, loving, sweet and loyal… Even after being fought, tortured, abused, ALL of the former Vicktory dogs are a great example of the breed. Eight of the former Vick dogs are now therapy dogs. And most of the dogs are now spending time in loving homes with other dogs, kids, cats and humans. Several have their own facebook pages… Hector the Pit Bull, Handsome Dan, Cherry Garcia, Jhumpa Jones, and others. Clearly, it is NOT the dogs that cause problems, it is the humans that make a difference, one way or another.

From Stacy Dubuc, Ginger’s wonderful adopter aka doggie mama:

After being rescued from Michael Vick’s Bad Newz Kennels, Ginger made the long journey from Virginia to The SPCA for Monterey County.  Two years old at the time, she had spent most of her life in a kennel and had had very little positive interactions with humans.  She quickly went into a foster home to provide her with a quiet stable environment where she would hopefully come out of her shell.  Her early months in foster care were not easy, she was incredibly timid and would cower and hide whenever approached.  The timid shell of an animal I brought home needed way more than simple material items – she needed compassion, patience, love and some sort of understanding after the ordeal she had been through.

Our early days and months were not easy – her clinging to the back of her crate for hours on end as I cried and wondered if we would ever be friends, her fleeing from any attempt at a gentle touch, refusing to eat for days as I tried a variety of techniques to prevent her from wasting further away…it goes on and on and has probably been experienced by many a person fostering an abused animal.  We worked through those tough times and eventually became friends.

It is hard to believe but November 6th will make four years since Ginger came home with me. It has been such a pleasure watching her evolve into the confident, happy, and incredibly loving dog she is today. She loves running about the yard, going for long walks along the rec trail, naps, treats, etc.  The dog that used to cower from people is now curious and willing to meet new people. While, she will still shy away from being petted by most strangers, she will eagerly sit and take treats from them.  Most of the people we meet will never know her past…they simply see her as a beautiful happy dog passing by them on the trail.
