Ohio Governor John Kasich (R) signed on the dotted line, making Ohio House Bill 14an official law. HB 14 is a piece of legislation that will create a new and more refined system for defining a dog as potentially dangerous, removing the American Pit Bull Terrier and other “Bully breeds” from the list of automatically “vicious” dogs.

By: BSL News: What You Can Do to Fight Bully Breedism

Miami-Dade County is the only county in the entire state permitted to engage in canine profiling. Florida state legislators Representative Carlos Trujillo and Senator Jim Norman are leading an effort, with the help of Best Friends Animal Society, to right this injustice and to repeal the portion of the Florida statute that allows Miami-Dade to kill dogs simply because of their appearance.

No other county in Florida is allowed such unmitigated power over people’s pets. It is time that Miamians again enjoy the same right that citizens in Florida’s 66 other counties have.

Despite being over 20 years old, Miami’s canine profiling still causes the needless, senseless and unjustified confiscation and killing of hundreds of innocent dogs every year, proving that breed discrimination does not make communities safer, and is impossible to enforce. It’s also a waste of tax dollars. Nowhere else in Florida can certain breeds of dogs be summarily killed simply because of their appearance.

It is time to put an end, once and for all, to canine discrimination in Florida and make the Sunshine State a model of humane public policy.

Denver

We opened Mariah’s Promise as a refuge to take these family pets. Puppies and dogs were abandoned in parks and on the streets of Denver. There were posters placed around Denver to contact Mariah’s Promise. One thing that came to our attention was that people would have friends call because they thought we were a sting operation to locate pit bull dogs in Denver and turn them in. How sad!

Neighbors turned neighbors in, and friends turned against friends. People watched as dogs were carried to animal control trucks. Children cried and screamed as their dogs were being carried off. It was frightening.

When people tried to fight back, law enforcement was called in or had accompanied animal control. If people refused to surrender their dog, animal control would step aside, and law enforcement would step up to offer to arrest them, take them downtown and charge them with harboring a pit bull – a charge that imposed a $999 citation. And animal control would get the dog anyway. Sigh…

As an example of the media slant, in June 2005, CNN sent a film crew out. They spent seven hours filming. The film crew was excited and thrilled to watch the dogs run and play in the yard or laze in the house. They went into each kennel and filmed the dogs. The result: In a five-minute segment, they used about 45 seconds of the film of dogs at Mariah’s Promise playing. In the rest they preferred to use pictures of dogs fighting, the scarred faces of children, dogs terrified in shelters, etc.

What Every Dog Deserves……From A Dog’s View

Here in this house… I will never know the loneliness I hear in the barks of the other dogs ‘out there’. I can sleep soundly, assured that when I wake my world will not have changed. I will never know hunger, or the fear of not knowing if I’ll eat. I will not shiver in the cold, or grow weary from the heat. I will feel the sun’s heat, and the rain’s coolness, and be allowed to smell all that can reach my nose. My fur will shine, and never be dirty or matted.

Here in this house… There will be an effort to communicate with me on my level. I will be talked to and, even if I don’t understand, I can enjoy the warmth of the words. I will be given a name so that I may know who I am among many. My name will be used in joy, and I will love the sound of it!

Here in this house… I will never be a substitute for anything I am not. I will never be used to improve peoples’ images of themselves. I will be loved because I am who I am, not someone’s idea of who I should be. I will never suffer for someone’s anger, impatience, or stupidity. I will be taught all the things I need to know to be loved by all. If I do not learn my lessons well, they will look to my teacher for blame.

Here in this house… I can trust arms that hold, hands that touch…knowing that, no matter what they do, they do it for the good of me. If I am ill, I will be doctored. If scared, I will be calmed. If sad, I will be cheered. No matter what I look like, I will be considered beautiful and known to be of value.

I will never be cast out because I am too old, too ill, too unruly, or not cute enough. My life is a responsibility, and not an afterthought. I will learn that humans can almost, sometimes, be as kind and as fair as dogs.

Here in this house… I will belong. I will be home.

Pit bull is not a breed of dog, there are numerous breeds all lumped together and called pit bull…American Pit Bull Terriers, Miniature Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American Bull Dogs, Bull Terriers or mixed breeds that have the appearance or characteristics of one of these breeds…

Many people have never met a pit bull and could not pick one out of a lineup such as this…can you?

Lu & Wally’s Sweet Potato & Flax Wheat-Free

The ingredients:

1 medium sweet potato (1/2 cup)

1 egg

1/2 cup flaxseed meal

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 cup rice flour

The directions:

1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.

2. Microwave sweet potato until soft and mashable.   (About 5 minutes, but maybe more, depending on the size of your potato.)

3. Cut sweet potato in half and scoop 1/2 cup of potato.

4. In a medium bowl, combine sweet potato, egg, flax meal and cinnamon.

5. Stir until well blended and then add the rice flour.

6. Stir until a soft dough forms.

7. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface.   With your hands, or a rolling pin, press the dough into a rectangle that is 1/4″ thick.

8. With a pizza cutter or a knife, cut the dough into 1/2″  x 1/2″  squares.  We were able to get 96 squares out of this batch.

9. Transfer the squares to a baking sheet.

10. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes.

Makes approximately 8 dozen 1/2″ dog treats.

carrot bacon muffins for dogs 

ingredients:

3 Cups of Unbleached flour

1 Tbs Baking powder

1/2 Cup of Butter

6 Eggs

1/2 Cup of olive Oil

2 Jars of chicken baby food

2 Cups Shredded or chopped carrots

3 Strips of cooked bacon or ham

Directions:

Combine butter, eggs, oil, baby food and

carrots in a large bowl. Mix well. Slowly add the

flour and baking powder. Pour batter into a well

greased muffin pan. Cut up a few cooked bacon

slices and place on top of the muffins. I used

two to three pieces of bacon on each muffin.

Bake at 350 degrees for sixty minutes. I

suggest checking the muffins at the fifty minute

mark as all ovens are different! After two or

three days store in an airtight container.

Are Mutts Smarter Than Purebred Dogs?
How to Choose Your New Best Friend from an Animal Shelter

Among the biggest victims of the economic recession are the once beloved family pets surrendered to shelters as their owners deal with extended joblessness. The U.S. Humane Society estimates 6 to 8 million dogs and cats enter shelters each year – and 3 to 4 million are euthanized.

“We don’t have firm numbers but we know anecdotally that the communities that have been hardest hit by the economic downturn are seeing that reflected in their shelter intake numbers,” says Inga Fricke, director of sheltering issues for the U.S. Humane Society.

“And, unfortunately, while the majority of the public is in favor of adopting pets from shelters, very few – usually about 20 percent – actually do. That has recently gone up slightly to the mid-20s.”

Fricke and retired police officer Irvin Cannon, a confirmed dog lover whose new book, For the Love of Dog Tales (www.FortheLoveofDogTales.com), gives voice to man’s best friend, hope people getting back on their feet will consider adopting a shelter dog.

Cannon was a poor kid growing up in Detroit when his family took in a stray dog. It surprised young Irvin that his father would be willing to share the family’s meager groceries with a dog, but he soon discovered the return on their investment was enormous.

“You won’t find a better companion, whether you bring home a mystery mixed-breed or a purebred Labrador,” he says. “Everyone thinks mutts are smarter and generally healthier, but really, it all depends on their mix of breeds and which breed strain is dominant.”

Border collies and Rottweilers are two of the smartest breeds, Cannon says. But they tend to have other traits, too, which are just as important to consider when choosing what dog best suits your lifestyle. Remember – dogs are as individual as people. A dog’s breed, or breed mix, is no guarantee that it will have certain traits.

That said, border collies tend to need lots of room to run and lots of attention – they’re high-maintenance, Cannon says. If you can’t spend a lot of active time with them, they’ll be unhappy and you’ll have problems.

Rottweilers are fast learners and lovable family animals, but they also tend to have bold personalities associated with pack leaders. If you are not an experienced dog owner, or if you have young or shy children, you might want to consider a different breed.

Dominant dogs that are allowed to bully their family members, dogs that are kept on a chain, dogs that are not neutered, and dogs that are allowed to run loose can become problem dogs that may bite.

Here are some other tidbits regarding breeds:

• Among other dog breeds known for intelligence: Shetland sheepdogs, golden retrievers, Labrador retrievers, poodles, Australian cattle dogs, Papillons and Doberman pinschers.

• Bulldogs, beagles and Basset hounds all start with ‘B’ but get much lower grades for smarts.

• Some breeds have tendencies toward problems such as deafness, blindness or hip dysplasia, remember, these are genetic issues that are inherited. So if you’re mixed-breed includes some German shepherd, it may also have hip dysplasia (a problem with the joint’s bone structure).

• If you’re in the market for a purebred dog, you have a 25 percent chance of finding one – although maybe not the breed you want – at a shelter. If your heart is set on a specific breed, check your area for a rescue group specializing in that breed.

Right now, the entire Pekingese breed is in crisis. It is so plagued by health issues and inbreeding that many people say the breed may not even survive. The biggest issue is Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome – the upper airway problem that plagues short-nosed, flat-faced dog breeds…

…And speaking about King Charles spaniels, who are also bred with skulls that are too small for their brains, veterinary neurologist Clare Rusbridge said:

“The cavalier’s brain is like a size ten foot that has been shoved into a size six shoe; it doesn’t fit. It is described in humans as one of the most painful conditions you can have, a piston-type headache. Even a light touch – a collar, for example – can induce discomfort.

“If you took a stick and beat a dog to create that pain, you’d be prosecuted. But there’s nothing to stop you breeding a dog with it.”

Is this truly our idea of the perfect dog – the best in show? Is this how we want to judge and recognize the best characteristics for our best friends?

Isn’t it time for people who love pets and care about animals to rise up and bring this sham to an end?

The only thing that’s pure in the “purebred” industry is the lifetime of pure suffering that’s being inflicted on dogs by this morally bankrupt industry.

Adopt a shelter pet… just like your favorite celebrities…

update on cici’s leg/home wanted

When Cici can rest, she is doing better, not limping. Unfortunately, am living with a psycho. Had to call an attorney yesterday.

If someone knows a SAFE, QUIET, CLEAN, PRIVATE place for us to live for $250 a month with a yard, Internet, washer/dryer and SANE people (am a senior on a fixed income), please let us know asap.

In April 2011, owner/roommate let my dog outside without my knowledge. She ran away and was gone all night. She got spooked by a vehicle going over her. He told me that she was dead and laughed about it. I looked for her all night and Cici was found to be at the SPCA in the morning. I had to pay $200 to get her back. He paid nothing.

About a month ago, owner roommate took Cici, my dog, out for a long walk. When they got back, the next day, I saw that she was limping but it went away by the next day. A week or so later, he took her for another walk, she came back limping again. This time, the limping continued for a couple of weeks. Finally, I took her to see an orthopedic specialist vet since I was concerned about her leg. Four years ago, she had had surgeries on it from an accident. The vet took x-rays and examined her and determined that her previous injuries were all healed but that she had torn a ligament in her knee requiring surgery. He gave me info to google to do research and said that we could wait a month or two for the surgery. And when I got back home, I did the research and found out that there was something called Conservative Management, a protocol of confinement and restriction as well as supplements that when followed could eliminate the surgery.

I spoke to the vet about it as well as another vet and people who had gone through this with their dogs and was told to go ahead and do the Conservative Management protocol. This confinement means that she is not allowed to run, jump or play or even walk except to go potty a few times a day. I told owner/roommate and my other roommate about this. I kept my dog tethered for about a week but it was not really working so I got a crate to put her in.

I was surprised that she took so easily to the crate and finally she was resting the way she was supposed to do. And she stopped limping for a couple of days. Then owner/roommate decided to open up her crate whenever he felt like it, let her out, let her jump on furniture, and even took her for a walk for 30 minutes. She started limping again. I repeatedly told him NOT to do all of this to no avail. I explained over and over and over to him that the protocol was important and could save her from having surgery. And that him doing this was HURTING my dog and this was not only unacceptable but sabotaging her progress.

He continued his assault upon my dog so I bought a lock to put on the crate so that he could not open it. At l:30 am Monday night, Feb. 13, owner/roommate somehow managed to get the crate open without the lock and got Cici out, let her run around and jump onto furniture laughing and taunting me. I took the dog away from him and brought her into my room and kept her locked up with me all day Valentine’s Day. He usually is not home but he stayed the entire day. Several times I had to go to the bathroom, he opened my door to let her out. And he kept trying to play with her and let her run around. I did not sleep well as it was and my stress level is through the roof. I have arthritis and am hurting all over. And Cici is limping again.

At midnight, I woke up to hear him tell my other roommate that Cici was dead. That she had been killed. My other roommate was very upset.  I came out and told him that jack-a– is a liar and was just telling him that as a “joke.”  Roommate got mad and told jacka– it was NOT funny. I told him I contacted a lawyer. He said he was on my side and witness to the abuse, not only harming my dog but also me.

Here is what I would say in a letter to jacka–…

Given that I have repeatedly asked you in good faith and you have continually refused to comply with the advice / prescription of the vets to keep my dog Cici confined/restricted for about six weeks to avoid surgery and you have refused my requests that YOU LEAVE MY DOG ALONE, stop teasing her, not let her out or encourage her to jump up on furniture, and have continued to harass me and the dog and by thereby doing so are causing her harm … I am writing to let you know that you cannot continue to sabotage my efforts to restrict / confine my dog in any way including the following

You MUST NOT:

open the door to my room when I am away and let the door run around the house

let the dog run around in the yard, outside, and jump on furniture

let the dog out of the crate or out of the house

walk the dog or run the dog

pick the dog up

tease the dog, call the dog or rouse the dog

encourage the dog to kick her legs  in any way

harm/hurt the dog in any way

Doing the above is in violation to the vet’s instructions and my instructions and YOU WILL BE LIABLE for the cost of any and ALL surgeries, vet appointments/visits and treatments for causing further harm to my dog.

In addition, since all of the stress this has been causing ME has been worsening MY condition, if I should have a heart attack, stroke or need other medical treatment, you are also liable.

What kind of a sick, twisted, sadistic person does this???? I rescued Cici from a domestic violence situation originally because I was afraid that she would be killed. And now here we are… I don’t think he would actually kill her but who knows.
