Easter sweet surprise giveaway

In her Easter bonnet, no, Cici will not appear in a hat…

and no we are NOT giving away Easter bunnies… hop hop hop…

Every once in awhile us pet parents have to indulge in a sweet delight just for ourselves, and usually mine is chocolate, something I can eat and Cici cannot… but recently I sampled these amazing sweet treats so what we ARE giving away is a box of …

Zeke’s Butterscotch

This is the best butterscotch I’ve ever eaten. Tastes fresh, rich and is simply addicting. NOT for dogs.  Humans only. Melts in your mouth delicious.

To be eligible for the box of homemade vintage butterscotch, participants must “Like” the Zeke’s Facebook fan page and Tweet the following to Zeke’s Twitter page: “What’s your best memory with butterscotch?” Leave a comment here and/or like the Have Dog Blog will Travel Facebook page, too to keep us in the loop.

Contest ends April 18 at midnight PST. You’ve got just Eight more days to enter and win.  (Yes, we just extended the date) … And if you make us laugh, with a photo of your pet in rabbit ears, (optional) you may just get an extra special pet treat, too.

So hop hop hop over and you just may win this yummy sweet surprise…

For me, my memories of butterscotch are of the hard candy kind. My dad had a store in Manhattan near to Chinatown. And on special occasions, we would visit the Lower East Side for candy. There were all kinds of goodies… shoe leather (apricot delight), licorice ropes in various flavors, fruity filled hard candies and butterscotch. The candy store near our home where I usually bought my candy held treasures such as MaryJane’s, Clark bars or anything sweet and salty combined with butter, chocolate and/or peanut butter, made me happy. But the more exotic types of candy obtained in NYC were a rare treat for us kid candy connoisseurs.

My grandmother‘s pocketbook was also a great resource for candy. It was usually filled with delights such as peppermint Chiclets gum and butterscotch candies, too. I loved to dig through her purse (how rude, huh) and find something sweet and delicious. It was one of our rituals. Whatever I found, I could eat. Hey, I was 10 and younger. I lived for stuff like that.

About Zeke’s

The Zeke butterscotch candy gets its unique flavor from the ingredients from a recipe from Zeke’s mother, Old Wuss as she was called, who found it in a cookbook that was published in Chicago around 1860, way before imitation flavors were invented.   REAL butterscotch is made with real ingredients.  The main ingredients are Hawaiian pure cane sugar, butter, Grade AA Creamery Butter and lots of it and unsulphered molasses which gives Zeke’s Butterscotch its deep, rich flavor.  The apple cider vinegar in the candy creates a chemical reaction that softens the butterscotch when it is warmed – as in your mouth, and that’s when you’ll start drooling.  It has a very juicy, buttery flavor.  Two more minor but very important ingredients are water (pure and natural) and salt.

Zeke’s Candy Company, formerly Cotton’s Candy Kitchen Co., is owned and operated by Sheila and Jeff Cotton in Cedarville, Ca. and has been in operation since 1988. The two married candy connoisseurs love making vintage candy butterscotch.

positive pit bull ads

the difference in pet advertising and pet policies is heating up on the pit bull front.  Some companies like 3M/Scotch are PIT BULL PROUD … and deserve KUDOS for displaying a cute pit bull dog in their display ads…

GOOD STUFF:  How about we thank a major corporation for throwing some much-needed pro-pittie advertising out there? Maybe call this the
“THANK YOU SCOTCH IT’S A PIT BULL!” campaign? :) ~John

Maybe say something on the Scotch Facebook Page:

https://www.facebook.com/scotch?sk=wall

and also send it direct to the company via the Scotch lint roller:

Please use http://www.pruvenpet.com or http://www.scotchlint.com to leave comments

Dog Time has created Mad Canines, if the characters on the Mad Men TV Show were dogs… one of the characters is portrayed as a pit bull/Viszla mix… hmmmm… what do you think?

http://dogtime.com/mad-men-dot-dot-dot-if-the-characters-were-dogs.html+

seriously?  and then there is a chain pet store that sells toxic pet treats from China and have banned bully breeds from their doggie daycare…

sheesh… name change… from Pet Smart to Pet Stupid…

Anna MacNeil’s study shows pit bulls’ natural habitat is the bed and breed-specific behavior is cuddling.

Cool cats

Now that Pit Boss and Pit Bulls and Parolees are on hiatus, Animal Planet has some new shows featuring kitty cats that I LOVE (besides Too Cute which follows puppies and kittens progress)…Must Love Cats and the show with Jackson (Cats from Hell) I LOVE LOVE LOVE those two shows.

Forgive me Cici for I LOVE cats and people who love cats.  When Cici hears kitties on TV (and dogs too) she looks up at the TV with wonder. Like, where are the cats?

I just found out about some really cool cats in a cat palace…

tell Gov. Brown NO to Hayden repeal

Legislators to determine the fate of California’s pets on April 11. Please call today!

Pets in California animal shelters are dangerously close to being cast back into the dark ages. Right now, the Hayden Bill (SB 1785), a groundbreaking law passed in 1998 to protect shelter animals and give them more chances to find homes, is in danger of being partially repealed by Governor Jerry Brown.

The Assembly Budget Subcommittee has already rejected Governor Brown’s proposed repeal of the Hayden Bill.  Now, the fate of thousands of animals across the state is in the hands of the Senate Budget Subcommittee, who will hold their own hearing on Wednesday, April 11. You can help by contacting the committee members today (calls are most effective), and asking them not to repeal any parts of the Hayden Bill.

Senator Joe Simitian, Chair: (916) 651-4011
Senator Jean Fuller: (916) 651-4018
Senator Alan Lowenthal: (916) 651-4027

Top 10 Reasons to Feed Your Dog Fresh Whole Food

Below are the Top Ten Reasons to Make the Switch for Your Pet: (from Dr. Harvey)…

http://www.drharveys.com/blog/post/35-top-ten-reasons-to-feed-homemade-food-to-your-pets

1. Ability to control the quality of the ingredients
2. Increase longevity
3. Ability to avoid synthetic ingredients
4. Ability to avoid toxicity caused by preservatives
5. Avoid dyes and coloring agents
6. Maintain healthy weight-increase energy
7. Improved skin and coat
8. Avoid allergies
9.Improve dental health
10. Avoid common degenerative diseases (Arthritis, Kidney Disease, Cancer)

All of these benefits can be achieved with a minimum of effort and the results are so rewarding.

You CAN do this for your dog!

Dr. Harvey and I just had a conversation about this topic. I had told him that Cici was not wanting to eat her soup (raw dehydrated food) and I asked for his advice. He said over and over that it is best to make your own food, that way you know what your pet is eating.

His words:

Fresh is Best and Here’s why…

We think fresh is best. Would you want to eat boxed cereal or canned food as your daily diet? No, of course you wouldn’t. And we don’t think your companion wants to either. We know that fresh is best and our pre-mixes make fresh possible. Even with a busy schedule it is possible to make a fresh meal for your companion every day. You can also make enough for a few days and keep it in the refrigerator. Our foods will stay fresh for 2-3 days in the refrigerator and can be frozen for traveling or for a sitter.

Treats should be chemical-free and safe too. So many are filled with preservatives and tainted meat products. Check here for preservative-free, dye-free and healthy treats!

Power Patties, yum yum yum, Cici’s favorite treats !!!

Does your dog need a little get up and go, vitality, zip, extra wag, and/or a healthy shiny coat? do you give them vitamins and minerals?  Like me, you probably do not want to give them pills… Cici is taking a few supplements right now for her leg, to help it heal… I give them to her wrapped in hot dogs or deli cold cuts or cheese…she loves that…

Super-Doggies

March 23, is National Puppy Day, and there is a new cast of animated characters helping to promote the adoption of dogs all over the world – the Super-Doggies.

The Super-Doggies are a trio of animated singing dogs featured in a music video encouraging people to visit dog shelters with hopes of giving abandoned puppies a caring home. The Super-Doggies feature Barack Obama’s dog, Bo and Vladmir Putin’s dog, Buffy.  In fact, in this video both world leaders join their dogs for a global dance party.  Lending a hand in the creation of this video is none other than Eugeniy (Eugene) Kuritsyn, the 2012 Oscar award-winning animator of Rango.

Eugeniy has teamed up with Grammy Award winning producer Neal Pogue who works with musicians like Nicky Minaj, Lil Wayne, Outkast and Pink.  The effort is also getting guidance from marketing veteran Bruce Kirkland who directed The Beatles Anthology project, the Beastie Boys, the Spice Girls, Radiohead, and Everclear.
