Random acts of baked goods

Due to the inspiration of the Nine Nanas, who for 30 years have been making delicious lemon/lime pound cakes and giving them out to strangers in secret, anonymously, I thought why not do cupcakes and/or pupcakes?  (since they might be easier for me to make and bake) as a way to paw it forward… raise money for animal rescue/shelters… a creative way to promote your bakery or business. Lots of fundraising and giving happiness ideas.

pay it forward with pound cakes

Feel free to perform random acts of baked goods.  If you are a bakery, who would like to donate baked goods, let us know. And if you are an animal rescue or shelter and want us to help you raise funds, let us know. And if you just want to utilize this idea, please let us know when you do !

Here are some cupcakes (for humans) recipes as well as pupcakes (for dogs) recipes for you to consider pawing forward.

for pupcakes

Ingredients:

Muffins:

• 2 cups shredded carrots

• 3 eggs

• 1/2 cup applesauce, unsweetened

• 2 tsp. cinnamon

• 1/2 cup rolled oats

• 3 cups whole wheat flour

Frosting:

• 8 oz. low fat cream cheese, softened

• 1/4 cup applesauce, unsweetened

Instructions:

Muffins:

1. Preheat oven to 350° F

2. Lightly spray cups of muffin tin.

3. In a large bowl stir together the carrots, eggs and applesauce. Set aside.

4. In another medium bowl whisk together the cinnamon, oats and flour.

5. Slowly mix in the dry ingredients. Stir until well blended.

6. Spoon mixture into muffin tin. The dough will be thick, so you may wet your fingers to press the dough into place.

7. The dog cupcake will not rise very much, so do not worry about over filling the muffin tin.

8. Bake for 25 minutes.

9. Cool completely on a wire rack before frosting or serving.

Frosting:

1. Blend both ingredients with a hand mixer until well blended.

2. Spoon into a pastry bag for easy decorating.

Storing: These dog cupcakes will keep fresh in your refrigerator for 2 weeks. You can freeze them for up to 2 months. If you are going to freeze them, do not decorate with the frosting until they have thawed. For more information on how to store homemade dog treats please review our tips.

For cupcakes decorated as dogs/cats

To make the base you will need:

1/2 cup unsalted butter

2/3 cup caster sugar

2 large eggs

1 tsp vanilla essence

1 cup SR flour

100mL milk

1. Pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees C. Line a 12 cupcake tin with paper cases.

2. Cream the butter and sugar. Add the eggs one at a time.

3. Beat in a little of the flour and the all of the vanilla essence. Then beat in the rest of the flour.

4. Add the milk and mix well.

5. Fill each cupcake case about 3/4 full. Bake for about 15 minutes, or until cooked in the centre.

6. Put on a rack to cool after 5 minutes.

To make the decorations, you will need:

250g cream cheese

1 cup icing sugar

1 tsp vanilla essence

large chocolate buttons

yellow, orange, brown and green chocolate M&Ms

biscotti

Fru-chocs

Black icing pen

spaghetti or noodle strands, cut into 4cm lengths

1. Beat the cream cheese, icing sugar and vanilla essence with electric beaters until smooth.

2. When cupcakes are completely cool, spread a generous layer of icing on each cupcake.

3. To make a dog cupcake, place a chocolate button in the eye position. Affix a yellow or orange M&M on top of the chocolate button for the pupil. Put a small dot of black icing in the centre of the M&M to make the pupil. Add a matching M&M and dot of black icing for the other eye. Put a Fru-choc in the nose position. Draw in the mouth with the black icing pen. Finally, affix two biscotti for the ears, using a dab of icing mixture to hold each ear in place,

4. To make a cat cupcake, place two orange or green M&Ms in the eye position. Pen in a vertical line of black icing on each M&M to create the cat’s pupil. Cut two large chocolate buttons so as to make two triangles. Position the triangles in the ear position. Next, put a brown M&M in the centre of the cupcake for the nose. Pen in the mouth using the black icing pen. Finally, add some spaghetti or noodle lengths for whiskers.

July 4th in southern California

Families who seek an uncrowded beach vacation destination catch a wave, attend surf camp, bike for miles, picnic, and more !

Near to the Los Angeles airport, LAX, and close to beach cities such as  Redondo, Manhattan, Huntington and Newport Beach, the city of Torrance has some interesting places to visit for dog owners and their pooches.

There is a little-known Southern California beach that offers a quiet, easy-going ambiance at Torrance Beach.  Simply take the I-110 to Torrance Boulevard west which ends at the ocean, or exit from the I-405 at Hawthorne Boulevard south and then go west on Torrance Boulevard.

This stunning, soft sand, 1.5-mile beach is framed by the hills of Palos Verdes just south of Redondo Beach.  It’s a unique coastal setting with a small town charm and a variety of hotels just two miles east.  Back in the 1950s there was a well-known beach club in Torrance which attracted many Hollywood celebrities looking to get away from it all.  Today, Torrance is the ideal family destination with its low-key, casual ambiance — and close proximity to top sights and attractions for families who also want to do Disneyland and Universal Studios.

Torrance Beach offers a significant amount of parking, plenty of restrooms, lifeguards are on duty all summer long, and a 22-mile paved and lit beach path which heads up to Santa Monica that is perfect for walking or cycling. Vacationers can also channel their inner Californian and learn to surf with a half or full-day “Perfect Day Surf Camp” at cpsurfshop.com.  Locals also recommend the “killer” breakfast burrito or milkshakes at Surfside Grill which is right on the beach (a rarity in Southern California) and offers an unmatched view.

The very end of Rat Beach is off Paseo de la Playa, in Torrance.  Torrance touches the ocean at that point, between South Redondo Beach & Malaga Cove in Palos Verdes Estates.  Rat Beach is not crowded ever, presumably because it’s kinda hidden, and also because you have to walk in, you can’t drive all the way to the end.  There’s a path at the very end of the cove that leads up to Malaga Cove School, on whose grounds the 4th of July picnic is held every year.

Hotel accommodations are easy to come by — and often much less expensive than elsewhere in Southern California. Travelers can find hotels from budget to deluxe represented by all of the major brands  including  pet-friendly accommodations, complimentary breakfast and Internet access, and more.  Rates range from from $79 to $249 based upon availability.

For additional information or to book a room, travelers can visit www.discovertorrance.com,  send an e-mail to info@discovertorrance.com.  The Discover Torrance office is located at 3400 Torrance Boulevard, Suite 100, Torrance, CA  90503.

El Segundo Dog Park. About 60×300 foot lots of trees south side of LAX. Between Imperial Avenue and Imperial Highway at Sheldon Street. From the east take 105 Freeway, go west to the end onto Imperial Highway. go to the first light and turn left then around 2 short bends until going west again along Imperial Avenue, which parallels Imperial Highway a few blocks. You will be driving parallel to it on the right side. Sounds complicated but not once you are there.

Turn right at Winding Way East, and park in the signed parking lot (27200 Winding Way). Here’s a map of Escondido Canyon Park. Follow the paved road on foot for approximately 1 mile to the Escondido Canyon trailhead on your left, and take it all the way to the waterfall. The trail is open sunrise to sunset; parking is limited, so get there early. Dog-friendly!

Dogs race

The annual Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals takes place at the Los Alamitos Race Course in July. The dog event is a 50-yard dash for Dachshunds with winning speeds around 6-7 seconds. Only 98 dogs are selected to compete in a total of 12 trials with winner, or wiener, of each trial advancing to the Wienerschnitzel Wiener National at Los Alamitos Final. There’s no fee to enter

Fireworks and boat parades are fun festivities that take place every July 4th in nearby Newport Beach.  Depending how well your dogs do with noises and crowds, you may or may not want to watch. But you might be able to find a spot not too close for the dogs but close enough to see what is going on for the humans.

NEWPORT HARBOR 4TH OF JULY BOAT PARADE

Treats for all seasons

Cici loves her treats/cookies. And the Lincoln Bark Butterpup doggie snacks people asked her to do a taste test of their Chia treats. She thought they were yummy (considering that she prefers treats with meat in them, she loves to scarf these up)…

And I liked the idea of giving her treats with wholesome and not your usual ingredients.

I’d heard about the goodness of eating chia seeds for humans. And Cici is ahead of me now eating them. Chia has been used for centuries as an all-natural dietary supplement. Harvested from the Salvia Hispanica plant, chia seeds were used by the Aztecs to treat a variety of ailments. Chia is high in omega 3 fatty acids and has natural antibiotic properties. The chia seed is an excellent source of fiber, packed with antioxidants, full of protein, loaded with vitamins and minerals, and the richest known plant source of omega-3.  Nutty-tasting whole-grain chia seeds are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, and they have among the highest antioxidant activity of any whole food – even more than fresh blueberries. And they do good stuff for the body, like keeping blood pressure and blood sugar under control.

These treats are peanut butter based, which Cici also loves. And they are a bit hard and crunchy. She likes to munch on them !  They come in different flavors: Chicken liver, Salmon, Oatmeal and Pumpkin. Cici tasted the Oatmeal ones.

Ingredients: (we LOVE ingredients we can say/name, no chemicals)

Rice flour, rolled oats, potato flour, peanut butter, honey, chia seeds, and canola oil.

They are $9.99 for an 8 oz bag.

The company offers a few other products.

Treat Smart- a soft nutraceutical treat that is great for the skin and coat, and also powered by Chia seeds.

Doggie and Kitty Sprinkles -a protein supplement and flavor enhancer that is sprinkled on food to entice finicky eaters to enjoy every bite!

 The Butterpup story

The story of Sweet Little Butterpup™ snacks began when our two-year-old pup Sophie was diagnosed with Addison’s disease. To boost her food intake, we tried every dog treat available. Nothing worked. Determined to help Sophie, we did extensive research on canine nutrition. Then we started baking our own treats. Healthy and delicious, they were made with 100% natural, human grade ingredients like yummy peanut butter, sweet pumpkin and crunchy oatmeal. To our joy, Sophie couldn’t get enough! Nor could all the dogs in the neighborhood.

Today, Sweet Little Butterpup™ treats contain only pure, honest ingredients. Because we care, our snacks are made by hand and baked in small batches for freshness. Order these irresistible treats today…then send us a photo showing how high your pup jumps.

These products contain no wheat, soy, corn, preservatives, additives, artificial colors or flavors. And are backed by  100% money-back guarantee.

June paw pals

Hooray for Paw Pals…like pen pals for dogs…

a fun way to meet other dog owners and for your dogs, it’s a real win win situation… the way that it works is that Doggy Dessert Chef will send you the name of your pawpal for the month, you email them and ask what they like and send them a package of goodies on the 10th of the month. Another person sends you a goodie package. And the paw pals change every month. You send and receive goodie packages filled with gifts of toys, treats, a card and something for you. Then on the 25th of the month, you write about it on your blog, if you have one, like this. Pretty nifty, huh.

http://doggydessertchef.com/pawpals/

This month we received a yummy bone and Dogswell duck treats for Cici and habanero chocolate for me… hot stuff !!!  (I was asked for something specific to Arizona and I said chocolate covered cactus or something chocolate and hot)… I am going to make some kind of mole’ sauce out of this, but I tasted it, spread it on a roll and it is yummylicious. Not too hot (spicy) but with just enough kick. I had heard about Mexican chocolate dishes using mole’ sauce which I have never had but ole’ now I will have to experiment with mole’.  Ole’!

Now, do you think Cici enjoyed her bone?  Fiesta, baby !

Onto the Dogswell duck jerky…(made from cage free quack quacks)…

Thanks Paw pals !!!

A horse is a horse

Of course, of course, have you ever talked to a talking horse like Mr Ed?

well, maybe not…

but this High Horse story is sure telling a story about Ann Romney and her horse…and the Romney’s relationship to animals…

I do not write a lot of political posts on my dog blog except when it has to do with animals being abused (Patrick, Lennox, the V dogs etc), controversial matters related to animals, pit bulls usually, and this stuff about the Romneys and their treatment of animals keeps getting worser and worser… so have to say a few words about it…

http://articles.latimes.com/2012/may/22/nation/la-na-ann-romney-dressage-20120522/2

as if the $77,000 tax write off as a business expense on Mitt Romney’s income tax statement was not enough… (as Lawrence O’Donnell pointed out) since Ann Romney’s health care has been used as the reason for the horse, to help her overcome MS.  Now I have read the Tao of Equus and heard about horse therapy helping people who have been abused and with serious illnesses but I’ve not heard about doing dressage with a horse to overcome MS.

http://eponaquest.com/about/books/#the-tao-of-equus

But I digress from the issue here…which is that Ann Romney was SUED and settled out of court because her horse was sold and found to be full of drugs and unable to do dressage.

http://www.buzzfeed.com/rosiegray/ann-romneys-high-horse

so if one puts that together with the dog Seamus strapped to the roof of the car for 12 hours, plus Mitt Romney’s history of abusing gay kids, draft dodging (he was a Mormon missionary in France during Vietnam), downright lies (that Rachel Maddow and others have outlined) and avoiding being a leader and taking a stand on any issue, never mind his lack of vision for moving the economy and securing jobs for Americans (and his background as Governor in Massachusetts and Bain Capital do not bode well), plus his anti-women, anti-Latino immigration and other stances, not to mention how OUT OF TOUCH he is to regular people, has NO CLUE how to relate to middle class and/or poor folks, sheesh…

http://samuel-warde.com/2012/06/mitt-romneys-top-10-lies-this-week/

http://maddowblog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/06/22/12359704-chronicling-mitts-mendacity-vol-xxiii

‎”During the nearly 15 years that Romney was actively involved in running Bain, a private equity firm that he founded, it owned companies that were pioneers in the practice of shipping work from the United States to overseas call centers and factories making computer components, according to filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.”

http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/romneys-bain-capital-invested-in-companies-that-moved-jobs-overseas/2012/06/21/gJQAsD9ptV_story.html

plus how as Governor, Romney taxed blind and mentally disabled folks for being blind and disabled…

people who abuse animals often abuse people, too…

and raising taxes on the poor and middle class and NOT the rich,  I don’t think having an abuser in the White House is right for America…

Dogs beat the heat…

Summertime is fun time for both dogs and humans.  But when the temps climb, how can you cool off your hot dogs?

Here’s how some dogs are getting a jump on summer heat and cooling off…

In Rome, dogs eat gelato

http://www.aol.com/video/when-in-rome-dogs-get-gelato-too/517399551/?icid=maing-grid7|main5|video-module|sec3_lnk3|171270

Make your own frozen treats for your dogs

Frosty Paws:

32 oz yogurt
2 mashed banana’s
2 T honey optional
1/4 C Peanut Butter

Freeze it in a ice cube tray and serve to your pup on a hot day. Be careful of any allergies your dog might have.

http://blog.oregonlive.com/dogs/2008/05/cool_off_those_hot_dogs.html

Pool or Beach pawty

a trip to the beach or pool are definitely cool… but make sure there is some shade or bring some shade with you (a canopy or umbrella) if the temperatures get too high

http://binghamton.ynn.com/content/top_stories/480255/hot-dogs-cool-off-in-corning/

Get out the hose or a kiddie pool for your dog to jump in and refresh themselves

In places like Las Vegas or Arizona, where the temps climb to over 100 degrees, walk your pooches early in the day and after dark

Grass is the word… grass is cooler and better for poochie paws than concrete… let them keep roll

Make sure your dog has plenty of fresh water to drink

Get a cool collar like the Too Cool collar

http://www.calmingcollars.com/digishop/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=8

Let your pooch dig him/herself a hole in the ground in the yard to sit in … the earth cools them off… Cici loves her places in the shade

Set a fan on the floor just for Fido

SIGNS of Dog Dehydration
  • Heavy panting
  • Labored breathing
  • Vomiting
  • Unusual behavior
  • Droopy Lips
  • Lack of Energy
  • Won’t eat or drink

Step 1: To cool down a hot dog know that if your dog has any of the symptoms above, ie, is panting heavily, has a swollen tongue or is lethargic it is probably in distress.

Step 2: Get the dog into the shade as soon as possible to provide immediate relief.

Step 3: Pour cool water onto your dog very slowly, and repeat this every 10 minutes of so until the dog begins to return to normal behavior.

Dogs cool from the bottom up.

Make sure to spray the paws and stomach, not just the top of the dog, when spraying it with water. A wet towel does more good on the bottom of your dog than when laid on the top of its coat.

http://www.cesarsway.com/tips/seasonal/top-summer-tips

Never leave your dog alone in a parked car.

The car retains more heat than an open area, even if it is in the shade. Plus, a dog may get overexcited in the car due to passersbys or panic from claustrophobia, making dehydration more likely. On longer trips, make sure you have water for the dog and keep the AC running.

Step 4: Place the dog in a car that has air conditioning and stay with the dog. If air conditioning is not available fan the dog with a towel or newspaper or feed them ice cubes/chips.

Step 5: If you dog does not respond to these measures in 20 minutes or so, take them to the vet  immediately.

Got Dog Allergies?

Does your dog have allergies?  There is nothing worse for a pet parent, owner, guardian, to see their pet suffer, itch, scratch and be downright miserable. When they are miserable, so are we. And too often, it takes a lot of time, energy and money to figure out what is going on, what is wrong and what we can do about it.  I spent time at two different vets, changed Cici’s food and diet numerous times, and still, she itched and licked her paws. It was driving me just plain nutty until I found out about the GOOey Peanut Butter solution (see below)…

Signs your dog has allergies:

  • Biting hind quarters
  • Scratching or pawing at her ears
  • Shaking her head from side to side
  • Yeasty smell from ears
  • Uncontrollable itching and licking
  • Brown, rough spots on her knees
  • Hot Spots
  • Watery eyes
  • Runny nose or dry, crusty nose
  • Hair loss (shearing of hair on any part of the body)
  • Scabby or scaly patches on skin
  • Behavioral changes
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Excessive shedding

Causes of dog allergies:

  • Inhalant / seasonal… pollen during any season of the year (similar to hay fever in humans)
  • Food sensitivites… beef, chicken, dairy, corn/grain etc
  • Environmental… dust mites, mold, grass, wool, feathers, ticks, mosquitoes, the list is endless and Zoe has most of them
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Yeast or bacterial infections
For canine allergy sufferers, about 85 percent of the time the culprit is mold, dust mites, pollen and other environmental factors – not food as so many people suspect.

Solution:  Doggy Goo

Dr. Kristin Holm DVM Veterinary Dermatologist has created Doggy GOO, an amazing product that dogs and their owners LOVE. Dogs LOVE to lick it off the spoon (it’s peanut butter, YUM). Cici thinks it’s a tasty treat. We heartily recommend this product because of the ease of delivery to the dog and fun watching said dog LICK IT lickity split… LOL…

Meanwhile, Doggy GOO builds Immune System Tolerance to Environmental Allergens, as well as supports balances the functionality and immune response health in Cici.

Whether you wish to Pre-emptively build Immune Tolerance to Enviro Allergens in your Puppy or young Dog, Or if you have a Dog that is Allergy Stressed, Doggy GOO offers You and your Pet a Sublingual GOO-Licious, 100% Natural, Allergy CARE Option that has been Clinically shown to bring immune system balance and health back to your Dog.

A recent Veterinary Dermatologist Clinical Study / Abstract indicates that Sublingual Delivery i.e. Doggy GOO is Equal to Allergy “Ouch” Shots for immunotherapy neutralization of Dust Mite Allergy.

Doggy GOO sublingually builds Immune System Tolerance to 3 Grass, 3 Tree, 4 Weed Pollens, 2 Mites and 3 Molds.

The “GOO” in Doggy GOO™ is the best Organic Peanut Butter on today’s “Human” market.

A word about Peanut Butter…

When you Think American, you think Mom, Apple Pie, Hot Dogs, Baseball, Football, NASCAR and of course PB & J ! Found in 75% of American homes, Peanut Butter is as American as it gets. What child or adult, in the gut wrenching ravages of hunger has not grabbed a jar of their favorite peanut butter, their sweet tooth craving jelly, jam or preserve, maybe a little butter and a loaf of bread and hunkered down to make the most favorite tasty snack on the planet… PB & J ! To call Peanut Butter a Food is a vast injustice to this humble appetite quenching, protein filled powerhouse. For many, Peanut Butter transcends the definition of a Food. It moves beyond a Snack, almost approaching a cult or state of nirvana. Satisfying a craving that can only be filled by the combination of peanut butter with preserves, onions, mustard, mayonnaise, hard boiled eggs, banana, chocolate, oatmeal, ricotta, on an hamburger, in a smoothie.. you name it ! From its humble roots since first being developed in 1890, when a St. Louis physician suggested processing and packaging ground peanut paste into a nutritious protein substitute.  To now, when Top Chefs all over the world have embraced this GOOey substance for it’s taste, versatility and creative possibilities in some of today’s most innovative dishes!

And

DOGs LOVE Peanut Butter!

Dr. Kristin says, “We chose 100% Natural Peanut Butter for a number of critical reasons. To begin, DOGs just Luv Peanut Butter, which ensures high “Patient / Dog Compliance” for Doggy GOO’s allergy focus. And because Doggy GOO is regarded as a Tasty Treat by your Dog, Pet Parent compliance is also virtually guaranteed to keep both the Pet and Pet Parent’s GOO Allergy Fight going!”

Dr. Kristin further explains, “But there is more to GOO than meets the Dog’s Taste Buds. You see, Peanut Butter was not only chosen for its Tasty Treat appeal, but for its Lick / Lick / Lick GOOey-ness. You see, Doggy GOO employs what is called a Sublingual Delivery methodology in its fight against Canine Allergies. Whereby the Pet Parent is told to spread a small amount of Doggy GOO onto a clean bowl or plate and the Dog has to repeatedly Lick / Lick / Lick up their GOO. While this is a GOO-Licious Tasty Treat for the Dog, with every GOO Lick, small amounts of Enviro Allergy ingredients are brought into the Dogs mouth, where the mouth is slathered with GOO Juice. It is via this GOO Juice presence to the thin mucosal skin of the Dog’s mouth that the Allergy ingredients are Sublingually absorbed into the bloodstream. Which following absorption, the Allergy Ingredient Bio-Availability to the BloodStream begins to leverage the adaptive power of the immune system to build tolerance to these offending allergy sources and begins to work its Allergy Magic.

in other words, Doggy GOO is Dog GOO-ilicious…

Take your dog to work day

Got Dogs?

According to a 2012 survey by the American Pet Products Association, 62 percent of U.S. households own a pet. That means that millions of four-legged friends are sitting home bored each day with nothing to do but chew up your shoes and shred your custom curtains. However, you can do something about it — and least for one day: Take your dog to work with you!

what are the benefits of bringing your dog to work?

besides, no more worrying about what they are doing to destroy your home while they are left alone…

Dogs make great lap and foot warmers

Encourage talk around the water cooler

Assist with the mail and mail persons… Dogs especially like to open cardboard boxes

Search and Rescue old lost files

Increase productivity

The American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA) found a way to enhance performance levels and promote office efficiency at work.  They found that when employees took their pets to work, it created a more productive work environment in 73 percent of the participating companies.

Small companies and Big companies like dogs at work

While only 17 percent of U.S. employers currently allow animals in the workplace, according to a survey from the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, pet-friendly, often specifically dog-friendly, environments are building steam. From major companies like GoogleZynga, and Amazon.com to growing start-ups (some featured in Inc.’s Winning Workplaces), more and more canine companions are showing up to work.

More benefits:

Stress Reduction

Man’s best friend may make a positive difference in the workplace by reducing stress and making the job more satisfying for other employees, according to a Virginia Commonwealth University study.

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/03/120330081235.htm

Entertainment

Dog antics make for fun interactions with co-workers and bosses… and make everyone laugh.

Save Money

You won’t have to pay a pet sitter or doggie daycare or replace items chewed up by said dog.

Boost Morale, Team Trust and Inspire Creativity

Researchers from Central Michigan University first brought together 12 groups of four individuals and asked each group to come up with a 15-second advertisement for a fictitious product. Some of the groups had dogs around while they worked on this project and some didn’t. Afterward, they were asked how they felt about working with their teammates. Those from groups that had a dog ranked the others on their teams more highly on measures of trust, team cohesion and intimacy than did members in the groups who had no canine companionship while they worked.

The same investigators conducted another experiment with 13 groups in order to see how the presence of a dog affected team member behavior in the game “prisoner’s dilemma.” All four members of each group had been “charged” with a crime and each one of them had a choice of snitching on their teammates or not. This is a complicated game, but the upshot was interesting: members of teams that had a dog with them were 30 percent less likely to snitch on a team member, compared to the snitching habits of teams who didn’t include dogs in the workplace.

Ranger Lori Oberhofer and Python Pete (pictured) work together to track down and remove pythons from Everglades National Park in Florida. These pythons came to South Florida as pets and when people no longer want or cannot care for them, they are often released into the Everglades.

Due to their high intelligence, Labrador retrievers are often used as guide dogs for the blind, for search-and-rescue teams, or in narcotics detection with law enforcement, like this yellow Lab which helped Colombia’s police seize three tons of drugs.

Tips on successful visits

Plan for a safe, successful visit:

* Take only well-behaved pets who are comfortable and reliably safe around strangers. Leave pets who show aggressive tendencies towards people at home.

* Make sure your dog understands the basic commands, such as SIT, STAY and DOWN.

* Take only pups or dogs who have been socialized to people and other animals.

Dogfather’s day gifts

Sunday, June 17 is Dad’s Day… here are some last minute gift ideas for dads with dogs…

books from a dog’s point of view

Spencer Quinn’s book series about Chet the dog, a canine sleuth, who helps his owner Bernie solve mysteries in his own way, from his dog’s perspective, make good reading and summer reading…

http://celiasue.com/2011/08/30/the-doggie-detective/

The new book in the series, A FISTFUL OF COLLARS, will be on sale in September. In the meanwhile, help dad catch up to date with the The Dog Who Knew Too Much and other books in the series.

strap caddy

Drivers in many places face laws where they have to drive with hands-free devices and many others are facing legislation headed in that direction.  Here’s a great idea for dad hitting the road this summer who is looking for a great new way to stay hands-free with his cell phone.

Introducing the StrapCaddy, that is designed for hands-free talking.  It can hold an iPhone 4 and 4S securely while dad uses the iPhone’s speakerphone.  The StrapCaddy is perfect for dads on the go who doesn’t have or doesn’t want to use Bluetooth devices.  It stays on the vehicle seatbelt and is ready to be used anytime.  The StrapCaddy is inexpensive and portable, making it the perfect for trips or for dads who do not want to clutter the interior of their cars with clumsy phone mounts.

It’s the perfect idea for a dad with an iPhone.  The StrapCaddy fits any iPhone 4 or 4S and will soon be available for HTC Android phones

puplight

Puplight2  is twice as bright as the standard Puplight safety light and comes with a reflective collar.  helps dogs with poor vision see better

1. PupLight makes dogs visible up to a mile a way. PupLight is visible from all angles and the dog walkers body doesn’t block the light from behind like most other products because the illumination makes a very visible halo of light. PupLight keeps dogs safe and visible on or off-leash.

2. PupLight provides so much light with it’s 3 ultra bright white LEDs you can see yards ahead of the dog when walking on leash. This allows you to see hazards ahead. Dead animals, poisonous animals, rancid food, holes, uneven sidewalk, ice. This added funtionality makes it the best product for dog walking.

3. The super bright light helps dogs see better. (Dogs 10 years+ or with cataracts can’t see well in the dark any more and they, in particular, like PupLight.)

4. It’s the only dog light that uses AAA batteries so it’s much less expensive to use over time when compared to other lighted dog products. You can also use re-chargeable batteries with it. The batteries are long lasting (up to 150 hours)and easy to change

5. PupLight was designed with long hair dogs in mind. Much of the light from a lighted collar is covered up by the fur of a long-haired dog. PupLight has a fur guard which keeps the dogs hair away from the light.

6. It comes with an easy on easy off adjustable elastic band so it’s easy to use. The collar is not attached to the leash so the light stays focused forward.

7. The light is adjustable and has a rim on top so it doesn’t shine in to your dogs or anyone else’s eyes.

8. The bright lights scare away wild animals

PupLight makes your nighttime dog walks safe and enjoyable and makes your dog visible off leash.

letters to Belfast and beyond

 UPDATE:

http://celiasue.com/2012/07/13/justice-for-lennox/

http://celiasue.com/2012/07/08/pardon-lennox/

Lennox is scheduled to DIE on Monday or Tuesday, July 9 or 10, 2012.

WORLDWIDE protests…

Victoria Stilwell, Jeff Coltenback, Cesar Millan and even the Italian ministers have offered HOMES for Lennox… at their OWN Expense… NO response yet… Awaiting Victoria Stilwell’s message since she is in Belfast meeting with the family and the Belfast City Council.

Here is a letter I wrote and a list of celebrities on twitter.  Ask Ellen and Anderson to have the Barnes family on the show to tell their story.

Dear Betty White, Brad Pitt, Katherine Heigl, Alicia Silverstone, Martha Stewart, Rachael Ray, Jon Stewart, Madonna, Linda Blair, Jennifer Aniston, Bernadette Peters, and other dog lovers,

    • A disabled child and her service dog need your help asap.
    • Brooke Barnes is a 13 year old girl in Belfast, Ireland. Her dog, Lennox, was taken from her home in May 2010 because “he looks like a pit bull.” He is an American Bulldog and Labrador mix.  He has been isolated, left to sit in his own feces in a concrete cell hidden away from the world for two years now while the Barnes family have had to share their plight and go through legislation hierarchy in Ireland in order to get Brooke’s dog back. Lennox is Brooke’s “bestest friend.”
    • He is NOT a dangerous dog according to dog trainer experts Victoria Stilwell and Cesar Millan.
    • In fact, Lennox was at home with his family when officials from the Belfast city Council came to visit and seized him because “he looked like a pit bull.” He never showed any sign of aggression. He was mostly at home, muzzled and leashed when taken out in public, microchipped, neutered and in good health.
    • Now Lennox and Brooke’s health are both failing due to this long ordeal. And another Judge has ordered that Lennox be destroyed, based on the testimony of a Dog Warden. There are photos of this Dog Warden with Lennox showing him licking her in the face (see link to article below for proof).
    • Clearly, Lennox needs to GO HOME. He is not a danger to anyone. And Brooke and his family need him to be safe.
    • Can you please help Lennox GO HOME?
    • Thank you.
    • Sincerely,

The Patrick Movement for NJ

A special request (as posted) ~~

“Would everyone please write an understated, respectful, non-hysterical plea to the Belfast City Council? I wrote one, you are welcome to use it or just compose one from the heart. These are not petitions or hate letters; just appeals to reason and compassion; we have nothing to lose by trying.

“To: complaints@belfastcity.gov.uk

here is my letter:
Dear Sirs,

Everyone in life has a choice to make each day, myriad of choices every day… to act for the highest good of all or not.. to hurt other people or to not inflict unnecessary pain. to play the role of a hero or a villain.  every time we make a choice, we step UP or FALL DOWN.  NO ONE ELSE is responsible for the choices we make. We are each, held accountable, as individuals for our choices.

What choice are YOU going to make regarding Lennox, an innocent dog who has been vilified for the way he looks and NO OTHER REASONABLE REASON?

Many thousands of people around the world are watching and DO NOT understand how you possibly have been able to justify taking an innocent service dog away from an innocent DISABLED child for two years, refused the dog all contact with his family, held him in isolated and dirty conditions, not allowed him to see a vet for his illness and other heartless cruelties all for the sake of WHAT???  Fear of what might happen????

Other options have been offered to you besides murdering this dog and so far our pleas have fallen on deaf ears. Famous dog experts from around the world have tried to intervene for the sake of the dog and his family.

The dog experts agree that Lennox is NOT a dangerous dog…

Does Lennox fit any of the criteria for a dangerous dog set forth in the Pit Bull Placebo by Karen Delise (a 20 year well researched book by a dog expert)?

Let’s look at the facts:

he supposedly LOOKS like a pit bull, that is his ONLY crime, you say he looks like a pit bull therefore, he must die?  he is a bulldog/Labradog cross  for this he must die?

he is not intact, he is neutered

not been chained up, he IS a beloved socialized therapy and family dog

not a guard dog

previous to his isolation, he was not an abused nor neglected dog

not a starved dog

not an unsupervised dog

never shown any sign of aggression, even in photos with your dog wardens

Lennox is NOT NOT NOT a dangerous dog yet he has been sentenced to die in Belfast, Ireland for no reason other than his looks????

Will you act IN GOOD FAITH TODAY AND LET LENNOX GO HOME or to a new home if you deem that necessary or will the eyes of the world watching you have to witness yet another cruel act done by you?????  Will you cause more pain today or will you let LOVE and wisdom Prevail????

It is your choice.

We pray that you DO THE RIGHT THING and take the HIGH ROAD and CHOOSE WISELY for the sake of a DISABLED CHILD and her family and the rest of humanity.

Sincerely,

CeliaSue Hecht
