Be the Change: Speak Out

Animals cannot speak so it is important for us to be their voice

If you see a hurt, abandoned, neglected, abused, dying animal, please stand UP and speak OUT for them and keep on speaking and standing until Justice is served.

A few recent examples below:

We are strategizing to change the policies of the Denver police department. Harley is a dog that was injured from being hit by a car, the Denver Police Department stood there for over 90 minutes without giving the dog any comfort or allowed any medical help at all as he lay there whimpering in pain. Their claim is that they needed to wait for Animal Control. Animal Control did not arrive for 90 minutes. PLUS, the police threatened to arrest a neighbor who was willing to take Harley to the hospital with the intimidation tactic that he would be interfering with an investigation. There was no investigation. The police didn’t allow this neighbor to help this dog or soothe him in any way, no blanket. Nothing. I am still unclear if Harley died before Animal Control arrived 90 minutes later or while he was being transported to wherever Animal Control was going to transport him. Either way, The Denver Police Department allowed this elderly dog of 14 years old to suffer for over 90 minutes without anyone helping him or showing him any love.

Stand Up for Pibbles

Angels come in all forms. And many pibble (pit bull) owners would say that their canine is an angel come to earth to teach humans all about love, compassion and kindness.

One of these angel canines just happens to be named Angel. Her guardian, actress and comedian Rebecca Corry seeks to create safe and humane communities for humans and animals and to raise awareness about the abuse and discrimination against pit bull terriers and discuss solutions for this growing problem.

Some of Rebecca’s guest star appearances include: “The King of Queens,” “The Bernie Mac Show,” “Rules Of Engagement,” “Rizzoli and Isles,” as well as appearances on “The Wayne Brady Show,” NBC’s “Late Friday,” “Comics Unleashed,” E’s 101 series,” Vh1s “Best Week Ever,” Comedy Central’s “Premium Blend” and her own 1/2 hour Comedy Central Presents 1/2 hour special.

On May 16th 2013 the HUFFINGTON POST announced Corry’s plan to march on Washington  DC http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/16/one-million-pibble-march_n_3280839.html?1368716232 and more recently she discussed her thoughts on President Barack Obama coming out against BSL and joining the fight for Pit Bulls http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/20/obama-breed-specific-legislation_n_3785911.html?utm_hp_ref=dc

Rebecca Corry’s pit bull terrier, Angel was found roaming the streets of Los Angeles as a victim of horrific abuse. Her body was riddled with scars and acid burns. She has damaged knees and her ears have been shorn, likely with scissors. It is believed that the dog was overbred and used as a bait dog during dog fights.

Screen shot 2014-03-29 at 12.19.02 PM

Through a live, nationwide comedy show with performers such as Bill Burr, Kaley Cuoco and Whitney Cummings, Rebecca’s Stand Up for Pits Foundation raises money to positively advocate and educate about the true nature of Pibbles (kind, loving, sweet, gentle).

Angel and Rebecca are also hoping to speak to President Obama in Washington DC on May 3, 2014 at the One Million Pibble March she is organizing on the west lawn at the Capitol from 12:30 – 2:00 pm.

Screen shot 2014-03-29 at 12.18.49 PM

“My goal is to create safe and humane communities for humans and pets by advocating, educating and offering solutions,” said One Million PIBBLE March organizer Rebecca Corry.  “This is not just an animal issue; it is a social issue that affects us all. It is proven people who commit violent acts against animals will likely — and most often times do go on to — commit crimes against humanity.  The targeting of pit bull terriers is an obvious reflection of a broken society, but one that can be fixed.  The PIBBLE March provides us a national platform to be the voice of millions of voiceless victims, and we will be heard. Abuse and discrimination can no longer be tolerated.”

The event is attracting attendees from all over the United States as well as Canada, England and Germany. With more than 5,000 registered attendees to date and growing

Roo Yori, pet parent to Hector (a former dog of Michael Vick’s Bad Newz Kennels) and Wallace, world champion disc dog, will be one of the guest speakers along with numerous celebrities, sports figures, and comedians.

“I think any time you have a large group of people standing up for dogs that need help, it’s a good thing. Dogs need people to be their voice when it comes to laws and policies, so I’m honored to be chosen as one of the speakers to try and make positive change. I hope I do them proud,” said Roo.

  • Key-note speaker Jamie Buehrle, wife of Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Mark Buehrle, whose family has been personally affected by discrimination and forced to live apart due to BSL laws
  •     Leah Brewer, owner of the first-ever hero Pibble, Elle the Hero Dog of 2013

While Angel and some of the speaker’s dogs will be in attendance, the event is focused on human voices for their dogs. Other dogs will not be allowed at the event. Here’s why:

“Dogs are not allowed at the march because, simply put, dogs cannot change laws, the U.S. Capitol is not a dog park and this is not an opportunity to make it one. This is an opportunity for humans to be their voice. Having dogs there provides no impact and offers no solutions to ending discrimination and abuse. In addition, putting any dog of any breed in a stressful situation while trying to advocate for them is reckless and quite honestly, stupid. This event is happening for two very specific reasons:  to end discrimination and abuse. The only way that can happen is if humans attend. I can understand wanting to bring your dog, but the United States Capitol West Lawn will be respected.”

“The hardest part about saving dogs is humans.” — Rebecca Corry

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rebecca-corry/no-dogs_b_4567976.html

You know that as far as I am concerned, our society is completely backwards in the way it treats victims of most crimes. Too many times the rapists, abusers and real criminals get off scot free and the victims are blamed. Blaming pit bulls is like blaming black people for slavery, the Jews for the Holocaust, and/or victims of abuse and rape for the depraved acts of their abusers and rapists. This HAS to change.

If dogs could talk,  I am 1,000% sure that if given the choice between fighting other dogs and living a desperate lonely terrifying life on chains, being overbred, being thrown into pit rings as bait dogs, and ultimately dying a horrific bloody death, that the dogs would choose instead to be someone’s beloved pet, safe inside the home, a family member, with a comfortable life. And they also LOVE staying at pet friendly hotels.

Which makes me think of my darling Cici. Yesterday i came out to the living room where her crate is. She usually rests in it. But instead, I found her lounging on the couch, all spread out, comfortable in her habitat. When I came near, she wagged her tail, rolled onto her back and showed me her belly for rubbing. Gee, what a life she has !  A truly pampered Polka Dot Princess.  And she deserves it just as all pets do.

We hope the power of our collective voices, in this national forum, will help educate offenders and legislators alike. We would be deeply honored if you would come and address us with a few words of support and encouragement of your own, at this historic event. Thank you.

Dogcott the Olympics

people make all kinds of stupid, mean and unintentionally wrong remarks on Facebook and the Internet, about gay people, about dogs, about pit bulls in particular and more…

I am noticing that people use pit bull when they want to indicate a mean or scary or even a big dog. for instance, one author I read wrote about her friend being able to wrestle a 160 pound pit bull. this was in a book. i wrote to the person and told her that there ain’t no such thing. that pit bulls, aka American Pit Bull Terriers, Pit Bull Terriers and American Staffordshire Terriers, are average between 40-80 pounds. And to say a 160 pound pit bull makes the dog sound really scary, right. Not good for the breed, thank you very much. She wrote back thanking me and told me that her friend had a chow pit bull mix. Well, a chow can be a big dog. And so can Aussie Shepherds, Labs, Goldens, Rotties and other dog breeds but not pit bull breeds. so if you want to talk about wrestling a DOG, say a dog, or a BIG breed of dog like those mentioned, capiche?

Someone else today wrote about a pit bull tearing apart toilet paper. What that visual was supposed to connote am not sure. But again, why not just a dog or cat tore apart the toilet paper? sounds scarier saying a pit bull and continues the big bad mean myth.

Meanwhile, numerous communities are repealing, overturning and doing away with their breed bans, yay. Mixed bag, right.

Now, what is happening in Russia is a big travesty and people are boycotting the Olympics due to the fact that stray dogs in Sochi are being killed to prepare for the Olympics. They were called disposable waste. Also, Russian treatment of gay people is abominable. And there are other problems going on there, too.

1012045_10152051536648369_1404605883_n

“In a phone interview with ABC News, Sorokin described the extermination as a public service. He described the animals as “ biological trash” and said that Sochi has “an epidemic of rabies”.

“I am for the right of people to walk the streets without fear of being attacked by packs of dogs,” he said.

“The practice of hunting stray dogs has become common in Russia, where they are widely visible throughout many city streets. Sterilisation is not common and many owners simply abandon their pets.”

a resscue group is trying to save the dogs that are left.

“Hundreds of dogs have already been killed. Authorities have told the organization they have until today, before Friday’s opening ceremonies, and any dogs left will be shot.

“Rescued dogs are being taken to a shelter called PovoDog, outside of the city.  Organization workers say many pets were left behind by families displaced by the construction for the games. And, construction workers attracted the dogs to stick around by feeding them.

“Rescue workers began their efforts this past October. They report up to 300 dogs were being killed a month.

“The Volnoe Deloe rescue is backed by Russian billionaire Oleg V. Deripaska.

Do NOT kill these dogs!

Please share, lend your voice and tell Santa Ana supervisors in Orange County, California not to destroy ANY dog fighting dogs. They are having a meeting in a few days, January 28, and want to just kill all the dogs that have been seized from dog fighting rings. Write them off as dangerous, vicious and be done with the dogs. THIS IS NOT OK.

All of the former Michael Vick dogs are living role models and testimony to the idea that ALL of these dogs deserve a Second Chance at LIFE. It is not the dogs fault that they have been forced to fight other dogs. Penalize the dog fighters not the dogs.

Eight of the former MV dogs are therapy dogs. Many are living in happy, loving homes with kids, other dogs and cats, too thanks to BadRap, Best Friends, Monterey SPCA and all the others that saved their lives and gave them a second chance.
Dog fighting is a CRIME. Punish the dog fighters not their victims…

from BadRap:

ACTION ALERT:

Dear Friends of Jonny Justice, Audie, Hector, Handsome Dan & Company. Remember when you helped us send hundreds of copies of ‘The Lost Dogs’ to the Obamas in 2011 to help educate our President about the plight of pit bulls? You can bet you helped seed the anti-BSL statement that came out of the White House during Obama’s second term, and we LOVE you for that. Creative, positive, political action WORKS.

Now we need you again. Do you have eight dollars to spare? The Orange County (CA) Board of Supervisors would like to destroy dogs that come from cruelty (dog fighting) cases in their county. We don’t know why. It could be that they aren’t aware that all dogs are individuals and survivors of terrible backgrounds defy the odds every single day. Please consider sending one or more of the board members a softcover copy of ‘Saving Audie’ – as a way to demonstrate what may be lost if they move forward with their no-mercy policy. If you order from Amazon today or tomorrow, they will get rec’v it in time for their meeting & vote on Jan 28. If you live in Orange County – please speak up. The dogs need you now! Thank you!

JUSTICE for Kiya

probably by now you have heard about Puppy Doe aka Kiya…

Over the weekend, hundreds held a vigil for the puppy in Quincy, MA… the dog loving community has come together to speak out against this horrific abuse.

If you have any information whatsoever about this case, please contact:

Animal Rescue League of Boston’s Law Enforcement Department at 617-226-5610, e-mail cruelty@arlboston.org.

Or

Quincy Police Department, Detective Thomas Pepdjonovich at 617-745-5774

Mainstream media

http://bostonherald.com/news_opinion/columnists/margery_eagan/2013/09/nutty_or_not_puppy_doe_mourners_driven_by_compassion

A response:

In this case, the mass consciousness is that of thousands of people shocked, stunned, frightened, and enraged by acts of torture inflicted on a mere puppy over a long extended period of time. And YOU think that our sorrow and anguish is nutty? I feel that your commitment to playing to mainstream readers has you confused about depth of character, human intelligence, and the higher ground approach to co-existing with other species on this planet. You, Ms. Eagan, by the fact that you are a journalist in a large publication are in the place of being a voice of leadership. In this case, you are the voice of a piddling, low class, pathetic, and cheap shot punk writer who does not have the depth of character development to face the pain elicited by knowing the atrocities that this poor puppy endured.

Some folks have also been creating petitions to Craig Newmark, founder of Craigslist asking that Craigslist stop offering free pets to good homes or to post a warning.

below is my email to Craig:

Dear Craig, I am sure by now that you  know about Puppy Doe aka Kiya, the dog who was horrifically abused and tortured and had to be euthanized. Her owner put her up for adoption on craigslist.
While I know that not every dog who is put up for adoption on Craigslist is abused, too many have been.  It is already well known among rescues that Craigslist “free to a good home” pets are often subject to violence & abuse and this is an extremely horrific situation.
Please consider changing your pets policy (free to a good home) and/or post a warning on the pet page to let people know that free pets are too often abused, used as bait dogs by dog fighters, and DO NOT FIND GOOD HOMES.
It is well known by law enforcement that serial killers start off by killing and abusing animals. I am sure that you do not wish to make it easy for serial killers to harm any animals but these sociopaths are using Craigslist for just that purpose. There needs to be a SAFE PLACE for animals so that they are NOT exploited, abused and harmed just because they need a home.
There are solutions that can be found.
For the sake of these innocent animals, dogs and cats, please please please be a CHAMPION for animals and CHANGE your pet policy.
Thank you.
CS
Here is Craig’s response to me:

I do believe that we can CHANGE this situation. No matter how upset you may feel, angry or sad, please compose yourself when communicating with Craig or the authorities.

I wrote back to Craig and said this:

Craig, thank you for your timely response…

It seems that we agree that people should ask for a rehoming fee rather than offering animals for free… do you have that posted somewhere on Craigslist?

some facts…

No Kill Shelters are NOT full… the very nature of TRUE No Kill Shelters are that animals are adopted and fostered, that there is an ebb and flow of animals coming in and going out. For instance, the Nevada Humane http://www.nevadahumanesociety.org/

3-6 million pets are killed in shelters every year NOT NOT NOT because there are no homes or too many animals but because some shelters are killing animals and refuse to stop even when they have empty cages… There is a NO KILL movement that has a proven recipe of actions that can be taken IF/WHEN a shelter wants to STOP KILLING healthy adoptable pets. For the last two years on June 11, Nathan Winograd, the No Kill Advocacy Center has issued a challenge to shelters across the country to PUT DOWN THEIR NEEDLES for JUST ONE DAY, and many thousands of animals have been adopted that would have been killed.

http://www.nathanwinograd.com/

There is a long list of animals that have been killed and abused. There are heartless people who get animals from Craigslist and other places and abuse them and use them for dog fighting bait. I do not have the stats on this.

Thanks again.

CS

If you know something about the abuser that can help the police capture the abuser, please come forward.

Our prayers are that the abuser is found asap and sent to prison for a long time… that JUSTiCE for Kiya / Puppy Doe is served. And that there are enacted laws with stricter penalties for abuse and torture and cruelty of animals in EVERY state.

Just as there has been enacted in NJ, a Patrick’s Law, there should be Kiya’s Law in Massachusetts.

Evil like this cannot be allowed to flourish.  When a group of committed good people come together, stand together and say NO with one accord, JUSTICE PREVAILS.

Patrick Scavelli!!!!

The Good News is that Patrick is FOREVER in the home of the Scavelli’s….  YAHOOO !!!!

It is OFFICIAL:  Patrick gets to stay with the Scavelli’s!!!!!   Congratulations to the Scavelli’s on their latest addition, for taking such good care of Patrick, very exciting !!!!

Patrick Court Update : Will post information later BUT I would like everyone to know that Patrick is now PATRICK SCAVELLI, it is official the Scavelli’s were granted legal custody of Patrick. NJSPCA could not be happier with the outcome for Patrick and the Scavelli’s. Thank you all for your support. Capt Yocum

The Bad News

all Kisha Curtis got was 18 months probation for starving a dog, neglecting and abandoning him and almost killing Patrick.  if she had killed Patrick, what would she have gotten 30 days in jail??????  this sucks

we have waited more than two years to hear her verdict… and yes, Patrick’s Law just went into effect with higher penalties so WHY DIDN’T SHE GET JAIL????

http://www.therepublic.com/view/story/f0fed45972f740aa8dcaec5cc79d1a52/NJ–Dog-in-Trash

What do you think?  Yes, am happy that Patrick is well, happy and healthy with the Scavelli’s… but Kisha Curtis deserves to be in jail for at least a couple of years or more… She has a few kids, maybe the judge thought it better for her to stay home and abuse, neglect, abandon and starve them.

Gawd.

my major concerns are that KC did not even know/understand that she did anything wrong, she kept pleading not guilty and there is no remorse nor learning if a person does not get that they did something wrong to begin with…

and what kind of message does this send to other abusers? if Patrick’s Law really means something then how about starting with the case that called for the need for it… if Patrick’s Law has no teeth, then why bother? to pretend you did something?  abusers need to be held accountable for their actions

a bouncing healthy boy Patrick Scavelli… It’s Official…

Patrick’s Law is on in NJ

Gov. Chris Christie on August 7, 2013, signed “Patrick’s Law,” (S1303) which was named after our beloved and emaciated pit bull found after he had been thrown down a trash chute.  increases penalties for cruelty, for starving an animal…

Kisha Curtis pled guilty to abusing Patrick and will be sentenced on August 29…

Racism in America

I realize that people are horrified and in pain over the UNJUST Zimmerman acquittal. Trayvon Martin would be ALIVE today if George Zimmerman had not stalked him and gotten out of his truck. We all know that and we know that if Zimmerman had been black and Martin white, Zimmerman would be in jail now for many years to come. Racism is alive in America in 2013 and MAKES ME SICK TO MY CORE.

Our hearts are broken for the Martin family’s loss. Words do not express what I want to say so suffice that.

Please support the work the family of Trayvon Martin is doing in his memory …   http://www.TrayvonMartinFoundation.org/ please share

I agree with the assessment below and hope that civil suits will be filed against Zimmerman.

 ‏@TheRealRoseanne

10m

thinking, ‘they know not what they do’ They’ve made all kids targets. This is one of the most evil verdicts in American History.

Now,, having said that some people on twitter and facebook are saying that Casey Anthony got off scot free (yeah, another terrible verdict) in Florida, and others and they throw in Michael Vick, as if to say that Trayvon was treated worse than a dog… That as a black kid he was convicted of his own murder.  I agree with that AND DISAGREE WITH THE MISSTATEMENT ABOUT VICK… TRAYVON’S LIFE DID AND DOES MATTER.

Given that I write about dogs and know a lot about the Vick case, I have to set this straight. Vick did not go to jail for a dog.

Vick got two years for gambling. despite his killing 8+ dogs with his bare hands, and in horrific ways, (and he did this for 6-8 YEARS)… he was never charged with animal cruelty nor abuse, so he got only two years, instead of the many years he deserves…. if you look at the court docs and read The Lost Dogs book by Jim Gorant … Equating Vick and Trayvon is CRAZY… Trayvon was an innocent kid and Vick is a psychopathic serial dog killer, NO COMPARISON THERE.

so this is where this crap came from… Marcus Vick’s brother says George Zimmerman deserved 30 years in jail, well, so did his brother Michael Vick…

http://www.inquisitr.com/848148/michael-vick-had-it-worse-than-george-zimmerman-marcus-vick-claims/

NO JUSTICE in either case… numerous dogs still SUFFER from what Vick did to them although they are now in loving homes, 8 have become therapy dogs, etc. but some are still terrified of strangers and being in strange situations, and the dogs have had to overcome A LOT of PTSD, trauma from Bad Newz… Poor Cherry slept with his EYES OPEN for the first year (or six months) and had to be carried. The dogs were so shut down and scared for their lives. Little Red was used as a bait dog. And so on…

If you listen to the interviews with their pet guardians you will know some of what what the dogs experienced was horrific beyond imagination, Vick got off easy as far as I am concerned. And comparing Trayvon to Vick does NO JUSTICE to Trayvon and compares a child to a python snake.

How the NRA and ALEC got the Stand Your Ground law passed in Florida and spread nationwide. If you care about the Trayvon verdict, you need to read this.

Celebrities and pit bulls

beautiful story… we applaud, appreciate and love to hear these tales about celebrities who love their pit bulls and advocate for them. The more that this information gets out into the public arena, the better for us pit bull guardians/advocates and the dogs we love.

http://hollywoodjournal.com/making-a-difference/producing-pit-bulls-and-preconception/20130225/

Last week actor James Gandolfini, best known for his role in the show Sopranos, died of a heart attack in Italy. As people mourn his death, we have been heartened to hear that his last/final film, a crime drama Animal Rescue, is the story of an abandoned pit bull pup rescued from a dumpster. His own dog, a pit bull named Duke, was his companion and it has been said that this film will bring to light the horrors of BSL and awareness to the plight of pit bulls.

Happy Patrick day

Happy 2nd Re-Birthday, Patrick! We will NEVER forget nor ever stop hurting from what you endured at the hands of a monster, but we will not let evil win. Your suffering started a world-wide, anti-cruelty campaign and helped millions of animals. We LOVE you and are grateful for your NEW LIFE!

Imagine there’s no cruelty

It’s easy if you try
No abuse, starvation or neglect
Above us only sky
Imagine all the pit bulls
Living in loving homes…

Imagine there’s no BSL
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or fight for
And no dog fighters too
Imagine all the pit bulls
Living life in peace…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no kill lists
I wonder if you can
No need for chains, puppy mills, or shelters
A brotherhood of canine and human
Imagine all the pit bulls
Sharing all the world…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one
