Summer Fun in Doggie Heaven

Enjoying Carmel with your best friend

Canine travelers and their best friends love Carmel for a good reason. It is the epitome of a dog friendly place. Rated #1 dog friendly town in USA. Below are some of the most dog friendly places, events and activities you can enjoy during your stay. And what better time to visit Carmel then during the summer when the living is easy. Temperatures in Carmel year round are in the 50-70’s so if you wanna get away from the heat, Carmel is the place to take your pooch to paradise.

Fun facts about Carmel

http://www.carmelcalifornia.com/fun-facts-about-carmel.htm

Every year around Halloween, the city of Carmel has a dog friendly parade to celebrate the city’s birthday. This year’s bash is their 98th anniversary. The Carmel Chamber of Commerce hosts this event.

Carmel beach

Carmel Beach. Ocean Ave and Scenic Road.  Carmel Beach is a doggie paradise and one of the few leash-free beaches in California. There are 120 parking spaces at the end of Ocean Avenue. It can be a very busy place and chaotic with lots of doggie pals to meet and play with. Spanning from Carmel Beach to Carmel River Beach, the Scenic Road path offers some of the area’s most incredible views of Carmel Point, Point Lobos State Reserve, Pebble Beach Golf Links, and Carmel’s famous Cypress trees and white-sand beach.

This is Carmel’s largest park at 35 acres, and features 5 miles of well maintained trails.  The trails wind through canyons and hillsides with five different habitats.  Mission Trail Park is a great place to take your dog walking and a wonderful place for bird watching.

There are five park entrances: Rio Road, 11th and Torres, Crespi Avenue and Mountain View Avenue, Martin Road, and 25800 Hatton Road, the location of Flanders Mansion and the Lester Rowntree Native Plant Garden.

Mission Trail Park has a forested canyon fed by a small stream, hillside meadows on the east, and views of Carmel Point and the Pacific to the west.

You can also hike with your dog at Garland Ranch Regional Park, just eight miles east on Carmel Valley Road. Waterfall Trail has lots of steps to get Fido good and tired or take Mesa Trail for a leisurely ramble. Dogs can be off leash if they are under voice control and there is plenty to sniff and explore.

Happy Dog Travels

Whenever we travel, Cici has her own bag filled with goodies just for her… these are gotta haves, bring with us items that are crucial for a safe, happy trip. And below, we are sharing some of these items with you.

Some these items came in Cici’s Pet Box (the ones with a *)…a wonderful pick and choose pack filled with items that doggies love and need. One of the things we LOVE about PetBox is that PetBox gives you the option to pack your own box. And the items you have to choose from are not just any old products. They are premium products such as the ones below. Monthly subscriptions … we also love the cardboard box that the items come in. Another cool thing is that for every PetBox purchased, they feed a rescue animal. Oh and cats are not left out in the cold either. There are cat boxes, too.

Screen shot 2014-06-09 at 5.15.33 PM

Here is what makes PetBox unique, compared to other monthly doggie boxes:

All products are made in the US

- Toys and treats are customized by dog or cat size

- When you order a PetBox, it ships within 2 business days

- For every purchase, the company feeds rescue animals with the help of a new partner called Bogo Bowl

Kurgo barrier and safety harness (doggie seat belt)  http://www.kurgostore.com/barriers-and-containment/

Keep Fido in her place

Cici loves to jump into the driver’s seat when I run into the store. I come back to find you-know-who drooling on the steering wheel and getting the front seat all hairy.

Here is where the Backseat Barrier™ comes in. Super stylish, this cloth barrier attaches to the back of your front seats, creating a soft wall between you and Fido…blocking that little space above your center console. She can still sit and peer through the mesh top; you can even reach back for a scratch if necessary. Most importantly, this barrier helps to keep you distraction free while driving, and keeps your pup safely out of the front of the car.

if I had a small dog, I would bring this to carry my dog in:

Pet friendly Aquariums

while waiting to watch Shark Tank, I moseyed over to Animal Planet and Tanked was on. Hadn’t watched an episode in awhile so I checked it out. And guess what, they were doing a dog house aquarium for a vet in Vegas. Cool. Except I fell asleep and missed it.

Good thing that they played the episode again. And this time I was wide awake and watched it. Very cool aquarium for dogs, with a treat dispenser, too.  Dogs like to watch fish swim and try to catch them through the glass. The glass gets scratched but it has some kind of film on there so they can keep it fresh and unscratched. I imagine Cici would LOVE an aquarium like this. Keep her busy stalking the fish. Just do not know how I would make one and am sure that the Tanked guys are not going to make me a cheap one. Oh well. what do you think ? Would your doggies and cats like to have a house aquarium like this ???

uaRECV5

So then I decided to google to see if there was an easy way to make an aquarium for your dog. Instead, I found out that some aquariums in cities actually are pet friendly. Check them out below.

If you are looking for something unusual to do for spring break, Easter or summer travel, you might want to include a trip to one of these places with the pooches. And you can always find  pet friendly hotels nearby to stay at with your pooch.

If you go, let us know and if you include a photo or two, and/or a funny or heartwarming story, you just might win a prize or two, right here in doggie city.

are aquariums pet friendly?  well it depends, some just allow service animals (Monterey Bay Aquarium) but this one in Key West is pet friendly, for dogs on leashes

Are you pet friendly?

Yes! Dogs are welcome anytime as long as they are on leashes. The aquarium reserves the right to request the removal of any animal displaying aggressive behavior or for excessive noise.

Dog Pies

In honor of Pi day, thought we’d give some pie recipes for dogs…the first one is good for Thanksgiving or any time of the year. Pumpkin is good for doggies.  There is some variety, so enjoy. If you make any, let us know how they turned out.

1239576_849269778423626_283175518_n

Mini Pumpkin Pies

Ingredients:

  • 16 oz. can of pumpkin (plain)
  • 8 oz. plain low-fat yogurt
  • 3/4 cup whole wheat flour, or a mixture of all-purpose and whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup oatmeal
  • 1/4 cup applesauce, unsweetened
  • 3 – 4 Tbsp. water

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375
  2. Mix oatmeal and flour together in a food processor.
  3. Add applesauce slowly, continuing to run the processor.
  4. Add water slowly, using only enough to make a ball (too much will make the dough sticky).
  5. Spray wax paper and muffin tin with olive or vegetable oil cooking spray.
  6. Roll out dough onto wax paper and cut out 8 circles, about 4″ across (or divide dough into 8 small balls before rolling out).
  7. Press individual circles into bottom and sides of muffin tin.
  8. Bake for 8 minutes.
  9. Let crusts cool, then remove from the muffin tin.
  10. Fill each crust with about 1/4 cup (2 ounces) of canned pumpkin.
  11. Top with a dollop of yogurt.

Sweet Potato Pie for dogs

You can make the sweet potato or pumpkin puree blend anyway you want. If your pie filling recipe calls for milk, a good substitute is coconut milk. Coconut oil does the job of the butter and is safe and very healthy for most animals. A touch of cinnamon is a healthy spice as well that is enticing for dogs to throw into the mix. A little honey can provide more flavor in the mix if desired and approved for your pet. Sweet potato pie filling may also be combined with pumpkin puree. Sweet potatoes can be given to animals raw, boiled, or in the form of a full pie. It might sound intimidating and time consuming, but it’s actually rather simple.

Crust

Typical pie crust is not healthy for dogs, but a crust made with coconut flour (as opposed to grain-based crusts) can actually be a fun way to cook for your pets and give them added nutrition. Coconut flour is high in fiber and does not raise blood sugar levels, optimizes gastrointestinal health, and is gluten free.

To get the right size (if you want a smaller pie) and desired texture may require some experimentation, but the good news is that pets tend not to be too discriminative. You simply need something to place the soft sweet potato (or pumpkin) mix on. Simply add wet ingredients until your dough is moldable, and not too loose.

Here’s a good starting point (adjust as needed):

Ingredients for Pet Safe Pie Crust

  • 2 tablespoons Virgin Coconut Oil
  • 1 cup Coconut Flour
  • 3 Eggs (for carnivores and omnivores), or ice water/fruit juice/coconut milk)
  • 1 tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar (if you have it), (Apple Cider Vinegar is very healthy)
  • 1/2 cup Shredded coconut, (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon Honey, (optional, not for young animals)

could make a Sloppy Joe’s type Shepherd’s pie for dogs

with one pound of ground beef or turkey

a can of tomato sauce

1 cup of chopped veggies, celery, carrots

mashed potatoes with cheese

burger buns or pie  crust

Cook up the meat with the veggies and sauce. Make the mashed potatoes and cover the meat with the mashies. Serve on burger buns or bake in oven in pie crust.

1/2 cup Peas (cooked and mashed)

Quiche for dogs

CRUST
Mashed potatoes (try to save some before you add all the butter and salt – or make them fresh for your tarts!)
1 egg
Pinch garlic powder
Olive oil

FILLING
5 eggs
½ cup milk
2 cups “stuff”
• We use lean ham, chicken, turkey, salmon or steak, along with bell peppers, broccoli, spinach, asparagus, sundried tomatoes – whatever you have in the fridge that is tasty and dog friendly. Remember, you should never feed onions to your dogs, so leave those out.
1 tsp. finely chopped fresh herbs
• We like parsley (great with ham or steak) , basil (yummy with chicken or turkey) or dill (totally delicious with salmon)
1 cup, shredded cheese

Preheat oven to 350F.
In a medium bowl, mix together mashed potato, egg and garlic powder. Brush a tart pan with olive oil. Press mashed potato mixture into the pan, making sure it is as even a thickness as possible. Brush with olive oil. Place in oven and bake for 20 – 30 minutes or until lightly brown.

While the crust is baking, finely chop your “stuff” and set it aside. In a bowl, whip together the egg and milk. Once crust has baked, fill the tarts with your “stuff” and fresh herbs. Pour egg mixture into the tarts and top with cheese.
Bake for 25 minutes or until the tops have “puffed” slightly and the cheese is golden brown.
Your dogs will be begging for a bite – and you don’t have to feel bad about giving it to them

Yummy Valentines Day gifts

If you love your dog(s) and want to give them a bunch of fantastic (and healthy all natural, too) treats this Valentine’s Day, all of these (below) scored OFF THE CHARTS on Cici’s YUMMY Drooly Delicious chart. Five paws up !!!!

Due to the winter snow, Cici was not able to taste test the NEW Old Mother Hubbard treats, but she LOVED their other ones, and this survey is just too cute. Plus, OMH is offering giveaways that you can win, if you go to on their Facebook page February 8 through 14.

Gourmet Goodies Valentine’s Survey  Counts the Ways People Prefer Pooches Over Partners

Men may be from Mars and women from Venus, but they do agree on “Pluto”—how much they love their dogs. Old Mother Hubbard, in honor of its newest line of bakery-inspired dog treats, Gourmet Goodies, conducted a Valentine’s Day “Puppy Love” survey, and it’s no contest—pooches reign supreme over human partners in this lighthearted look at who wins ‘top dog’ in true love. Gourmet Goodies surveyed 741 dog-owning adults in relationships to determine whether 10 key characteristics vary between human and canine relationships: love at first sight, faithfulness, friendship, unwavering devotion, protection from danger, being eager to please, always happy to see me, easygoing, always makes me feel good and doesn’t talk back or criticize.

  • K-9s a perfect 10:  Fifty-five percent of dog owners in a human relationship strongly agree or agree that all 10 characteristics described their relationship with their dog. Only 32 percent feel the same about their human partner.
  • Instant attraction:  Love at first sight strikes more often with dogs, with 78 percent saying they fell in love with their dogs at first glance, versus only 67 percent for human partners.
  • Doggone devotion: When it comes to unconditional love and being faithful and devoted for life, furry friends are the best. Ninety-three percent of dog owners believe their pooch “loves them without question,” as compared to their human partners at 85 percent. As for fidelity, dogs win paws down once again, as 91 percent voted in favor of the pups, versus 82 percent for their significant others.
  • Fido’s the biggest fan: Dogs rise to the top with their ability to unequivocally support their person. Eighty-four percent of dogs “Don’t talk back or criticize” as compared to 47 percent of humans; they are “eager to please” (84 percent vs. 66 percent); and humans appreciate their “willingness to go anywhere” (86 percent vs. 73 percent).
  • Throwing humans a bone: Alas, relationships haven’t entirely gone to the dogs. Men and women agree, 94 percent and 90 percent respectively, that their human partner slightly edges out Fido in the best friend category…but only by a nose (eight percent and four percent, respectively).

Given the affection humans lavish on their canine companions, it’s no surprise that 33 percent said they plan to buy their dogs Valentine’s Day gifts. And when it comes to selecting a gift, pet parents find that the way to their dogs’ hearts is through their tummies, with the majority of dog owners identifying a “special treat” as the Valentine’s Day gift of choice for their beloved bowser. “Dogs certainly are easy to please, but that’s what makes pet parents want to go the extra mile to give them something special,” said Chanda Leary-Coutu, marketing communications manager for Old Mother Hubbard. “With Gourmet Goodies, pet parents can let their dogs indulge in artisanal-quality treats that before could only be found in a pet boutique.” The Old Mother Hubbard Gourmet Goodies line delivers irresistible flavors made with natural ingredients pooches will love. With seven new options to choose from, every day can be a new canine culinary adventure. Old Mother Hubbard Gourmet Goodies are available in 6 oz. re-sealable packages for $5.99 (U.S.) in the following varieties:

  • Crispers: Crunchy, cheesy and savory, Crispers are available in Cheddar, Chicken & Rosemary and Parmesan, Bacon & Tomato.
  • Soft Bakes: Moist cookies come in three varieties — Peanut Butter & Carob, Applesauce Oatmeal and Carrot & Pumpkin.
  • Fruit’ins: Two delicious cookie and fruit layers are available in Honey, Oatmeal & Blueberries and Honey, Apple & Bacon.

In celebration of Valentine’s Day, from February 8 through 14, Old Mother Hubbard will be offering daily Gourmet Goodies giveaways on their Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/OMHpetsnacks, as well as highlighting “Puppy Love” survey statistics.

More Survey Results  Who gives better smooches, your pooch or your mate? And what about public displays of affection? The Gourmet Goodies “Puppy Love” survey found:

  • Maybe it’s doggie breath?:  Men are more affectionate to their human partners – 68 percent would rather smooch their mate than their pup, and 74 percent of men agree that their human partner gives better kisses than their four-legged friend.
  • Women want kiss quality & quantity:  Women, however, are more likely than men to believe their pooch gives the best smooch (24 percent versus 14 percent), which may lead to why women are twice as likely (26 percent versus 12 percent) to kiss their dog more often on a daily basis. But the majority of women (64 percent) do agree that their human partner gives “the best” kisses as compared to their four-legged “true loves.”
  • People vs. pup PDA: Men (58 percent) prefer to hug or kiss their human partner in public, whereas women are more equal opportunity about with whom they show their affection – 36 percent will kiss or hug their partner or their pup in public.

About the Survey Conducted via Toluna’s Online Omnibus, interviews were completed Jan. 10 – 14, 2014, among a sample of 741 adults who own a dog, and are in a relationship with a partner. The margin of error on this sample is +/- 3%.

The best chicken jerky treats, individually wrapped in oil with a  JUICY factor of 900 OFF THE CHARTS. I wanted to eat them !!!!!  But I let Cici enjoy them all to herself. What a dog mommy does for her fur kids, sheeesh… These strips were incredibly easy to break up into smaller pieces if you do not mind the greasy oil dribbling down your hands These treats are made in the USA, both meat source and processing, and is 100% human grade quality.

Pet Expo San Jose

So You Want to Travel to the Bay Area Pet Expo. Join the Club!

Think of the Bay Area Pet Expo and images come to mind: miles and miles of canine and feline and avian related tables filled with products galore, free product samples, contests, giveaways and happy dogs eating treats, wagging tails meeting other canines.

Before you attend this annual Santa Clara Fairground event (this year featuring Shorty Rossi and his pack of pit bulls), which takes place Saturday, January 11, from 10 am to 4 pm, here are some things to consider.

Get there early. There is no fee to attend but parking on the street fills up fast. Parking  is $8 and the lot is very busy.

Make sure that your pooch is able, willing and ready to attend an event with hundreds of strange canines, felines and people. I had to park Cici outside tied to a pole for five minutes while I ran around inside and she was not a happy camper. Neither was the alternative (bringing her inside where the noise and excitement of meeting so many people, canines and felines in an enclosed space was too much for her). She was and I was not prepared for the chaos of the event.
