Hare today: rabbits in the raw

If you live in the Monterey Bay area from Carmel to Pacific Grove, Marina to Gilroy, there is a rabbit farmer in Hollister who delivers raw ground rabbit food for dogs for FREE in the area with a minimum purchase of 10lbs..

He feeds them native grasses, each package is 2 lb. which can be fed to a 60 lb. dog for a week, approximately.

Cici has been scarfing up the raw rabbits. She loves it.  I try not to think about the bunnies. The 2 pound package lasts about a week, so five packages should last the month, if you mix the ground rabbit with kibble or Dr. Harvey’s as I do and feed twice a day. Longer, if your dog is smaller than Cici. She weighs about 53-60 pounds. She has stopped itching, too. No more allergies… allergies be gone dog food !

It is all natural raw dog food, ground rabbit with bone and organ meat included. It has NO preservatives, additives or antibiotics. It is all fresh and healthy. It comes frozen in 2lb packages. And it is very affordable. I did some research on other sites and found prices of $100 for 10 pounds of raw rabbit meat.  Feed your dogs rabbit tartare. Or you can cook the meat and feed your dog cooked rabbit. Either way, it is a nice change of pace (see health benefits below).

Rabbit Meat:  Is classified as poultry.  Like chicken or turkey but is extremely lean with more protein and significantly less fat.  But unlike the common proteins of chicken and turkey dogs and cats that are allergic to poultry can usually digest rabbit without allergy symptoms.  Other benefits of rabbit meat include the following:  there is no cholesterol found in rabbit meat making it a fantastic option for dogs that have a history of cardiac disease.  Rabbit meat contains fewer calories when comparing ounce per ounce of chicken, turkey, beef, and lamb making it a fantastic option for dogs needing to lose a few pounds without significantly cutting the portion size.  Rabbit meat is a very “heart-friendly” protein source, and makes a great choice for allergic, overweight or sensitive pets.

If you’re looking for a delicious grain-free treat for your pooch, follow a standard turkey meatball recipe and omit the breadcrumbs. Here is one of our grain-free personal favorites:

1 lb. ground turkey
1 egg
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. oregano
1 tsp. sweet basil
1 1/2 tsp. parsley
2 cloves minced garlic
1/4 cup romano or parmesan cheese

Mix all ingredients together and roll into small balls. Place shaped meatballs on a baking sheet and bake for 400 degrees for 20-25 minutes.

Pumpkin is good for dogs

      I made my own version of this pumpkin meat loaf with ground turkey for cici and she loved it…Healthy Digestion Pumpkin Meatloaf

      1.5 pounds lean ground beef
      1 cup mashed or unseasoned canned pumpkin
      1 egg
      2 TBSP plain active yogurt
      1 tsp aloe juice
      1 tsp extra virgin olive oil
      1 cup of finely chopped parsley
      1/2 cup peas
      1 cup finely chopped cooked greens, such as turnip greens
      1.5 cups rice infant cereal
      1 tsp seaweed/algae
      1 tsp calcium montmorillonite clay
      1 tsp paprika
      1/2 tsp cinnamon
      * Optional supplements

      Preheat oven: 350F
      Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl.
      Pack firmly into loaf pan greased with extra virgin olive oil.
      Bake for about 1.5 hours.
      Cool & slice.
      This meatloaf freezes very well in convenient, single-slice portions

      this sounds yummy and I think can be adapted for dogs, too…

      Pumpkin Whoopie pie

    • This Wicked Pumpkin Whoopie Pies recipe is adapted from the recipe printed on the 207 Show’s web site on WCSH6.com (the NBC TV affiliate in Portland, Maine). I have not changed the substance of the recipe, but I have revised the wording a bit for clarity and added some of my own helpful tips and notes in italics.
  • I have broken out this recipe into two parts — the pumpkin whoopie pie shells recipeand the cream cheese whoopie pie filling recipe — to make it easier to follow since the cake shells and filling are made separately and then sandwiched together.

Ingredients

  • 1 15 oz can of pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 cups brown sugar (firmly packed)
  • 2 tablespoons molasses
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour (heaping)

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350 °F (177 °C). Grease a large cookie sheet or line it with parchment paperand set it aside.

I always have needed two or more cookie sheets for mine, but it depends on the size of the scoops you use (which also determines the number of whoopie pies this recipe will make).2. Beat pumpkin, eggs, oil, and brown sugar together until fluffy with an electric mixer. Stir in the molasses.

A handheld mixer is fine.3. Combine the dry ingredients together and mix them into the pumpkin mixture until well blended. The batter will be thick (it should hold its shape when placed on the cookie sheet).

Make sure you measure 3 heaping cups of flour (approximately 3 1/2 level cups) and 2firmly packed cups of brown sugar so you get the correct amounts of each in the batter.

Also, feel free to use different spices if you prefer. For example, if you don’t care for ginger, you could substitute a smaller quantity of nutmeg.4. Scoop large, rounded spoonfuls of the cake batter onto the prepared cookie sheet(s), spacing them at least 2 inches apart.

Feel free to make your whoopie pie shells larger or smaller by changing the size of the mounds of batter. Remember to adjust the baking time accordingly and keep a close eye on the cakes so you don’t under- or over-bake them.

Both Amy and I recommend using an ice cream scoop to remove the same amount of cake batter for each whoopie pie shell and to form the batter into neat, uniform mounds. Using the ice cream scoop to portion and shape the batter helps you make cake shells that are uniformly sized with round edges that are easy to match up in pairs, rather than the unevenly sized shells with wonky edges that often form when anything other than a scoop is used.5. Bake the whoopie pie shells for 10-13 minutes (depending on the size scoop or spoon you used to portion the batter).

6. Cool the whoopie pie shells on a large wire cooling rack while you make the cream cheese filling with marshmallow creme / fluff (see recipe below).

7. When the whoopie pie shells have cooled, turn over half of them (flat side facing up) and place a scoop of cream cheese filling in the center of each cake shell. Top with the remaining cake shells.

Use the same ice cream scoop you used to portion out the cake batter to top half the cake shells with a mound of the cream cheese filling.

Ingredients

  • 6 oz. cream cheese
  • 1/2 stick (1/4 c.) unsalted butter (softened)
  • 2 cups confectioners sugar
  • 3 heaping tablespoons marshmallow creme (such as Marshallow Fluff)
  • 2 teaspoons water

Instructions

1. Place all ingredients in a mixing bowl and beat with an electric mixer until fluffy.

Note: 3 heaping tablespoons of marshmallow creme is equal to approximately 4 level tablespoons of fluff.2. Sandwich pairs of cooled pumpkin whoopie pie shells together with scoops of this cream cheese filing.

Pumpkin Bread Recipe

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 1/2 cups (200g) flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 cup (200 g) sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup (240 ml) pumpkin purée*
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) olive oil
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) chopped walnuts

* To make pumpkin purée, cut a pumpkin in half, scoop out the seeds and stringy stuff, lie face down on a foil or Silpat lined baking sheet. Bake at 350°F until soft, about 45 min to an hour. Cool, scoop out the flesh. Freeze whatever you don’t use for future use. Or, if you are working with pumpkin pieces, roast or boil them until tender, then remove and discard the skin.

METHOD

1 Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Sift together the flour, salt, sugar, and baking soda.

2 Mix the pumpkin, oil, eggs, 1/4 cup of water, and spices together, then combine with the dry ingredients, but do not mix too thoroughly. Stir in the nuts.

3 Pour into a well-buttered 9x5x3 inch loaf pan. Bake 50-60 minutes until a thin skewer poked in the very center of the loaf comes out clean. Turn out of the pan and let cool on a rack.

Can easily double the recipe.

Yield: Makes one loaf.

Pumpkin Peanut Butter Dog Treats
2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
2 large eggs
2/3 cup pumpkin purée, canned or fresh
3 tbsps peanut butter

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Place all ingredients in the mixing bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment. Mix on medium for about a minute or until the dough looks like a bunch of little dough balls. If you pinch a piece and it crumbles, add a little water. If it’s really sticky, it’s too wet and you’ll need to add a little flour. Gather the dough together and form into a ball. Place on a lightly floured work surface and roll it out to about 1/4-inch thickness. You can either use a cookie cutter to cut out cute shapes or use a knife to cut squares or strips. I am pretty sure the dog doesn’t care, but I rather prefer the cute shapes. I gather the scraps together and roll them out again and again until I’ve used up the dough. Place the cookies on a baking sheet. They can be crowded pretty close together since they don’t expand much. Bake 15-20 minutes for softer treats or 30 minutes for hard treats (Kaweah likes crunchy treats, just like her person – me). Let cool completely. Makes 100+ 1-inch heart-shaped dog treats.

Prayers for Wallace and Angus

Hector the pit bull’s much beloved brothers are having serious health challenges… please pray for them all and the entire Yori family…

Wallace has hemangiosarcoma, an aggressive cancer.  his best friend Angus tore his cruciate ligament.

Send stuffies or treats.  Wallace loves to destroy stuffed toys, with or without squeakers (they will be destroyed immediately so don’t bother purchasing expensive ones).  Treats must be grain-free and poultry-free.  Good brands for him are ZiwiPeak, Raw Bistro Stix,Wellness Pure Rewards (venison/salmon), Pure Vita (beef liver/sweet potato).  No chews except for Zukes Z-Bones (he hardly has any teeth left).  You can send them to him at 4712 19th St SE, Rochester, MN 55904.

Continue to send him positivity and love.  Say prayers, wish him healing light, reiki, good thoughts… I believe all of that good energy is good for him.

Clara is currently doing a painting of Wallace and will be selling prints online to help with his medical bills.  Those should be ready next week if you are interested.

Hug your pets and be glad for every moment you have with them.  Their lives are too short and they deserve every ounce of goodness possible.

This is Wallace on his 10th birthday this year. He knows how to live life to the fullest and we want to help him do that for as long as he wants to.

Books have gone to the dogs

There’s a wide world of dog books to explore… here are a few very different ones…  each make great gifts for animal lovers.

Fistful of Collars, 5th in the Spencer Quinn series, with Chet the dog narrator/sleuth… Chet and Bernie the dynamic duo of the Little Detective Agency encounter a cat, Hollywood and are off on another funny action adventure. Hollywood has gone to the dogs and Chet and Bernie’s new assignment is a self-proclaimed cat person, and his feline friend Brando has taken an instant dislike to Chet. And a fun tale ensues.

We drove deeper into the desert, Bernie at the wheel, Thad riding shotgun with Brando on his lap, me still in back. After not too long, Bernie turned off the blacktop and followed a dirt track up toward some big red rocks, a track that petered out before we got there. Bernie stopped the car.

“What’s going on?” Thad said.

“Want to see something interesting?” Bernie said.

“Like what?” Thad checked his watch.

“Let’s make it a surprise.”

“I hate surprises.”

Bernie smiled, one of those smiles of his that’s just for himself—and me, of course, goes without saying—and we all piled out of the car, me hitting the ground first. We walked up toward the red rocks, me in the lead, then Bernie, Thad, and Brando, actually moving under his own power. Once—this was back on our trip to San Diego—Bernie said that the fog came in on little cat feet, a remark that I’d never been able to forget no matter how hard I’d tried, and that was how Brando moved along, like he was made of cloud, weighing nothing, although in fact he looked pudgy to me.

Suzann Yue’s Snort’s Special Gift is a very special book, one that transcends the death of a family pet and shows young ones the possibilities of life after death. Based upon the author’s family and their dog, Snort, with whom they all had a  good time, I must admit that I was touched reading the author’s daughter’s class essay on her best friend, Snort, after he had died. Apparently good writing skills run in the family!  Lin Wang’s nicely flowing watercolors add real depth and meaning to the poignant words of both the author and her daughter. I think that they were the real reason that my tears flowed so copiously.
Winner of a Mom’s Choice Award, this is a book to be treasured. The last page even includes a place to which you can affix your own personal pet photograph, along with suggested inscriptions.
Snort’s Gift, the only thing is the story started at the ending… there was no beginning or middle, so readers don’t really get to know the dog or family. How/when did they get the dog? how old was the dog? happy memories ? funny quirks of the dog?  Would have liked more info, specific details to fill in this important story.

Dr. Harvey and I just had a conversation about this topic. I had told him that Cici was not wanting to eat her soup (raw dehydrated food) and I asked for his advice. He said over and over that it is best to make your own food, that way you know what your pet is eating.

Cici and i are exploring new foods and supplements in order to get well…

I’ve known about the Garden of Life products for a few years now but never tried them. But I finally took the plunge with the new Raw Probiotics for Women and Raw Super Green Food…

I don’t eat anywhere near enough raw fruits and veggies in my diet so that is changing and the Super Green Food helps.

Have also been taking Tibetan Herbs and Burdock and Chlorella in terms of supplements.

All are helpful in different ways, including detox and internal cleansing.

After reading about different raw food diets and having done juicing in the past, am also incorporating more raw foods into my diet. Along this path, have recently tried some new foods I’ve never eaten before… kelp noodles, kale chips, cacao bliss (similar to coco loco), and seaweed snacks. I finally found some raw goat’s milk, love it and Cici is slurping it up too. And got some young coconuts, drank the water and am eating the raw coconut. There is a product called coconut cream that is recommended but it is very costly. Most of the products mentioned above are expensive, too but I am sick of feeling sick and tired.

been teasing my roommates about getting chickens (for fresh eggs) and a goat. Will soon write a post about a lady I met in the area who has free range chickens (for eggs), a dog, a cat and an organic garden. After the fiasco with the fence, and other reasons, am not really going to get chickens but I sure would like to find some fresh ones (the lady I met just has enough for her family).  Huge difference in the taste and nutrients between farm fresh free range eggs and storebought.

The winner: Goat’s milk
When Spanish researchers compared cow’s and goat’s milk from animals raised under similar conditions, they found that both have the same amount of essential amino acids needed to repair and build muscle. But goat’s milk contains a larger percentage of omega-3 fats, as well as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and conjugated linoleic acid (or CLA). Studies suggest CLA has a number of effects, including lowering cancer risk, improving bone health, and helping reduce body fat.

HEALTHY CHOICE: Use tangy, slightly sweet goat’s milk (found at health-food stores) the same way as cow’s milk-on cereal, in smoothies, and when baking.

I might add a dollop of yogurt or apple sauce

1. Preheat oven to 350.

2. In mixer, cream peanut butter and sugar. Add everything else and mix until well combined.

3. With your hands, roll the mixture into little balls (they stay together better if you keep them small)and place on a parchment lined baking sheet. You could roll them in additional sugar.

4. Bake for about 10 minutes. Cookies should still be soft when you take them out of the oven. Let them sit for a few minutes before you take them off the baking sheet.

Makes 4 to 5 dozen treats.

Ingredients
2 Chicken breasts, cut in half
4 slices Bacon
4 ounces (8 tablespoons) Cream Cheese
4 tablespoons Butter

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees fahrenheit.
2. Pound chicken breasts until they are approximity 1/2 inches thick.
3. Spread 2 tablespoons of cream cheese on each chicken breasts and tops with 1 tablespoon of butter.
4. Wrap in a slice of bacon and secure with a toothpick.
5. Bake uncovered for 40 to 45 minutes,  juices run clear when chicken is pierced.
6. Remove toothpicks and slice to serve.

You could probably substitute turkey or chicken franks for the chicken…

Peanut Butter and Cheese Dog Treats

1 cup flour
½ cup milk
2 Tbs peanut butter
2 Tbs grated parmesan cheese
1 tsp baking powder
1 egg white
1 Tbs chicken broth

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350° F (180° C).

Mix flour and milk until lumpy. Add Peanut butter and chicken broth. Mix parmesan cheese with first four ingredients. Add egg white. Mix well or until it has the consistency of pancake batter. Add baking powder. Pour onto cookie sheet sprayed with nonstick spray, in 3-inch diameter blobs. Cook until golden brown.

Serve cool.

Gingerbread Biscotti

Ingredients
2 cups Whole Wheat Flour
1/2 teaspoon Baking Powder
1 teaspoon Ginger
1/2 teaspoon Nutmeg

3/4 Cup Milk
1 cup Yogurt Chips or/and Carob Chips

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
2. Combine dry ingredients and stir until well mixed. Add molasses and milk to dry mix and knead until all ingredients are well mixed.
3. Form dough into flat logs about 6 inches wide and 1 inch high. Bake on prepared baking sheet for 15 to 20 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes then cut logs into 1 inch slices.
4. Place slices on greased cookie sheet and bake for 15 to 20 minutes until the slices are as dry and crunchy. Allow to cool.
5. Once cooled melt yogurt chips and dip biscotti until end is coated. Allow to harden and refrigerate.
Makes 1 to 2 dozen biscotti.

1 Orange, juiced
1/4 teaspoon Nutmeg

3. Knead dough into ball and roll onto a floured surface 1/4 inch thick. Cut with the cookie cutter of your choice.
4. Use a fork to poke holes in the top of the biscuits.
5. Place on your prepared cookie sheet and bake for 10 to 15 minutes. Cool and refrigerate.
Makes 3 dozen Bones.

Doggie Egg Nog!

1 container plain low fat, organic yogurt
1 jar of organic baby food (seasonal veggies and meat is our favorite), or you can make your own by adding some boiled unseasoned chicken, carrots, green beans, a little yam or plain pumpkin to your food processor and blend smooth).
1 free range egg
1 1/2 cups filtered water

Blend all ingredients and serve in stainless steel bowls with a sprinkling of ground flax seed, and top with a nice banana slice. Be sure and refrigerate unused portions.

NO NUTMEG FOR DOGS!

NOTE: You may like a dash of Nutmeg atop your egg nog, but it should never be given to your dog. High levels of nutmeg can be quite dangerous for dogs. Symptoms of ingestion include seizures, tremors, central nervous system problems, and possible death.

Occupy the Shelters!!!

I LOVE the Adoption Centers model… and had an idea last night… Imagine, what if there were Adoption Centers and housing for both people and pets… homeless people would have decent housing, NOT a shelter where they have NO privacy nor dignity, a job to do, get a pet ready to be adopted, gardening (grow food), adoption center jobs and more… Imagine the miracles for both pets and people… Americans Need Jobs. Americans LOVE animals.

Homeless vets, seniors, all kinds of people could become well again through the power of LOVE… pets make wonderful companions… Both the pets and people and communities would benefit.  Similar to the Pit Bulls and Parolees concept at Villa Lobos… except I see smaller houses, maybe 5 or 6 bedrooms, and/or manufactured homes on land with Adoption Centers similar to Doggie Daycare Centers plus the Rehab Centers… Win win win win win win win…

And what if these Adoption Center places also fed the pets THE BEST PET FOODS, not the cheapest, fed the community pets with the best nutrition, the Rehab Centers could have Holistic Vets on board, there could be a doggie gym for agility, a Doggie Spa, a Shop to buy goodies to support the Adoption Center, a doggie pool, and more… No more doggie discrimination. No more pit bulls being put to sleep for how they look and/or because they are pit bulls.

Dreaming… Instead of coming from a mental / emotional place of Scarcity and we have to accept whatever is donated, shabby, crappy and poor mentality, this is revolutionary in concept and scope… a whole different way of THINKING and IMPLEMENTING… Something, places to BE PROUD OF, Places of Dignity and Health and Well Being for People and Pets… Imagine…

IT is TIME to CHANGE the status quo killing factories shelters into an Adoption Centers model…

Get rid of the Greed… and Hate… Eliminate the Greed and Hate…

That means WE have to change too… Not just Point Fingers and Blame, Accuse and Make Wrong… you cannot change something via hate… only LOVE makes a difference… honey works with bees,vinegar not so much… does not mean to sugarcoat, but learn compassion, forgiveness, and LISTEN…

I do NOT understand why someone would rather kill animals than find homes for them and save lives… AND I also know that when accusations are thrown at them, people resist, shut their ears, get defensive, run away, shut down…

There has to be a Win Win Win for ALL…

Am reminded of John Robbins, heir to the Baskin Robbins fortune, years ago he walked away from his family. And he had a dream about a cow. He writes about this in Diet for a New America. And what impressed me so much is how he got to go to factory farms for three whole months. He visited these horrible places where they not only slaughter animals but keep them in horrendous conditions. And he was there with an OPEN HEART and just Listened to the people who worked there. Somehow he was able to do that. Listen with an Open Compassionate Heart although he was repelled by what the people DID every day to the animals. Read the book, Get Inspired and Find Creative Solutions.

Create a Vision of the Adoption Centers you want and Make it Happen/Implement Step by Step by Step… Until It is Done… Manifest…

RIP Ace, this type of “accident”, killing the wrong homeless animal, or someone’s pet happens every day in every state in this country. Until we replace killing shelters with true Adoption Centers, where animals live happily in a healthy, cage free, communal environment and be socialized to prepare them for their new furrever homes. We can SAVE THEM ALL, not just 90% !
