now on to the pit bull side…

first, the good news…

Now, the not so good news, a”vicious” pit bull KTLA banned from the show.

email: sarah.grooters@ktla.com, Nancy.Cruz@ktla.com

Yesterday morning, Sally was scheduled to be on KTLA, a local news station in Los Angeles, with two adoptable dogs, Gideon and Franklyn (see Franklyn’s video)

Franklyn’s foster lives an hour away and arrived early to be there.

Prior to the day, the producers of the show asked for descriptions of the dogs and were given them.

When they arrived, one of the show producers came out, looked at Franklyn (who was busy kissing a human admirer) and said, “Oh no. We have an anti Pit-Bull policy.”

I calmly told her that we were not informed of this, and had we been, we would have cancelled our appearance as breed discrimination is not something I tolerate, and more so, is against public policy.*

She stated that I could go on with Gideon but not Franklyn. I told her that if Franklyn was not allowed, I was leaving as well, so she went in to talk to another show producer. 30 minutes later in the freezing cold, she came outside to say that they would not allow Franklyn on the air. I explained that this is also a violation of law and that they would have to find something else to fill the spot since there is no way I would support or be in a show that discriminates.

Gideon, Franklyn, and his foster Sally then left.

* California Food & Ag code Section 31683 states, in relevant part: “Except as provided in Section 122331 of the Health and Safety Code, no program regulating any dog shall be specific as to breed.”

JOIN ME IN TELLING KTLA THAT YOU WILL NOT SUPPORT BREED DISCRIMINATION.  KTLA can use some education about pit bulls and could do a show about pit bulls. Be polite and professional. Thanks.

Pit Bull Paparrazzi

There are pro pit bull lovers and those against. Unfortunately for innocent dogs like Lennox and Wicca and too many more dogs, some of the folks who hate pit bulls and/or are afraid of them do not know what they are talking about but have a public platform to express their opinions pretending to be facts (newspaper editors and reporters). Everyone is entitled to their opinion AND when they state opinions as if they are FACTS it is misleading and causes mass hysteria which leads to abuse and death to innocent dogs. It’s just that plain and simple.

As a newspaper reporter and editor, I know that “whatever bleeds leads” and headline stories. Most people know that is because scary stories (as well as sex scandals) sell newspapers.  Karen Delise in The Pit Bull Placebo effectively outlines the media’s role in shaping people’s perceptions of dogs as well as known factors that produce ‘dangerous dogs’.  Many people do not know, recognize or print these factors in newspapers and magazines. What they too often do is perpetuate myths (locking jaw, unpredictable dogs, born to maul and other such FICTION). To some, truth may be in the eye of the reader but OBJECTIVE FACTS are not the same as opinions nor myths. Objective facts are credible and are backed up by experts and studies whereas myths are refuted and opinions are anyone’s thoughts or beliefs which cannot be substantiated. Gravity is FACT while the moon is made of swiss cheese is a myth.

My personal observation of these anti pit bull CRAZIES are that they are mad, angry, fearful people who bash dogs and sane loving people for the sake of THEIR OWN ISSUES. Instead of dealing with their own STUFF, they project onto dogs what is INSIDE of themselves.

When Mother Teresa was once asked why she dedicated her life to the poor and needy of Calcutta, she is said to have replied: ”Because I realized that I had a Hitler within me and decided to turn around and do good.”

Barbara Kay and the other anti pit bull spreaders of lies, myths and fiction would do well to heed that sage advice.

From Karen Delise’s Pit Bull Placebo,  The Pit Bull Paparrazzi traffic in myths and pseudoscience.

“In 1987, over 800 newspaper articles were printed in which “Pit bulls” were headlined.

Over a decade later, the media is unrelenting:

• 2004, over 900 newspaper articles were printed in which “Pit bulls” were in the headline.

• In 2005, there were an incredible 1,700+ newspaper articles which headlined the words, “Pit bull.”

• In 2006, the media continues to exploit the Pit bull with an unprecedented 2,800+ newspaper articles vying for their readers’ attention with the words “Pit bull” in the headlines.”

A recent case of anti pit bull hate mongering was published in the National Post, a Canadian newspaper (that appears to be of the same ilk as the New York Post known for its scandalous headlines and articles filled with myths) with a blaring headline about how (ALL) Pit Bulls are Bred to Maul (people and should be banned/killed).

Anyone who knows breed history knows that true fighting dogs do not show any aggression towards humans whatsoever. Human aggression was in fact considered a major fault, so if a dog showed any human aggression it would be destroyed and the line would not be bred from anymore. Handlers were in the pit with the dogs during a fight and would not be so if they thought there was any danger.

So if it said Pit Bulls are Bred to Give Kisses to People While Shopping at the Mall, I would agree. Because pit bulls LOVE to lick, live to lick… Cici barked at a couple the other day because they walked by her without saying hello to her, the nerve. She LOVES people as do her canine brethren. They were bred to LOVE people. And cannot hold their Licker. Sometimes she will spend 20 minutes licking me. One time, I saw her lick another dog at a dog park for at least an hour. Pit Bulls are Bred to Lick. Yes, they are. This clerk at Trader Joe’s and I were talking about our dogs the other day. She has a German Shepherd she said who is a love bug but very protective of her. Hah, I said, well, my dog has to wag her tail and say hello to EVERYONE and show them her belly. The mailmen, UPS, FedEx, anyone who comes to the door, people that walk by her at the park down the street. She is very gentle with kids, LOVES men and people in wheelchairs. A few times lately, she sat nicely waiting for people to come over and say hello and/or give her a treat. I did not train her to do any of this. She came this way. I would not know how to train her to do this. She was born to LOVE. She waits patiently outside my roommate’s door in the morning so she can say hello to him and show him her belly. Every morning. She was born this way.

Barbara Kay says:

Fact: When it comes to dog bites, it very often is the breed. Each year, about one PB in 100,000 kills someone, compared with one non-PB in about 10 million. About one adopted PB in 30,000 kills or disfigures someone after passing behavioral screening. (Other dangerous breeds, like Rottweilers and Huskies do plenty of damage too; more on them another time).”

http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2012/08/01/barbara-kay-on-ontarios-pit-bull-ban-pit-bulls-are-bred-to-maul/

I refute her so-called opinions pretending to be facts with these actual FACTS…

There are no incidents to date of a spayed/neutered indoor family pit bull ever having killed anyone.

…[S]ince 1975, dogs belonging to more than 30 breeds have been responsible for fatal attacks on people, including Dachshunds, a Yorkshire Terrier, and a Labrador Retriever.” (It’s also key to point out that you are more likely to be killed by lightening than a dog, and dog bites are at historic lows.)

http://stubbydog.org/2012/05/pit-bulls-by-the-numbers/

But she is just demonizing dogs for the sake of entertainment and to keep dogs banned. I wrote to the opinionator Barbara Kay to refute her hysteria derived opinions disguised as facts (all unsubstantiated of course but she has her refuted sources)… to let her know that I did not appreciate that articles like hers are the reason millions of innocent dogs are killed, abused and attacked.

What I received in return was insults and name calling… First, she called Karen Delise a nut case. Then she called me a nazi. And finally, said that she has noticed that all pit bull owners/lovers have lower IQ’s than normal people. This was in response to my Stated and Linked FACTS.

Really… well, when you have NO Defense for your outrageous LIES and MYTHS, then what else can you do but attack by calling people names and insult them and then say it is not personal?

According to Barbara KKK (the Queen of the Kill K9s Koalition), it is also pit bulls fault because too many dogs are in shelters and get killed. Hello. A majority of the dogs in shelters ARE pit bulls and get killed because they ARE pit bull types/mixes.

Kay states:

According to Merritt Clifton, for decades a statistics-driven investigative reporter in this field, PBs accounted for 930,000 shelter killings in 2011, 60% of the U.S. total, even though they represent 3.3% of the dog population. PBs also account for 51% of dogs impounded for attacking other animals. Each year, from 33% to 45% of the total U.S. PB population enters an animal shelter, “a phenomenon never seen with any other dog breed.” Clifton says there are few accidental PB births, “because nothing resembling a pit bull occurs in nature.”

WHAT???

“First, Clifton’s statistics incorporate “press accounts” of dog attacks which are notoriously inaccurate.  The press is in no way qualified to make breed determinations, nor are Animal Control, veterinarians, or law enforcement.  In addition, with the press calling any and all dogs that can pass for a “pit bull” a “pit bull” (which is a type, not a breed), what will victims of dog attacks and witnesses most likely say the “breed” in question was?  And as Clifton himself notes, his statistics are “by no means a complete list of fatal and otherwise serious dog attacks,” which means that there is little one could accurately conclude from Clifton’s “statistics.”

http://www.nopitbullbans.com/debunking-merritt-clifton/

Then Kay goes on,

“Denialists all quote each other’s baseless statements in an endless loop, and parrot the same Manchurian-candidates mantras: “My PB may lick you to death”; “all dogs bite”; “It’s the owner, not the breed”; “the pit bull was the most popular family pet in America.”

These are all myths. Dog-sales statistics show that PBs were never that popular in America; and they were never bred for anything but fighting.”

Apparently, she never heard of Petey the Little Rascal Dog. And Stubby. And so many other famous pit bulls.  Nor has she ever heard facts stated by world renowned dog experts and dog trainers such as Victoria Stilwell, Cesar Millan, Justin Silver and Jim Crosby who have and/or have worked with pit bulls, fearful and dangerous dogs for YEARS. Victoria and Cesar offered to rehome both Lennox and Wicca at their own expense. And Jim Crosby works with truly dangerous dogs every day and has for the past 25 years.

“Let’s look at the “qualifications” of the only evaluation that the BCC or Court accepted.  The BCC “evaluator” is, admittedly, a former police Constable.  So am I, except that instead of being a Constable, the equivalent here in the US to a base Patrolman, I retired as a Lieutenant and Watch Commander, the UK equivalent of a full Inspector with the Metropolitan Police.  I am also a certified Behavior Consultant (he has no such training), have been certified as a Professional Dog Trainer, and am trained and certified as a behavior evaluator by several organizations-and he is not.  I have further, over the years, worked with, trained, and evaluated what are probably over a thousand Pit Bulls and other breeds prohibited in the UK, certainly more than the BCC evaluator.

“…And frankly, if their evaluator thinks that Lennox was the “most dangerous dog” he had ever seen,-please come meet some of the guys I have handled and evaluated after they have killed humans.  I have seen more dangerous Cocker Spaniels.”

http://canineaggression.blogspot.com/2012/07/lennox-gloves-come-off.html

In regards to Wicca, accused in Montreal of two bite incidents, Crosby said:

“Jim Crosby, retired police lieutenant and canine dog bite investigator from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office in Jacksonville, Florida, who has invaluable experience with dangerous dog issues, has contacted the shelter and city officials on Thursday to offer his assistance. http://www.northcountrygazette.org/2011/10/24/the_wrong_way/

“Crosby says he finds it hard to believe they want to kill this dog over what, even if it WAS a bite has to be rated minor- what I would term a low Level 3 incident on the Dunbar bite assessment scale-and based on the one photo I am not persuaded it was caused by teeth.”

http://www.northcountrygazette.org/2012/07/26/death_order/

Wicca saved her owner’s life, was far from a vicious dog and was killed by the city of Montreal because she was a pit bull.

“Pit bulls were the dog of choice for famous personages such as Helen Keller, Laura Ingalls Wilder (of Little House on the Prairie fame), and President Theodore Roosevelt.

Meanwhile, pit bulls were chosen as mascots by the Buster Brown shoe company and by the United States itself, which featured pit bulls on American propaganda posters for each of the first two world wars.

“Fittingly, the first dog decorated with medals by the armed forces was one Sgt. Stubby. In the first world war, Sgt. Stubby not only survived being twice wounded in combat, but captured a German spy and saved his entire platoon from a poison gas attack.

“In 1903, an American Pit Bull Terrier named Bud became the first dog to travel across the entire US via car. He accompanied the first humans to make a non-stop journey cross country by automobile, but his fame eclipsed theirs, as newspapers in cities across America featured a goggle-wearing Bud.”

http://www.pitbulls.org/article/brief-history-american-pit-bull-terrier

Delise, “…for over half a century in between, 1920 to 1970, millions of Bulldogs, Bull Terriers, American Pit Bull Terriers,  American Staffordshire Terriers and all their mixed breed cousins served Americans well in every possible capacity and circumstance.

Kay goes on…

“All dogs bite, but few do serious damage on a statistically consistent basis. Some PBs may lick you; others may maul you. Nobody can predict their behaviour — not even celebrated dog whisperer César Milan, as a recent YouTubed episode rather horrifyingly demonstrated. The fact is, even responsible owners cannot prevent PB attacks. Most killer PBs were raised in loving homes and seemed sweet — until they attacked.”

What Cesar Millan says about BSL :

http://bydogpeople.com/2011/07/11/cesar-millan-pit-bull-ban/

She reiterates the myth that pit bulls are unpredictable and more likely to bite people than other dogs.

That is fiction. There are known factors that contribute to dogs of all breeds biting. If the dog is male, not neutered, kept chained or roams loose in a pack, these are ALL known factors in dog bites/attacks. Dogs of ALL breeds. Also a female dog usually chained with a litter of newborn puppies, guard dogs, abused dogs, sick dogs, neglected dogs, starved dogs and unsocialized dogs.

And all dogs, before they do bite, gives warning signs.

Dogs who are the top biters are daschunds.

Pit bulls bite harder than other dogs. When Dr. Brady Barr did a comparative bite-pressure study among pits, German shepherds and Rottweiler for National Geographic, pits came in last.

And Pits will “turn’’ on you because they’re hard-wired to kill. The former Vick dogs disprove that.

Back to Kay’s fantasies disguised as facts.

“Semyonova says, “There is no temperament test or behaviour test that can predict or assure that a pit bull won’t suddenly do what it was bred to do.” PB “impulsive aggression” is a genetically carried trait and strongly heritable. By seven months, those cuddly pups usually start attacking other animals without provocation. Small children are at particular risk for harm because they are easy prey.”

NO dog of ANY BREED should EVER be left alone with a child. NEVER EVER.

And this assertion has been PROVEN INCORRECT.

“Yes, abused, starved, endlessly-chained or desperately cornered dogs of other breeds will fight, but not to the death like PBs. Once PBs attack (without warning, unlike other breeds), with their characteristic grab-and-shake death lock, they are so pain-insensitive they are almost impossible to dislodge.”

Semyonova’s book claims that the pit bull has a chemical imbalance in its brain that causes it to “snap”,  a different chemical make up in the brain says Semyonova, however, doesn’t she does NOT cite ANY sources proving this. No names of researches, no date of research, no nothing.

There’s no scientific data to back that up. They’ve actually studied pit bulls and found that the pit bull skull is no different than any other dog. There’s no locking mechanism. Just as there is no chemical imbalance causing them to snap.

Dr. Lehr Brisbin of the University of Georgia wrote:

“The few studies which have been conducted of the structure of the skulls, mandibles and teeth of pit bulls show that, in proportion to their size, their jaw structure and thus its inferred functional morphology, is no different than that of any breed of dog. There is absolutely no evidence for the existence of any kind of “locking mechanism” unique to the structure of the jaw and/or teeth of the American Pit Bull Terrier.”

More creative fiction from Kay, as she cites Clifton’s fantasy stats.

Here are the true facts:

Dog attacks: 33    …(and just 15 in 2011)

With a US population of 311,591,917 (July 2011) and that year’s 15 dog attack fatalities, your chances of dying in a dog attack (from all breeds combined) is 1 in 20,772,794….almost 21 MILLION! One in over *30 MILLION* from a Pit-Bull or Pit-Mix.

https://www.facebook.com/notes/john-w-rosa/pit-bull-attacks-you-may-as-well-plan-to-retire-on-lottery-winnings/467491906604123

Then Kay says, “Bans work.”

well, no, they do not work in the real world.

BSL does not eliminate dog bite incidents…

http://nationalcanineresearchcouncil.com/media-center/

Dog-bite related fatalities are so extremely rare that not even a state could ban enough dogs to insure that they had prevented even one. (Consider: in Denver, Colorado, after they banned pit bull dogs in 1989, they had another dog bite related fatality in the Denver area, involving another type of dog.)

Spain, Italy, Great Britain and the Netherlands have all reported that their breed specific regulations have not produced a reduction in dog bite incidents. The Toronto Humane Society surveyed health departments throughout the province of Ontario, and reported that the breed ban enacted in 2005 had not produced a reduction in dog bites. In Winnipeg, Manitoba, after the city banned one type of dog, dog bites actually rose, just involving other types of dogs. Reports from Denver, Colorado, Miami-Dade, Florida, Prince George’s County, Maryland, and Omaha, Nebraska all tell the same story.

After a few exchanges with her, it became clear to me that Kay writes the trash she calls objective journalism, fair and balanced, my dog’s rear end, so that she can fight with sane people and call them names.  How mature and professional, NOT.

Apparently Kay bases her opinions pretending to be facts on these type of statistics which are stats based upon news media headlines NOT real dog bite statistics

http://bslnews.org/2012/01/24/the-real-dog-bite-statistics-plus-media-myths-colleen-lynn-exposed/

real dog bite statistics can be found here

http://www.nationalcanineresearchcouncil.com

from The Pit Bull Placebo by Karen Delise

“…for over half a century in between, 1920 to 1970, millions of Bulldogs, Bull Terriers, American Pit Bull Terriers,  American Staffordshire Terriers and all their mixed breed cousins served Americans well in every possible capacity and circumstance.

Perception of dogs as killers is skewed

“…Fact: In 2002 over 420 children were killed as the direct result of physical abuse by a parent or a guardian (this number does not include death from neglect).

Fact: The majority of physical abuse deaths of children were inflicted by fathers or father-type men (stepfathers, live-in boyfriends).

Conclusion: Therefore, fathers are statistically the most dangerous of all persons.

The media vastly over-reports Pit bull attacks as compared to other dog attacks (and does not usually point out the other dogs breeds in headline)…

Another reporter thinks Kay’s opinions are skewed to the dark side.
“Two days ago, Barbara Kay, a columnist at the National Post, blasted pit bulls and spoke out in favor of breed specific legislation to keep these dogs out of Ontario.

Not only is she in favor of keeping the Ontario, Canada ban in effect, but she is adamant in her belief that “pit bulls are bred to maul.”

A damning, blanket statement.

http://www.examiner.com/article/national-post-columnist-blasts-pit-bulls

Kay would never read this, about real dogs, real heroes because they do not fit in with her fantasy world of Demon Dogs. Too bad.

END BSL… Breed Discrimination in America

http://www.examiner.com/article/breed-discrimination-america?cid=db_articles

Lies, negative stereotypes and myths

In the book Pit Bull Placebo by Karen Delise discusses how dogs of various breeds have been demonized since the 1800′s. People’s perception of ‘dangerous dogs’ has changed over the centuries.

http://nationalcanineresearchcouncil.com/uploaded_files/publications/230603563_Pit%20Bull%20Placebo.pdf

Consider the impact of these images imprinted upon the human psyche  …

l. Eliza and her baby (Uncle Tom’s Cabin) being chased by snarling teeth gnashing Bloodhounds.

2. Super-predator Nazi guard Doberman Pinscher dogs became a symbol of cruelty

3. The Time Bomb Pit Bull depicted on the cover of Time magazine

“My kids are around pit bulls every day. In the ’70s they blamed Dobermans, in the ’80s they blamed German shepherds, in the ’90s they blamed the Rottweiler. Now they blame the pit bull.”    Cesar Millan.  “Pit bulls get a bad rap because of irresponsible owners.”

From the Pit Bull Placebo

“…for over half a century in between, 1920 to 1970, millions of Bulldogs, Bull Terriers, American Pit Bull Terriers,  American Staffordshire Terriers and all their mixed breed cousins served Americans well in every possible capacity and circumstance.

‘…The first half of the 20th century finds new and different breeds involved in fatal/severe attacks. Collies, Boston Terriers, St. Bernards, Airedale Terriers, Great Danes, Chow chows, German police dogs (German Shepherds), Doberman Pinschers, and Huskies were only some of the new breeds seen in aggressive encounters with humans.”

A combination of the media’s need for scary pit bull stories (to sell papers), dog fighters using bully breeds for fighting, and society’s need to blame dogs for humanity’s problems have joined together to give the pit bull a very bad rap.

“…The early 1980s find the media continuously churning out emotionally charged articles about Pit bull anatomy and behaviors that were based on rumors, myths and unproven claims by both experts and laymen.

“When Pit bulls lost an arranged street fight they were subjected to unimaginable cruelty and violent deaths, because they became a source of embarrassment or failed to uphold the machismo image of their owners.”

“…In 2004 the media reported this Pit bull attacked and killed a 4-year-old boy. It was not reported that this chained, intact male dog was visibly underweight with numerous old scars on his head and neck. Veterinarian examination revealed the dog was heartworm positive, flea-infested, and suffering from internal parasites (hookworms). He was anemic with a low-grade fever and was diagnosed as having very poor body condition and muscle mass. Stress and wear marks along the teeth suggest the dog did not receive adequate nutrition during development. The dog was poorly socialized and very fearful.”

Elevate the conversation

Find the pit…

Many people have never met a pit bull and could not pick one out of a lineup such as this…

http://www.pickthepit.com/

Pit bulls are not a breed of dog, there are numerous breeds all lumped together and called pit bull…American Pit Bull Terriers, Miniature Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American Bull Dogs, Bull Terriers or mixed breeds that have the appearance or characteristics of one of these breeds…

Does this make ANY sense?

http://loveandaleash.com/2012/06/21/one-of-these-dogs-is-or-is-not-like-the-other-defining-a-pit-bull-dog/

There are NO incidents to date of a spayed/neutered indoor family pit bull ever having killed anyone.

Pit Bull: Fact or Fiction

1:  Pit bulls are inherently dangerous, as the Maryland Court of Appeals recently labeled them.

Fiction

It’s all in the upbringing, the socialization, and how their owners treat them.

German Shepherd Dog, American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT), and Rottweiler were tested using a bite sleeve equipped with a specialized computer instrument to measure bite pressure. The APBT had the least amount of pressure of the 3 dogs tested. (Source: Dr. Brady Barr of National Geographic)

“There is no scientific evidence that one kind of dog is more likely than another to injure a human being than any other kind of dog.[i][ii] In fact, there is affirmative evidence to the contrary.[iii]

http://nationalcanineresearchcouncil.com/dogbites/whatisadogbite/

Numerous places have recently repealed their bans on pit bulls/bully breeds aka Breed Specific Legislation.

Cincinnati Ohio’s vicious dog ordinance, which previously made ownership of pit bulls within city limits illegal has been repealed.

DeKalb County ban repealed

http://www.ajc.com/news/dekalb/dekalb-lifts-pit-bull-1433546.html

2. Pit bulls have locking jaws that make it virtually impossible to separate a pit bull from people or animals they bite.

Fiction.  There’s no scientific data to back that up. They’ve actually studied it and found that the pit bull skull is no different than any other dog. There’s no locking mechanism.

3.

Pit bulls are unpredictable and more likely to bite people than other dogs.

Fiction. There are known factors that contribute to dogs of all breeds biting and becoming dangerous. If the dog is male, not neutered, kept chained or roams loose in a pack, etc.

Factors that affect a dog’s tendency toward aggression include reproductive status, sex, early experience and socialization/training. According to the Centers for Disease Control, these concerns are well-founded, given that:

More than 70 percent of all dog bite cases involve unneutered male dogs.

An unneutered male dog is 2.6 times more likely to bite than is a neutered dog.

A chained or tethered dog is 2.8 times more likely to bite than a dog not chained or tethered.

97 percent of dogs involved in fatal attacks on people in 2006 (the most recent year statistics are available) were not spayed/neutered.

A female dog usually chained with a litter of newborn puppies

Guard dogs

Abused dogs

Neglected dogs

Starved dogs

Unsupervised dogs, roaming loose

Unsocialized dogs

All dogs, before they bite, give warning signals.

Three MOST aggressive breeds

The number one aggressive breed out of the 33 dogs surveyed, The Dachshund. Yes – the wiener dog. The study found that “one in five dachshunds have bitten or tried to bite strangers, and a similar number have attacked other dogs; one in 12 have snapped at their owners.”

“Number two on the list is an even more diminutive breed – the Chihuahua, while Jack Russells came in third.

“The researchers say that the bite statistics that have been released in recent years are skewed because most dog bites are not reported. Big dog bites are more likely to require medical attention, but this does not mean that those breeds are doing the majority of the biting.”

http://www.dogguide.net/blog/2008/07/the-3-most-aggressive-dog-breeds-revealed-pit-bulls-rottweilers-youll-be-surprised/

4. Pit bulls are good with children.

Fact.  Pit bulls were considered the nanny dog.   Consider ‘The Little Rascals.’  Petey was a pit bull and he never hurt Alfalfa or any of the Little Rascals.

Adopting a pit bull

Of the 4 to 6 million dogs and cats still being killed in shelters each year, most – roughly 1.5 million – are pit bulls. The great majority of these are healthy, good natured and adoptable dogs.

Public and private agencies spend $2.5 billion each year caring for and /or killing homeless dogs and cats. Pit bulls represent one in four of all animals taken into shelters. More than 80 percent of pit bulls in shelters will die before their second birthday.

Some guidelines in adopting a pit bull…

1. Adopt a shelter or rescue org dog due to the above. Also, irresponsible breeders are only interested in your money, not dogs. (this goes for all breeds but especially pit bull type dogs).

2. The dog should be spayed/neutered and given obedience training (basic commands).

3. Are you equipped to give your dog an hour of exercise a day?

4. Do you have a home of your own? If not, make sure that your landlord is ok with your adopting a pit bull.

5. If you are going to keep your dog chained up as a lawn ornament, used as a guard dog, or to show off how macho you are, please do NOT adopt a pit bull. Bullies make terrible guard dogs, they love people too much. And w do not need any more irresponsible owners.

Michael Vick’s pet rock

On Piers Morgan, the other night, Michael Vick once again expressed his desire to have a pet for his kids. Not a pit bull, he said. There are rumors that he has already bought a beagle. God forbid. (There was a fake World News report last December that said he had gotten a beagle but the article was FAKE). It is important to remember that Vick put his own pet dog Champagne into the dog fighting ring as bait and laughed at the dog getting hurt. He thought it was all fun and jolly to kill dogs in the most horrific ways possible… poor innocent animals who did not perform well.  He killed at least 12 dogs in six years.

Don’t believe me? Look at page 4 of the 2008 USDA report that details him torturing his kids family dogs, for his own amusement and that of his friends.
http://www.usda.gov/oig/webdocs/BadNewzKennels.pdf

but hey Vick says someone else made him kill and torture dogs, oh really… buy that and I’ve got a bridge to sell you.

http://www.nathanwinograd.com/?p=1789

Intentionally maiming and then killing dogs is no mistake and NO ONE can make you BE A SADIST. It is a calculated and callous crime. Vick not only funded a dog fighting operation, he also engaged first hand in the cruelty for six years. He personally violated dogs using electrical wire and then threw them into a pool so they were electrocuted. He also executed approximately 8 dogs that did not perform well in ‘testing’ sessions” and killed using various methods, including hanging, drowning, and slamming at least one dog’s body to the ground.

please vote NO, this poll now says 81% think vick should get a dog, http://www.tmz.com/2012/07/18/michael-vick-dogs-piers-morgan/

In another article, Vick says he does not have to answer any questions about dog fighting anymore. We DISAGREE.  He has NEVER answered the questions honestly.   Psychopaths/sociopaths are all alike… (Like Mitt Romney and his taxes, they think the rules do not apply to them)…

http://offthebench.nbcsports.com/2012/07/30/michael-vick-on-his-dogfighting-past-im-never-answering-these-questions-again/

Below are a few well written responses to this idea. Vick does not deserve a pet rock, in my humble opinion and that of many of us who have gotten to know and love the dogs that were formerly his at the Bad Newz Kennels… Ginger, Stella, Hector, Cherry, Handsome Dan, Little Red, Squeaky Jean, and many others, some who have passed. And in memory of those who were killed at Vick’s hands such as the little red dog in The Lost Dogs book by Jim Gorant. It is unbearable to consider such a possibility when the above named and unnamed dogs are still suffering, and Vick has shown absolutely NO remorse whatsoever for the damage he did to them and the others found dead on his property.  Three times Vick was offered an opportunity to meet with Best Friends, Bad Rap and Richard Hunter, pet guardian of Mel, who lost his bark and suffers immensely from anxiety. And Vick refused each time.

When a person refuses to FACE THEIR PAST WRONGDOINGS how can one possibly move forward?  Vick says he paid his debt. Truth is he got a sweetheart plea deal and should still be in prison for the ANIMAL CRUELTY charges that he was never charged with. He only went to jail for the federal charges of “Conspiracy to Travel in Interstate Commerce in Aid of Unlawful Activities and to Sponsor a Dog in an Animal Fighting Venture.” (explained below in Chris Durant’s blog post). Animal abuse and dog serial killing is a precursor to people abuse. A homicidal maniac is a homicidal maniac is a homicidal maniac. It makes me ill to think of Vick being allowed near another animal ever again in this life.

Michael Vick’s dog adoption app

“Best Friends is often asked if we think Vick should be allowed to own another dog. While his eligibility for dog ownership is a matter of law, imagine, if you would, what it would be like reading through a potential dog adoption application from Michael Vick:

  • Have you had a dog before? Yes
  • If yes, how many? Lots
  • Do you still have a dog(s)? No
  • If you have had dogs in the past, please let us know their current disposition. Dead or confiscated by federal authorities.
  • If you no longer have other dogs, please let us know what happened to them. Some I sold to dog fighters, some I had my cousin electrocute or shoot, some I personally strangled, drowned or body-slammed to death.
  • Why do you want to get a dog at this time? Because I served my time and kids want a dog.

OK, thank you, Michael. We’ll get back to you on your application.”

http://blogs.bestfriends.org/index.php/2012/07/20/michael-vick-dog-adoption-app/

“Sure, let Michael Vick get a sweet, furry, little four-legged friend; While we are at it, let’s just have convicted serial child molester Jerry Sandusky open a daycare or head a children’s charity of some sort.”

http://dfw.cbslocal.com/2012/07/19/michael-vick-future-dog-owner-no-way/

“Michael Vick says maybe he’ll get a dog.

“And, worse yet, at the end of this month — when the no-dog clause of his sentence for dogfighting expires — he legally can.”

http://www.ohmidog.com/2012/07/18/michael-vick-says-maybe-hell-get-a-dog

“Between 2001 and 2007 Michael Vick sponsored dogs in eleven fights. Additionally, he traveled to four states to purchase eleven dogs. Again, could this not be construed as 22 counts? Even with Vick’s meager sentencing this would have equated to 396 months or 33 YEARS!! And even at an absolute minimum, why was he not charged with four counts of the incredibly weak “Conspiracy…”?

“But better yet, if he had been truly tried according to Virginia’s Animal Cruelty Laws he could have been tried for twenty dog fights and nine executions. SIXTY FIVE YEARS! Instead, he was again allowed to plead out (while serving out his Federal sentence) to ONE count of dog fighting (the single Animal Cruelty charge was dropped as a part of the plea agreement) and received a three year suspended sentence for time served on the Federal charges. The prosecutor (Virginia’s Surry County Commonwealth Attorney General – Gerald G. Poindexter) didn’t feel that the costs associated with transporting Vick to Virginia from Leavenworth penitentiary in Kansas was worth it. There was also another $2,500 fine which was suspended as well. Nice job, Poindexter. I am sure the good people of Surry County think you’re a real legal eagle, huh?

“Another side note: Five of the surviving dogs rescued from Vick’s compound had to be put down. He was not held accountable for those either. But, according to Virginia law, he absolutely should have been. That would have brought the potential charge count up to 34 and another $12,500 for Mr. Poindexter’s ridiculous transportation fund.”

http://chrisdurant2000.wordpress.com/2011/01/02/michael-vick-was-wrongly-convicted

Look into the innocent eyes of the dogs, some still haunted, some still suffering from fears and anxieties and tell the world, please, does Vick deserve to own another dog???

And sign this petition if you think that the dogs and Jim Gorant, author of the Lost Dogs book deserve equal air time on CNN and Piers Morgan…

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/926/317/992/cnn-let-vicks-pits-voices-be-heard-invite-jim-gorant-author-of-the-lost-dogs-to-speak-for-the-dogs/?cid=FB_TAF_NPO

How to make a pet rock

http://familycrafts.about.com/od/stoneandrock/ss/petrocks.htm

Send Michael Vick Some Balls

perhaps we should send him rocks or balls with dogs names on them to jog his memory and conscience (does he have one?) and let him know what he did to those dogs are why he cannot EVER have another pet, no matter if it is legal… let him tell his kids the real reasons (The Lost Dogs) why he can’t EVER have another pet… IF he really had changed and had a shred of integrity, he would… (am not holding my breath)

local paper froths at pit bulls

my major pet peeves with pit bulls are:

1. they are bed hogs. has anyone ever written instructions on how to untangle yourself and get out of bed while a pit bull is snuggling on your belly or how to turn over while your dog is cuddling close into you?

2. they slobber all over you… I did not need that french kiss this morning nor the kisses all over my hands, legs and feet. Cici thinks if she kisses me enough I will get up but see the previous pet peeve for why that is not easy for me.

3. they want to kiss and say hello (wag wag wag) to everyone in the neighborhood.

dangerous dogs attacking…waa waa waa… BOL

It just gets tiresome, the same old blah blah blah in the news…

Pit bulls are once again blamed for people’s ignorance, fear and hysteria… the article is pretty balanced but most people won’t read anything but the scary headline…

No more pit bull discrimination in Ohio…

Ohio Governor John Kasich (R) signed on the dotted line, making Ohio House Bill 14an official law. HB 14 is a piece of legislation that will create a new and more refined system for defining a dog as potentially dangerous, removing the American Pit Bull Terrier and other “Bully breeds” from the list of automatically “vicious” dogs.

http://dogtime.com/pit-bull-discrimination-ends-in-ohio.html

Michigan and Ontario Canada are in the works, too…

http://www.clickondetroit.com/community/Pit-bulls-removed-from-Mount-Clemens-dangerous-animal-ordinance/-/2207168/8864914/-/ym11q8/-/index.html

Millions of innocent dogs are abused, banned and killed every year because of the way they look, and the heinous discrimination against them.   And the headline in your article feeds into the hysteria, stereotypes and fear. The cruelty visited upon these dogs is caused by irresponsible owners, dog fighters, and unfair stereotypes.

I live in Seaside, am a freelance writer/editor and personally rescued a Dalmatian/pit bull mix a few years ago. For the most part, my neighbors and people love her. But a few strangers fear her for NO reason. She is NOT aggressive and has been attacked by other dogs on several occasions.  Her typical response is to lie down on her back and show her belly (a sign of submission).Yet at times people have the nerve to come up to me and tell me that she is scary. Really?

One time in Border’s, one lady was afraid of my dog (for no reason, we were just walking around the store) and other people started reacting. The fear just spread throughout the store. Suddenly, this man brought his gorgeous 5-year-old blonde haired, blue eyed daughter over and let her pet Cici. Cici licked the girl’s face and wagged her tail. The whole scene changed instantly. I had tears in my eyes I was so grateful and thankful for this angel. Cici loves kids and is so gentle with them. Everyone could see that immediately and the potentially scary situation ended.

Many people have never met a pit bull and could not pick one out of a lineup such as this…

http://www.pickthepit.com/

Pit bulls were bred to be FRIENDLY to people and known as Nanny Dogs for 150 years… and pit bull is not a breed but a bunch of breeds…

No other dogs exemplify the BEST of the breeds known as pit bulls as the former Michael Vick dogs… Eight of these dogs, who were portrayed as the meanest, most vicious dogs of all time, have become therapy dogs. Many have been adopted into loving homes and are living with other dogs, cats, and children. Three of them in Monterey county (one died).

http://www.spcamc.org/rescued-dogs.htm

Some of the tale was told in the Lost Dogs book by Jim Gorant. And thousands of people follow the dogs and their owners daily trials and tribulations on Facebook.

Several of the dogs have made appearances on national TV (Rachael Ray, for one) but mostly the news is filled with hate and fear perpetrated against innocent dogs.

When do news reports tell about how the dogs have been treated by cruel, irresponsible and abusive humans? There is a known high correlation by law enforcement that people that abuse animals also abuse people including children. Yet animal abusers often receive slaps on the wrist instead of jail time and significant fines.

Whenever I read about any of the former Vick dogs what they went through, and I personally met the three dogs here in Monterey, it makes me ill.

For the first few months Cherry slept with his eyes open, a lot of the Vicktory dogs were shut down and trembled with fear/terror, could not eat properly, were terrified of strangers and new situations, Mel cannot bark to this day and many of the dogs were extremely skittish and wanted to find some place to hide. Handsome Dan used to pace and walk in circles because he was so terrified of the world. Even trying to get him to go on a walk would send him running. Oscar was absolutely terrified of people when he first came to Best Friends Sanctuary in 2008 (Note: 22 of the 51 dogs seized from Bad Newz Kennels went to Best Friends, 12 others went to BadRap, three to Monterey SPCA, 3 to Our Pack in SLO and the rest of the dogs were dispersed around the country). When he first showed up at Best Friends from the estate of Michael Vick, Cherry was shut down emotionally, especially when it came to being around people. For Cherry, meeting new people is still not always easy.

in the last few days alone, many people with dogs have come forward with stories of direct pit bull discrimination by McDonald’s…

Last November, McDonald’s was forced to drop one of their biggest egg suppliers, Sparboe Egg Farms, when undercover video, shown on ABC’s 20/20, revealed the horrors that are a routine part of that facility. And this followed hard on the heels of another undercover video, this time from the Humane Society of the United States, showing the wanton abuse of pigs at the huge Smithfield Foods factory that supplies McDonalds for its McRib – a sandwich that, according to Time magazine, also includes an additive that’s banned in Europe and Australia and is “most commonly used in the manufacture of foamed plastics like gym mats and the soles of shoes.”

A company that shows such disregard to the animals at the core of its business is unlikely to have any higher regard for other animals – least of all pit bulls…

McD’s fired a Certified Therapy Dog from one of the Ronald McDonald House’s because it is a Pit Bull…  here is the link to the story.

Buster Blues owner:
The worst thing we can do for our breed is to act like crazed extremists. Keep in mind that I believe this decision is being made by one uneducated person and that while everyone is mad at McDonalds right now, the Ronald McDonald house is a wonderful organization. It would be incredible if this all leads to the overturning of this discriminative policy.

http://blogs.catster.com/kitty-news-network/2012/02/03/man-fired-for-feeding-feral-cats/

As if it weren’t bad enough that the 7Up Bottling Company fired Larry Ottoviani for engaging in the responsible care of feral cats, the truly heartless thing is that they couldn’t have picked a worse time to do so. His wife is under treatment for a debilitating illness that has required lots of hospital visits; he’s taking care of a profoundly disabled adult son; and Ottoviani himself has had his share of medical problems. He had to have a kidney removed when doctors found a tumor on it.

So here’s a guy facing huge medical costs, and now he’s got to find a way to pay for $400 a month COBRA premiums while being unemployed. And, of course, COBRA benefits only last so long…

and then there is Taco Bell, who sent this stray pit bull to death row…

they did raise the money so now the rescue should be able to get her outta there…

Dog lovers mural

February has started with a bang of fame, a fiasco. It all started because someone had written graffti on our fence and the neighbor’s fence. After a year of the graffiti being there, a month or so ago, the neighbor finally painted white paint on his fence. I tried to find an artist to paint a mural over ours.

During the past year, NO ONE SAID A WORD or DID ANYTHING about the graffiti. Not the city. Not the neighbors. Not the police. No one. Nada, zilch nothing.

A few people said they would paint a mural for me but flaked.

Finally, a few days ago, I found a group

831 Art Walls on Facebook…

https://www.facebook.com/831artwalls

831 Art Walls is an advocacy group that is pushing for the creation of a public art space where ANYONE can paint legally and freely.
Description
We would like a legal art wall where anyone can come and paint to express themselves and experience the joy of creation. Our public art wall’s goal is to allow for artistic expression, as well as allow for more experienced artists to be noticed. Our neighborhoods are seemingly stale according to the youth. We feel that these walls can bring some life to the Monterey County. Like our page in a show of support for our cause!

So I contacted them and said Seaside Artists could come and paint on our wall/fence. And they came to our house yesterday and painted away. I asked for a garden scene, with lots of vibrant colors. Maybe flowers with dogs/pit bulls coming up out of the center. Frank, the head artist said he wanted to ask the neighbor (since their fence is much larger than ours) if they could paint on their fence, too.

All was good. Everyone was happy. A lot of neighbors started coming by and asked Frank for him to come over and paint on their walls/fences, too.

About noonish, a police officer came by. She and I chatted about our dogs. She said that one of the neighbors had called about the graffiti that was going on. She was sent out to find out what was going on. I assured her that I had given Frank permission to paint.

Then about 4 p.m. the neighbor who hates pit bulls was out there bullying and threatening the artists. He said he was going to have 30 police cars and neighbors come out and stop/halt the painting. I told him to go away. His dog was running loose.

About an hour later, another police car came by. We chatted and he said that there was some city ordinance. I explained that the graffiti had been on the fence for a year and NO ONE came by but now that we were trying to make a mural to COVER the graffiti we were in trouble? He said he was just the messenger. That the artists cannot come by today to FINISH the work, and that I need to go to City Hall and get permission.

Seriously?

The neighbor received no such notice as I did so I thought that they cannot have different rules for neighbors. Besides, our fence is about two feet and the neighbors is about 12 feet. Hello. And the neighbor’s fence is almost done while our fence has just begun. And I found out looking thru the fence, they are now keeping poor Lola the mini poodle chained up on a short leash. Lobos, the Siberian husky, found a way to peek his head up out OVER the fence. If he ever gets out, there will be trouble. I wish I could get those two dogs a new loving home.  I digress. Both dogs were barking a lot.

Frank should have painted MY wall first, completed it and then done the neighbor’s which I asked him to do and he went ahead and did what he wanted to do.  now I’m not happy because my mural/garden did not get done, plus the neighbor who called the police is up in arms, and I got a notice  to go to city hall and my adjacent neighbor did not and it was my adjacent neighbor’s fence that the other neighbors objected to.  My fence is maybe 2 feet and the adjacent fence of my neighbor is like 12 ft.

The 831 Wall Art folks are going to talk to the Mayor and the Police Chief. I will call a lawyer and we shall hopefully get this resolved.

They did take photos and are supposed to send them to me.

Moral of this tale?

if/when someone asks you to do work for them, paid or not, DO IT… complete it… Give the customer/client what THEY want. That is YOUR job (not doing whatever you want to do).

and

✦✧✦ I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together. – John Lennon

the city, neighbors, media did nothing about the graffiti that was on the fence for a year and it was ugly… f bombs and now all the entities are up in arms because I had artists paint over the graffiti…

I was on TV twice tonight, did an interview, TV crews all day here… the neighbor caved and painted his fence,  whitewashed it…

and I got another neighbor to do an interview so at least there were two sane people talking on the interview… and his daughter painted some of my fence too… and he said there should have been a compromise but it was just knee jerk reactions, hysteria.

it occurs to me that what happens when/if graffiti artists come and paint on the neighbors fence AGAIN… how many times will the home owners be expected to paint over the graffiti???

there is a city council meeting tonight and the loud mouths are supposed to be there running their mouths, negatively…

here is our fence… with the mural… am sure my roomie will paint over it… sheeesh…

me on the news… meanwhile Cici was running around wild, barking, wanting to be famous, on the news, too… but alas she is confined sort of. am doing a poor job of keeping her off her leg but at least she is not hopping/limping… what a day !

police and puppies and peaceful solutions, oh my

Police making friends with puppies at #occupymonterey Camp, compassion needed everywhere…  tis the season to cooperate and make friends and be jolly, right…

at first, it was all warm and fuzzy, exciting and fun, even invigorating and it seemed as though most Americans, even politicians and the White House agreed with the Occupy Wall Street protesters… but then we’ve all been seeing the police brutality, 5,000+ protesters arrested and evicted and pepper sprayed meanwhile NO Wall Street criminals have been charged nor arrested… maybe that is just a coincidence (I do not believe in coincidences, do you?) …

so do you think that what the media is showing YOU is ALL that is going on everywhere??? like the above, peaceful camps with cooperating police and cities are happening across the nation…and NOT being shown on TV…in newspapers… hmmmm…

could it be that the TV/media/government want citizens to STOP no more protests no more showing up and no more dissenting, making noise, being visible, so they are scaring taxpayers who have the right to dissent/protest in public spaces with all of the coverage of pepper spraying, batons and arrests, hmmmmm… could that be right here in America, home of the Free and the Brave or is it Home of the Free and the Slaves???

gee whiz, we will let you decide…

but first, a new law in Nevada has led to a 75% decrease in foreclosures because they are holding the banks accountable, gee golly willickers, could it be that simple/easy, YES…

a coalition of Occupiers and other groups are Occupying foreclosed homes and/or stopping foreclosures and even putting up tents in their own yards…

Author Naomi Wolf made a brilliant suggestion for people to book a room at their local City Hall, where residents have the RIGHT to call a meeting in a public space and hold a meeting, press conference, and talk about important issues and organize and solve problems… huh…

I thought that Keith Olbermann had a good idea, too…

If they evict an occupation dressed up as a huge nativity scene, isn’t that a War on Christmas?

but if you put your tent up in a national park and your tent has a sign on it, uh oh,  FREEDOM of SPEECH…

Jingle Bells ringing…

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/steven-van-zandt/democracy-in-america_b_1139463.html

…The simple fact is we do not live in a democracy. Certainly not the kind our Founding Fathers intended. We live in a corporate dictatorship represented by, and beholden to, no single human being you can reason with or hold responsible for anything.

The corporation has but one obligation, which is to increase profits for it’s shareholders by any legal means necessary by the next fiscal quarter.

They have no moral, patriotic, social, environmental, generational or even sustainable responsibility…

We need to eliminate all private finance from the electoral process…

Campaign finance doesn’t need reform. It needs elimination.

To accomplish this we must overturn Buckley v. Valeo, one of the two or three worst decisions in the history of the Supreme Court.

The ruling makes the extraordinary decision that money is protected by the First Amendment…

More money can beat Big money…
