Stand Up for Pibbles

Angels come in all forms. And many pibble (pit bull) owners would say that their canine is an angel come to earth to teach humans all about love, compassion and kindness.

One of these angel canines just happens to be named Angel. Her guardian, actress and comedian Rebecca Corry seeks to create safe and humane communities for humans and animals and to raise awareness about the abuse and discrimination against pit bull terriers and discuss solutions for this growing problem.

Some of Rebecca’s guest star appearances include: “The King of Queens,” “The Bernie Mac Show,” “Rules Of Engagement,” “Rizzoli and Isles,” as well as appearances on “The Wayne Brady Show,” NBC’s “Late Friday,” “Comics Unleashed,” E’s 101 series,” Vh1s “Best Week Ever,” Comedy Central’s “Premium Blend” and her own 1/2 hour Comedy Central Presents 1/2 hour special.

On May 16th 2013 the HUFFINGTON POST announced Corry’s plan to march on Washington  DC http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/16/one-million-pibble-march_n_3280839.html?1368716232 and more recently she discussed her thoughts on President Barack Obama coming out against BSL and joining the fight for Pit Bulls http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/20/obama-breed-specific-legislation_n_3785911.html?utm_hp_ref=dc

Rebecca Corry’s pit bull terrier, Angel was found roaming the streets of Los Angeles as a victim of horrific abuse. Her body was riddled with scars and acid burns. She has damaged knees and her ears have been shorn, likely with scissors. It is believed that the dog was overbred and used as a bait dog during dog fights.

Through a live, nationwide comedy show with performers such as Bill Burr, Kaley Cuoco and Whitney Cummings, Rebecca’s Stand Up for Pits Foundation raises money to positively advocate and educate about the true nature of Pibbles (kind, loving, sweet, gentle).

Angel and Rebecca are also hoping to speak to President Obama in Washington DC on May 3, 2014 at the One Million Pibble March she is organizing on the west lawn at the Capitol from 12:30 – 2:00 pm.

“My goal is to create safe and humane communities for humans and pets by advocating, educating and offering solutions,” said One Million PIBBLE March organizer Rebecca Corry.  “This is not just an animal issue; it is a social issue that affects us all. It is proven people who commit violent acts against animals will likely — and most often times do go on to — commit crimes against humanity.  The targeting of pit bull terriers is an obvious reflection of a broken society, but one that can be fixed.  The PIBBLE March provides us a national platform to be the voice of millions of voiceless victims, and we will be heard. Abuse and discrimination can no longer be tolerated.”

The event is attracting attendees from all over the United States as well as Canada, England and Germany. With more than 5,000 registered attendees to date and growing

Roo Yori, pet parent to Hector (a former dog of Michael Vick’s Bad Newz Kennels) and Wallace, world champion disc dog, will be one of the guest speakers along with numerous celebrities, sports figures, and comedians.

“I think any time you have a large group of people standing up for dogs that need help, it’s a good thing. Dogs need people to be their voice when it comes to laws and policies, so I’m honored to be chosen as one of the speakers to try and make positive change. I hope I do them proud,” said Roo.

  •     Leah Brewer, owner of the first-ever hero Pibble, Elle the Hero Dog of 2013

While Angel and some of the speaker’s dogs will be in attendance, the event is focused on human voices for their dogs. Other dogs will not be allowed at the event. Here’s why:

“Dogs are not allowed at the march because, simply put, dogs cannot change laws, the U.S. Capitol is not a dog park and this is not an opportunity to make it one. This is an opportunity for humans to be their voice. Having dogs there provides no impact and offers no solutions to ending discrimination and abuse. In addition, putting any dog of any breed in a stressful situation while trying to advocate for them is reckless and quite honestly, stupid. This event is happening for two very specific reasons:  to end discrimination and abuse. The only way that can happen is if humans attend. I can understand wanting to bring your dog, but the United States Capitol West Lawn will be respected.”

“The hardest part about saving dogs is humans.” — Rebecca Corry

You know that as far as I am concerned, our society is completely backwards in the way it treats victims of most crimes. Too many times the rapists, abusers and real criminals get off scot free and the victims are blamed. Blaming pit bulls is like blaming black people for slavery, the Jews for the Holocaust, and/or victims of abuse and rape for the depraved acts of their abusers and rapists. This HAS to change.

If dogs could talk,  I am 1,000% sure that if given the choice between fighting other dogs and living a desperate lonely terrifying life on chains, being overbred, being thrown into pit rings as bait dogs, and ultimately dying a horrific bloody death, that the dogs would choose instead to be someone’s beloved pet, safe inside the home, a family member, with a comfortable life. And they also LOVE staying at pet friendly hotels.

Which makes me think of my darling Cici. Yesterday i came out to the living room where her crate is. She usually rests in it. But instead, I found her lounging on the couch, all spread out, comfortable in her habitat. When I came near, she wagged her tail, rolled onto her back and showed me her belly for rubbing. Gee, what a life she has !  A truly pampered Polka Dot Princess.  And she deserves it just as all pets do.

Just say YES!

If you are looking for more love in your life and a special love at that, why not adopt Vicktory Dog Mya. She is finally ready for her forever home!!! Mel’s dad Richard Hunter has graciously offered to talk with anyone serious about adopting Mya, since she is a lot like Mel, for some special insight. Please share and help this precious little lady find her forever home. *ALL links you need to apply are on the site, and Miss Mya IS cat friendly.

25189707-1-largeSANCTUARY VISIT REQUIRED* Mya was born in 2006 and was only 2 when she came to Best Friends. Though she is nervous around strangers, and may bark at them at first, she will wag her tail and accept treats and petting once she gets to know you a little bit. Her shyness hasn’t kept her from having fun on walks and car rides. She also enjoys playing with toys and napping on a nice, soft, dog bed. And when it comes to other dogs, Mya has no trouble making friends! She even helps to socialize some of the puppies here! Cats seem to be no problem either; she has met and hung out with a few of them. Mya is ready for a home of her own. Do you think you might want to meet her?

like oscar, she is shy with people, but really comes out of her shell with her dog friends.

http://bestfriends.org/Adopt-A-Pet/Sanctuary-Animals/Search/Dog/25189707/

when i first met Vdog Ginger in 2009 or 2010, she was very shy too hiding in her crate away from people but boy has she blossomed the last few years. Thanks to all of the love, patience and compassion of her family, Ginger even went on a couple of pit bull walks, with LOTS of strangers. she has traveled and moved from Central California to New Orleans, and made other great strides.  If you are up to the task of becoming one of a very unique group of dog guardians, am sure that you will be welcomed with open paws and arms.

And if you have not ever been to Best Friends sanctuary in Kanab, Utah, you are in for a REAL TREAT. Ir is GORGEOUS, all those thousands of acres of magical red rocks, people and animals, too… the scenery is divine, oh mya What are you waiting for ???

Hector’s surgery

Please send your positive thoughts, love,  prayers to Hector the pit bull today, he is having surgery and to his family, Roo and Clara Yori.

“Hector is scheduled to have a bone-marrow aspiration taken sometime after 10:30 a.m. He may also have his spleen removed depending on the results of the advanced diagnostics he will undergo.

“In addition to the recent medical concerns, Hector had faced issues related to his dog-fighting past by battling babesia, an infection of the blood that is often transmitted through fighting.

“Doctors from BluePearl are concerned that Hector could have an autoimmune condition that may have been triggered by the babesia.

“Hector is such a wonderful dog with an incredible story,” said Dr. Jen Myers, medical director of BluePearl Veterinary Partners in Minnesota. “Our hope is that with the treatment he receives, he’ll make a full recovery and will continue to have a much better life than where he came from.”

Do NOT kill these dogs!

Please share, lend your voice and tell Santa Ana supervisors in Orange County, California not to destroy ANY dog fighting dogs. They are having a meeting in a few days, January 28, and want to just kill all the dogs that have been seized from dog fighting rings. Write them off as dangerous, vicious and be done with the dogs. THIS IS NOT OK.

All of the former Michael Vick dogs are living role models and testimony to the idea that ALL of these dogs deserve a Second Chance at LIFE. It is not the dogs fault that they have been forced to fight other dogs. Penalize the dog fighters not the dogs.

Eight of the former MV dogs are therapy dogs. Many are living in happy, loving homes with kids, other dogs and cats, too thanks to BadRap, Best Friends, Monterey SPCA and all the others that saved their lives and gave them a second chance.
Dog fighting is a CRIME. Punish the dog fighters not their victims…

 from Best Friends:

from BadRap:

ACTION ALERT:

Dear Friends of Jonny Justice, Audie, Hector, Handsome Dan & Company. Remember when you helped us send hundreds of copies of ‘The Lost Dogs’ to the Obamas in 2011 to help educate our President about the plight of pit bulls? You can bet you helped seed the anti-BSL statement that came out of the White House during Obama’s second term, and we LOVE you for that. Creative, positive, political action WORKS.

Now we need you again. Do you have eight dollars to spare? The Orange County (CA) Board of Supervisors would like to destroy dogs that come from cruelty (dog fighting) cases in their county. We don’t know why. It could be that they aren’t aware that all dogs are individuals and survivors of terrible backgrounds defy the odds every single day. Please consider sending one or more of the board members a softcover copy of ‘Saving Audie’ – as a way to demonstrate what may be lost if they move forward with their no-mercy policy. If you order from Amazon today or tomorrow, they will get rec’v it in time for their meeting & vote on Jan 28. If you live in Orange County – please speak up. The dogs need you now! Thank you!

Sweet Doggie Reunion

boy, the dogs are having a Grand Reunion in Heaven… Sweet Georgia, Wallace, Frankie, Viva, are just a few of the doggies who have passed on recently…

I Imagine Georgia greeted by Lucas, Wallace, Leo, Red, and a long line of humans and canines who knew her…

She was a Vicktory dog, Handsome Dan’s mama and he got to visit with her one more time before she left this earth.

Now she is :

Goodbyes from those who knew her well:

http://blogs.bestfriends.org/index.php/2013/12/02/georgia-until-we-meet-again/

Dearest Georgia,

I am forever grateful to the one who brought Dan to me. I love you old girl. You have endured so much, more than I can imagine. Through rape stands, the fighting pit and having your teeth barbarically removed, you never tried to harm the humans who tortured you. You have made more of an impact than any other dog and saved thousands of victims with your strength and stoic beauty. You are a hero, a martyr, a mother and best friend. I am humbled in your presence.

Please know that I will always take care of your son, that he means the world to me. There is an entire team of people working to bring other victims to safety in his name. Your legacy will live on through every victim of dog fighting who finds their happy ending.

GG, your body is hurting and it is time to leave this world. You will never understand the impact you have made. If I could trade some of the pain your body is feeling right now I would in a heartbeat. Please go softly, wrapped in love and warmth. You are home, you are loved, you are my hero.

With all my heart,

Dan’s Second Mama

Racism in America

I realize that people are horrified and in pain over the UNJUST Zimmerman acquittal. Trayvon Martin would be ALIVE today if George Zimmerman had not stalked him and gotten out of his truck. We all know that and we know that if Zimmerman had been black and Martin white, Zimmerman would be in jail now for many years to come. Racism is alive in America in 2013 and MAKES ME SICK TO MY CORE.

Our hearts are broken for the Martin family’s loss. Words do not express what I want to say so suffice that.

Please support the work the family of Trayvon Martin is doing in his memory …   http://www.TrayvonMartinFoundation.org/ please share

I agree with the assessment below and hope that civil suits will be filed against Zimmerman.

 ‏@TheRealRoseanne

thinking, ‘they know not what they do’ They’ve made all kids targets. This is one of the most evil verdicts in American History.

Now,, having said that some people on twitter and facebook are saying that Casey Anthony got off scot free (yeah, another terrible verdict) in Florida, and others and they throw in Michael Vick, as if to say that Trayvon was treated worse than a dog… That as a black kid he was convicted of his own murder.  I agree with that AND DISAGREE WITH THE MISSTATEMENT ABOUT VICK… TRAYVON’S LIFE DID AND DOES MATTER.

Given that I write about dogs and know a lot about the Vick case, I have to set this straight. Vick did not go to jail for a dog.

Vick got two years for gambling. despite his killing 8+ dogs with his bare hands, and in horrific ways, (and he did this for 6-8 YEARS)… he was never charged with animal cruelty nor abuse, so he got only two years, instead of the many years he deserves…. if you look at the court docs and read The Lost Dogs book by Jim Gorant … Equating Vick and Trayvon is CRAZY… Trayvon was an innocent kid and Vick is a psychopathic serial dog killer, NO COMPARISON THERE.

so this is where this crap came from… Marcus Vick’s brother says George Zimmerman deserved 30 years in jail, well, so did his brother Michael Vick…

http://www.inquisitr.com/848148/michael-vick-had-it-worse-than-george-zimmerman-marcus-vick-claims/

NO JUSTICE in either case… numerous dogs still SUFFER from what Vick did to them although they are now in loving homes, 8 have become therapy dogs, etc. but some are still terrified of strangers and being in strange situations, and the dogs have had to overcome A LOT of PTSD, trauma from Bad Newz… Poor Cherry slept with his EYES OPEN for the first year (or six months) and had to be carried. The dogs were so shut down and scared for their lives. Little Red was used as a bait dog. And so on…

If you listen to the interviews with their pet guardians you will know some of what what the dogs experienced was horrific beyond imagination, Vick got off easy as far as I am concerned. And comparing Trayvon to Vick does NO JUSTICE to Trayvon and compares a child to a python snake.

How the NRA and ALEC got the Stand Your Ground law passed in Florida and spread nationwide. If you care about the Trayvon verdict, you need to read this.

Little’s First Christmas
I don’t get the lights and I don’t get the tree.
I look at the mess and it’s frightening to me.
I wonder what happened to my very safe place.
Now it feels like a nightmare from which I must race.
But my Mom gives me treats and makes it alright.
I forget about all of the those bright scary lights.
I’m curled in my bed with my blanket and toys and my Mom sits beside me and pets my soft head.
The tree seems OK and I guess I love lights.
‘Cause my Mom keeps me safe through the long winter nights.
I’m just a small pit bull who had a bad start
but now I have love in a home with a heart.
So Merry Christmas to those who have helped me survive.
My greatest joy is my home and in being alive.

Healing paws and K9 angels

it’s been a very difficult and challenging week, to say the least… what with events in Boston and Texas and the Senate…we are glad that the lockdown of Boston is over.

now, a dear dog that we all love and his family also had a very tough week… Hector the pit bull… his brother Wallace, if you recall, was diagnosed with cancer and given a few months to live awhile ago. Wallace has now lived seven months beyond the diagnosis and the cancer is in remission. That is the good news. However, Hector, struggles with babesia, an illness several of the former Vick dogs are dealing with. He just overcame a bout of it but now he has a swollen mass on his spleen which could be cancerous or benign. It’s complicated…

Here’s the update. “We postponed surgery. This is not a simple decision at all. My vet has been working tirelessly to come up with the best solution, but it’s pretty complicated. Yes, I have a mass on my spleen. It could be hemangiosarcoma or some other cancer; It could be a hematoma. If they remove my spleen and it’s cancer, I probably won’t have long to live. If they remove my spleen and it’s not cancer, I will have a very difficult battle against my babesia which could also take my life. Usually dogs can live fine without a spleen, but I really need mine. There’s a chance they could save some of the spleen, but that is unknown. Without a spleen, I could stay on a babesia treatment for the rest of my life, but that could give me bad side effects. There is the option of not doing surgery, treat the babesia, and hope that the mass is related to the babesia and it will heal on its own, but without knowing what the mass is we risk it rupturing again. There aren’t a lot of cases like mine.”

The Yoris and the vet decided not to do surgery to take out his spleen at this time. He has gone home with meds.

We pray that Hector’s spleen is healed and his health improves miraculously. We send his family lots of love and light.  Paws and fingers crossed for canine angels.

Please keep Hector and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

V-dogs magical reunion at Best Friends

If this doesn’t make you cry with joy, I don’t know what will… bring tissues with you…

Six of the 22 dogs taken in by Best Friends Animal Society … Mel, Cherry Garcia, Little Red, Handsome Dan, Oscar, and Halle had a ball at their 2013 five year reunion. About 150 to 200 people came to the event’s meet and greet to celebrate with the families and dogs. All the dogs were very well behaved and enjoyed being with one another.

Cherry Garcia and his dad on CNN

http://www.hlntv.com/video/2013/03/12/michael-vick-dog-rescue-cherry-reunion

Years ago at Bad Newz Kennels, Michael Vick and his cohorts terrorized, traumatized and abused these dogs, made them fight or used them as bait and left them unsocialized and afraid on chains. Their loving caretakers at Best Friends and adopted families have helped them recover and heal with lots of TLC and the difference between how the criminals and humans treated them shows and speaks volumes. The dogs were NEVER the problem. The dogs were NEVER mean nor vicious nor aggressive. The dogs were NEVER violent.

“47 dogs, according to the federal grand master’s count, were taken in the 2007 raid, from which the 22 toughest cases were brought to the Best Friends sanctuary. Best Friends proposed that the dogs could be rehabilitated or, at the least, deserved care and feeding for life… this was the first time the courts ever allowed dogs confiscated from a fight ring to not only be individually evaluated and rehabilitated, but also to be eligible for adoption. Until then, the protocol for fighting dogs seized was destruction, it was considered that you couldn’t take the fight out of the dog once it was bred or instilled.”

“Five years ago … these same six dogs were brought together in a very different circumstance,” Hunter said, “they were brought together by criminals who had very bad intentions for them – the same dogs, but a different set of people. Today … these same exact six dogs are brought here together by six loving families who want the best for them, and the circumstances are very very different. The dogs are exactly the same and as you look around you can see the results.”

During the presentation at the meet and greet, the adopters shared about how magical their experiences with the dogs has been helping the dogs heal on a day to day basis… how the dogs have learned how to live life as part of a loving family.

http://www.thespectrum.com/article/20130311/NEWS01/303110017/Vicktory-dogs-celebrate?nclick_check=1

At the same time, their former owner was going to do book signings at Barnes and Noble but they were canceled due to protests by animal lovers.

Love, light and hope prevail.

“Their photos could be from any pet-loving family’s album. They show dogs doing what dogs do: helping toddlers learn to stand, flopping out on the couch next to the cat, enjoying time with the family in front of a Christmas tree, running on the beach, stretching out in the grass on a sunny day, and sleeping in their person’s bed under the covers. To look at their lives now, it’s unimaginable that five years ago these dogs were the topic of national news and debate. Many thought they were dangerous fighting pit bulls that should be put to death for everyone’s safety. Others looked at them and saw hope. Luckily for the dogs and the many lives they have touched, hope won.”
