Put the dog in the coconut

Ok, well, I always wanted to be a sleuth… Reading Nancy Drew books when I was a pre-teenager, I imagined what it would be like to solve mysteries. Fast forward to yesterday. I had a chance to figure out (once again) what is going on with Cici’s sensitive skin (why it keeps getting rashy and blotchy and itchy).  First, I realized after slathering her up with cream that she did indeed have fleas. Saw several critters fleeing as I slathered. Been trying different natural remedies for the fleas and the rashes and it seemed last week that the coconut oil plus spraying the bedding with a mixture of water and Oregano oil was working. Cici LOVES the coconut oil, laps it up as well as licks it off her fur but the rashes and itchiness was going away.  It is organic virgin Coconut Oil from Trader Joe’s. Am going to get a few more jars.  They’re about $7 for a jar (16 fl. oz).

Coconut oil has other benefits … skin smells good. weight loss, if that is an issue, keeping your dog slim and trim. Keeps the yeast away. Helps with arthritis / joints.

“the lauric acid in coconut oil has antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties. Capric and caprylic acid have similar properties and are best known for their anti-fungal effects.”

Until yesterday it seemed to be working. And it was strange because she had slept with me (as she did last night too) and I took her for a walk and fed her, gave her a few treats and she seemed just fine and dandy. Then I had brought her back to the bedroom for her after breakfast nap and noticed that she was all blotchy and rashy again. What possibly could have happened? I kept going over the events and decided to look up the ingredients of the treats. Voila.  I also found out that I gave her too many of them. (Am not a big follower of instructions but sometimes it is important to do so). It was suggested to give only 1 or 2 a day and I had given her five or six or seven. Oops.  Not only that but one of the ingredients was rosemary.

A few weeks ago when this all had started up again I had sprayed her with an all natural flea spray that ALSO had rosemary as one of the ingredients.  I think I also oversprayed her too. She did NOT have a problem, I don’t think, with the Salmon oil that had rosemary in it but maybe that is not true. All I know is that there is a common denominator here and it seems to be the MISSING LINK.

So there you have it folks.  No more Rosemary for Cici. It is good to be cautious when it comes to herbs, essential oils, and other natural remedies as well as regular treatments. Some may be too strong for you and/or your poochie pals. Tea tree oil, clove, oregano, cinnamon bark, are some oils that can burn when put on the skin (and more). They have beneficial properties but proceed with caution, dilute, dilute, dilute and for some, do not use at all.  Ask your vet (holistic vet). Tis better to be safe than sorry… don’t let the flea bugs bite !!!!

Greatest story never told

It is that time of year again… time to think about the Earth… actually, EVERY day is earth day as long as we live on this planet.

407095_535386986512600_1441235052_n

A few ways to consider making your pets greener this year and contributing to the health of the planet.

1. Feed your dog raw, fresh homemade food (locally grown organic) and/or pet food without pesticides, chemicals, processing (no kibble or cans)…

It was found in a study that our pets live longer when fed a natural diet and it is better for the planet.

http://www.findavet.us/2010/04/dogs-fed-processed-food-die-earlier-study-shows/

Our favorite food, Dr Harvey’s has a new dog food (and cat food) called Oracle… which includes meat… we have not tried it yet but am sure that Cici will LOVE it…

  • Just add water for a complete meal in minutes!
  • Makes homemade and raw feeding easy.
  • Freeze-Dried Raw USDA Meats
  • No Preservatives or Chemical Additives
  • Available in Grain-Free Formulas

http://www.drharveys.com/products/show/74-oracle

2.  Consider using natural therapies for your pets… acupuncture, aromatherapy, massage, hydrotherapy, homeopathic remedies, music and supplements are easier on the body and planet. Even can be easier on the wallet if you consider the high cost of vet care and drugs.

A green pet first aid kit

http://celiasue.com/2011/04/20/green-pet-first-aid-kit/

3. Teach your kitty how to use the toilet and/or use corn, wheat or newspaper pellets instead of clay and clumping clay litter.  Clay and clumping clay litter can have health hazards for kittens and cats and the mining of the clay is detrimental for the earth.

http://www.citikitty.com/

4. Become informed and educated about New Energy, Free Energy and

energy propulsion that can bring us to a new era of universal peace, eradicate poverty, and more.

It is time for the truth to be known: we are not alone in the Cosmos…and
WE ARE NOT ALONE — HERE ON EARTH.

Dr. Steven Greer, founder of the worldwide Disclosure Movement and the Center for the Study of Extraterrestrial Intelligence is working with Emmy award winning filmmaker Amardeep Kaleka and his team at Neverending Light Productions to produce one of the most significant films of our time.

This film exposes the greatest story never told:

“Once people understand that classified projects have figured out how UFO’s operate, they will realize we no longer need oil, coal and nuclear power. This is the truth that has driven the secrecy.”

On April 22, today, the film Sirius, will premiere in Los Angeles.  You can download it to watch it at home.

Sounds too good to be true? Check it out here…

Look up in the sky, it’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a Green Superfood bar…

I am always looking for treats and snacks that are easy to bring with me on the go, to the dog park, shopping or traveling. Doggie due diligence

I just did not want to take her to the vet again, spend $300 and give her toxic poisons like I did last year but sometimes it takes time to figure out and take the correct action. Dr Harvey said it’s called doing your due diligence.

I spoke to Dr.Harvey about Cici’s itch and rash again last week. while we were talking, he said I could slather oils and cream on her every hour. I did not get it in my head/gut until Saturday… delayed reaction?

and I had not been putting the healing cream on her butt rash at all, why I do not know. well, I did all day Sat. and voila, the bumpy crunchy rash is improving,  much much better…she has a red rash below her mouth that is harder to put cream on but I keep trying. And her rashes are now MUCH improved.

Organic Healing Cream

Organic Shea Butter, Organic Aloe Vera Extract, Polysorbate (From Vegetable Source), Organic Calendula Extract, Organic Goldenseal Extract, Organic Chamomile Extract, Organic Comfrey Extract, Propolis Extract, Stillingia Extract, Organic Thyme Extract, Tea Tree Oil, Organic Rosemary Extract

Helpful info about itchies from a vet

Labrador Retrievers, for example, are overly represented when it comes to food allergy. Wheaton Terriers, Bull Terriers (all pits), Jack Russell Terriers are a few breeds that are documented to suffer from inhalant allergy.  Brachycephalic breeds (dogs with pushed in faces like Bulldogs ) often suffer from infections and itches in areas that other dogs don’t have, e.g. skin folds. Cocker Spaniels and others suffer from primary seborrhea (scaling and itching for no other reason other than they’re Cocker Spaniels)

http://dawgbusiness.blogspot.com/2012/11/itching-for-diagnosis.html

while looking for an all natural herbal flea collar, I saw some on Amazon with oils I already have and one blend, Purification essential oil blend which is excellent for getting rid of fleas and soothing for bug bites, cuts and scratches.

Purification contains:
Citronella (Cymbopogon nardus) which is antiseptic, antibacterial, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, insecticidal and soothing to tissues.  Citronella is registered with the EPA as an effective insect repellent.
Lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) has strong antifungal properties when applied topically.  Lemongrass  is registered with the EPA as an effective insect repellent.  Lemongrass is also anti-parasitic and can aid in a natural de-worming of your pets.
Lavandin (Lavandula x hybrida) a strong antiseptic also registered with the EPA as an effective insect repellent.
Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis CT) is a top anti-infectious, anti-microbial and antiseptic. Rosemary  is registered with the EPA as a Biopesticide- Repellent.
Melaleuca (Melaleuca alternifolia) is antiseptic, anti-infectious, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-parasitic, immune-stimulating and a neurotonic.  Entire books have been written on this popular tea-tree oil.
Myrtle (Myrtus communis) is antibacterial and may support immune function in fighting infectious diseases, especially air-borne and respiratory.

Dilute several drops of Purification essential oil blend in a spray bottle and spray to repel insects. Shake well, and mist over entire animal (be very careful and avoid your beloved pets eyes).

Some great essential oils for repelling insects are:

Basil, Citronella, Cedarwood, Clove, Lavender,  Lemongrass, Melaleuca Alternifolia, Patchouli, Peppermint, Purification, Rosemary,  Eucalyptus, and Thyme

Flea rubs

Rub on your pets.

To 1/2 cup of olive oil add 1/2 teaspoon of one of a combination of the lavender , rosemary, or eucalyptus essential oil.

Apply aloe vera, vitamin E, black or green tea. A drop of lavender and/or chamomile essential oil will soothe the bites.

Basic flea control shampoo for pets with fleas.
12 ounces water
1 tablespoons of castile soap
2 drops of peppermint essential oil
2 drops of eucalyptus essential oil
2 drops of lavender essential oil
2 drops of rosemary essential oil

Combine ingredients in a jar. Shake well. Dampen your pet. add enough shampoo to make a lather and work. Rinse off well.

Herbal Flea control powder

1/4 cup cornstarch
1/2 teaspoon each of ground dried eucalyptus, rosemary, and lavender

Flea powder

2-4 cups of baking soda
1/2 teaspoon orange oil

Don’t use this on cats. other options is to add lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus, or rosemary essential oil.

All Natural Bug Spray Recipe

10 drops citronella essential oil oil

5 drops lavender essential oil

5 drops lemongrass essential oil

5 drops eucalyptus globulus essential oil

1 oz. of witch hazel extract

Put essential oils in an empty spray bottle. Add your favorite carrier oil. Shake well and spray on as needed.

Shake well, and mist over entire animal (be very careful and avoid your beloved pets eyes).

Apply Purification oil and Peppermint oil diluted with V-6 Vegetable Mixing Oil to a cotton swab and rub just inside the ear to eliminate ear mites in cats and dogs.

Purification smells good, clean, fresh not like those cover-up synthetic fragrances that mask odors. This oil purifies, deodorizes and sanitizes the air and gets rid of pet odors, cigarette smoke, mildew and mold and it also feels uplifting. I put some on my pillow, am spraying her bedding and mine and keeping bugs at bay.

Many brands you see in the health food store are NOT pure oils. Many have additives like alcohol and other preservatives. Young Living oils are the pure essential oil and contain no additives of any kind.

If you’d like to give your dog a gift of Purification, Peppermint, Lavendar or other oils, email or call me.

turkey day feast for pooches

ok, this year Thanksgiving and my birthday are one and the same day…

so what are you and your dog up to for turkey day (remember, be good, it’s a day to be thankful and grateful and appreciate all you have…

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/11/23/dogs-dressed-like-turkeys_n_786977.html#s188391

Genetically modified ingredients can be an unwelcome and hidden guest at your Thanksgiving celebration. This year, GMO Inside, a new coalition that advocates for increased consumer awareness of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in foods, is offering tips and suggestions for consumers on how to remove unwanted GMOs from their holiday feasts. From identifying GMO–laden products and offering non-GMO alternatives to giving tips on how to help spread the word on genetically engineered foods, GMO Inside hopes to give consumers the information they need to celebrate a non-GMO Thanksgiving.

Alisa Gravitz, president, Green America said: “Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate with family and friends. Consumers should be able to do this without worrying about feeding hidden GMOs to their loved ones. GMO Inside’s Thanksgiving campaign allows people to make educated decisions about what will be served at their holiday gathering.”

Some common Thanksgiving products that are suspect for GMOs include: Campbell’s Tomato Soup, Wesson Canola Oil, Bruce’s Yams, Hershey Milk Chocolate, Pepperidge Farm Crackers, Kraft Classic Ranch Dressing, Rice-a-Roni chicken flavored rice, Ocean Spray Cranberry Sauce, and Kraft’s Stove Top Stuffing. GMO Inside provides alternatives to these foods here:  http://gmoinside.org/launch-thanksgiving/.

If you already purchased holiday food containing GMOs, you can check to see if food containing GMOs has money-back guarantees. If it does, you can send food back to the manufacturer and ask for your money back.

Sixty countries around the world have labeled GMO foods. GMO Inside believes that all U.S. citizens have the right to know what is in the food they eat. Genetically engineered foods have not been adequately tested for human consumption. It is unethical to put an experimental technology into the food Americans feed their families without providing information on the label that allows Americans to choose whether or not their food contains GMOs. Americans deserve to know if there are GMOs inside.
and here are some no no foods to not feed your pooch

Snacks on the go

If you are anything like me, when you go to the dog park, travel with your dog, or take your dog to the beach, you bring snacks and treats and other doggie stuff but do you remember to bring snacks for yourself? I get low blood sugar so it’s important for me to have sweets on hand. Otherwise, finding a candy bar at the beach or dog park is often fruitless. Pun intended. Also, candy bars are chocolicious but not the greatest snack.

I’ve bought trail mixes of different kinds with dried fruits but found them too much to pack and forget to bring them. Some dried fruits come with too much sugar and/or sulfites and preservatives.

So when the folks from Peeled asked me to review their organic fruit snacks, I agreed. The Mango is delish. No added sugar no sulfites. And organic to boot.

I was amazed, no astonished, when Cici surprised me and ate a Mango treat all by itself. Definitely thought I’d have to wrap it up with meat jerky of some kind…

My favorite flavor was the Much Ado about Mango, definitely the best. It was not all sugary like other dried Mango snacks I’ve tried. And organic. and no added sugar! Much-ado-about-Mango is an excellent source of vitamin C and vitamin A.

Excellent source of: 2% Calcium, 2% Iron, 20% Vitamin C, and 30% Vitamin A. Gluten, dairy, wheat and cholesterol free.

The other flavors were apricot, pineapple, figs and dates (my least favorite just because I do not like figs and dates).

Paradise found

Organic mango, pineapple & banana

would love to try the Cherry-go-round and any berries (blueberries, strawberries, if they are going to offer them)…

Dog treats

The Barkers Dozen

http://thebarkersdozen.com/inside.html

Thanked us for helping them let people know about a fundraiser they had. They sent Cici several bags (three bags of three different flavors of dog treats) Delicious dog goodies… Cici especially LOVED the new organic Blueberry Bone-anza treats.  She also liked the Sweet Paw-tato Gluten-Free, Organic Dog Treats and the Chicken treats.

Ingredients:

  • Organic Sweet Potatoes
  • Organic Steel Cut Oats
  • Vitamin E

All of the treats they sent Cici are gluten-free, meaning they do not contain wheat flour or products. This ensures that dogs with allergies or sensitive systems can enjoy wholesome, gourmet dog treats, and their owners can provide them with confidence. These dog treats contain no artificial flavors or preservatives, and the treats are baked on-demand to ensure freshness and quality.

We measured the treats for their “drool-worthiness” and “tail-wag velocity” and other scientific measures.

Lacey’s Barkery

Cici got to review the peanut butter bacon dog treats, which comes in different sizes… Cici thought that they were yummy, although not many to share with her pals.

Lacey’s Barkery has other yummy dog treats too. Oat treats made with banana, blueberry, sweet potato, carrot, or carob. And they also have dehydrated sweet potato, banana, or apple treats. These dehydrated treats are organic.

Planting Seeds

Remember back in the 60′s when the hippies wanted to live in peace on the land, in self-sustaining communities and the establishment made fun of the dirty hippies lifestyle? True, there were a lot of druggies. And people got distracted. Nowadays, we hear similar remarks about the Occupiers. Bringing the message that Inequality exists is a gift from the Occupy Movement. Birthing a new awareness. And optimally, creative new ways of making changes happen.

In my humble opinion, that is not going to happen with the focus on protesters and police battles. The Occupy movement can (and some are) bring their energy and enthusiasm to local communities and making needed changes (ie, helping people unfairly being foreclosed, stay in their homes).  What interested me initially about the movement was the lifestyle … walking the talk… this needs expansion and creative solutions. Forget about camping out and doing battle. Instead, little changes add up to BIG ONES.

a little bit of history of the roots of capitalism

…”Using Adam Smith’s own estimates of factory wages being paid at the time in Scotland, a factory-peasant would have to toil for more than three days to buy a pair of commercially produced shoes. Or they could make their own traditional brogues using their own leather in a matter of hours, and spend the rest of the time getting wasted on ale. It’s really not much of a choice, is it?

But in order for capitalism to work, capitalists needed a pool of cheap, surplus labor. So what to do? Call in the National Guard!

…If having a full belly and productive land was the problem, then the solution to whipping these lazy bums into shape was obvious: kick ‘em off the land and let em starve.

…“Poverty is therefore a most necessary and indispensable ingredient in society…It is the source of wealth, since without poverty, there could be no labour; there could be no riches, no refinement, no comfort, and no benefit to those who may be possessed of wealth.”

 http://truth-out.org/news/item/8612-recovered-economic-history-everyone-but-an-idiot-knows-that-the-lower-classes-must-be-kept-poor-or-they-will-never-be-industrious

could this Great Recession (what is so great about it?) be a systemic, entrenched way of dealing with the masses?  hmmmm…

Two other powerful items passed my desk this week… now I know about Monsanto and their seeds…and Monsanto free seeds

GMO foods/seeds

I now understand why I cannot get raw healthy goat’s milk nor fresh farmers eggs, it’s ALL politics… why have healthy empowered citizens when you can make money off of sick, overweight, uneducated, wage slaves.

“Americans’ right to access fresh, healthy foods of their choice is under attack. Farmageddon tells the story of small, family farms that were providing safe, healthy foods to their communities and were forced to stop, sometimes through violent action, by agents of misguided government bureaucracies, and seeks to figure out why.

Filmmaker Kristin Canty’s quest to find healthy food for her four children turned into an educational journey to discover why access to these foods was being threatened. What she found were policies that favor agribusiness and factory farms over small family-operated farms selling fresh foods to their communities. Instead of focusing on the source of food safety problems — most often the industrial food chain — policymakers and regulators implement and enforce solutions that target and often drive out of business small farms that have proven themselves more than capable of producing safe, healthy food, but buckle under the crushing weight of government regulations and excessive enforcement actions.

Farmageddon highlights the urgency of food freedom, encouraging farmers and consumers alike to take action to preserve individuals’ rights to access food of their choice and farmers’ rights to produce these foods safely and free from unreasona-bly burdensome regulations. The film serves to put policymakers and regulators on notice that there is a growing movement of people aware that their freedom to choose the foods they want is in danger, a movement that is taking action with its dollars and its voting power to protect and preserve the dwindling number of family farms that are struggling to survive.

Radical Idea: What if women’s work, ALL work, were VALUED, respected and compensated properly???

“Why do women who contribute by producing the whole workforce have to plead for maternity leave that would allow them to recuperate from childbirth, get to know their children and their children to know them, and feed babies the best possible food?

“Why are such basic and humane demands so controversial? What qualifies those who favor formula to deny the overwhelming evidence and individual personal experience that favor breast milk?

“The wealth of information assembled here also strengthens the case for acknowledging women as perhaps the greatest producers of food. The individual production and one-to-one delivery of breast milk often goes hand in hand with subsistence farming on small plots of land “too small to count,” perhaps with a few chickens, a goat or cow, and individuals’ endeavors day in day out which benefit mainly those with little political clout or social status. Entire communities are surviving on that work—up to 80 percent of the food consumed in Africa is grown by women almost all outside the market. Are those of us who spend long hours of every day in this work also “too small to count?”

…Between breastfeeding and agricultural work, women are feeding the world!

http://womensenews.org/story/books/120414/work-breastfeeding-moms-unwaged-unvalued

…Cruel, unsustainable factory farms have come to produce more than 99 percent1 of the animals grown in the United States. Globally, livestock now cover 30 percent of the earth’s surface,2 and as a result of modern fishing techniques, scientists are measuring an overall drop in the health and diversity of ocean life. During this same period, these new farming methods have devastated rural communities by reducing the number of farmers in the nation by 85 percent—even as the U.S. population more than doubled.3 Given this scale, it is no surprise that the choices we make when we eat and produce food have a bigger impact on animal suffering, global warming,4 and other major environmental concerns than anything else we do.

Change Needs to Happen

“A group of politicians led by Rep. Pete Stark of California are taking Mitt Romney at his word—that “all moms are working moms”—and plan to introduce an act that would allow mothers receiving welfare support to count their childrearing duties as the required “work activity” until the child turns 4. Stark told Ryan Grim at the Huffington Post that the Women’s Option to Raise Kids Act (WORK) arises naturally from the Republican presidential candidate’s stated positions:

“Mitt Romney was for forcing mothers into the workforce before he decided that ‘all moms are working moms,’” Stark told The Huffington Post. “I think we should take Mr. Romney at his most recent word and change our federal laws to recognize the importance and legitimacy of raising young children. That’s why I’m introducing the WORK Act to provide low-income parents the option of staying home to raise young children without fear of being pushed into poverty.”

no one here but us chickens

Told you the other day that we were looking for raw goat’s milk and fresh eggs from a real chicken farm, not a factory farm.

I finally found some milk at a store nearby. I am addicted but it is expensive and too far to go  to get milk all the time.

I also found a neighbor who is raising chickens and has an organic garden, too. Plus a dog and a cat.  a chick chick here and a chick chick there, here a chick, there a chick, everywhere a chick chick, ol McJulie has a farm, eeeiii eeeiii oooo…

Julie has two new baby chickens and a few other older chickens who lay eggs. Not enough to share. Apparently, you don’t need a rooster to get eggs. And there are various breeds of chicken that lay eggs, usually a few eggs a week and they have to be of age, almost a year.

The city has ordinances that bottom line if your neighbors don’t care or complain, the city does not care. not sure that this is official but whatever. Monterey is kind of like that.

So we’ve been talking about getting a goat and some chickens here. One roomie is in favor but the owner said no no. He does not want to milk the goat. Our neighbors only care about graffiti on fences. Chickens, goats, who cares.

Here are photos of Julie’s chickens and dog.  Minka is a rescued greyhound about six, Cici’s age this summer.

where the chicks sleep and lay eggs…  they free range eat whatever she has on the ground, lots of organic stuff from her garden…

does anyone out there have chickens, a goat and a garden?     Cici and I need some real eggs and milk.  Everyone should have a little farm, grow their own food. Much tastier and healthier.

here’s a great post how to raise chickens and why…

http://soulsbyfarm.wordpress.com/2012/02/04/why-everyone-should-own-chickens/

How many eggs will my hens lay?    On the average, 3 hens will give you 2 eggs a day. That means to get a dozen eggs a day, you would need 18 hens.

What is the best breed for laying eggs?    Leghorns, Rhode Island Reds, Australorps and Orpingtons are all very productive breeds

What breed should I get?    Decide what you want from your chickens. If you want them for eggs, you should get a breed that lays a lot of eggs.

Will my hens lay eggs if I don’t have a rooster?    Yes. A hen only needs a rooster in order to lay fertile eggs that could hatch.

Goats milk is good for your dog

Raw Goat’s milk contains an ideal combination of nutrients in correct proportions, along with enzymes. It requires very little effort to digest and receive the benefits of these nutrients. This allows your pet’s organs to strengthen the immune system and detoxify the body, rather than working at digesting more inappropriate foods.

Goat’s milk can be used as a supplement with raw food, dehydrated, canned or kibble. Simply pour it over the meal and stand aside. When used with raw foods, goat’s milk will target and destroy “bad” bacteria which may be present while encouraging the growth of “good” bacteria.

Successful dog breeders have long used raw goat’s milk to help raise litters and boost the nutrition for over-taxed bitches with large litters.

Dairy Delights
Domestic goats have provided humans with milk since prehistoric times. The ancient Greeks and Romans drank goat’s milk, and goat-milk cheese served as an important component of the ancient Egyptians’ diet. Throughout much of the world, goat’s milk is the dairy drink of choice and for good reason: These tough animals thrive where the rough terrain and vegetation can’t support cattle. Goat-milk cheese is widely enjoyed in Europe and generally comes in two types: fresh, often referred to by the French word for goat, Chevre, and aged.

In the United States, goat dairy products have increased in popularity as consumers discover they’re not only tasty, but easier on the human digestive system than products made from cow’s milk. Goat’s milk has smaller fatty-acid chains that break down more easily than the fat globules in cow’s milk. Goat’s milk and cheese also have slightly lower amounts of fat and cholesterol than comparable bovine dairy products. Like cow’s milk, goat’s milk is a good source of calcium, protein and phosphorous. However, be careful if you’re lactose intolerant—this sugar also occurs in goat’s milk.

An increasing number of dairies in our country are producing distinctive goat cheeses to meet the growing demand.

green and white and nutty

Cici and i are exploring new foods and supplements in order to get well…

I’ve known about the Garden of Life products for a few years now but never tried them. But I finally took the plunge with the new Raw Probiotics for Women and Raw Super Green Food…

I don’t eat anywhere near enough raw fruits and veggies in my diet so that is changing and the Super Green Food helps.

Have also been taking Tibetan Herbs and Burdock and Chlorella in terms of supplements.

All are helpful in different ways, including detox and internal cleansing.

After reading about different raw food diets and having done juicing in the past, am also incorporating more raw foods into my diet. Along this path, have recently tried some new foods I’ve never eaten before… kelp noodles, kale chips, cacao bliss (similar to coco loco), and seaweed snacks. I finally found some raw goat’s milk, love it and Cici is slurping it up too. And got some young coconuts, drank the water and am eating the raw coconut. There is a product called coconut cream that is recommended but it is very costly. Most of the products mentioned above are expensive, too but I am sick of feeling sick and tired.

been teasing my roommates about getting chickens (for fresh eggs) and a goat. Will soon write a post about a lady I met in the area who has free range chickens (for eggs), a dog, a cat and an organic garden. After the fiasco with the fence, and other reasons, am not really going to get chickens but I sure would like to find some fresh ones (the lady I met just has enough for her family).  Huge difference in the taste and nutrients between farm fresh free range eggs and storebought.

what I ate Monday:

watermelon

supplements

thai coconut chicken and rice

glass of goat milk

scrambled eggs and ham

coconut water

sesame seed bar

kale chips

seaweed snack

chicken soup with kelp noodles (taste like ramen)

water

what I ate Tuesday:

yogurt with blueberries

2 chicken enchiladas

kale chips

seaweed snack

chicken soup with kelp noodles

lime pop

water

glass of goat milk

3 latkes (potato pancakes)

chicken salad

Wednesday

goat milk with rice krispies-like cereal and blueberries

rice pudding

chicken soup

3 latkes (potato pancakes)

 chicken salad

Cici is loving the chicken soup and the goat’s milk.

the creamy taste of the goat’s milk is addicting.

COW’S MILK vs. GOAT’S MILK
The winner:
 Goat’s milk
When Spanish researchers compared cow’s and goat’s milk from animals raised under similar conditions, they found that both have the same amount of essential amino acids needed to repair and build muscle. But goat’s milk contains a larger percentage of omega-3 fats, as well as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and conjugated linoleic acid (or CLA). Studies suggest CLA has a number of effects, including lowering cancer risk, improving bone health, and helping reduce body fat.

HEALTHY CHOICE: Use tangy, slightly sweet goat’s milk (found at health-food stores) the same way as cow’s milk-on cereal, in smoothies, and when baking.

collecting cookie recipes to make for Cici and I…

I might add a dollop of yogurt or apple sauce

1. Preheat oven to 350.

2. In mixer, cream peanut butter and sugar. Add everything else and mix until well combined.

3. With your hands, roll the mixture into little balls (they stay together better if you keep them small)and place on a parchment lined baking sheet. You could roll them in additional sugar.

4. Bake for about 10 minutes. Cookies should still be soft when you take them out of the oven. Let them sit for a few minutes before you take them off the baking sheet.

http://www.freecoconutrecipes.com/index.cfm/2011/10/26/gluten-free-peanut-butter-coconut-cookies

Ingredients
1 (10 ounce can) Pineapple, drained and pureed
1 medium Sweet Potato, cooked and mashed
2 cups Brown Rice Flour
1/2 cup Oats

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
2. In a large bowl mix all ingredients one at a time, stirring well after each addition.
3. Scoop 1/2 tablespoon sized balls into prepared baking sheet and bake for 10 to 15 minutes. Cool and Refrigerate.
Makes 4 to 5 dozen treats.

Confessions of a Knee Jerk

this thurs. i took cici to the vet… she has been hopping for two weeks now.  i was hoping that he’d tell me it was nothing to worry about…  just a little strain or something.

i was wrong.

people have called me a knee jerk liberal, baby boomer, hippie and God knows what else, but now I guess I am not alone in my knee jerk reaction (sorry, for the bad jokes)…

Cici tore a ligament and will need surgery.  She also has arthritis. I asked if she could have caught my arthritis and he said no. she is still young, only five and a half. I thought that dogs don’t get conditions like this until they are 12+ when they are seniors.  Wrong again.

it is not related to the car accident/surgeries she had 4 years ago. Her femur bone has healed beautifully he said.

been crying for two days. upset because I thought she needed more exercise and I’ve been making her situation worse.  plus letting her hop up and down onto chairs and the bed. i now have her confined with a tether and she has a cushion on the floor to lie upon. no more hopping.  take her to our park twice a day but no more long walks.

So now I really feel like a knee jerk…

apparently, this happens mostly to larger dogs and is very common.

it is called cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) damage or rupture.

http://vavetspecialists.com/surgical-services/common-orthopedic-conditions-procedures/cranial-criciate-ligament-injury/

Types of surgery

Tibial Plateau leveling Osteotomy (TPLO); Tibial Tuberosity Advancement (TTA); extracapsular stabilization; and the tight rope procedure

It is reported that dogs who experience a CCL injury in one stifle have a 50% chance of tearing the CCL ligament in their other knee.

http://www.petmd.com/dog/conditions/musculoskeletal/c_dg_cranial_cruciate_ligament#.TyQ24xW-ZFc

Causes

What is currently known is that all breeds are susceptible. Specifically, the incidence of cranial cruciate ligament disease increases for rottweilers and Labrador retrievers younger than four years of age, dogs older than five years of age, and in large-breed dogs from one to two years of age. The predominant gender this affects is the spayed female.

The causes for cranial cruciate ligament disease are most frequently caused by repetitive micro-injury to the cranial cruciate ligament, that is, putting pressure on the ligament in the same way, repeatedly. This action causes slight stretching of the ligament each time, altering the structure, and eventually causing the ligament to tear.

Some of the incidents which may bring about deterioration of the cruciate are injury to the stifle joint; a history of athletics, where repetitive movement can cause stress to the ligaments; a specific traumatic event, as from jumping badly, or any accident that causes the ligament to tear; a knee injury, such as dislocation of the kneecap (medically referred to as patellar luxation).

cost of surgery is quite expensive… and do not know how I will be able to pay for it.

most pet insurance exclusions are like this…

During the first 12 calendar months in which your policy is in effect, no coverage will be extended for the diagnosis, medical management, or surgical correction of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) or cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) damage or rupture. During the first six calendar months in which your policy is in effect, no coverage will be extended for the diagnosis, medical management, or surgical correction of intervertebral disc(s), regardless of the procuring cause.

alternative treatments…

this article has an amazing plethora of info on alternative supplements for arthritis

A good arthritis supplement

an expensive brace (about $500)

info about various ways to deal without having surgery

http://dogkneeinjury.com/conservative-management-cm/

my plan/protocol is this:

keep her real quiet for 4-8 weeks and confined

give her the joint aid (just ordered it) plus am giving her:

spirugreen

http://healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/spirugreen.aspx

  • Brain and cognitive function
  • Eye and retinal health
  • Heart and vascular health
  • Immune system function
  • inflammation management
  • Cell division and growth
  • Skin and coat health
  • Movement and flexibility
  • Central nervous system function

wild alaskan salmon oil (just ordered) for the Omega 3′s

may or may not give her yucca stalk by nature’s way, there are mixed reviews

the above is based upon what was said on the conservative management site…(below)

Weight Management … despite her being a cookie monster, this is not a factor for Cici. her weight has been maintained at 53 pounds for a few years now…

Inflammation – We started with Rimadyl and Omega 3 Fish Oil (1000 mg capsules, twice per day). After 1 month of the Rimadyl I transitioned to Yucca Intensive, and give 9-10 drops diluted in food.

Joint Support – Glucosamine and Chondrointin supplements are good to support joint health in any dog.

Rest – Make sure your dog stays in a confined area without distraction. Carpets are preferable, avoid steps, jumping, running or rough play during this time. Toys such as frozen kongs filled with peanut butter or bully sticks are a good way to help them alleviate boredom.

Controlled Exercise – Take a few, short, leash walks per day under controlled conditions to ensure your dog maintains muscle, and to also encourage the growth of scar tissue around the injured ligament.

Pay Attention to Your Dog – Your best friend will tell you how they’re doing. Go at their pace, and avoid doing too much, too soon!

no more hopping for Cici…
