With summer coming up, more and more singles will be taking their dogs for walks at the local park (an especially good place to find a date). Klooff just conducted an extensive survey of men and women to get their attitudes on what you can learn about a person from their choice of pet.

The result is the world’s top five dog breeds for attracting the girl or guy of your dreams:

TOP FIVE BREEDS THAT MADE WOMEN MORE ATTRACTIVE

(in reverse order, with “1″ being the best):

5. Beagles
4. Poodles
3. Chihuahuas
2. Labrador Retrievers
1. Golden Retrievers

TOP FIVE BREEDS THAT MADE MEN MORE ATTRACTIVE:

5. French Bulldogs
4. Siberian Huskies
3. Labrador Retrievers
2. Golden Retrievers
1. German Shepherds

Men are overwhelmingly more likely to see a woman who owns a Golden Retriever as girlfriend material than a woman who owns a Chihuahua.
The vast majority of men think that a woman who owns a Chihuahua is more likely to be dumb.

and if you want to be seen around town with the richest dog (oh no, he’s married now)… here’s Beast, Mark Zuckerberg’s dog…

Napa Valley’s First Dog Tasting Room & a New Breed of Wines

The Frenchie Winery is the only tasting room designed exclusively for dogs. In addition, the first two wines in a series bearing the Frenchie label are available for purchase at the winery http://www.frenchiewinery.com/ and www.wine.com. Each wine label depicts Frenchie as a unique historical figure, including Louis XIV and Napoleon and, soon, Marie Antoinette.

Frenchie, a Dog like No Other

The Frenchie Winery is named for a leader and a revolutionary in his own right, Boisset’s French Bulldog.

“Frenchie was a gift to my beloved wife,” says Vineyards Proprietor Jean-Charles Boisset, “to ensure that she would always be in the company of a French gentleman. In fact, Frenchie is the PERFECT French gentleman: he’s loyal, charming, always up for an adventure, and he never talks back! His playful, debonair and aristocratic style is reflected in the winery and the wines.”

Frenchie wanted to ensure that his fellow canines would be well taken care of when their people chose to visit Raymond Vineyards. Inside, the winery includes five individual kennel spaces featuring specially designed wine barrel dog beds. Above the beds, in the “Gallery of Frenchie”, hang canvas portraits depicting Frenchie as historical icons such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Julius Caesar and Marie Antoinette. Overhead, a gorgeous “Barkarrat” chandelier lights up a very special dog friendly tasting bar dispensing water for its guests. An outdoor play area offers canines a special view of Frenchie’s bioDOGnamic vineyard, planted to Bordeaux varieties.

The Frenchie Winery is located at Raymond Vineyards in the Rutherford District of California’s famed Napa Valley wine region.

Our interview with Frenchie:

how did you get your name?

Since I am obviously a French Bulldog and my dad’s memory isn’t so good sometimes, he thought Frenchie would be suitable and easy to remember.

what kind of wine do discerning dogs like to drink? what kind of cheese do you like to eat?

I have learned to love nearly every varietal out there, but I am definitely more prone to reds. I feel the color of red brings out the passion in me. Also, although I am a purebred which may lead you to believe that I would like a wine that is 100% of this or 100% of that, I actually enjoy a really good blend. Some of my best friends are blends themselves that unfortunately get referred to as mutts, but I look at them as the finest selections from many different breeds, similar to that of my delicious Napoleon Red Wine.

As far as cheese is concerned… I won’t lie, I love them all!

do you get to stomp on the grapes like Lucy (I Love Lucy)?

We tried that route and yes it is quite a treat to feel those juicy grapes squish between my little toes. But for the sake of time, we decided it made more sense to crush the grapes via our state of the art crusher. We use the best equipment you could imagine so I know that each grape is being cared for exactly as I would want them to be, to ensure the freshest wine possible. My dad is real nice though and always makes sure that at every harvest I get my own little bin that I can squish with my feet for the fun of it.

what do you enjoy about living in the Napa Valley?

Everything! I get to run in the vineyards, go to fancy restaurants and meet famous chefs (who sometimes give me scraps, woof), plus my winery is located in such a beautiful area. I’d say that I have it pretty dog gone good.

cici has a number of doggie pals, mostly boy dogs, milo, pablo, gizmo, teddy and harley. how about you, do you have any doggie gal pals? if so, what do you like to do together?

I have a lot of friends actually and since I opened my winery a couple weeks ago, I seem to be getting more and more every day. Let’s see, there’s Hopper, Rosie, Lillie, Pita, Jordan, Brutus and so many more I can’t keep track of them all. Hopper, Rosie, Lillie and Pita are all ladies, but I look at each of them as my little sister. They’re so much fun to hang out with and now that I have this new venture on my hands, I really don’t have time for a relationship, so I think it’s probably best if we keep our relationship strictly platonic. Brutus, Jordan and I like to hang out and do guy things. Sometimes we’ll watch some football or baseball, but mostly we just lay around and nap.

favorite treat?

Where do I begin?

favorite toy?

My dad’s Maserati. I love driving that thing with my sunglasses on and people always think I’m a movie star. I think they get me mixed up with George Clooney sometimes, but I don’t mind.

favorite color?

Red

do you travel much? if so, where have you been and what did you enjoy there?

I realize that my life is a bit different from your average dog’s, so yes, I have traveled quite a bit. However I must say that although I’ve been to a lot of places, my favorite place to be is right here in the Napa Valley. I have my mom, my dad, my sisters and of course my friends and my winery. What more do I need?

ever gone camping?

Not that I can recall. I hear it’s fun though. I just want to go so I can try a S’mores. I hear those are awesome.

do you like to swim? go to the beach?

Not as much as I used to. The past couple years I have been enjoying my cheese a little too much so I’m not exactly ready for my swim trunks just yet. I’m working on my physique, so I think by summer I’ll be ready to hit the beach again.

are there other animals you like to meet or play with? cats, fish, cows, horses, sheep, goats?

I’ve always wanted to meet a Platypus. I mean, what is it really, a duck, a beaver? I’m confused.

anything you’d like to share?

Just want everyone to know that I would love to have you come visit me at my winery. I think I have something really special here and I would love to show it to you!

Woof!

Nationwide last year, 5,577 postal employees were attacked in more than 1,400 cities. Los Angeles topped the list with 83 postal employees attacked in 2011. Beyond the needless pain and suffering, medical expenses from dog attacks cost the Postal Service nearly $1.2 million last year.

“Children are three times more likely than adults to be bitten by a dog,” said PTB President Kathy Voigt, whose daughter Kelly, was mauled by a neighborhood dog. “Education is essential to keeping children safe from dog bites.” The attack prompted their creation of Prevent The Bite, a non-profit organization that promotes dog bite prevention to young children.

AAP President Dr. Robert Block added, “Parents, please don’t ever leave a young child unsupervised around any dog, even a dog well-known to your family. Even very young children should be taught not to tease or hurt animals. And with school almost over for the year, children will be spending more time in parks, at friends’ homes, and other places where they may encounter dogs. They need to know what to do to minimize the risk of being bitten.”

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, in 2011 alone more than 29,000 reconstructive procedures were performed as a result of injuries caused by dog bites. Dr. Michael Neumeister, ASRM president said, “Even the friendliest dog may bite when startled or surprised. Be cautious, once a child is scarred they are scarred for life. We hear this line all the time ‘The dog has never bitten anyone before.’ A dog’s reaction to being surprised or angered is not predictable.”

“Any dog can bite,” said Dr. René Carlson, AVMA president. “If it is physically or mentally unhealthy, is in pain, feels threatened, or is protecting its food or a favorite toy, it can bite. It is important to understand how dogs behave and how our behavior may be interpreted by a dog.”

“Dog attacks accounted for more than one-third of all homeowner insurance liability claims paid out in 2011,” said Dr. Robert Hartwig, III president and chief economist

The National Dog Bite Prevention Week partners offer the following tips:

Avoiding Attacks

· Never leave a baby or small child alone with a dog.

· Don’t run by a dog. The dog’s natural instinct is to chase and catch you.

· If you feel threatened by a dog, don’t scream. Avoid eye contact. Try to remain motionless until the dog leaves, then back away slowly until the dog is out of sight.

· Never approach a strange dog, especially one that’s tethered or confined.

· Don’t disturb a dog that is sleeping, eating or caring for puppies.

· Anyone wanting to pet a dog should first obtain permission from the owner.

· Always let a dog see and sniff you before petting the animal.

· If you believe a dog is about to attack you, try to place something between yourself and the dog, such as a backpack or a bicycle.

· If you are knocked down by a dog, curl into a ball and protect your face with your hands.

Be a Responsible Dog Owner

· Obedience training can teach a dog to behave properly and help owners control their dogs.

· When letter carriers and others who are not familiar with your dog come to your home, keep your dog inside, in another room away from the door.

· In protecting their territory, dogs may interpret people’s actions as a threat.

· Spay or neuter your dog. Neutered dogs are less likely to roam.

· Dogs that receive little attention or handling, or are left tied up for long periods of time, frequently turn into biters.

If Bitten

§ Rinse the bite area with soapy water.

§ Elevate limb(s) that have been bitten.

§ Apply antiseptic lotion or cream. Watch the area for signs of infection for several days after the incident.

§ For deeper bites or puncture wounds, apply pressure with a clean bandage or towel to stop the bleeding. Then wash the wound, dry it and cover with a sterile dressing. Don’t use tape or butterfly bandages to close the wound.

§ It’s a good idea to call your child’s physician because a bite could require antibiotics or a tetanus shot. The doctor also can help you to report the incident.

§ If your child is bitten severely, call 9-1-1 or go to the emergency room.

§ When going to the emergency room, advise the personnel of:

-         your tetanus vaccination status;

-         vaccine status of the dog;

by the way,
“If conservatives could elect a corpse, they would, but because the Constitution requires a warm body, they’ll make do with Romney.

“…According to an analysis by the Urban Institute–Brookings Institution Tax Policy Center, Romney’s plan would add tremendously to the deficit. Extending the Bush cuts would cost the federal government $480 billion per year; Romney’s additional “tax relief” would cost another $420 billion. Under a Romney presidency, the federal government would lose $9 trillion in revenue over the next decade in order to lower taxes for the wealthiest Americans.”

For you and pooch

1. Travel with your own stainless steel reusable water bottle and a cooler or two (soft kind). Pack the cooler with plastic forks and spoons, napkins, paper plates, bowls and a few glasses along with items listed below.

2. Carry a large plastic mug and pack some individual packages of oatmeal, hot chocolate and a small supply of 2-minute noodle soups (there are rice noodle versions and kelp noodles). It’s easy to get hot water almost anywhere you go.

3. there are times during the day when you really need a snack. Stopping for fast food or buying chocolate bars quickly eats up your cash and ultimately drains energy. Bring your own snacks of nuts, trail mix, dried fruit, popcorn, chips, granola and other bars for quick easy snacks. If you have leftovers from the breakfast buffet, muffins or fruit, take them along to eat later. Orange, apple, lemonade, cranberry juice and yogurt are good, too.

4. Pack a picnic lunch or dinner, chips and cheese, tuna, salmon and / or chicken salad, wrap sandwiches, avocadoes, hard boiled eggs, hot dogs, tins of sardines and cold cuts (to share with pooch, of course). For dessert, bring along a supply of apples, pears and oranges for a day or two. If you need mayo, ketchup or mustard, you can always pick up packets from fast food places and/or convenience stores.

5. Bring your own tea or coffee rather than spend a lot of money and time at coffee places (unless you want to logon into the Internet for free). You can also bring your favorite muffins, cookies (wheat free Paul Newman’s) or tea biscuits and crackers.

6. A nice meal at a good restaurant is part of the fun when you travel. Eating out is enjoyable and it doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Have lunch rather than dinner out. Guaranteed you’ll be eating the same dishes at a much more affordable price. And, hopefully you will find or know about pet friendly dining choices along the way. Google, ask your hotel concierge or local tourism visitor conference center / chamber of commerce.

7. Buy discounted bakery goods and produce at the market. Are there farmers markets along your travel path? Perhaps a pet friendly farm that sells goat’s milk cheese with samples. Take a farm tour. Pick fruit from trees at a DIY orchard. Or visit a pet friendly winery where you can get out, stretch the legs and paws and taste some good wine without splurging. You drink the wine, pooch gets treats.

8. Is there a Panera’s bakery, Jamba Juice or Starbuck’s on your route. use their bathrooms (save on tipping) and log onto their free WIFI. Have a bagel and/or a delicious smoothie while checking emails, Facebook and twitter.

9. Bring your pet’s favorite food, bowls and treats with you. Put food in a plastic bin or sort into smaller bags for each day you’re away. Take bones and toys to munch on, too.

So you waited too long again. Mother’s Day is Sunday and you failed to get Mom’s card in the mail, and your options are running out fast. Instead of beating yourself up and sending Mom an “I owe you,” look at this as an opportunity to get a bit creative…and more personal.

Consider the following list of last-minute gift ideas and surprise Mom with your thoughtfulness.

1. Magazine Subscription
There are various dog and pet magazines for every interest, from American Dog magazine to Dog Fancy and your local dog magazine. Check out the discount magazine subscriptions offered by Amazon.com and find reading that will make Mom smile every month.

2. Online Gift Cards
Don’t have time to run to the store, or perhaps Mom’s favorite place to shop is online? Just about every major merchant offers online gift cards that you can have emailed to her within 24 hours, and sometimes instantly. Save by purchasing a discounted online gift card from GiftCardGranny.com, where you can find deals like 20-percent off a Dress Barn gift card.

You can also purchase your mama’s favorite pet food online from MrChewy.com, Doggiefood.com and/or Doggieloot.com.

3. A Phone Call
If Mom lives at a distance, a long phone call is one of the best gifts you can give. Set aside a chunk of time, think about the stuff going on in your life and questions you’d like to ask her, then dial away. If it’s an option, make the call even more special by using Skype video chat or iPhone FaceTime. Be sure to include Fido and/or Fluffy.

4. Club Memberships
You can order special monthly club subscriptions for everything from fruit and wine to movies and massages. Check out SpaFinder.com to get her pampered or set her up with monthly DVDs from Netflix. Birchbox.com is great resource for discovering new beauty products with tips on how to use them.

5. Flowers
It’s never too late to send flowers for Mother’s Day. Search online for last-minute deals from merchants that sell fresh flower bouquets. Otherwise, call a few local florists to see what they can offer for under $30. If Mom’s local, hit up your local nursery or farmer’s market for a nice bouquet or find a garden plant for the mom with a green thumb. Be sure to get plants that are nontoxic for pets.

6. Financial Advice
This one definitely falls within the “unique” category, but the gift of financial advice is invaluable for most people. This is especially true for anyone nearing retirement age, and the savvy ladies at LearnVest understand this. Through May 30, you can purchase a Core Financial plan for yourself and gift another plan to your mom for free. If you already have a plan, LearnVest will offer the Core Financial package for half off as a gift to Mom. Visit LearnVest.com for details.

7. Brunch
Mother’s Day brunch deals abound in cities across the country. Call Mom’s favorite pet friendly restaurants to find the best specials. If reservations are booked up, consider preparing an at-home brunch. Present your mother with a menu of her preferred breakfast dishes like banana pancakes, veggie omelette or french toast. Don’t forget to buy a bottle of inexpensive champagne and orange juice for a special toast and have pet treats on hand for the furry ones.

8. Her Own Domain
This may not work if your mother’s name is Mary Smith or Susan Jones, but otherwise you might just have a chance of securing an Internet domain in her own name or her furry friend’s name. If you’re handy with the computer, you might whip up a silly website focusing on the pet that she loves. You can often purchase your desired url for as little as $12.

9. Slideshow
Every mother loves to relive family moments and photos are sure to bring a smile to her face. Put together a slideshow of Mom’s favorite family and pet pictures with captions that spark each memory and sit around the computer while you watch it together. If Mom is miles away, share the slideshow via email so she can access it on the computer or from her smartphone.

10. Make a free appointment at the local Banfield (Pet Smart) vet pet hospital with the coupon below.

11. Make chocolate cupcakes in a gift basket full of favorite items for mom and her pets.

75 million Americans believe that bringing their dog to the workplace would increase their job satisfaction, and a recent study backs those claims up by reporting that people feel less stressed with their faithful companion by their side.

Despite all of the craziness going on in our world this week, there has been a bunch of good news regarding pit bulls, yay… here are a few of the stories…

Lilly the pit bull lost her foot and leg saving her owner from certain death by a freight train…

If you would like to help the heroic Lilly, who will need a lot of medical care and therapy…

“A fund has been set up to help offset Lilly’s medical care, which will likely run into the thousands of dollars. For more information, visit www.mspca.org/helplilly.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/09/hero-dog-risks-life-to-pu_n_1502887.html?1336579247&ncid=edlinkusaolp00000009

United Airline has lifted the ban on pit bull terriers and Staffordshires, nine breeds total due to public pressure and outcry…

http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/breaking/chi-united-lifts-ban-on-9-breeds-of-dog-20120508,0,4836681.story

Wonderful and creative way to help pit bulls…

http://www.nashvillescene.com/countrylife/archives/2012/04/05/petes-pick-of-the-week-born-in-the-usa

great tribute for the V dogs…

pit bull bans lifted

http://www.examiner.com/article/pit-bull-ban-lifted-1st-pittie-up-for-adoption?CID=examiner_alerts_article

Pit bulls are no longer a restricted household pet in DeKalb County, a zoning change that its advocates say should help the county focus more on all dangerous dogs and possibly improve the adoption rate from its shelter.

and thanks to Stubby dog, Cici stars in a video…

She shows off her polka dot belly without a sound, and a single roll onto her back!
