Yummy Valentines Day gifts

If you love your dog(s) and want to give them a bunch of fantastic (and healthy all natural, too) treats this Valentine’s Day, all of these (below) scored OFF THE CHARTS on Cici’s YUMMY Drooly Delicious chart. Five paws up !!!!

Due to the winter snow, Cici was not able to taste test the NEW Old Mother Hubbard treats, but she LOVED their other ones, and this survey is just too cute. Plus, OMH is offering giveaways that you can win, if you go to on their Facebook page February 8 through 14.

Gourmet Goodies Valentine’s Survey  Counts the Ways People Prefer Pooches Over Partners

Men may be from Mars and women from Venus, but they do agree on “Pluto”—how much they love their dogs. Old Mother Hubbard, in honor of its newest line of bakery-inspired dog treats, Gourmet Goodies, conducted a Valentine’s Day “Puppy Love” survey, and it’s no contest—pooches reign supreme over human partners in this lighthearted look at who wins ‘top dog’ in true love. Gourmet Goodies surveyed 741 dog-owning adults in relationships to determine whether 10 key characteristics vary between human and canine relationships: love at first sight, faithfulness, friendship, unwavering devotion, protection from danger, being eager to please, always happy to see me, easygoing, always makes me feel good and doesn’t talk back or criticize.

  • K-9s a perfect 10:  Fifty-five percent of dog owners in a human relationship strongly agree or agree that all 10 characteristics described their relationship with their dog. Only 32 percent feel the same about their human partner.
  • Instant attraction:  Love at first sight strikes more often with dogs, with 78 percent saying they fell in love with their dogs at first glance, versus only 67 percent for human partners.
  • Doggone devotion: When it comes to unconditional love and being faithful and devoted for life, furry friends are the best. Ninety-three percent of dog owners believe their pooch “loves them without question,” as compared to their human partners at 85 percent. As for fidelity, dogs win paws down once again, as 91 percent voted in favor of the pups, versus 82 percent for their significant others.
  • Fido’s the biggest fan: Dogs rise to the top with their ability to unequivocally support their person. Eighty-four percent of dogs “Don’t talk back or criticize” as compared to 47 percent of humans; they are “eager to please” (84 percent vs. 66 percent); and humans appreciate their “willingness to go anywhere” (86 percent vs. 73 percent).
  • Throwing humans a bone: Alas, relationships haven’t entirely gone to the dogs. Men and women agree, 94 percent and 90 percent respectively, that their human partner slightly edges out Fido in the best friend category…but only by a nose (eight percent and four percent, respectively).

Given the affection humans lavish on their canine companions, it’s no surprise that 33 percent said they plan to buy their dogs Valentine’s Day gifts. And when it comes to selecting a gift, pet parents find that the way to their dogs’ hearts is through their tummies, with the majority of dog owners identifying a “special treat” as the Valentine’s Day gift of choice for their beloved bowser. “Dogs certainly are easy to please, but that’s what makes pet parents want to go the extra mile to give them something special,” said Chanda Leary-Coutu, marketing communications manager for Old Mother Hubbard. “With Gourmet Goodies, pet parents can let their dogs indulge in artisanal-quality treats that before could only be found in a pet boutique.” The Old Mother Hubbard Gourmet Goodies line delivers irresistible flavors made with natural ingredients pooches will love. With seven new options to choose from, every day can be a new canine culinary adventure. Old Mother Hubbard Gourmet Goodies are available in 6 oz. re-sealable packages for $5.99 (U.S.) in the following varieties:

  • Crispers: Crunchy, cheesy and savory, Crispers are available in Cheddar, Chicken & Rosemary and Parmesan, Bacon & Tomato.
  • Soft Bakes: Moist cookies come in three varieties — Peanut Butter & Carob, Applesauce Oatmeal and Carrot & Pumpkin.
  • Fruit’ins: Two delicious cookie and fruit layers are available in Honey, Oatmeal & Blueberries and Honey, Apple & Bacon.

In celebration of Valentine’s Day, from February 8 through 14, Old Mother Hubbard will be offering daily Gourmet Goodies giveaways on their Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/OMHpetsnacks, as well as highlighting “Puppy Love” survey statistics.

More Survey Results  Who gives better smooches, your pooch or your mate? And what about public displays of affection? The Gourmet Goodies “Puppy Love” survey found:

  • Maybe it’s doggie breath?:  Men are more affectionate to their human partners – 68 percent would rather smooch their mate than their pup, and 74 percent of men agree that their human partner gives better kisses than their four-legged friend.
  • Women want kiss quality & quantity:  Women, however, are more likely than men to believe their pooch gives the best smooch (24 percent versus 14 percent), which may lead to why women are twice as likely (26 percent versus 12 percent) to kiss their dog more often on a daily basis. But the majority of women (64 percent) do agree that their human partner gives “the best” kisses as compared to their four-legged “true loves.”
  • People vs. pup PDA: Men (58 percent) prefer to hug or kiss their human partner in public, whereas women are more equal opportunity about with whom they show their affection – 36 percent will kiss or hug their partner or their pup in public.

About the Survey Conducted via Toluna’s Online Omnibus, interviews were completed Jan. 10 – 14, 2014, among a sample of 741 adults who own a dog, and are in a relationship with a partner. The margin of error on this sample is +/- 3%.

Easy to be SuperGreen

Look up in the sky, it’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a Green Superfood bar…

I am always looking for treats and snacks that are easy to bring with me on the go, to the dog park, shopping or traveling. I get hungry and my blood sugar drops and before you know it, I become grumpy and growly and sweaty. And I do not eat enough greens in my diet. I have also been seeking how I can eat my greens without the yucky taste.  These new Green Superfood bars hit all the right notes… yummy tasting, easy to carry, healthy and flavorful without all the junk of a candy bar. I have never had green foods taste this good. In fact, I couldn’t even taste the green foods. Now that is how I like them. Check out the ingredients below…(Note: not recommended for dogs due to chocolate in the bars)…

The new Green SuperFood Chocolate Chip Coconut whole food energy bar features organic nuts and dates and is sweetened with organic Palm Nectar. It has 240 calories, 5 grams of protein, 10 grams of healthy omega fats, 13 grams of sugar and 36 grams of carbohydrates.  In addition to the Amazing Grass Green SuperFood blend, it also contains the following organic ingredients:  Rolled Oats; Brown Rice Syrup; Coconut; Rice Crisps; Almonds; Dates; Peanuts; and Peanut Butter.

The new Green SuperFood Sweet & Savory Almond whole food energy bar combines the saltiness of organic nuts with the sweetness of organic raisins and the richness of organic chocolate.  It has 210 calories, 6 grams of protein, 13 grams of healthy omega fats, 13 grams of sugar and 21 grams of carbohydrates.  In addition to the Amazing Grass Green SuperFood blend and Sea Salt, it also contains the following organic ingredients:  Roasted Almonds; Roasted Peanuts; Brown Rice Syrup; Raisins; Dark Chocolate; Pumpkin Seeds; Cashews; Agave; Rice Crisps; Vanilla Extract; Almond Butter; and Flax Seeds.

The energy bars feature Amazing Grass Green SuperFood, a blend that provides more organic whole leaf greens per gram than the competition, and contains no soy lecithin fillers.  The blend consists of the following organic ingredients:  Wheat Grass; Barley Grass; Alfalfa; Spirulina; Spinach; Broccoli; Acai; Maca; Carrot; Beet; Rose Hips; Flax Lignans and Peppermint.  It also contains Raspberry, Pineapple, Green Tea, L. Adidophilus, Alpha and Beta Amylase, Protease, Lipase, Lactase and Cellulase.

The new flavors are available nationwide at Whole Foods Markets.  They are all:  raw; cold processed; gluten, soy and dairy-free; kosher; and vegan (except for the flavors with peanut butter and whey).

For the majority of people, stress and consumption of unhealthy processed foods can create an acidic imbalance in the blood that, among other problems, can cause the body to store water and build up fat in the arteries (cholesterol) as protection from acidic blood.  The rich chlorophyll content and high alkalinity of Amazing Grass Green SuperFood helps to combat acidity and restore blood to the optimal pH level.  It also promotes improved circulation, digestion and regular elimination.

The Amazing Grass Green SuperFood blend is a unique and potent combination of nature’s most nourishing, cleansing and rebuilding green superfoods including more than 70% certified organic ingredients and an enhanced digestive enzyme and active probiotic blend to improve nutrient absorption.  Amazing Grass Green SuperFood combines nutrient dense green food concentrates with other uniquely powerful ingredients like açaí and maca.  Sambazon? Acai, is a purple berry loaded with antioxidants, healthy omega fats, fiber and protein that grows in the Amazon Rainforest; and maca is a nutritious root grown at high altitudes in Peru that is known to be an adaptogen that boosts the immune system and provides sustained energy, vitality and mental clarity.

Books

Adalyn’s Clare is a heartwarming, adventure-filled story that draws attention to the realities of social anxiety and the need to help create meaningful relationships for children who have difficulty making friends in grade school – just like Adalyn.

Author Kari Dunn Buron developed an Autism Spectrum Disorders Certificate program for educators at Hamline University in St. Paul, MN, and has done volunteer work specific to autism around the world.

Adalyn, a smart but lonely fourth grader, is not very good at finding human friends but loves animals and is a whiz at science. Her favorite place in the whole world is the science room where her “animal best friends” live. In fact, Adalyn knows details about animals and the places they inhabit that most of us would never know or remember.

Adalyn often finds people confusing and frustrating, which in turn causes her a great deal of worry and often gets her into trouble. Clare is a therapy puppy. When Clare gets assigned to help Adalyn calm her anxieties and help her find (human) friends, it seems like a tall order for a 3-month-old puppy. But Clare takes it in her stride. It’s during these times when Adalyn worries that Clare creeps up close and gently puts her chin on Adalyn’s foot to reassure her. Together they wait, silently and relaxed, until Adalyn’s nerves start to get smaller.  Recommended for young readers in grades 3-6.

Slow down, Fido… Cici scarfs up her food, she eats sooos fast, you’d think it was her last meal. Food gulping isn’t only a messy habit that’s difficult to break, but a behavior that can lead to vomiting, choking, bloat and digestive issues. Plus, eager eaters don’t realize how much they just ate, so they keep begging for between-meal treats that can quickly turn into extra pounds. Fortunately, now there’s an innovative way for pet parents to end this “feeding frenzy” by turning mealtime into a challenging, entertaining game.
The Company of Animals presents GREEN by NORTHMATE – an innovative “turf placemat” for pets that turns mealtime into a fun , stimulating game. Just scatter a handful of kibble or two across the deeply sculpted surface. Then it’s up to the dog or cat to seek out the food in the valleys between the simulated grass blades. Especially recommended for aggressive gulpers and pets on a restricted calorie diet , GREEN prolongs eating time, making meals healthier and more fun . And since this product is made of durable plastic that’s phthalate-free, it’s 100% pet and dishwasher safe.

Brewer’s yeast and garlic helps to repel fleas. You can give your doggie treats and bye bye bugs. This daily nutritional supplement helps support healthy blood sugar levels and can also be especially helpful during flea and tick season and during times of stress. Available in chewable tablets or tasty soft chews!  Cici LOVES them.

Does your doggie have bad breath? PlaqClnz may be the answer. For fresh breath and good oral care, go to www.plaqclnz.com for more details.
Its zinc-based formula works to stop bad breath (a warning sign of deteriorating gum and teeth conditions) while it guards against the build-up of plaque and tarter. Most dogs 3+ years already have the signs.

Are your pets scratching up the house? Then SoftClaws nail caps for dogs and indoor cats could help. The caps mute scratching damage and avoids cat declawing…a big issue for cat parents.
See www.softclaws.net  for details, size and color selections. These were invented by a vet.
When you travel with your dog/cat, putting these on helps to avoid tearing up car upholstery, hotel furnishings, strangers’ clothing and more.

To apply, fill each vinyl nail cap with the adhesive that’s provided, then slide it on over your dog’s toenail. It stays on for 4-6 weeks.

Each low-cost nail kit comes with 40 nail caps, the adhesive that secures them onto your dog’s toenails, and simple instructions.

You can place them only on the front paws or on your dog’s front and back paws.

for the humans

Mighty Mug is great for pet parents and parents, people like me who are clumsy and spill everything. I LOVE IT. (only wish it came in PURPLE). This mug is amazing. powered by patented Smartgrip Technology which allows Mighty to resist tipping over and spilling that cup of tea, hot chocolate or coffee all over your pants (or even worse your computer). The best part about the Mighty Mug is that it knows the difference between an accidental knock and going in for a sip. If you can imagine a mug that won’t fall over even when punched but lifts naturally then you gotta try one for yourself, your favorite pet parent or computer geek coffee drinker.

Chia seeds bars

I LOVE LOVE LOVE these bars. Give the gift of CHIA this holiday season! these yummy bars are healthy, easy to bring with you to the dog park, traveling and/or to carry in your purse. Filled with Omega 3 and tasty… I love the ACAI BERRY and also the COCONUT bars. They also come in PEANUT BUTTER AND CHOCOLATE flavor… great replacement to the high-sugar, empty-calorie-filled, non-nutrient providing candy all too often around the house during the holidays. They have only 100 calories and 5g of sugar per serving. And best of all, there are actual health BENEFITS to eating them: Chia provides six times more calcium than whole milk, six times more protein than soy, 15 times more magnesium than broccoli does, twice the fiber then bran flakes, and nearly nine times the amount of omega-3s found in salmon.

oh brothers Doggy food

Brothers Complete is a family-owned and operated Pet Industry business – not a wholly-owned subsidiary of some conglomerate with fingers in any number of different pies.  Brothers Pierre and Aaron Earling believe good nutrition is the key to a pet’s health and well-being. As proprietors of The Doggy Store in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, they’ve  recommended foods to their clientele for years. And determined they would formulate a product on their own that would surpass anything currently available.

Brothers Complete is a grain free, white potato free dog food, with white meat, red meat, allergy and fish formulas.

Cici was excited to try out all the yummy foods and treats. Drooling… delicious… she is a big fan and has enjoyed every bite and below are the things I am most happiest about. Feels good to feed her high quality foods and treats.

The Brothers Complete White Meat Formula uses Chicken as its main source of protein, with a good portion of egg and turkey meal included for added animal protein. Because white meat has a low ash content, this formula allows for high absorption of nutrients. The tapioca starch is obtained from the roots of the cassava plant (manihot esculenta) and is a natural source of very low glycemic carbohydrates. The tapioca starch used in Brothers does not contain the additional ingredients (like sugar and milk) normally added to tapioca for human consumption. This low glycemic starch allows Brothers to formulate a food that is closer to a dog’s historic diet which is based predominantly on animal protein, fat, and bone.

Ingredients: Chicken meal, tapioca, turkey meal, dried eggs, sweet potato, peas, chicken fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Menhaden fish meal, dried chicken liver, pumpkin, flaxseed, alfalfa meal, carrots, potassium chloride, salt, choline chloride, blueberries, cranberries, apples, celery, beets, parsley, lettuce, spinach, DL-methionine, L-lysine, taurine, mixed Tocopherols, Rosemary extract, Green tea extract, lecithin, Vitamin A supplement, Vitamin D3 supplement, Vitamin E supplement, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, niacin, folic acid, biotin, manganese sulfate, copper sulfate, calcium pantothenate, thiamine mononitrate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin, L-ascorbyl 2-polyphosphate (source of Vitamin C activity), zinc proteinate, manganese proteinate, copper proteinate, calcium iodate, sodium selenite, cobalt carbonate, Vitamin B12 supplement, Organic branched Inulin/FOS, dried Enterococcus faecium fermentation product, dried Lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation product, dried Lactobacillus casei fermentation product, Amylase (Aspergillus oryzae), Protease (Aspergillus oryzae), Cellulase (Trichoderma reesei), Lactase (Aspergillus oryzae), Hemicellulase (Trichoderma reesei), Lipase (Aspergillus oryzae).

In the last few years, some commercial pet food manufacturers have eliminated or restricted the use of grains but have substituted white potato instead. White potatoes have a higher glycemic index than white sugar (80 to 110 versus sugar at 65) so it puts a strain on the adrenal and pancreatic systems when it spikes the blood sugar and produces a large insulin response every time the dog eats. The high glycemic property of the white potato also feeds the Candida Albicans yeast in the colon which, when overgrown, becomes a fungus whose rhizomes grow into the mucosal lining of the intestine and contribute to a condition known as “leaky gut” which allows matter from the colon, including the Candida Fungus, to get into the blood stream which usually leads to a host of skin conditions and allergy-related problems.

One of the problems with white potatoes, under less than perfect conditions (when too old, sprouting small roots, exposed to warm temperatures above 50 to 65 degrees F for too long, or exposed to light for too long) is that they generate a neurotoxin called solanine which can be extremely toxic. Potatoes rejected from the human food chain, and used in the dog food industry, are all too often a source of excessive solanine in dog food.

Potatoes and grains (due to improper preparation) are also a source of “Lectins” which compromise the effectiveness of the colon and can severly reduce the ability of the cilia to extract necessary minerals and vitamins from the food they eat.

Another possible problem when potatoes are heated to high temperatures is the production of acrylamide which is a recognized carcinogen. For these, and other reasons relating to a dogs health, all of Brothers Complete Formulas are grain and white potato free.

Brothers is the only dry dog food we are aware of that stores their food in air-conditioned storage facilities to maintain the freshness built into it.

Most dog foods spend 3 to 6 months in hot warehouses before reaching the retail outlets. Then they can sit on shelves in pet food stores for several more months before being purchased by the customer.  At Brothers Complete, two days after the food is made it is put in a dark, air-conditioned storage facility where it stays perfectly fresh until it is shipped to  customers or sold in the store. Brothers manufactures only small batches and sell directly to the consumer. There are no middle men.

Cici also got to try the dog biscuits On The Lamb, Country Chicken, Red Meat Raves and the Dehydrated Chicken Breast, (which she scarfed up right away!) and the Dehydrated Canadian Beef Liver, YUM…

Brothers Complete “On The Lamb” dog biscuits are a departure from the “same-old, same-old” – a real taste sensation your pet will get excited about. Made in the USA, these healthful biscuits contain only wholesome real food ingredients, and, of course, are grain and white potato free. “On The Lamb” Dog Biscuits will keep your pet happy as a bunny.

INGREDIENTS: Lamb Meal, Tapioca Starch, Green Peas, Chicken Fat (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Chicken Liver, Sweet Potato.

Bacon, bones and liver, oh my

Cici’s treat fest… the good people at Entirely Pets shared some treats with us for Cici and I to review. What a wonderful grab bag filled with fun surprises.

Entirely Pets offers a whole range of pet products and supplies. And they even offer nifty info such as the Top Ten Places to Travel with your Pets (San Francisco, NY, Boston, Portland, Orlando, Anchorage, yes Alaska, San Diego, Las Vegas, New Orleans and Oahu, yes, Hawaii).

what dog does not love bacon???  these treats hit the right spot for Cici… she ate them with gusto.  Best of all, they are wheat free…

Cici liked the liver treats but the smell, to me, was not totally wonderful.

Liver Bits Training Treats for Dogs by Green Pet Organics are freeze dried training treats that are 100% natural Sourced and Manufactured in the USA. Made with 100% pure beef liver. The process of freeze drying preserves the aroma, full flavor and nutrients of raw beef liver giving a consistent great taste every time. Liver Bits are rich in protein and preservative free. Give as a reward or sprinkled on food for extra flavor. Refrigeration not required.

Cici has had Kongs in the past, but NONE that she liked as much as this one… Maybe because it is larger than the others. Or perhaps it is the shape. She loves playing with it and getting treats out of it.

This KONG grooves gently massages the gums, cleans teeth and helps to reduce plaque while she is playing with it.

Crunchy treats

Clear Conscience Pet LLC has introduced a new line of dog treats designed to meet the needs of stomach-sensitive dogs, as well as appeal to picky pets.

CCP sent us the Ocean Dreams and Peace Berry treats to taste test. Cici definitely prefers the Ocean Dreams since she seems to enjoy kelp. She is not a big fan of fish but prefers meat/protein based treats and food in general. Overall,  I think that the Ginger Yaps would be good for her joints and Pumpkin would be yummy for her tummy, too.  Although I like the Peace Berry ones for her, so far she has not been eating them. Maybe this will change. She has been known to change her mind about treats so I will continue to offer them to her. I think she enjoys the crunchiness of these treats. She is not a big chewer, usually just gulps stuff down, but chewing these treats seems to be something she enjoys. The treats are not too hard, I can break pieces apart and feed her smaller bits which I like. I love the ingredients in these treats. Almost want to eat them myself. Blueberry and Lavender sounds so yummy.

Ingredients:
organic buckwheat flour, honey, organic canola oil, organic kelp, organic chamomile

The new line, Cruncherz Gluten & Grain-Free Dog Bakery, consists of four baked dog treat recipes formulated to be gluten-free and grain-free. The treats are made with a buckwheat flour as the base ingredient, in four organic recipes: Peace Berry with organic blueberry and organic lavender, Ocean Dreams with organic kelp and organic chamomile, Ginger Yaps with organic ginger and organic parsley, and Pumpkin Patch with organic pumpkin and organic sage.

Buckwheat is high in magnesium and has a complex array of amino acids.  Ginger helps aid in digestion and inflammation in the joints.  Chamomile and lavender help to provide a sense of calm, while sage is an herb that has been clinically proven to aid in cognitive function.  Pumpkin is full of fiber & antioxidants, and the blueberries provide a bounty of anthocyanins, while honey plays host to an amazing amount of minerals.  The cold-ocean kelp (from the North Atlantic Ocean) contains dozens of micro-nutrients that land-living beings need to thrive.

The ancient Celtic symbol that you see on our biscuits represents the power of 3 (like in Charmed, the TV series).  Some say it’s the cycle of life (life, death & re-birth), or it represents the Earth being the 3rd planet from the sun, or the foundation of all music, the triad.  3 is a powerful number in life and our 3 spirals on the biscuits represents all of that goodness in a healthy snack for your dog. Made in the USA.

Buckwheat is actually a berry.  In grains there are various parts of the kernel like the germ, endosperm and bran.  Buckwheat contains only the endosperm.  It’s actually related to rhubarb & sorrel, and not related to any cereal grains or grass.  Our buckwheat is milled in a dedicated buckwheat mill making sure that cross-contamination is not an issue.  Buckwheat adopted the “wheat” part of the name simply because of how it is grown, harvested and processed.  Rest assured, there is no wheat or grains in Cruncherz!

Cici has scarfed up the whole bag of Ocean Dreams. Am sure other dogs will enjoy these treats, too. Four paws up !

Chicken lickin good

What is better than a chicken dinner? Baked or fried, roasted or drowning in gravy, side of mashed potatoes and biscuits, chicken dinner is yummy comfort food for humans and also dogs.

The good folks at Spring Naturals asked Cici to do a taste test on their Chicken dinner, kibble for dogs. They sent us a one pound bag and Cici scarfed it up with zest. She is a little fussy about her food sometimes. But I’d say that she gave this food four paws up.

What I like about the food is that it has chicken as the first ingredient and other good ingredients (flax seed, quinoa) that you don’t normally find in dog food. (see the complete list below).  I also like that there are no ingredients from China and that the food is made in the USA and there are no fillers such as corn or soy or wheat.

Spring Naturals prides itself on using only the highest quality ingredients from select suppliers located in the USA, Canada and Western Europe (vitamin/mineral mixes), and New Zealand (lamb). Each Spring Naturals product is made in the USA without any ingredients from China, to give pet parents complete confidence they’re feeding their pet the best possible diet.

The nation’s leading pet nutritionists have developed each of Spring Naturals’ recipes, and only real meat, poultry or fish is used as the #1 ingredient. Unlike other pet foods on the market, Spring Naturals does not contain meat, poultry or fish meals of any kind. Meaning, each Spring Naturals recipe is formulated without high glycemic ingredients like corn, wheat, soy, potato starch or rice.

The Spring Naturals’ line includes dry and canned dinners for dogs in Beef, Chicken, Turkey, Lamb and Salmon. Look for their recipes available in Whole Grain and Grain Free varieties, with an Organic line, too.

Fans of Spring Naturals can follow them at www.facebook.com/springnaturals or on Twitter @springnaturals. To learn more about Spring Naturals and their growing line of dinners and treats visit their website at www.SpringNaturals.com.

Keep on rolling…

well, Cici did not get the memo… all she wanted to do was chew… but she did manage to roll the ball and figured out that when she did the treats would fall out, so she kept on rolling it until they did…except for one of them… she kept at it until that last one came out… she has her priorities…

am thankful, if she can play with a toy for more than two minutes. this one lasted maybe 15 minutes until the treats were all found and eaten.

Although Orbee-Tuff Mazee is made from Planet Dog’s award-winning Orbee-Tuff, it is intended for puzzle play, not chewing.  Its transparent shell makes it fun for dogs and people to watch the treats navigate their way through the maze.

This eco-friendly toy is made in the USA from 100% recycled and recyclable materials.  Orbee-Tuff Mazee is available in one size and two colors:  raspberry and green.  Like all of Planet Dog’s high-quality products, it is 100% guaranteed.  It can be washed by wiping the outside with a damp cloth, filling with hot water and shaking before air drying.

You can purchase online at www.planetdog.com.

The yummy treats that they sent with the toy are the Planet dog Eats chicken and apple…

Planet Dog EATS hit the spots

Cici loves her cookies… and I love giving her treats that are good for her, wheat free and eco friendly.  But Cici can be picky about “healthy” snacks and will sometimes sniff her nose and walk away. But NOT the new Planet Dog EATS. Planet Dog EATS hit just the right spots for me and my polka dot girl. Cici loves the crunchy munchy texture and would eat a whole box in one sitting if I let her do so.

Planet Dog EATS is a line of premium and healthy dog treats made by their new local baking partner, Polka Dog Bakery in Boston, MA. The rough, crunchy surface and composition of the new treats supports daily tartar control. Made in the USA with all-natural ingredients, Planet Dog EATS  are playful bone-shaped treats that easily break into smaller pieces for portion control and for placing inside all sizes of Orbee-Tuff toys.

There are three ways to use Planet Dog EATS:

Praise good behavior… Good dog!

Play: Insert into interactive toys

Perform: They can also be used with Planet Dog’s new On the Go Snack Sack® for “ready-to-reward” ease.

Planet Dog EATS are wheat, corn and soy-free and contain no wheat gluten.

The new line features two flavors: Chicken & Pumpkin Pot Pie and PB & J.

The Chicken & Pumpkin Pot Pie Flavor treats naturally support digestion thanks to the high fiber content found in Pumpkin. It is also a natural remedy for stomach ailments, including constipation and mild diarrhea.  It is packed with beta carotein, high in vitamins C, K and E and an excellent source of potassium, magnesium and iron.  Feeding pumpkin to a dog can help lower their risk of cancer, cataracts and heart disease.  And because it is low in both fat and calories, it is an excellent food substitute for dogs with weight restrictions.

INGREDIENTS: barley flour, rye flour, chicken, pumpkin, canola oil, ginger.

The Chicken & Pumpkin Pot Pie treats also feature Ginger, a perennial herb that has potent anti-inflammatory properties, stimulates digestion and enhances the immune system.  Research has shown that ginger lowers blood cholesterol by reducing cholesterol absorption in the blood and liver.

The PB & J Flavor treats offer powerful antioxidants thanks to real Maine blueberries and peanut butter.  Blueberries can help reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease and digestive problems and they are also a great source of fiber.  The presence of brain stimulating vitamins in blueberries can help keep senior dogs sharper, while copper, zinc and iron help boost and maintain a healthy immune system.  Peanut butter is also loaded with antioxidants as well as protein and basic carbohydrates.  The peanut oil in peanut butter contains omega fatty-acids which help reduce bad cholesterol that can lead to heart attacks and strokes.

INGREDIENTS: barley flour, rye flour, peanut butter, blueberries, cinnamon.

Planet Dog EATS are sold in a recyclable, 12-ounce virgin craft cardboard box. You can buy them online at http://www.planetdog.com, by calling Planet Dog toll-free at 800-381-1516 or at retailers nationwide.

12 days of holiday gifts for your pets

All I want for xmas is …

Fifty-six percent of dog owners say they’ll buy their pets a gift this Christmas, but only 48 percent of cat owners plan a gift.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/08/pet-presents-holiday-season_n_1081502.html

Just over half of American pet owners will buy gifts for their pets this holiday season, and they’ll spend an average of $46 on their animals, with toys and treats topping the list, according to a new AP-Petside.com poll.

Sixty-eight percent of pets getting gifts can look forward to a toy, 45 percent to food or another treat, 8 percent new bedding, 6 percent clothing, 3 percent a leash, collar or harness and 3 percent new grooming products, the poll showed. (Some pets will get more than one gift.)

Sixty-two percent of U.S. households have pets, according to a 2011 survey by the American Pet Products Association (APPA). For many of those furry friends, life is quite good.

2. Toys from Ruff Gear

Cici is not a big toy dog but she loves playing with the square ball… the shape is fun, I stuffed it full of treats, she is always up for food, and she had to wrestle with it to get the treats out.  she also liked the turnup, plays with it too.

3. Toys from Quaker Pet’s Sherpa travel gear and resources for senior dogs (we will be devoting another whole blog post to senior gear so stay tuned)

Quaker Pet’s Sherpa line of travel products offer a great variety of items and several pet-friendly travel resources on their site at http://www.sherpapet.com
They also offer the new Hear Doggy! toys are great for dogs that chew on their toys.  the Hear Doggy “Flatties” (since they don’t have the stuffing)  are available in Rabbit, Skunk and Deer. And these ultrasonic toys come with a squeaker only the dog can hear, so you can enjoy a “Silent Night” while your pup is having a blast!  Tuned to an ultrasonic
range in the 24-28 KHz frequency, each Hear Doggy! squeaker is out of human
hearing range. Visit  Petsmart, Petco or online at www.republicofpaws.com.

4.  Stuff stockings full of your pooch’s favorite bones

5. Earthbath’s Green Tea travel wipes are great stocking stuffers for dogs and cats.

6.  How about a gift for you and your pooch. You can order pet food online and get it delivered right to your door. You can order through AdoptaShelter.com and as an added bonus have the animal rescue/shelter of your choice receive a monetary reward, too.

Or order through Mr. Chewy’s… not all dog food companies are listed yet (for instance, Dr. Harvey’s and Honest Kitchen are not) but many different types of kibble are… and we ordered some Stella and Chewy’s raw dehydrated lamb and Ziwi Peak, both very high quality foods. And the best part is having the products delivered to your home, price discounts are nice, too. They also offer dog treats (Cici’s favorites include Old Mother Hubbard and Zuke’s) and other goodies for cats, too. 8.  Canine Citizen bag for you and your pooch (stay tuned for another blog post to come)

Carries your dog’s stuff (waste bags/treats/ball) and your stuff too…made in the USA

Cici and I got the gray and violet bag and duh, I thought she was supposed to wear it but it is for humans to wear. Seems lightweight even stuffed with your dog’s stuff and yours. The Citizen Canine is primarily a treat bag (for training treats/rewards/bribes) with a poop bag dispenser built in. The treat compartment makes up the top two-thirds of the bag; the top edge of the pouch is stiffened to remain open for easy access, but closes with a drawstring so the treats stay inside otherwise. The treat portion is also big enough to fit a tennis or similar sized ball (or toy) if your buddy is more inspired by fetch than by food.

Poop bags dispense discreetly. One roll of compostable BioBags comes with the bag. There’s a nifty waist strap and a shoulder strap and there is a Guardian Light for nighttime. Another great feature: a front zippered pocket sized to fit an iPhone (room enough for ID/credit card/cash) AND a back zippered pocket sized for keys, change, or a clicker, so you can go out with the Citizen Canine bag and nothing more. $5 from each purchase goes to Old Dog Haven which takes in senior citizen dogs from shelters and either finds them new homes or provides foster homes for them in their twilight years or months.

The rope dog leash is better than recycled, seems sturdy, long lasting and strong, too. http://www.krebsrecycle.com/

9.  Dr. Harvey’s Power Patties

Cici loves her Dr. Harvey’s Power Patties, one of her favorite treats, made from fresh, raw green tripe. The patties are easily digestible, add beneficial Vitamins and Minerals, digestive enzymes and good usable protein and essential fatty acids to a dog’s diet. Tripe is considered one of the most complete foods for carnivores and are very popular in Europe.www.drharveys.com

Cici could probably just eat Power Patties all day and nothing else… Cici’s Power Patty doggie diet… the treats for champions…

10.  A new doggie bed, your choice, there are many options, round, square or rectangle… there are chew proof ones, eco friendly, so many to choose from… I’ve been thinking about getting Cici a mattress from a baby crib

11.  Aromatherapy gift basket for your pet…could include your dog’s favorite (or yours) doggie shampoo, along with a bathing sponge and rubber duck and some aromatherapy sprays/spritzes for your pooch

12.  Bake something special. Pick up one of many dog-treat cookbooks and make a special treat for your pooch that you know is made of top-quality ingredients.

Ace’s Favorite Cheesy Dog Biscuits

1 1/2 cups rice/oat flour
1 1/4 cups grated cheddar cheese
1/4 pound buter
1 clove garlic — crushed
1 pinch salt
1/4 cup Almond Milk — or as needed

Grate the cheese into a bowl and let stand until it reaches room temperature. Cream the cheese with the softened buter, garlic, salt and flour. Add enough milk to form into a ball.

Chill for 1/2 hour. Roll onto floured board. Cut into shapes and bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes or until slightly brown, and firm.

Christmas Carob Mint Dog Cookies
