Cookie monster with spots

my Cici can be pretty picky about her cookies. especially healthy ones. a  month or so ago, we were at a fair nearby Whole Foods and a local gal had a table. She baked her own dog biscuits and was giving out free samples. We chatted and i gave Cici a biscuit to try. She would not eat it. I tried again and still, she was not biting into those peanut butter and something cookies. I figured well, she just does not like peanut butter all that much. She’s more of a meat eating gal. Kind of embarrassing though.

Yesterday, we were at Whole Foods and these kind people there took Cici for a walk and gave her some dog treats of the non-healthy kind. She loved the dog bone shaped cookies while I worried about her eating them. I am currently giving her a special kind of SPIRULINA to counteract all of the bumps, cysts and growths that have recently developed all over her body. A vet wanted to surgically remove them but I prefer a more holistic method, hence the BIOPREP. More about this in a later blog post. Suffice it to say here, Cici has some health issues that we are addressing and that the Bioprep worked a few years ago to eliminate a growth on her toe.

well, NO SUCH PROBLEM with Austin and Kat CBD infused Wellness Dog Biscuits Peanut Butter and Apple. Cici has scarfed up these cookies with all of the enthusiasm of a happy cookie monster doggie. She thinks they are very tasty and I love that they are good for her.  shhhhhh, do not tell her that they are good for her.

cbd5_large

HOW CLEVER to pack a wellness punch into a doggie bite-sized snack. With no eggs, dairy, gluten or preservatives, these cookies offer oatmeal, coconut oil (CICI LOVES COCONUT OIL) and turmeric, a great anti-inflammatory and digestive aid. The organic, cold-pressed CBD Hemp oil is also an anti-inflammatory plus it supplies all of the good Omega 3, 6, 9 oils that doggies need.

And then there is cinnamon, maple, molasses, flax seed, probiotics, along with the oatmeal, apples and peanut butter. What a blend of goodness. No wheat or corn flour either, oat and rice flour and almond meal to hold these yummy for the tummy goodies all together.

https://www.austinandkat.com/pages/ingredients

i have rarely, if ever, seen my dog eat up cookies that were labeled healthy in any way like she has eaten these. She just doesn’t seem to enjoy the others but she is a big fan of Austin and Kat’s cookies and wishes there were an unlimited supply for her to eat.

austinandkatbiscuit

And here’s the kicker, initially, Kat, the creator baker of these sweet things initially made these cookies for her senior doggie, Brady. And Cici is no spring chicken at the ripe old age of 10 herself. Kat also has a puppy named Austin who has enjoyed the health benefits of these snacks, too. Read all about their journey in Maine here.

https://www.austinandkat.com/pages/who-are-we-and-how-it-started

And what are you waiting for, go get your doggies some treats. OK, Halloween is over but that’s ok. Now, it is time for some goodies for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Make great paw stocking stuffers. Be sure to tell Austin and Kat we sent you.

Xmas 2015 gift guide

Well, this year has been the year that we will be glad when it is done and it is over, my year started off with breast cancer, then progressed to blood clots on lungs, bashing my head which led to a concussion, a dear friend of 40 years in hospital (serious operation), several friends dead, no home for me and cici to live in. I have been getting sicker and sicker and sicker and on and on and on and on, that has been my year…

so pardon me, if I am not exactly filled with a lot of holiday cheer…

Here are some great gifts for the pooches and pooch owners:

Eco Dog care

Love the fragrance (all natural essential oil ingredients), even washed my own bad self and hair with it and my hair was all soft and good. Cici does not like bathing so the goodness of this shampoo and wash was wasted on her dog self.

Kinn Kleanbowl–a stainless steel frame which fits over compostable refill bowls. Included was the bowl with several inserts, and a package of extra bowls.   https://kinninc.com/kleanbowl-challenge/

The Kleanbowl Challenge was created to show a pets preference to eat or drink out of the Kinn Kleanbowl when compared to their average pet bowl. The Kleanbowl reduces health risks to pets with the disposable and germ-free Nourish Pet refills which provide a healthy bowl alternative to regular pet bowls that may be unsanitary and filled with bacteria. To set up for the challenge, pet parents fill both the Kinn Kleanbowl as well as their pet’s regular bowl with the same food or water, place the two side by side and let their pet choose which to eat or drink out of! Kleanbowl Challenge pets are not incentivized or influenced to select the Kinn Kleanbowl.

Santa poop bags:  A nice red clip-on-the-leash (collar) carrier for dog poop bags with extra rolls of bags to fit the carrier. The brand is Boty Dogs.

It was a bad spring in my  neighborhood for people NOT picking up after their dog.  We all stood around complaining about how it gives a bad rap to all dog owners.

We got to talking about what we could do and who always picks up.  The
conversation got a little silly and someone suggested Santa Claus
would always pick up, as a result I created the “Picking Up In Good
Company” poop bags with Santa reaching down to a dog who is pooping.  Carla

Barkworthies, yummy elk antler and 8 oz. of sweet potato chips.  “Naturally Healthy, Naturally Happy” All Natural Dog Chews. The sweet potatoes the ONLY ingredient.  The website is www.Barkworthies.com.
Screen Shot 2015-12-17 at 5.57.59 AM

Sweet potatoes are a canine favorite because of their flavor and are:

– packed with vitamin A, B6 and C, plus minerals manganese, iron, potassium, fiber, and zinc

– great for senior dogs (because they help fight the effects of aging) and puppies (because they’re a high source of calcium)

– natural dental aids, since the chewy texture helps remove built-up tartar and plaque

– vegetarian and vegan friendly

A note from the Elmakis Family: “We love our pets and know that wholesome nutrition is essential to their health and happiness. This is why we started Barkworthies.
“We wanted dog lovers like you to have access to the highest quality chews and treats without additives, preservatives or artificial ingredients.
“Today, we’re proud to offer an exciting line of products that are as nutritious as they are delicious. We source our ingredients globally, selecting only the best for your family. When you choose Barkworthies, you can feel confident you’re giving your canine companions what they need to  eat, live and love.”
Pet Safety ID Tags with Links-It
Even the most well trained pet can have a bad day. A frightening noise, natural disaster, car accident or other unexpected event can trigger a dog or cat to run for the hills leaving owners devastated and frantically searching. Unfortunately, while 80 percent of pet owners report that they believe it is either very or extremely important for animals to wear ID tags, only 33 percent report always having ID tags on their pets. While many owners have their pets chipped today, a collar and ID tags are still an important visual signal that a dog or cat is lost from home and not just a stray. Pet IDs with a new technology to help keep them safe.
Many pet owners don¹t keep tags on their animals because it can be hard to get them onto the metal ring without breaking it, pinching a finger or wasting twenty minutes of a day. A new gadget called LINKS-IT solves the problem by eliminating the need for the ring. Made from an ultra-durable polymer, LINKS-IT snaps apart so tags can be slid on and attached to a collar, then snaps and locks in place. LINKS-IT can be used with existing tags or upgraded further with Pawdentify tags which are more durable than metal, virtually silent, and can be custom printed with up to 15 lines of ID information that will never rub or scratch off. They are available in over 100 designs.

The problem with Time Magazine

The problem with Time Magazine and Charlotte Alter

http://time.com/2891180/kfc-and-the-pit-bull-attack-of-a-little-girl/

l. if you know ANYTHING about dogs and specifically about the history of American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, and the other dog BREEDS lumped together and called “pit bulls,” you know that these dogs were bred to be SUPER/EXTRA people friendly so that the handlers would be able to work with them. ALL people aggression was bred OUT of these dogs.  So the first paragraph in this article begins with a lie AKA a MYTH not a FACT.  Apparently, the writer of this article had NO TIME to do any REAL Research nor to interview REAL DOG experts such as James Crosby and Victoria Stilwell.

Screen shot 2014-06-21 at 5.27.53 AM

Pit Bulls are not an aggressive breed of dog.

*According to the American Temperament Testing Association, APBTs have an 85.3% passing rate, compared to a passing rate of 81.9% for all breeds on average.

http://canineaggression.blogspot.com/

This is FANTASTIC, point by point, she tells it like it IS…

http://www.swaylove.org/the-many-problems-with-charlotte-alters-time-article-about-pit-bulls

2. Then this article goes on to quote DISCREDITED time and time and time again pit bull haters and fantasy dwellers such as Colleen Lynn, Merritt Clifton and PETA.  Yes, scratch the surface of these three together and you get nonsensical stats based upon media overreporting of so-called pit bull attacks (if it looks like a dog, call it a pit bull and there you have a headline and ridiculous stats to use to ban pit bulls), fear/paranoia and a call to KILL all the dogs (disguised as more logical sounding breed discrimination aka breed specific euthanization)… of course, they leave OUT that in places like Denver, CO where BSL has been implemented, dog bites have GONE UP because the REAL PROBLEM has NOT been dealt with. Breed is NEVER the problem. Ignorance about Dogs IS the problem.

Oh by the way, PETA kills healthy adoptable dogs and cats and has for years. And their founder, Ingrid Newkirk, was killing animals at a shelter, a job she relished. PETA thinks killing companion animals is a gift to them.

3. oh yes, and speaking about the Michael Vick dogs. 51 dogs who are doing JUST FINE. Eight became therapy dogs, and many are living in homes with children, cats, other dogs, in FAMILIES and shown NO signs of aggression. Not ONE.  These dogs were tortured, traumatized, terrified of humans, unsocialized, kept chained up 24/7 and made to fight tor their LIVES. Yet, once taken away from Vick’s Bad Newz Kennels and given tons of TLC and taught how to be dogs at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, BADRAP, the Monterey SPCA and other places, they’ve thrived.

4. Here is the REAL SCOOP on what causes DOG BITES and ATTACKS according to REAL DOG experts.

http://www.pasadenanow.com/main/opinion-everyone-in-the-community-is-concerned-about-agressive-dogs-and-stopping-dog-bites

Instead of blaming the dogs, how about holding PEOPLE accountable. People are the ones responsible for the abuse, torture, neglect and abandonment of dogs. Humans are the violent ones. Toxic macho masculinity culture teaches young men that they must be TOUGH and FIGHT, MAIM and KILL animals and other creatures. All of the serial killers have a history of hurting and killing animals then move on to human beings.

A few stats:

Every year, more than 2,000 children in the U.S. are killed by their parents or guardians either through abuse or neglect. A child is more than 800 times more likely to be killed by their caretaker than by a Pit Bull.

From 2001 through 2012, 6,410 women were murdered in the United States by an intimate partner using a gun—more than the total number of U.S. troops killed in action during the entirety of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars combined.

…Women in the United States are 11 times more likely to be murdered with a gun than are women in other high income countries… http://americanprogress.org/issues/guns-crime/report/2014/06/18/91998/women-under-the-gun/

Holiday gift guide 2013

The holiday season is truly UPON us, jack frost nipping at our paws… chanukah and thanksgiving arrived around the same time this year.

Will you buy your cat or dog a gift for the holidays? How about a gift for your dog walker, pet sitter, pet rescuer or for that oh so very special pet parent/guardian in your life?

Here are a few suggested gifts for your four legged friends and a few human gifts, too.

1. A happy dog box:   Cici received a box filled with toys and treats and your dog can too. This should be called the happy people and dog box because it lasts for hours/days and makes everyone happy. There was a very nice selection and assortment of treats.

Monster mouth toy… I have never seen her play with a toy for as long as this one. You can hide treats inside the mouth and your dog will enjoy finding them.

Curly chew bully stick

Waste bag container

Jump your bones kangaroo treats

Cloud star hip and joint treats, bacon and cheese, grain free

Woofables gourmet dog cookies

Each monthly box, worth over $30, comes packed with high-quality dog treats, toys, and accessories specially selected for canine health and well-being.

You can find out more info at the link below:

 https://www.happydogbox.com/welcome?ex=52a4b7beba4b426515000a40

2.  Lupine leash and harness. Cici received two sets that consisted of a step-in harness, leash and collar, one 3/4 wide and 1 inch wide. We LOVE THEM except the clasp is hard to open.

Lupine Collars and Leashes has been selling collars since 1991. They have developed a very successful line of woven patterned nylon collars, leashes and harnesses for dogs and cats. Not only are there great designs but the quality of the products is exceptional.   They even offer a lifetime Even if Chewed Guarantee, which really means that they will replace any product, no matter how or when it was damaged–even if chewed!! And no receipt or shipping fee required! In addition, all the products are made in New Hampshire.

Please visit the website (www.lupinepet.com)

3. Bravo raw food

Cici scarfed up the raw turkey and was licking the bowl and the floor clean, which means she really really loved the food. She was begging for more.

I like the ingredients…

The one drawback is that I wish it came in burgers rather than a big huge loaf because I had to defrost the entire thing, and then feed it to her quickly, so 1/4 of the loaf the first day which was too much food in one day… and too much food in a week…

4. Spring natural dog food

http://www.springnaturals.com/

GF-TurkeyBag

Turkey, chickpeas, peas, dried eggs, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), dicalcium phosphate, sun-cured alfalfa, flaxseed, sweet potatoes, natural flavors, salt, spinach, tomato pomace, calcium carbonate, blueberries, cranberries, apricots, carrots, potassium chloride, zinc proteinate, iron proteinate, copper proteinate, manganese proteinate, sodium selenite, calcium iodate, vitamin E supplement, thiamine mononitrate, niacin supplement, calcium pantothenate, biotin, vitamin A supplement, riboflavin supplement, vitamin B12 supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, vitamin D3 supplement, folic acid, chicory root extract, dandelion greens, mixed tocopherols (preservative), rosemary extract, choline chloride.

Every recipe is made in the USA.

5.  Savannah Bee Doggie and Me Balm

Sweetness from your pet deserves sweetness from the hive. All natural beeswax pulls moisture from the air and feeds the skin while providing a protective barrier from the elements. Subtle scents of Clary Sage and Basil are said to calm, soothe, and focus your pet.

Apply Savannah Bee Doggie and Me Balm to your pets nose, paw-pads, dry spots, hotspots, and sores. The easy to use applicator is pet tested and pet owner approved. Give your pet the very best in skin care.

Doggie and Me Balm is supposed to be good for pet owners, too. Use it on dry human elbows, hands, knees and heels. Feels soft and soothing. Doggie and Me Balm is made with 100% all natural ingredients. Has a kind of earthy herbal smell. Comes in a deodorant type looking jar or a candle jar without the wick.

http://www.savannahbee.com/product/Savannah-Bee-Doggie-and-Me-Balm/1113

6. Kurgo Auto barrier

Keep Fido in her place

Screen shot 2013-11-18 at 1.34.55 PM

Cici loves to jump into the driver’s seat when I run into the store. I come back to find you-know-who drooling on the steering wheel and getting the front seat all hairy.

Here is where the Backseat Barrier™ comes in. Super stylish, this cloth barrier attaches to the back of your front seats, creating a soft wall between you and Fido…blocking that little space above your center console. She can still sit and peer through the mesh top; you can even reach back for a scratch if necessary. Most importantly, this barrier helps to keep you distraction free while driving, and keeps your pup safely out of the front of the car.

This products is versatile and simple to install and remove. See for yourself how just a tiny bit of separation makes you a better puppy parent and driver.

  • Protects passengers and cargo from roaming dogs
  • Protects dog from launching into the front during quick stops
  • No need to remove when passengers or cargo are in backseat
  • Front seat stays clean of dog hair
  • Universal fit for most vehicles from a compact to a SUV (does not accommodate 2 door cars or minivans)
  • Simple installation / removal

7. Perfect leash

Similar to the stereotypes people use about pit bulls, when I first saw The Perfect Leash, all plastic, and I thought it was one of those leashes with the retractable line, I was not impressed, but then I Looked Further and actually tried out the leash rather than base my review upon false premises.  I liked the way it kept Cici from pulling me down the street. Unfortunately, Cici lost the Walker leash so I cannot use it anymore.

Designed with both the dog and human in mind, the flexible Perfect Leash makes a great gift for dog owners who want to bring comfort and enjoyment back to their walks.

The Perfect Leash line of pet accessories includes a full-length dog walking leash (the Walker) that suits large and small dogs alike. Made of a proprietary polyurethane formula, the Walker’s flexibility provides an enjoyable walking experience for both the dog and handler. The ergonomically designed, patented, comfort grip handle is designed with adults and children in mind, so every family member can walk the family dog with ease, confidence and comfort.  Unlike cloth leashes, the Perfect Leash is odor resistant and easy to clean.

31sFeQc2wTL._SY355_

The Walker is the only full-stretch dog leash on the market! Its high flex capability provides an enjoyable walking experience for both dog and handler. The ergonomically designed, patented, comfort grip handle is designed with adults and children in mind, so every family member can walk your dog with ease, confidence and comfort. Available in Black, Blue, Red, Yellow, Blaze Orange, JD Green, Safety Green, Military Green, Tan, Pink and Purple.

Beautiful Old Dogs

This beautifully illustrated book features 44 color photographs of senior dogs taken by the late photographer Garry Gross and edited by David Tabatsky. An incredible tribute to the souls of elderly canines.

In BEAUTIFUL OLD DOGS edited by David Tabatsky, photographs by Garry Gross (St. Martin’s Press; on sale 11/5) the relationship between humans and dogs are explored in over 44 stunning color photographs from Gross and through short essays and poems from a range of writers, including Dean Koontz, Anna Quindlen, Doris Day and Marlo Thomas.

In BEAUTIFUL OLD DOGS, Gross showcases the beauty and soul of every dog he photographed, though it was the older, more senior dogs that most fascinated him. After retiring from the world of fashion photography, Gross established Dog Trainers of New York, a highly successful dog training business that has helped thousands of dogs enjoy better lives with their families and shortly thereafter decided to combine his two passions: photography and dogs.

Shake

Shake is a heartwarming collection of sixty-one silly dogs caught in mid-shake. This graphic photo book by award-winning internally recognized photographer Carli Davidson shows how funny dogs look caught with: hair wild, eyes darting, ears and jowls flopping every which way. You’ve never seen dogs looking like this.

A few years ago Carli Davidson was a volunteer at dog shelters. In 2010, she began photographing the rescue dogs in mid-motion, capturing their movements at a thirteen-thousandth of a second. She called the project Shake and posted a few pictures on Facebook—they quickly went viral, and she was covered on Huffington Post, The New York Times, and Vanity Fair Italy, just to name a few. In a 90-day period her site spiked to 8.5 million views.

One hundred adorable models posed for the book. Sixty-one of them, including Scooby the Rottweiler, Greta the Shi Tzu, Twinkie the Jack Russell Terrier, and the famous, mixed-breed Ramen Noodle were selected. Two photographs of each dog are featured side-by-side in the book to capture the motion of their shakes. One photo shows the dog beginning to turn; the other shows its wild hair and fabulous facial expression mid-twist. Many of the dogs are shaking off water and the high quality of the photo shows the droplets as well.

9. Do you brush your dog’s teeth? Nah. Don’t worry, you’re not alone. More than 60% of dog owners never brush their dog’s teeth. The main reason is that it’s just too difficult.

To help improve the state of canine oral hygiene Kissable has launched two new ‘Brushless’ Dental Solutions to make dental care easy for the owner and painless for the pooch. Instant Fresh Breath Foam adheres to teeth to gently clean, sanitize and loosen plaque build-up without using a toothbrush!  Oral Care Water Additive is a super-easy-to-administer liquid. Just add a capful to your pet’s water. No toothbrush required.

Kissable-Nov-ad_05

Instant Fresh Breath Foam

This all natural breath foamer combines the deodorizing powers of baking soda and peppermint with the anti-bacterial power of aloe vera. All promote excellent oral cleanliness which results in fresher breath. The sweet-tasting minty foam immediately adheres to teeth to gently clean, sanitize and loosen plaque build-up without using a toothbrush| 8oz

Oral Care Water Additive

Helps loosen plaque build-up and freshens breath while your pet drinks from the water bowl. Just add a capful to your pet’s drinking water when you refill the bowl and the ingredients in the product do the rest. When the pet drinks from their water bowl, the liquid will pass over the teeth and gums leaving behind ingredients that promote fresh breath and oral cleanliness| 16oz

I put the foam into her mouth. She gave me clenched teeth mouth, which was perfect, i moved her lip and put the foam on her teeth, used my fingers and rubbed it on.  i give her water with her food so not sure how to make that work … smells nice and pepperminty… Cici in general has pretty good breath for a dog, because I feed her high quality foods and treats, no kibble… raw foods and still it is nice to be able to give your dog a sweet smelling minty fresh mouth.

For dads who are camera buffs, why not get dad an extra special video camera to take great shots of his doggie pal to post on his blog, Facebook friends, send to friends and loved ones?  You could also book a session with a professional pet photographer for the two of them to capture special memories. Create a photobook filled with images of the two of them.

You could also create your very own photo puzzle from a favorite photo… and/or win a photo puzzle creator from Piczzle here…

Book a massage for Dad and his dog, side-by-side on the table, with full treatment. Get a barber and dog groomer to give them both haircuts. After they’re both looking their best, take the Father’s Day guests of honor out for lunch or dinner at their favorite pet friendly restaurant.

Reserve transportation and a stay for Dad and his best pal at a pet friendly beach town perhaps San Luis Obispo, Carmel, Mendocino, Half Moon Bay, Huntington or Newport Beach. Surf, swimming, coastal hikes and other activities included. Or plan a pet-friendly excursion to dad’s favorite fishing hole that allows dogs. Fetch dad some new fishing gear, and his faithful sidekick ges a new ball, frisbee or rubber ducky to play catch.

Supplies you’ll need for the excursion include traveling food and water dishes, a blanket to lie on and an umbrella to help shade from the sun. Include a new lead and stake for dogs that tend to wander, and a towel…gift your special duo their favorite meal. Pack it up in a picnic basket and let them enjoy a pleasant lunch..

Plan a barbeque for Father’s Day… Be sure Fido has a kiddie pool to splash in when it gets too hot… and since dad loves to cook/grill… the animal rescue site has some adorable doggie related gifts including these canine oven mitts…there are also canine decorated aprons and other goodies for the culinary  minded dad.

Dad loves to read about adventures, training and inspiring stories about his best friend, right. Why not get him some doggie books about relationships of man and his best friend that will whet his attitude for having more fun with Fido… Books like the tale of Wallace, the world disc champion (who just passed his ninth month beyond the death

sentence he was given … doctors told Wallace’s guardians that he had life threatening cancer and Wallace was supposed to be over the Rainbow Bridge by now… but NOT Wallace !!!)

The Chet and Bernie mystery series by Spencer Quinn share the relationship of a working dog and his detective guardian (fiction) in a fun canine caper way is another good selection of the theme (man and dog).  You could start with the first in the series, Dog On It or jump to the last The Sound and the Furry, or get them all.  Really fun reads.

A Doggone Tune-up

One of the best reasons to take your favorite pooch with you on vacation (even if it is a home staycation) for the Easter or Passover holidays or Spring Break is for the guaranteed exercise you will get with your canine buddy at your side. Here are a few of the fun attractions that you can enjoy with Fido or Fluffy that will give you both a good workout.

Cici loves to zoom around the park every day… zoom zoom zoom… girl dogs just LOVE to run…born to zoom…

1. Tiptoe through the tulips at Mendocino’s  Botanical Gardens

Between the tulips and other flowers, (over 150 varieties), Fido will enjoy a nice stroll with you to the beach. Well-mannered dogs on leashes are always welcome and enjoy free admission.

2. Romp amongst the waves and practice the dog paddle together at Carmel by the sea’s Carmel Town Beach. There are always plenty of dogs splashing, swimming, zooming and chasing one another.  Plus the walk into and out of the beach will get all of your endorphins flowing.

3 Go kayaking …  You can paddle up Big River in a canoe from Catch a Canoe & Bicycles, Too, located at Highway 1 & Comptche-Ukiah Rd, Mendocino, 707-937-0273.

Jughandle State Reserve features a 2½-mile self-guided nature trail called the Ecological Staircase. Starting by the ocean, this trail goes inland up a series of five ancient terraces formed by waves, glacier, and tectonic activity.  The trail features an amazing variety of trees, since the ecologies of the different terraces vary widely.

Three miles south of Fort Bragg. Turn west off Highway One into the well-marked parking area. 707-937-5804
