Stand Up for Pibbles

Angels come in all forms. And many pibble (pit bull) owners would say that their canine is an angel come to earth to teach humans all about love, compassion and kindness.

One of these angel canines just happens to be named Angel. Her guardian, actress and comedian Rebecca Corry seeks to create safe and humane communities for humans and animals and to raise awareness about the abuse and discrimination against pit bull terriers and discuss solutions for this growing problem.

Some of Rebecca’s guest star appearances include: “The King of Queens,” “The Bernie Mac Show,” “Rules Of Engagement,” “Rizzoli and Isles,” as well as appearances on “The Wayne Brady Show,” NBC’s “Late Friday,” “Comics Unleashed,” E’s 101 series,” Vh1s “Best Week Ever,” Comedy Central’s “Premium Blend” and her own 1/2 hour Comedy Central Presents 1/2 hour special.

On May 16th 2013 the HUFFINGTON POST announced Corry’s plan to march on Washington  DC http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/16/one-million-pibble-march_n_3280839.html?1368716232 and more recently she discussed her thoughts on President Barack Obama coming out against BSL and joining the fight for Pit Bulls http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/20/obama-breed-specific-legislation_n_3785911.html?utm_hp_ref=dc

Rebecca Corry’s pit bull terrier, Angel was found roaming the streets of Los Angeles as a victim of horrific abuse. Her body was riddled with scars and acid burns. She has damaged knees and her ears have been shorn, likely with scissors. It is believed that the dog was overbred and used as a bait dog during dog fights.

Through a live, nationwide comedy show with performers such as Bill Burr, Kaley Cuoco and Whitney Cummings, Rebecca’s Stand Up for Pits Foundation raises money to positively advocate and educate about the true nature of Pibbles (kind, loving, sweet, gentle).

Angel and Rebecca are also hoping to speak to President Obama in Washington DC on May 3, 2014 at the One Million Pibble March she is organizing on the west lawn at the Capitol from 12:30 – 2:00 pm.

Screen shot 2014-03-29 at 12.18.49 PM

“My goal is to create safe and humane communities for humans and pets by advocating, educating and offering solutions,” said One Million PIBBLE March organizer Rebecca Corry.  “This is not just an animal issue; it is a social issue that affects us all. It is proven people who commit violent acts against animals will likely — and most often times do go on to — commit crimes against humanity.  The targeting of pit bull terriers is an obvious reflection of a broken society, but one that can be fixed.  The PIBBLE March provides us a national platform to be the voice of millions of voiceless victims, and we will be heard. Abuse and discrimination can no longer be tolerated.”

The event is attracting attendees from all over the United States as well as Canada, England and Germany. With more than 5,000 registered attendees to date and growing

Roo Yori, pet parent to Hector (a former dog of Michael Vick’s Bad Newz Kennels) and Wallace, world champion disc dog, will be one of the guest speakers along with numerous celebrities, sports figures, and comedians.

“I think any time you have a large group of people standing up for dogs that need help, it’s a good thing. Dogs need people to be their voice when it comes to laws and policies, so I’m honored to be chosen as one of the speakers to try and make positive change. I hope I do them proud,” said Roo.

  •     Leah Brewer, owner of the first-ever hero Pibble, Elle the Hero Dog of 2013

While Angel and some of the speaker’s dogs will be in attendance, the event is focused on human voices for their dogs. Other dogs will not be allowed at the event. Here’s why:

“Dogs are not allowed at the march because, simply put, dogs cannot change laws, the U.S. Capitol is not a dog park and this is not an opportunity to make it one. This is an opportunity for humans to be their voice. Having dogs there provides no impact and offers no solutions to ending discrimination and abuse. In addition, putting any dog of any breed in a stressful situation while trying to advocate for them is reckless and quite honestly, stupid. This event is happening for two very specific reasons:  to end discrimination and abuse. The only way that can happen is if humans attend. I can understand wanting to bring your dog, but the United States Capitol West Lawn will be respected.”

“The hardest part about saving dogs is humans.” — Rebecca Corry

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rebecca-corry/no-dogs_b_4567976.html

You know that as far as I am concerned, our society is completely backwards in the way it treats victims of most crimes. Too many times the rapists, abusers and real criminals get off scot free and the victims are blamed. Blaming pit bulls is like blaming black people for slavery, the Jews for the Holocaust, and/or victims of abuse and rape for the depraved acts of their abusers and rapists. This HAS to change.

If dogs could talk,  I am 1,000% sure that if given the choice between fighting other dogs and living a desperate lonely terrifying life on chains, being overbred, being thrown into pit rings as bait dogs, and ultimately dying a horrific bloody death, that the dogs would choose instead to be someone’s beloved pet, safe inside the home, a family member, with a comfortable life. And they also LOVE staying at pet friendly hotels.

Which makes me think of my darling Cici. Yesterday i came out to the living room where her crate is. She usually rests in it. But instead, I found her lounging on the couch, all spread out, comfortable in her habitat. When I came near, she wagged her tail, rolled onto her back and showed me her belly for rubbing. Gee, what a life she has !  A truly pampered Polka Dot Princess.  And she deserves it just as all pets do.

Do NOT kill these dogs!

Please share, lend your voice and tell Santa Ana supervisors in Orange County, California not to destroy ANY dog fighting dogs. They are having a meeting in a few days, January 28, and want to just kill all the dogs that have been seized from dog fighting rings. Write them off as dangerous, vicious and be done with the dogs. THIS IS NOT OK.

All of the former Michael Vick dogs are living role models and testimony to the idea that ALL of these dogs deserve a Second Chance at LIFE. It is not the dogs fault that they have been forced to fight other dogs. Penalize the dog fighters not the dogs.

Eight of the former MV dogs are therapy dogs. Many are living in happy, loving homes with kids, other dogs and cats, too thanks to BadRap, Best Friends, Monterey SPCA and all the others that saved their lives and gave them a second chance.
Dog fighting is a CRIME. Punish the dog fighters not their victims…

 from Best Friends:

from BadRap:

ACTION ALERT:

Dear Friends of Jonny Justice, Audie, Hector, Handsome Dan & Company. Remember when you helped us send hundreds of copies of ‘The Lost Dogs’ to the Obamas in 2011 to help educate our President about the plight of pit bulls? You can bet you helped seed the anti-BSL statement that came out of the White House during Obama’s second term, and we LOVE you for that. Creative, positive, political action WORKS.

Now we need you again. Do you have eight dollars to spare? The Orange County (CA) Board of Supervisors would like to destroy dogs that come from cruelty (dog fighting) cases in their county. We don’t know why. It could be that they aren’t aware that all dogs are individuals and survivors of terrible backgrounds defy the odds every single day. Please consider sending one or more of the board members a softcover copy of ‘Saving Audie’ – as a way to demonstrate what may be lost if they move forward with their no-mercy policy. If you order from Amazon today or tomorrow, they will get rec’v it in time for their meeting & vote on Jan 28. If you live in Orange County – please speak up. The dogs need you now! Thank you!

Senior dogs need Grrrreat sendoffs

In with the new, out with the old… well, while we are on the subject of old and new, let’s talk about older dogs.

Senior dogs. (Do senior cats count, too?) Of course they do silly. If you know me, you know that. Once upon a time, I was living in a place in the LA area and a neighbor cat was skinny, too skinny and was going around asking for food. It seemed that the cat was homeless. And I fed the cat every day. In a short time, I found out from other neighbors that they were feeding the cat, too. Yet, the cat remained skinnier than skinny. Bones and fur.

It was suggested to me that I maybe should take the cat to a vet to see what was up and I did. I found a vet who took a few looks and tests and delivered a heartfelt decision. The cat had late stage cancer. Nothing could be done to put the cat out of her suffering. There were expensive treatments but in the end none of it would prolong her quality of life. I cir, the vet cried and suggested that I take the cat to the Pasadena SPCA. Thinking back, do not know why the vet didn’t do the euthanization right there but maybe she would have had to charge me for it and I would not have been able to pay. Plus, I was not the owner.

Nevertheless, crying all the way, I proceeded to the shelter. There, they let me spend a few minutes alone with the cat to say goodbye. I did and did a prayerful meditation seeing the cat going up into the light and being greeted by friends, and surprising some of my relatives. Then, I handed the cat over to the technicians and they put her softly to sleep.

I cried all the way home. And a few days later, I ran into a woman neighbor who i got was the cat’s owner. She asked about the cat and I told her what happened. She cried softly and thanked me over and over again for doing what she could not do for the cat. Apparently, her daughter had a baby and they did not know what to do with this cat that they had for 18 years. So they threw the cat outside to fend for itself. An indoor loved cat thrown out onto the mean streets. That poor cat suffered for a year or two for no reason other than her owner did not know what to do. Imagine.

These kinds of scenarios makes me crazy. How could people possibly be so cruel. And yet it happens every day with once beloved pets. The family moves, an elderly person dies or the family has a financial loss. Or maybe they just do not want to take care of a senior pet any longer or do not know what to do so they toss the pet out with the garbage.

Thankfully, there are organizations like Peace of Mind Dog Rescue in Pacific Grove who think that these senior dogs are valuable, deserve much more than being tossed out onto the streets at the end of their lives.

http://www.peaceofminddogrescue.org/bauercenter.html

https://celiasue.com/2013/08/20/caring-for-seniors/

POMDR rescues senior dogs, fosters them, and finds them forever homes for their golden years. They also help senior folks like me with their pets, getting them to the vet on time, assisting at times with a helping paw donation for vet care, and/or with much needed pet food or other items (collars, cones, kennels and more). POMDR is a 5013c and raises funds in numerous ways. One of the charitable organizations that helps to fund POMDR’s great work for homeless senior dog s is the Grey Muzzle Organization .

According to their website, “The Grey Muzzle Organization improves the lives of at-risk senior dogs by providing funding and resources to animal shelters, rescue organizations, sanctuaries, and other non-profit groups nationwide. We are not a shelter or rescue. Rather Grey Muzzle funds programs such as hospice care, senior dog adoption, medical screening, and other special programs to help old dogs at animal welfare organizations across the country.”

Grey Muzzle funding supports the following senior dog programs nationwide.

  • Adoptable dogs medical care programs
  • Hospice and long-term foster care programs
  • Seniors for Seniors adoption programs
  • Keeping dogs with their owners programs
  • Senior therapy dog programs
  • Animal food programs
  • Orthopedic dog beds for at-risk senior dogs in shelters nationwide

logo

Thankfully folks like POMDR and Grey Muzzle care about senior pets and take care of them in proper fashion. As Cici ages (she is now 7), I want to make sure that she is properly taken care of in her golden years, too. It is good to provide a will and instructions for others to know how you wish your beloved pets to be taken care of after your demise and / or if you become bedridden and/or unable to care for them any longer. It is a relief to me to know that I can count on POMDR and Grey Muzzle to care if / when I no longer am able.

Now, here is what YOU can do to make a difference in the lives of senior dogs, too.

My fellow pet blogger, Edie Jarolim recently decided it was time to bid adieu to her beloved senior dog Frankie. And she made sure that he had a special bone voyage sendoff. She had provided Frankie with the best of care for him throughout his life, administering insulin shots twice daily, needed for his diabetes. And so at the end of his life, she wanted to do something really wonderful for him. So she fed him ALL of his favorite foods that had not been able to eat during his last 30 days.

Now, Edie wants every senior dog to have a loving send-off like Frankie did. She started “Frankie’s Fund” via Grey Muzzle.

Frankie-for-blog-004Frankie-for-blog-004

Every contribution that is made to them via Frankie’s Fund will go to help hospice care costs. Grey Muzzle volunteers lovingly take in dogs that may not have long to live and provides them with palliative care and a loving home.

All donations will make a difference. Grey Muzzle is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) charity so contributions are tax deductible. When donating, please enter “Frankie’s Fund” in the slot under “I want my donation to be dedicated.”

Thank you.  And if you can do a donation today, it will be a good way to say out with the old 2013 and in with the new 2014.

Happy New Year !

Les Miserables Animal Ads

Thanks to my facebook friend/fellow blogger Edie Jarolim for her inspiration for this blog post…

If, like me, you have been at home watching TV movies or programs and in between there comes that music and you cringe, grab the remote and / or want to throw something at the TV set. The song used to be Sarah McLachlan “In the Arms of an Angel.” A beautiful song now used to promote cruelty. The ASPCA has changed its tune to “You are so Beautiful,” another great song.  But Cici wonders how humans can be so hypocritcal and cruel. She is a pit bull and many of her kind have been abused and killed in shelters supported by the ASPCA.  Plus, Cici spent her puppy time in doggie jail for no other reason than how she looks.

ASPCA

we will remember you, will you remember the animals?

ASPCA

Your ads are so ugly to me

Your ads are so ugly to me

Can’t you see

You’re ads are everything we don’t want

Your ads are everything we don’t need

Your ads are so ugly to me

Your ads are completely misleading… they don’t tell the tales about the way you treat pets and allow too many healthy pets to die. Your ads are simply abominable. NO ONE wants to adopt these pets you say. Yet it is YOUR policies that keep pets from being adopted and living happy lives. Sane people want to see RESULTS, the SUCCESSES, HAPPY pets. The Subaru ads are a great example of fun ads that make people want to adopt pets. Your ads COULD inspire millions of people to adopt pets. But oh no, you focus on the misery.  ASPCA is part of the problem NOT the solution. And they could CHANGE and be part of the SOLUTION IF THEY WANTED TO BE…

You know that your animal ads are not good if they make people want to barf, change the channel or kill themselves, hah… you know your ads ARE great if they INSPIRE people to adopt shelter pets!!!

Check out Edie Jarolim’s blog post about positive pet adoption videos that actually uplift, make people laugh and want to adopt pets from shelters.

http://willmydoghateme.com/animal-welfare/pet-adoption-videos-that-wont-make-you-want-to-kill-yourself-a-pet-net-special

In the ASPCA ads, they show off a parade of horribly abused animals and basically suggest that the ASPCA is the pet’s savior. The message is that if you send the ASPCA MONEY, they will rescue the animals and give them new homes. But what they don’t tell folks is they have ONE shelter, that the local SPCA’s are not at all funded by them, and that they allow rampant abuse of animals  (and should know better). The founder of the ASPCA, Henry Bergh, is rolling in his grave. His legacy has been disgraced.

The ASPCA Allows Dogs to Starve

“Last year, the ASPCA had total revenues which were just shy of $150 million dollars. That not only made it the richest SPCA in the country, it is one of the richest 200 charities in the nation. Yet, it adopts out less animals than some rescue groups and small shelters. It fights progressive shelter reform legislation that would save lives. It defends corrupt shelters who neglect and then needlessly kill animals. It fights No Kill efforts nationwide. Rather than treat them, it sends animals, including kittens, to the local pound to be killed. Its animal hospital has a history of abuse. And now an expose by a local news station has uncovered that its humane law enforcement division is allowing abused animals to die all over New York City.”

Pet Prisoners in your shelters

(sung to the tune of the Look Down work song)

Look down, look down

Don’t look ’em in the eye

Look down, look down,

You’re here until you die

The sun is strong

It’s hot as hell below

Look down, look down,

There’s not long to go

I’ve done no wrong!

Sweet Jesus hear my prayer!

Look down, look down,

Sweet Jesus doesn’t care

I know she’ll adopt,

I know that she’ll be true!

Look down, look down,

They’ve all forgotten you

When I get free ya won’t see me

Here for dust!

Look down, look down

Don’t look ’em in the eye

How long O Lord

Before I die?

Look down, look down,

You’ll always be a slave

Look down, look down,

You’re standing in your grave

Oreo and Oreo’s Law

“Meet Oreo. Oreo was a one-year-old dog who was thrown off the roof of a six-floor Brooklyn apartment building in 2009. Oreo suffered two broken legs and a fractured rib. Several of the neighbors in the building reported having heard the sound of her being beaten. The ASPCA nursed her back to health and arrested the perpetrator. They also dubbed her the “miracle dog” and fundraised off her plight. But the miracle was short lived.

“According to ASPCA President Ed Sayres, when Oreo recovered from her injuries, she started to show signs of aggression. After the money was counted and safely deposited into ASPCA bank accounts, Sayres made the decision to kill her. (Although there were videos taken of Oreo, the ASPCA has refused to release them and the only public documentation of Oreo is photographs of ASPCA employees hugging her—their own faces inches from hers—which do not demonstrate any aggression). The New York Times reported the story the day before Oreo’s scheduled execution. The reaction among animal lovers was strong and swift.

“If it was true that Oreo was still traumatized and untrusting, who could blame her? She needed time. Although the ASPCA could have cared for Oreo as long as it took to get her to trust again, Sayres refused. But others came forward to offer what the ASPCA would not: time and space to learn that not all humans are abusers.”

http://www.nathanwinograd.com/?p=11127

http://www.nathanwinograd.com/?p=7390

“The ASPCA co-opts meaningful shelter reform legislation largely by copying it but then including weasel words like substituting “may” for “shall”. So instead of requiringshelters to work with outside rescue groups, it simply says that they can if they choose to. Other meaningful reforms, like requiring shelters to scan for microchips, post found animals online, and make an effort to match lost and found animals are scuttled by including an exception if the shelter does not find it “practicable” to do so. Well, given the choice, they won’t find it practicable, which is why we need legislation that mandates it.”

http://johnsibley.com/2012/02/11/quick-kill-bill-the-aspca-fights-for-more-shelter-killing/

“I used to live near the ASPCA’s home turf of New York City, and I’ve known the ugly reality hidden behind the cute calendars for many years—since the early-mid 1980s, to be more precise, when I first heard the parable of the accountant and the veterinarian*, which I recounted in a previous article about the ASPCA’s opposition to Oreo’s Law.

The ASPCA has long been a nice comfortable killing machine.”

Cherry, Jonny, and Wallace, oh my…

WALLACE is not technically a Vicktory-dog (former M. Vick dog), his brother Hector is though, and Wallace is a star in his own right… The book about Wallace by Jim Gorant (author of The Lost Dogs book) is a winner. Sadly, Wallace is very ill with cancer. Please see Prayers for Wallace and Angus blog post.   thanks.

“The founder and executive director of Dogs Deserve Better, a chained dog rescue that operates where Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick once owned a dog-fighting compound, is facing animal abuse charges, said Surry County Chief Animal Control Officer Tracy Terry.

“Tamira Thayne, who opened the Good Newz Rehab Center for Chained and Penned Dogs in June 2011, was charged with one count of inadequate care of animals, a Class 4 misdemeanor, on Aug. 23, said Terry. A hearing on that charge is scheduled for Sept. 25 in Surry General District Court.”

As a pet owner, below are some reasons you may need prepaid legal insurance (times when you may need an attorney):

Do you know your rights as a pet owner in your state?

Perhaps you are moving and need to know your rights in the new state.

What if your neighbor’s pet gets into your yard and causes havoc or hurts your pets?

You are involved in a car accident and It wasn’t your fault and your pet got hurt. You call the [provider] attorney who advises you to send a copy of the ticket, photos of the accident, and scan a diagram of what happened. Then your lawyer appears in court on your behalf, and at the hearing the magistrate dismisses the case and the other driver pays for the medical expenses for your pet.

Then you get a letter from your car insurance company who wants to double or triple your rates. You call the [provider] attorney. She sends a letter to the insurance company requesting removal of the surcharge. The insurance company drops the surcharges.

disputes with your landlord about your pets (is it legal for your landlord to evict you because of your dogs?) Your landlord refuses to return the cleaning deposit because of alleged damages done by your pet, that your pet did not do.

what happens if your dog bites the mail person, a neighbor, a child, someone at the dog park or UPS driver?

Maybe you’ve been arrested or detained at a protest or while rescuing an animal and need a lawyer asap

You have a car and get a ticket, a Legal Shield lawyer may go to the DMV for you and stand on line for you … Why would anyone go to Traffic Court without an Attorney? The number one reason, it costs too much but not with Legal Shield.

You want to get your will done and updated every year and want to name your pet as beneficiary or make sure your pet is taken care of after your demise

An illness or medical condition happens and someone is trying to take your pets away from you. Advanced arrangements can be made to ensure care of the pet while you are hospitalized or incapacitated. You can designate caretakers for your pet ahead of time.  Find a friend or relative willing to take your animal and give it a good home when you get ill or die. The matter should be discussed in advance with the potential caretaker to make sure the animal will be cared for appropriately. The person who will receive an animal as the result of a bequest in a Will should understand that he or she becomes the animal’s owner and, as such, has all the rights and responsibilities of ownership. It is best to name alternate caretakers in the Will in case the first-named person is unable or unwilling to take the animal when the time comes.

Providing Funds for Pet Care

Under the laws of all 50 states, a pet owner cannot leave any part of his or her estate outright to an animal. However, the owner may leave a sum of money to the person designated to care for the pet, along with a request (not a direction) that the money be used for the pet’s care. It is important for the pet owner to select a caretaker he/she trusts and who will be devoted to the pet, because the caretaker has no legal obligation under the above provision to use the money for the purpose specified.

You should leave only a reasonable amount of money for the care of any pet. A large sum of money may prompt relatives to challenge the Will and the court may invalidate the bequest for pet care. The attorney may want to include an “in terrorem” clause in the pet owner’s Will to reduce the chance of a challenge to the Will. This clause provides that if a person unsuccessfully challenges a provision in the Will, he or she cannot then receive property under any provision of the Will.

Designating a Shelter or Charitable Organization to Care for Pets

If no friend or relative can be found to take the pet, you should look for a charitable NO KILL shelter or organization whose function is to care for or place companion animals. A humane society or shelter might agree to accept the animal along with a cash bequest to cover expenses.

The charity should agree to take care of the animal for its life or find an adoptive home for the animal. Before selecting a shelter, find out what kind of care your pet will receive at the shelter (for example, an animal should not have to stay for more than a short period in a cage). If the organization is directed to find an adoptive home for the companion animal in its care, the pet owner should obtain detailed information about the adoption procedure.

Establishing a Pet Trust

Under the law of most states, an animal can be the beneficiary of a trust created to care for the animal.  The statute enables persons to create trusts for their animals, and such trusts can be enforced in the courts. The trust can be (i) a testamentary trust, created under a Will, to take effect upon the death of the pet owner.

Providing Funds for Pet Care During Transitional Period

A provision which should be included in all Wills where a pet is involved, is one allowing the Executor to use estate funds to care for the animal for the period before the animal goes to the new home designated by the pet owner. The Will should state that the costs of food, veterinary care, transportation and other expenses incurred by the Executor in caring for the decedent’s pet is to be paid from the estate as an estate administration expense, whether or not the expenses are deductible for estate tax purposes

Arranging For Friends/Relatives To Provide Short-Term Care

You should try to find a friend or relative who is willing to take care for his/her pet during these periods. You should leave word, preferably in writing, at home and with a neighbor, or with the building management and/or superintendent for the friend or relative to be notified. You should arrange for access to his/her home to permit the care and feeding of the pet during such short -term periods. If an apartment is involved, the owner should consider leaving a key with the superintendent or a neighbor. If there is a relative or friend in the area, the owner should consider providing that individual with a key and with written permission to the building management to enter the apartment in the event of the death or hospitalization of the pet owner.

Arranging for a Shelter or Charitable Organization to Provide Short-Term Care

There may be an animal shelter or charitable organization with which arrangements can be made to care for a pet in the event of the death or hospitalization of the pet owner. Should the owner make such arrangements, shelter personnel would need written instructions addressed to the superintendent or building management and the key to permit them access. Similarly, the pet owner should leave written instructions in his/her home and with a relative or friend to notify the shelter (if a shelter is chosen) or the individual who has agreed to take care of the pet during this period.

Emergency Instructions

Once the pet owner has decided upon such arrangements for the short-term care and feeding of the pet in the event of the pet owner’s hospitalization or death, the owner should carry a copy of the instructions as part of his/her identification papers in the event of sudden hospitalization or death due to an accident or illness.

You have a small business. You have legal documents such as a contract for your pet business that you want to have written by or looked at by a lawyer to make sure it covers your liability and anything else you might need

Perhaps you need a lawyer to write a halt, cease and desist or other letter for you

You are sued for slander?

What happens if you are traveling in another state/country and something happens with your pet?

What if your dog walker/pet sitter hurts, neglects or abandons your pet?

You are wrongly accused of a crime

You are buying or selling a car or real estate

You are going through a divorce and want sole custody of your pet

Your pet gets ill from pet treats or pet food

Your neighbor’s dog barks for hours every night. what are your rights?

Another dog bites you, a family member. or your dog, what are your rights? Can you get the dog owner to pay for medical and vet expenses?  Negotiations Between You and the Dog Owner are Required. You need an attorney.

A dog owner’s liability for injuries from a dog bite is spelled out in a Florida law, which states: “The owner of any dog that causes a dog bite to any person … in a public place, or lawfully on or in a private place, including the property of the owner of the dog, is liable for damages suffered by persons bitten, regardless of the former viciousness of the dog or the owners’ knowledge of such viciousness.” However, if the person who was bitten did something that caused the dog bite, the liability of the owner may be reduced.

What would happen if your Pit Bull (or other breed dog deemed dangerous) was taken into custody and quarantined until the authorities decided the fate of the dog?  If you are dealing with BSL, YOU NEED A LAWYER…

Pit Bull Paparrazzi

There are pro pit bull lovers and those against. Unfortunately for innocent dogs like Lennox and Wicca and too many more dogs, some of the folks who hate pit bulls and/or are afraid of them do not know what they are talking about but have a public platform to express their opinions pretending to be facts (newspaper editors and reporters). Everyone is entitled to their opinion AND when they state opinions as if they are FACTS it is misleading and causes mass hysteria which leads to abuse and death to innocent dogs. It’s just that plain and simple.

As a newspaper reporter and editor, I know that “whatever bleeds leads” and headline stories. Most people know that is because scary stories (as well as sex scandals) sell newspapers.  Karen Delise in The Pit Bull Placebo effectively outlines the media’s role in shaping people’s perceptions of dogs as well as known factors that produce ‘dangerous dogs’.  Many people do not know, recognize or print these factors in newspapers and magazines. What they too often do is perpetuate myths (locking jaw, unpredictable dogs, born to maul and other such FICTION). To some, truth may be in the eye of the reader but OBJECTIVE FACTS are not the same as opinions nor myths. Objective facts are credible and are backed up by experts and studies whereas myths are refuted and opinions are anyone’s thoughts or beliefs which cannot be substantiated. Gravity is FACT while the moon is made of swiss cheese is a myth.

My personal observation of these anti pit bull CRAZIES are that they are mad, angry, fearful people who bash dogs and sane loving people for the sake of THEIR OWN ISSUES. Instead of dealing with their own STUFF, they project onto dogs what is INSIDE of themselves.

When Mother Teresa was once asked why she dedicated her life to the poor and needy of Calcutta, she is said to have replied: ”Because I realized that I had a Hitler within me and decided to turn around and do good.”

Barbara Kay and the other anti pit bull spreaders of lies, myths and fiction would do well to heed that sage advice.

From Karen Delise’s Pit Bull Placebo,  The Pit Bull Paparrazzi traffic in myths and pseudoscience.

“In 1987, over 800 newspaper articles were printed in which “Pit bulls” were headlined.

Over a decade later, the media is unrelenting:

• 2004, over 900 newspaper articles were printed in which “Pit bulls” were in the headline.

• In 2005, there were an incredible 1,700+ newspaper articles which headlined the words, “Pit bull.”

• In 2006, the media continues to exploit the Pit bull with an unprecedented 2,800+ newspaper articles vying for their readers’ attention with the words “Pit bull” in the headlines.”

A recent case of anti pit bull hate mongering was published in the National Post, a Canadian newspaper (that appears to be of the same ilk as the New York Post known for its scandalous headlines and articles filled with myths) with a blaring headline about how (ALL) Pit Bulls are Bred to Maul (people and should be banned/killed).

Anyone who knows breed history knows that true fighting dogs do not show any aggression towards humans whatsoever. Human aggression was in fact considered a major fault, so if a dog showed any human aggression it would be destroyed and the line would not be bred from anymore. Handlers were in the pit with the dogs during a fight and would not be so if they thought there was any danger.

So if it said Pit Bulls are Bred to Give Kisses to People While Shopping at the Mall, I would agree. Because pit bulls LOVE to lick, live to lick… Cici barked at a couple the other day because they walked by her without saying hello to her, the nerve. She LOVES people as do her canine brethren. They were bred to LOVE people. And cannot hold their Licker. Sometimes she will spend 20 minutes licking me. One time, I saw her lick another dog at a dog park for at least an hour. Pit Bulls are Bred to Lick. Yes, they are. This clerk at Trader Joe’s and I were talking about our dogs the other day. She has a German Shepherd she said who is a love bug but very protective of her. Hah, I said, well, my dog has to wag her tail and say hello to EVERYONE and show them her belly. The mailmen, UPS, FedEx, anyone who comes to the door, people that walk by her at the park down the street. She is very gentle with kids, LOVES men and people in wheelchairs. A few times lately, she sat nicely waiting for people to come over and say hello and/or give her a treat. I did not train her to do any of this. She came this way. I would not know how to train her to do this. She was born to LOVE. She waits patiently outside my roommate’s door in the morning so she can say hello to him and show him her belly. Every morning. She was born this way.

Barbara Kay says:

Fact: When it comes to dog bites, it very often is the breed. Each year, about one PB in 100,000 kills someone, compared with one non-PB in about 10 million. About one adopted PB in 30,000 kills or disfigures someone after passing behavioral screening. (Other dangerous breeds, like Rottweilers and Huskies do plenty of damage too; more on them another time).”

http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2012/08/01/barbara-kay-on-ontarios-pit-bull-ban-pit-bulls-are-bred-to-maul/

I refute her so-called opinions pretending to be facts with these actual FACTS…

There are no incidents to date of a spayed/neutered indoor family pit bull ever having killed anyone.

…[S]ince 1975, dogs belonging to more than 30 breeds have been responsible for fatal attacks on people, including Dachshunds, a Yorkshire Terrier, and a Labrador Retriever.” (It’s also key to point out that you are more likely to be killed by lightening than a dog, and dog bites are at historic lows.)

http://stubbydog.org/2012/05/pit-bulls-by-the-numbers/

But she is just demonizing dogs for the sake of entertainment and to keep dogs banned. I wrote to the opinionator Barbara Kay to refute her hysteria derived opinions disguised as facts (all unsubstantiated of course but she has her refuted sources)… to let her know that I did not appreciate that articles like hers are the reason millions of innocent dogs are killed, abused and attacked.

What I received in return was insults and name calling… First, she called Karen Delise a nut case. Then she called me a nazi. And finally, said that she has noticed that all pit bull owners/lovers have lower IQ’s than normal people. This was in response to my Stated and Linked FACTS.

Really… well, when you have NO Defense for your outrageous LIES and MYTHS, then what else can you do but attack by calling people names and insult them and then say it is not personal?

According to Barbara KKK (the Queen of the Kill K9s Koalition), it is also pit bulls fault because too many dogs are in shelters and get killed. Hello. A majority of the dogs in shelters ARE pit bulls and get killed because they ARE pit bull types/mixes.

Kay states:

According to Merritt Clifton, for decades a statistics-driven investigative reporter in this field, PBs accounted for 930,000 shelter killings in 2011, 60% of the U.S. total, even though they represent 3.3% of the dog population. PBs also account for 51% of dogs impounded for attacking other animals. Each year, from 33% to 45% of the total U.S. PB population enters an animal shelter, “a phenomenon never seen with any other dog breed.” Clifton says there are few accidental PB births, “because nothing resembling a pit bull occurs in nature.”

WHAT???

“First, Clifton’s statistics incorporate “press accounts” of dog attacks which are notoriously inaccurate.  The press is in no way qualified to make breed determinations, nor are Animal Control, veterinarians, or law enforcement.  In addition, with the press calling any and all dogs that can pass for a “pit bull” a “pit bull” (which is a type, not a breed), what will victims of dog attacks and witnesses most likely say the “breed” in question was?  And as Clifton himself notes, his statistics are “by no means a complete list of fatal and otherwise serious dog attacks,” which means that there is little one could accurately conclude from Clifton’s “statistics.”

http://www.nopitbullbans.com/debunking-merritt-clifton/

Then Kay goes on,

“Denialists all quote each other’s baseless statements in an endless loop, and parrot the same Manchurian-candidates mantras: “My PB may lick you to death”; “all dogs bite”; “It’s the owner, not the breed”; “the pit bull was the most popular family pet in America.”

These are all myths. Dog-sales statistics show that PBs were never that popular in America; and they were never bred for anything but fighting.”

Apparently, she never heard of Petey the Little Rascal Dog. And Stubby. And so many other famous pit bulls.  Nor has she ever heard facts stated by world renowned dog experts and dog trainers such as Victoria Stilwell, Cesar Millan, Justin Silver and Jim Crosby who have and/or have worked with pit bulls, fearful and dangerous dogs for YEARS. Victoria and Cesar offered to rehome both Lennox and Wicca at their own expense. And Jim Crosby works with truly dangerous dogs every day and has for the past 25 years.

“Let’s look at the “qualifications” of the only evaluation that the BCC or Court accepted.  The BCC “evaluator” is, admittedly, a former police Constable.  So am I, except that instead of being a Constable, the equivalent here in the US to a base Patrolman, I retired as a Lieutenant and Watch Commander, the UK equivalent of a full Inspector with the Metropolitan Police.  I am also a certified Behavior Consultant (he has no such training), have been certified as a Professional Dog Trainer, and am trained and certified as a behavior evaluator by several organizations-and he is not.  I have further, over the years, worked with, trained, and evaluated what are probably over a thousand Pit Bulls and other breeds prohibited in the UK, certainly more than the BCC evaluator.

“…And frankly, if their evaluator thinks that Lennox was the “most dangerous dog” he had ever seen,-please come meet some of the guys I have handled and evaluated after they have killed humans.  I have seen more dangerous Cocker Spaniels.”

http://canineaggression.blogspot.com/2012/07/lennox-gloves-come-off.html

In regards to Wicca, accused in Montreal of two bite incidents, Crosby said:

“Jim Crosby, retired police lieutenant and canine dog bite investigator from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office in Jacksonville, Florida, who has invaluable experience with dangerous dog issues, has contacted the shelter and city officials on Thursday to offer his assistance. http://www.northcountrygazette.org/2011/10/24/the_wrong_way/

“Crosby says he finds it hard to believe they want to kill this dog over what, even if it WAS a bite has to be rated minor- what I would term a low Level 3 incident on the Dunbar bite assessment scale-and based on the one photo I am not persuaded it was caused by teeth.”

http://www.northcountrygazette.org/2012/07/26/death_order/

Wicca saved her owner’s life, was far from a vicious dog and was killed by the city of Montreal because she was a pit bull.

“Pit bulls were the dog of choice for famous personages such as Helen Keller, Laura Ingalls Wilder (of Little House on the Prairie fame), and President Theodore Roosevelt.

Meanwhile, pit bulls were chosen as mascots by the Buster Brown shoe company and by the United States itself, which featured pit bulls on American propaganda posters for each of the first two world wars.

“Fittingly, the first dog decorated with medals by the armed forces was one Sgt. Stubby. In the first world war, Sgt. Stubby not only survived being twice wounded in combat, but captured a German spy and saved his entire platoon from a poison gas attack.

“In 1903, an American Pit Bull Terrier named Bud became the first dog to travel across the entire US via car. He accompanied the first humans to make a non-stop journey cross country by automobile, but his fame eclipsed theirs, as newspapers in cities across America featured a goggle-wearing Bud.”

http://www.pitbulls.org/article/brief-history-american-pit-bull-terrier

Delise, “…for over half a century in between, 1920 to 1970, millions of Bulldogs, Bull Terriers, American Pit Bull Terriers,  American Staffordshire Terriers and all their mixed breed cousins served Americans well in every possible capacity and circumstance.

Kay goes on…

“All dogs bite, but few do serious damage on a statistically consistent basis. Some PBs may lick you; others may maul you. Nobody can predict their behaviour — not even celebrated dog whisperer César Milan, as a recent YouTubed episode rather horrifyingly demonstrated. The fact is, even responsible owners cannot prevent PB attacks. Most killer PBs were raised in loving homes and seemed sweet — until they attacked.”

What Cesar Millan says about BSL :

http://bydogpeople.com/2011/07/11/cesar-millan-pit-bull-ban/

She reiterates the myth that pit bulls are unpredictable and more likely to bite people than other dogs.

That is fiction. There are known factors that contribute to dogs of all breeds biting. If the dog is male, not neutered, kept chained or roams loose in a pack, these are ALL known factors in dog bites/attacks. Dogs of ALL breeds. Also a female dog usually chained with a litter of newborn puppies, guard dogs, abused dogs, sick dogs, neglected dogs, starved dogs and unsocialized dogs.

And all dogs, before they do bite, gives warning signs.

Dogs who are the top biters are daschunds.

Pit bulls bite harder than other dogs. When Dr. Brady Barr did a comparative bite-pressure study among pits, German shepherds and Rottweiler for National Geographic, pits came in last.

And Pits will “turn’’ on you because they’re hard-wired to kill. The former Vick dogs disprove that.

Back to Kay’s fantasies disguised as facts.

“Semyonova says, “There is no temperament test or behaviour test that can predict or assure that a pit bull won’t suddenly do what it was bred to do.” PB “impulsive aggression” is a genetically carried trait and strongly heritable. By seven months, those cuddly pups usually start attacking other animals without provocation. Small children are at particular risk for harm because they are easy prey.”

NO dog of ANY BREED should EVER be left alone with a child. NEVER EVER.

And this assertion has been PROVEN INCORRECT.

“Yes, abused, starved, endlessly-chained or desperately cornered dogs of other breeds will fight, but not to the death like PBs. Once PBs attack (without warning, unlike other breeds), with their characteristic grab-and-shake death lock, they are so pain-insensitive they are almost impossible to dislodge.”

Semyonova’s book claims that the pit bull has a chemical imbalance in its brain that causes it to “snap”,  a different chemical make up in the brain says Semyonova, however, doesn’t she does NOT cite ANY sources proving this. No names of researches, no date of research, no nothing.

There’s no scientific data to back that up. They’ve actually studied pit bulls and found that the pit bull skull is no different than any other dog. There’s no locking mechanism. Just as there is no chemical imbalance causing them to snap.

Dr. Lehr Brisbin of the University of Georgia wrote:

“The few studies which have been conducted of the structure of the skulls, mandibles and teeth of pit bulls show that, in proportion to their size, their jaw structure and thus its inferred functional morphology, is no different than that of any breed of dog. There is absolutely no evidence for the existence of any kind of “locking mechanism” unique to the structure of the jaw and/or teeth of the American Pit Bull Terrier.”

More creative fiction from Kay, as she cites Clifton’s fantasy stats.

Here are the true facts:

Dog attacks: 33    …(and just 15 in 2011)

With a US population of 311,591,917 (July 2011) and that year’s 15 dog attack fatalities, your chances of dying in a dog attack (from all breeds combined) is 1 in 20,772,794….almost 21 MILLION! One in over *30 MILLION* from a Pit-Bull or Pit-Mix.

https://www.facebook.com/notes/john-w-rosa/pit-bull-attacks-you-may-as-well-plan-to-retire-on-lottery-winnings/467491906604123

Then Kay says, “Bans work.”

well, no, they do not work in the real world.

BSL does not eliminate dog bite incidents…

http://nationalcanineresearchcouncil.com/media-center/

Dog-bite related fatalities are so extremely rare that not even a state could ban enough dogs to insure that they had prevented even one. (Consider: in Denver, Colorado, after they banned pit bull dogs in 1989, they had another dog bite related fatality in the Denver area, involving another type of dog.)

Spain, Italy, Great Britain and the Netherlands have all reported that their breed specific regulations have not produced a reduction in dog bite incidents. The Toronto Humane Society surveyed health departments throughout the province of Ontario, and reported that the breed ban enacted in 2005 had not produced a reduction in dog bites. In Winnipeg, Manitoba, after the city banned one type of dog, dog bites actually rose, just involving other types of dogs. Reports from Denver, Colorado, Miami-Dade, Florida, Prince George’s County, Maryland, and Omaha, Nebraska all tell the same story.

After a few exchanges with her, it became clear to me that Kay writes the trash she calls objective journalism, fair and balanced, my dog’s rear end, so that she can fight with sane people and call them names.  How mature and professional, NOT.

Apparently Kay bases her opinions pretending to be facts on these type of statistics which are stats based upon news media headlines NOT real dog bite statistics

http://bslnews.org/2012/01/24/the-real-dog-bite-statistics-plus-media-myths-colleen-lynn-exposed/

real dog bite statistics can be found here

http://www.nationalcanineresearchcouncil.com

from The Pit Bull Placebo by Karen Delise

“…for over half a century in between, 1920 to 1970, millions of Bulldogs, Bull Terriers, American Pit Bull Terriers,  American Staffordshire Terriers and all their mixed breed cousins served Americans well in every possible capacity and circumstance.

Perception of dogs as killers is skewed

“…Fact: In 2002 over 420 children were killed as the direct result of physical abuse by a parent or a guardian (this number does not include death from neglect).

Fact: The majority of physical abuse deaths of children were inflicted by fathers or father-type men (stepfathers, live-in boyfriends).

Conclusion: Therefore, fathers are statistically the most dangerous of all persons.

The media vastly over-reports Pit bull attacks as compared to other dog attacks (and does not usually point out the other dogs breeds in headline)…

Another reporter thinks Kay’s opinions are skewed to the dark side.
“Two days ago, Barbara Kay, a columnist at the National Post, blasted pit bulls and spoke out in favor of breed specific legislation to keep these dogs out of Ontario.

Not only is she in favor of keeping the Ontario, Canada ban in effect, but she is adamant in her belief that “pit bulls are bred to maul.”

A damning, blanket statement.

http://www.examiner.com/article/national-post-columnist-blasts-pit-bulls

Kay would never read this, about real dogs, real heroes because they do not fit in with her fantasy world of Demon Dogs. Too bad.
