Woof For Equality

On Saturday, more than two million women and men marched in more than 600 cities around the world.  They marched in DC, 500,000, LA, 750,000, NYC and more. Many of the women have never protested before and it was a historic protest of an inauguration ever.

“Women are marching because our children deserve a secretary of education that cares about education.”

“Women are marching because our family and friends deserve healthcare. Did you know that before the ACA, newborns in the NICU would hit their lifetime caps on health insurance coverage. That’s right, Babies who had never felt the sun on their skin could no longer get health insurance.”

“Women are marching because domestic violence crisis centers and after school programs deserve funding.”

“Women are marching because we deserve clean air, clean water, and national parks.”

“Women are marching because we believe the children protected by the DREAM act deserve to be here and they deserve to live with their parents, not in orphanages and foster homes.”

“And most of all, women are marching because we have the right to. The right to protest and speak out against our government is the first amendment. That’s right, #1! It is one of our most fundamental American rights.”

Here are some of the pooches who took part in the peaceful rallies for equality for women, health care, and more.

It is the pits and not the pits

did it all begin with dogs?

the rancor, recrimination, disdain, and discrimination,

small versus large dogs.

breed discrimination.

breed bans.

talk to any owner of a German Shepherd, Rottweiler, or pit bull (which is not a breed, a bunch of bully breeds including American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrirer, Pit Bull Terrier, and others) are lumped together and called pit bulls, and they will tell you about how their dog(s) are vilified, demonized, shunned, and/or called mean, vicious and/or killer dogs, no matter the dog.

is it any wonder then now we have right here in America:

red vs blue

GOP vs Democrats

conservatives vs liberals

Bernie supporters versus Hillary

men versus women

white Christian evangelicals aka white supremacists against everyone

heterosexuals against LGBT folks

white people versus nonwhite people

rich versus poor and middle class

1% versus 99%

housed versus unhoused

child molesters and rapists versus transgendered

environmentalists aka tree huggers versus climate change deniers and oil companies, big pharma and nuke, coal, industries

vegetarians and vegans versus meat eaters

war mongers versus pacifists

north versus south

didn’t we fight this war before, I seem to recall something…

people divided

a nation in crisis

fighting each other and the whole world

when will we learn the lessons and stop blaming one another, pointing fingers, spewing hatred?

it is not the dogs, not the people…

a nation gone mad accusing one another for our problems

we are NOT NOT NOT going to solve anything with slurs, epithets, walls and bans

can we just agree to disagree and MOVEO N?????

on a different note, Cici and I are traveling and met with Howard Epstein in LA for lunch yesterday. It was fun and yummy and we grew up in the same neighborhood in NYC, went to the same high school at different times.

Walking dogs across USA

Kait & John Seyal, along with their two dogs Max & Grace, walked across the US from DE to CA. They walked to promote pet therapy and animal rescue. Along the way, they stopped at hospitals, nursing homes, veteran facilities, children’s homes and anywhere else where a dog is needed. They relied on the kindness of strangers to get through this journey with giving them a place to stay, food, company, etc.

How inspiring!

America’s babysitters

There is something seriously wrong with a country that once revered pit bulls and trusted them with their children. Pit bulls were nanny dogs. They were once a symbol of our strength and loyalty, and now our country says these same dogs are vicious, mean and dangerous and wants to ban them??? Something WRONG with this 2011 America… Seriously wrong.  Maybe America has become mean and cruel in the way it treats its animals now. America needs to Rediscover America’s DOGS and stop banning, abusing, and euthanizing them. For every pit bull dog (and other animals) that we hurt, we lose a little piece of our own soul.

For every animal abuser that gets off with a slap on the wrist, no jail time or a $500 fine and community service, such as the case with Schmiegel the dog, like Patrick, he was starved for three weeks without food nor water intentionally by his owner. That is the sentence his abuser received a $500 fine and 10 days of community service. There is something twisted, sick and just plain wrong with someone who would starve a dog almost to death and there is something wrong with a system that allows this person to get off with such a small consequence to her actions.  She was talking about getting another dog in five years. Seriously?

Remember When?

Spanky and Petey (Little Rascals)

and if you humans don’t start learning how to play nice, we pit bulls are gonna get you and lick you, says Cici….

the race card…

Update: Thank you to Donna Reynolds from BadRap for this blog post… my thoughts exactly, well, great minds think alike…  🙂

a worthy White House literacy project… heh heh heh

This is my 500th blog post, a milestone. It is sad to see people’s attitudes on this subject. Am sick of talking about vick, too. Yet when I hear racist remarks, apathy and cynical, nuthing gonna change so I ain’t gotta do nuthin attitudes, it is clear that more needs to be said on the topic. Can’t we please have an adult conversation and not just shove this underneath the rug? I believe in the power of prayer to change everything/everyone, and that does not mean God has blinders on, nor deaf, dumb and stupid, either.

An adult respects other people’s opinions not their own. An adult agrees to disagree with others without calling them names and bringing up stereotypical images. An adult acts and responds correctly to situations despite emotions and feelings about the subject matter.

Am I always an adult? No. I realized last night that having been abused myself is part of why I am so incensed about this issue. I spent my childhood in a state of terror, cowering, so I identify with the plight of the underdogs. I feel their pain and fright. And people’s pasts and emotions do not dismiss the valid points. Let’s just keep it civil. Do unto others as you want them to do unto you. Give others credit and let them have their opinions without resorting to rants, please.

It is clear that our country is still divided racially and racism on both sides rears its ugly head again over Obama as president and over Michael Vick. Ugh.

people, can we have a civilized conversation without resorting to racist claims on both sides? Some black Americans are using the race card and so are some white people but this is not a black/white issue… and I can understand why some black Americans think this is just a new excuse to hate them, hate successful black men, because of the tragic history of American racism and how dogs were used against them. That is a valid point.

and this is what I wrote to Ms Charing Ball.

I just read your piece about vick and I appreciated what you wrote and have a better understanding of how and why some black Americans are responding the way they are to this dog doo. This country is still divided racially and lots of stupid racist people are chiming in, like tucker carlson. I for one have tried to steer the conversation away from that b.s. by asking people to concentrate on the healing of the dogs instead of their hatred of black people.

Please don’t throw the babies out with the bath water!

I love dogs, hate fu fu dogs, and make fun of people who dress up their dogs and get them married, for goodness sake too. I laughed hard at that stuff white people like blog post.

Also, I have a pit bull mix that I rescued from the hands of a homicidal maniac and met three of the former vick dogs and am still haunted by the terror in those sad sad eyes. For a week or more after meeting them, i would cry every time my happy go lucky trusting dog would meet strangers. Those dogs will never be a dog like her again although they’ve come a long way.

I am writing to clarify a couple of key points, so maybe you can get beyond the color of Michael Vick’s skin and see why people of ALL colors are still outraged over him.

1. Vick used his own dog as a bait dog to be savaged. He is only banned from having a dog until 2012, he should NEVER be able to have a dog again.

2. if / when you read the lost dogs book by jim gorant, you will learn that vick got a plea deal, never admitted any personal wrong doing and he never got charged with animal cruelty. The book outlines precisely how they found the blood on his hands. He killed dogs for fun and profit. That is not just a mere mistake.

The ASPCA and law enforcement know that there is a well documented correlation between people who abuse animals go on to abuse people.

3. Redemption begins with admitting what you did wrong and remorse for what you did. Vick has never done that. He has said repeatedly he’d still be fighting dogs (and killing them brutally) if he had not been caught. He wants forgiveness without admitting what he did. It’s all a big PR show for money. we resent that football players of all colors get away with murder and all that matters is that they play ball.

4. Many people in this country are still outraged about bush/cheney getting away with murder and mayhem, and blame them for the economy, rightly so. many hate those two white guys. and anyone sane of mind, knows sarah palin is nuts, don’t get me started.

5. This guy has good points about how it’s ok in this country to get away with stuff if you are rich and famous.

and from the people in the trenches taking care of the dogs, Best Friends, who took in 22 of the dogs.

Thanks for listening.

am glad this guy is finally free, but it took 30 years, wow… hint: he is black…

now this stuff (see link below) that people say about President Obama is about racism. I agree with Michael Moore that some people became unglued when he became president and so they keep coming up with all kinds of crazy reasons to hate him.

what do you think???

so long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, goodbye

I have been receiving doozies of comments lately.

one person must have dug through all the almost five hundred blog posts I’ve written here and found the one out of two posts I wrote that mentions for a brief sentence anything political to exclaim that by posting that lil ol sentence that I lose half my readers.

say what?

Yesterday, I had more readers than I have had for awhile.  Why? Because I have been expressing my opinion about Obama. It ain’t rocket science. last time I looked, this was still America, although we’ve taken a lot of hits against being the home of the free… (tsa patdowns, tax cuts for the wealthy, republicans/faux news on the rampage against everything decent and good in our country, seniors/boomers becoming the new poor and homeless, etc).

news media ie, newspapers, bloggers, magazines, TV and radio folk, beware.

are you kidding me?

Rachel Maddow, Keith Olbernmann, Faux News, and many other news people constantly write and say stuff on their blogs that is political and get hundreds if not thousands of comments from readers on all sides of the equation.  duh…

A blog is to express opinions. That is my right to do here. And I do express my opinions.

If you do not like what I say, speak up and express yourself. If you do not agree, speak up.

I will agree to disagree with you.  We can all be adults here. Children and adolescents have hissy fits and refuse to talk to people who don’t agree 100% with them.  Or go sulk in the corner.

The way it works in the real world, here, in reality is that people have all sorts of opinions about all kinds of different topics. If you insulate yourself, isolate yourself, and only want to hang out with people who shut out the rest of the world like you do, that’s your choice and I am OK with that.

But don’t tell me what to do and act all holier than thou about how you love dogs and would like to support my work, but heavens to Betsy, I said ONE wrong thing and that forever banishes me from your kingdom.

Alas, so long, farewell, chus (or however you spell it, it’s German expression for bye bye, auf Wiedersehen), goodbye… see ya…

all next year !!!

may all your New Year’s eve’s be merry and bright…  and keep your pets safe.

Happy New Year 2011, the year of HOPE…
