Family vacation in the UK

Guest blog post by Ariane Franke

We are a large family of two adults, two children, two dogs and two cats and if we can do things as a family then we will usually do so.  One thing we have yet to achieve is to holiday as a family.  The cats have never really seemed that bothered about being left behind in a luxury cattery but the dogs have never enjoyed the kennels and we have had many a sulking dog post holiday.  We decided last year to attempt a proper family holiday (minus the cats who just didn’t care).

Our first decision was should we go abroad or stay more local in the UK.  While obtaining a pet passport seemed relatively simple, we decided to try and keep costs down and stay in the UK.  We thought we would look at going down towards Cornwall way having never been there before but knowing it was beautiful.  Our friends had told us that it was an ideal place to go with children and dogs, plenty of long walks and lots of fresh air to wear the lot of them out.

We looked at staying in a suitable pet hotel and did find a few chains online as well as small private hotels that welcomed dogs for a small refundable deposit and a small daily/weekly charge.   Whilst the hotels all looked lovely we decided to stay in a dog friendly cottage which meant that we could come and go as we pleased and not worry about disturbing other guests with our loud family.

When packing for the holiday I hadn’t anticipated how many extra things I would need when including dogs on the holiday.  I had to pack a week’s supply of dog food, suitable dog bedding and covers for their furniture in case my dogs got a bit over comfy on it, their favorite toys and even their water and food bowls in case the cottage did not have any to lend us.  I also had to source a suitable dog bed to go in the boot of the car and a dog gate in the car to ensure they did not leap over the back seats on the journey down.

Despite the added stress and baggage I can safely say it was a great holiday, one which was enjoyed by everyone and one we would take again.  Children and dogs were completely exhausted by the end of every day and the journey home was the quietest and sleepiest one I have ever known.

Doggie dreams

Pet dreams… ever wonder what your dog dreams about when they are woofing, flailing, kicking legs and wagging their tails in their sleep? well, I know one thing that Cici often dreams about, wide awake and in her sleep, is comfort. High priority for my dog.

Which is why Cici likes the Pet Dream memory foam dog bed. She is switching off between the bed and her chair and her crate… she likes variety… options… choices… being the polka dot princess that she is… why limit herself to just one one, right. She has been doing her circling and scratching number on the bed. She gotta find just the right spot for her royal comfort. Such a funny dog. Interesting to watch her go round and round and round. (Until it gets annoying, settle down already, dog).

It seems that the bed is quite up to to the task of handling her circling business just fine, for dogs like Cici, polka dot princesses so that is a plus. And the bed seem so comfy I thought about sleeping on it myself. But Cici would not let me.

Good to know that…

The Ortho-Bliss memory foam dog beds are:

filled with 100% memory foam clusters and absolutely no fillers or egg crate foam.  Only memory foam “open cell” structure can mold to your pet’s body heat and weight, relieving painful pressure points, muscle pain and improving circulation.

  • Memory foam molds to body heat & weight, relieving pressure points & improving circulation: recommended for older dogs, large dogs & arthritic dogs.
  • Ortho Bliss memory foam dog beds are clinically proven to provide greater support for your dog than egg crate foam & are filled with 100% eco-friendly memory foam clusters.
  • The only thing cheap about this memory foam bed is its price: our exclusive patent pending interior channels keeps the fill in place.
  • High quality pet bed cover is machine washable comes in sizes Small to XX Large and four colors (we got the L for a 55 pound dog and Burgundy)…Giving your dog an orthopedic dog bed can ease pain from arthritis, hip dysplasia and old age, which is why they are great for large dogs and senior dogs. In fact, memory foam dog beds are highly recommended by veterinarians for their high level of support.

There is a size guide so you know what size is best for your dog.

Plus, what is cool is this is a woman owned company. And they offer a comprehensive array of beds including memory foam beds, crate bedding sets, and some pretty cool dog toys that look like donuts and ice cream.

best of all, we love this…

Newsflash:  I have a Pit Bull and have been attacked more times than I can possibly count.  Perfect strangers are frequently mauled as are friends, family members, and other dogs.  Dangerous animal, indeed.

Attacked by kisses and mauled by kindheartedness and love, that is.

Pepper  (I’m a Pepper, you’re a Pepper, we’re a Pepper)…

where is your dog sleeping tonight???

hide and seek

Cici thought it would be fun to sleep in a new way this morning. I think she is bored. And it started raining again.  Good thing we’re probably going to the Bay Area Pet Expo tomorrow, leaving today just for the heck of it.  Can you tell where she is?

oh, there she is, peekaboo, hiding underneath her dog bed on the chair !  🙂

now she is massacre-ing the chair pillow, maybe she suddenly hates beds and pillows, won’t take her to bed, bath and beyond anymore 🙂

don’t have to be concerned with her sleeping with me anymore, she has revolted and been sleeping alone in her chair, is my dog mad at me?  Maybe Cici doesn’t love me anymore 😦  she hasn’t been very cuddly either. Maybe it’s that time of the year for her to go kwackers.  It is supposed to rain like a flood and/or snow today and tomorrow.

Help !

girlfriends, go to the Ritz !

The Ritz Carleton Half Moon Bay has 52 suites that allow pets, $125 pet fee (nonreturnable), and the pet amenities include a dog bed, bowls and treats… it is a beautiful hotel with exquisite service.

Check-in was a breeze and includes a glass of wine (which I declined) but it was a very nice touch. The valet guy was very sweet and a dog lover and did not mind being enthusiastically greeted by Cici…. The staff are super friendly towards both humans and dogs.

RCHMB Beach and Resort LR

Our lovely suite had a firepit outside on a patio overlooking the golf course and gorgeous beach view… with a telescope inside the living room part of the suite, so you could see near and far as well as a fireplace, two bathrooms (water closets as they say in Europe), jacuzzi tub, as well as shower, and was beautifully decorated.

There was an amazing chocolate sculpture on the desk, which I thought was art and made out of candle wax until I tasted it and found out it was the delicious blissful stuff I love. My tummy was not up to par but it was an amazing gift along with a bottle of wine.

Pets are not allowed in the lobby, on the golf course (except off hours), and food places.

This is a gorgeous place for a Girlfriends Getaway… grab your gal pals and go get spa treatments, massages, go shopping, fine wining and dining, relax by the pool, play with your pooch(es), play golf and more.

free weekly giveaway ends tomorrow… yurts anyone?

ok, you have one more day, the last few days no one else has submitted any entries… which makes us think that we should give people a shorter amount of time… for the next giveaway, you will have a day or two… Internet time is faster than real time…   we have some wonderful new surprises and resources coming up…

yesterday, while writing about yurts and affordable and alternative housing for my blog for the Seattle newspaper, I came across two cute photos (below)… a dog in a yurt and a couple of llamas in a yurt…since I don’t yet know how to post photos there, and since they are animals, thought I’d post them here for you to enjoy… and if you don’t know and want to know what a yurt is, visit my other blog below (hint: a yurt is a round or circular or dome housing structure used by nomads in Mongolia, Russia and even in the USA)…  am thinking that they will come in handy on some land for the K9 healing center, some yurts for the animals, a yurt for myself, for staff and guests… yurts are in campgrounds across America, there are yurt bed and breakfast inns, and yurts have endured extreme weather such as snow, rain, and heat… they are extremely affordable… portable… and easy to put up, good for emergency relief shelter, nomads, dog kennels, dog weddings, mobile offices, writer’s retreat, artists studio, dog camps, doggie daycare and doggie education centers.  Women writers with dogs retreat and healing center…

If anyone would like to donate land, yurts, expertise and other resources for the doggie healing and education center, please let me know.  we will need to set up a 5013c non-profit status, grants, and donations… am going to announce a Creative Expression contest this week which will help launch and fund the healing center so get in on the ground floor, for the pups.
