Cookie monster with spots

my Cici can be pretty picky about her cookies. especially healthy ones. a  month or so ago, we were at a fair nearby Whole Foods and a local gal had a table. She baked her own dog biscuits and was giving out free samples. We chatted and i gave Cici a biscuit to try. She would not eat it. I tried again and still, she was not biting into those peanut butter and something cookies. I figured well, she just does not like peanut butter all that much. She’s more of a meat eating gal. Kind of embarrassing though.

Yesterday, we were at Whole Foods and these kind people there took Cici for a walk and gave her some dog treats of the non-healthy kind. She loved the dog bone shaped cookies while I worried about her eating them. I am currently giving her a special kind of SPIRULINA to counteract all of the bumps, cysts and growths that have recently developed all over her body. A vet wanted to surgically remove them but I prefer a more holistic method, hence the BIOPREP. More about this in a later blog post. Suffice it to say here, Cici has some health issues that we are addressing and that the Bioprep worked a few years ago to eliminate a growth on her toe.

well, NO SUCH PROBLEM with Austin and Kat CBD infused Wellness Dog Biscuits Peanut Butter and Apple. Cici has scarfed up these cookies with all of the enthusiasm of a happy cookie monster doggie. She thinks they are very tasty and I love that they are good for her.  shhhhhh, do not tell her that they are good for her.

HOW CLEVER to pack a wellness punch into a doggie bite-sized snack. With no eggs, dairy, gluten or preservatives, these cookies offer oatmeal, coconut oil (CICI LOVES COCONUT OIL) and turmeric, a great anti-inflammatory and digestive aid. The organic, cold-pressed CBD Hemp oil is also an anti-inflammatory plus it supplies all of the good Omega 3, 6, 9 oils that doggies need.

And then there is cinnamon, maple, molasses, flax seed, probiotics, along with the oatmeal, apples and peanut butter. What a blend of goodness. No wheat or corn flour either, oat and rice flour and almond meal to hold these yummy for the tummy goodies all together.

i have rarely, if ever, seen my dog eat up cookies that were labeled healthy in any way like she has eaten these. She just doesn’t seem to enjoy the others but she is a big fan of Austin and Kat’s cookies and wishes there were an unlimited supply for her to eat.

austinandkatbiscuit

And here’s the kicker, initially, Kat, the creator baker of these sweet things initially made these cookies for her senior doggie, Brady. And Cici is no spring chicken at the ripe old age of 10 herself. Kat also has a puppy named Austin who has enjoyed the health benefits of these snacks, too. Read all about their journey in Maine here.

And what are you waiting for, go get your doggies some treats. OK, Halloween is over but that’s ok. Now, it is time for some goodies for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Make great paw stocking stuffers. Be sure to tell Austin and Kat we sent you.

V-day gifts for pet parents

Every parent loves to show off photos/pictures of their sweet angels including pet parents. You can hire a photographer, painter or artist to create a custom image and present this gift to the pet parent of your choice.  You may have to be sneaky about it but that is part of the fun, right.  You can also put a photo of your loved one’s pet on a t-shirt, mug or other item.

http://positively.com/2013/02/06/photography-matters/

Recently, Cici and I met with Deanna Fuller who took photos of us at the park. Below are just a few of the shots. I think she did a great job, what do you think?  If you live in the Monterey Bay area and need a photographer, email me and I’ll put you in touch.

And if you want your loved one to have more than just one keepsake, how about giving them a video camera that they can take videos of their pride and joy and show off regularly?

With the Sony HD video camera, they could capture a day-in-the-life of their pet … Sony’s Action Cam ($269.99) is a great way to capture that footage in high-quality and play back to the family in real-time with its WiFi capability.

find out what their pet’s habits are when no one is home.

I’m dreaming of a white cookie (monster)

must be nice to have your own personal cookie dispenser like Cici has (ME), all you have to do is look sad and persist and voila, cookies rain down upon you… happy dog…

she looks at me and ALL she see is FOOD, Cookies, Treats, yummy !!!!  (one track doggie mind/focus)… guess what’s on Cici’s bucket list… COOKIES… do you think she is Cookie obsessed? (YES)… when did her cookie obsession begin? (At birth or when I adopted/rescued her)… is there a cure for cookie obsession? (Yes, more cookies)… do you ever feel like a Pez/cookie dispenser ? (yes)  a power wielding cookie tyrant?  (yes, NO cookies for you today, bad dog !  Seinfeld soup nazi style) …

I’m dreaming of a white cookie, just like the ones I used to eat…

I’m dreaming of a white Cookie
Just like the ones I used to eat
Where the frosting glistens,
and puppies listen
To hear biscuits made of meat

I’m dreaming of a white Cookie
With every sniff I wish I could bite
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Cookies be white

I’m dreaming of a white Cookie
With every sniff I wish I could bite
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Cookies be white

I’m dreaming of a white polka dot Cookie Monster… (with black spots)

just like the one I rescued from Las Vegas in 2007

when Sin City beckoned

I hastened to get her safe

and to feed her Cookies Forever and Ever and Ever

12 days of holiday gifts for your pets

All I want for xmas is …

Fifty-six percent of dog owners say they’ll buy their pets a gift this Christmas, but only 48 percent of cat owners plan a gift.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/08/pet-presents-holiday-season_n_1081502.html

Just over half of American pet owners will buy gifts for their pets this holiday season, and they’ll spend an average of $46 on their animals, with toys and treats topping the list, according to a new AP-Petside.com poll.

Sixty-eight percent of pets getting gifts can look forward to a toy, 45 percent to food or another treat, 8 percent new bedding, 6 percent clothing, 3 percent a leash, collar or harness and 3 percent new grooming products, the poll showed. (Some pets will get more than one gift.)

Sixty-two percent of U.S. households have pets, according to a 2011 survey by the American Pet Products Association (APPA). For many of those furry friends, life is quite good.

http://www.mnn.com/family/pets/questions/what-are-some-fun-gift-ideas-to-help-spoil-my-pet-this-christmas

1. Doggie wreath with toys and bones

http://familyfun.go.com/crafts/crafts-by-type/animal-bug-crafts/animal-themed-crafts/cat-dog-crafts/dog-bone-wreath-662113/

2. Toys from Ruff Gear

Cici is not a big toy dog but she loves playing with the square ball… the shape is fun, I stuffed it full of treats, she is always up for food, and she had to wrestle with it to get the treats out.  she also liked the turnup, plays with it too.

http://www.ruffwear.com/SquareBall?sc=2&category=14

3. Toys from Quaker Pet’s Sherpa travel gear and resources for senior dogs (we will be devoting another whole blog post to senior gear so stay tuned)

Quaker Pet’s Sherpa line of travel products offer a great variety of items and several pet-friendly travel resources on their site at http://www.sherpapet.com
They also offer the new Hear Doggy! toys are great for dogs that chew on their toys.  the Hear Doggy “Flatties” (since they don’t have the stuffing)  are available in Rabbit, Skunk and Deer. And these ultrasonic toys come with a squeaker only the dog can hear, so you can enjoy a “Silent Night” while your pup is having a blast!  Tuned to an ultrasonic
range in the 24-28 KHz frequency, each Hear Doggy! squeaker is out of human
hearing range. Visit  Petsmart, Petco or online at www.republicofpaws.com.

4.  Stuff stockings full of your pooch’s favorite bones

5. Earthbath’s Green Tea travel wipes are great stocking stuffers for dogs and cats.

6.  How about a gift for you and your pooch. You can order pet food online and get it delivered right to your door. You can order through AdoptaShelter.com and as an added bonus have the animal rescue/shelter of your choice receive a monetary reward, too.

Or order through Mr. Chewy’s… not all dog food companies are listed yet (for instance, Dr. Harvey’s and Honest Kitchen are not) but many different types of kibble are… and we ordered some Stella and Chewy’s raw dehydrated lamb and Ziwi Peak, both very high quality foods. And the best part is having the products delivered to your home, price discounts are nice, too. They also offer dog treats (Cici’s favorites include Old Mother Hubbard and Zuke’s) and other goodies for cats, too. You can call 1-800-Mr-Chewy or visit their website…

7.  Martha Stewart has a whole bunch of homemade gift ideas and instructions

8.  Canine Citizen bag for you and your pooch (stay tuned for another blog post to come)

Carries your dog’s stuff (waste bags/treats/ball) and your stuff too…made in the USA

Cici and I got the gray and violet bag and duh, I thought she was supposed to wear it but it is for humans to wear. Seems lightweight even stuffed with your dog’s stuff and yours. The Citizen Canine is primarily a treat bag (for training treats/rewards/bribes) with a poop bag dispenser built in. The treat compartment makes up the top two-thirds of the bag; the top edge of the pouch is stiffened to remain open for easy access, but closes with a drawstring so the treats stay inside otherwise. The treat portion is also big enough to fit a tennis or similar sized ball (or toy) if your buddy is more inspired by fetch than by food.

Poop bags dispense discreetly. One roll of compostable BioBags comes with the bag. There’s a nifty waist strap and a shoulder strap and there is a Guardian Light for nighttime. Another great feature: a front zippered pocket sized to fit an iPhone (room enough for ID/credit card/cash) AND a back zippered pocket sized for keys, change, or a clicker, so you can go out with the Citizen Canine bag and nothing more. $5 from each purchase goes to Old Dog Haven which takes in senior citizen dogs from shelters and either finds them new homes or provides foster homes for them in their twilight years or months.

The rope dog leash is better than recycled, seems sturdy, long lasting and strong, too. http://www.krebsrecycle.com/

9.  Dr. Harvey’s Power Patties

Cici loves her Dr. Harvey’s Power Patties, one of her favorite treats, made from fresh, raw green tripe. The patties are easily digestible, add beneficial Vitamins and Minerals, digestive enzymes and good usable protein and essential fatty acids to a dog’s diet. Tripe is considered one of the most complete foods for carnivores and are very popular in Europe.www.drharveys.com

Cici could probably just eat Power Patties all day and nothing else… Cici’s Power Patty doggie diet… the treats for champions…

10.  A new doggie bed, your choice, there are many options, round, square or rectangle… there are chew proof ones, eco friendly, so many to choose from… I’ve been thinking about getting Cici a mattress from a baby crib

11.  Aromatherapy gift basket for your pet…could include your dog’s favorite (or yours) doggie shampoo, along with a bathing sponge and rubber duck and some aromatherapy sprays/spritzes for your pooch

12.  Bake something special. Pick up one of many dog-treat cookbooks and make a special treat for your pooch that you know is made of top-quality ingredients.

Ace’s Favorite Cheesy Dog Biscuits

1 1/2 cups rice/oat flour
1 1/4 cups grated cheddar cheese
1/4 pound buter
1 clove garlic — crushed
1 pinch salt
1/4 cup Almond Milk — or as needed

Grate the cheese into a bowl and let stand until it reaches room temperature. Cream the cheese with the softened buter, garlic, salt and flour. Add enough milk to form into a ball.

Chill for 1/2 hour. Roll onto floured board. Cut into shapes and bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes or until slightly brown, and firm.

Christmas Carob Mint Dog Cookies

Mix all ingredients and roll out onto a floured surface to approximately ¼ inch thick. Cut with bone shape or holiday cookie cutters and position on a cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for 25 to 30 minutes until lightly browned. Cool the dip cookies halfway into melted carob or spoon the carob icing over half of each cookie. where have all the cookies gone?

after three days of nonstop eating (a marathon)… cici wants to know:

(sung to where have all the flowers gone)…where have all the cookies gone? (in my belly) long time nibbling… where have all the cookies gone? long time ago (3 minutes or less)…  where have all the cookies gone? gone to belly every one… oh when will they ever return? oh when will they ever return?

holiday treats for your dog

Next week is my birthday and Thanksgiving. Everyone will be feasting, eating turkey or tofurky and other goodies. So what about your pets? Do you feed your furry friends anything special for the holidays?

Here are a few tasty treats that Cici found to be simply droolicious…

Zuke’s Mini Naturals made with Wild New Zealand Rabbit

I know that Cici would have a lot of fun chasing rabbits, but she LOVED these tasty morsels, made from an environmentally friendly protein source, low in calories and YUMMY. While Cici loved the taste sensation, I love that all of the treats are

  • Wheat-free, corn-free and soy-free
  • Made in the USA

The Mini Naturals also come in Chicken, Salmon, and Peanut Butter flavors but Cici thinks the Wild Rabbit just hit the right spots (the ones in her tummy)… Flavors that dogs crave and rave about.

Now, Cici is a BIG Cookie monster who Loves to eat cookies, so she also taste tested the Turkey n Taters Mini Bakes biscuits from Zuke’s… and scarfed them down, too…  She is very picky about her cookies, too and some she will just leave on the floor but not these. She ate them up in record time.  Zuke’s also offers Chicken n Cherryz and Peanut Butter and Blueberryz.

Ingredients:

Ground Oats, Rice Bran, Turkey, Potatoes, Oat Fiber, Blackstrap Molasses, Oil Blend (sunflower, olive and canola), Natural Vegetable Flavors

Most surprising, she even devoured the cookies WITHOUT any meat in them. Zuke’s SuperFood Organic Dog Biscuits… Very Berryz… They also offer Mean Greenz and Health Nutz. I can tell you that when I gave her some real blueberries the other day with her yogurt, she spit them right out. But not these cookies, she devoured them with all of the zest she could muster. And she can muster up quite a lot of doggie zeal for cookies, let me tell you.

Ingredients:

Organic Ground Oats*, Organic Ground Barley*, Blueberries, Cranberries, Potatoes, Oat Fiber, Organic Blackstrap Molasses*, Oil Blend (sunflower, olive and canola), Beets, Raspberries, Cherries, Blackberries, Natural Vegetable Flavors.
Yummy treats for your pooches is just a click away.
Why is Zuke’s called Zuke’s you might wonder, strange name, huh.  Well, there actually is a REAL DOG named ta da Zuke…

The company began on a hike with Zuke in 1995.  He’d become exhausted and was given a piece of energy bar and he perked right up. The light dawned and heavens opened up and Zuke’s was born with healthy, all–natural treats.  Zuke’s treats are all formulated to provide the specific nutrients your cat or dog needs. Wow… Zuke’s even offers a money back guarantee on everything they sell.

and they are eco friendly, too…

Wind Power

Every box of Mini Bakes Biscuits and Superfood Biscuits are made in a manufacturing facility that is 100% wind powered. And they pay employees to leave the car at home and ride their bikes or scooters to work. The offices are powered with 100% green electricity.

Patrick Meiering, Founder and Head Bone Maker and Zuke’s (the dog) pet parent sure knows how to give pet parents what they and their pets want. Tasty Top Quality eco friendly treats. Woof !

pumpkins and costumes and desserts, oh my

who else but Rachael Ray would have a pumpkin carved with her dog’s face on it???

some people are saying that wearing an Occupy Wall Street related costumes are THE cool costumes this Halloween…  people could dress up as a mean cop, banker, a corporation, a 1% greedy pig, clueless GOP politician, a cash cow and/or a protester…

http://theweek.com/article/slideshow/220443

Cici wanted me to let you know about the messages that she is considering to have on her signs for her costume:

I am the 1% of pit bulls that has a good home

walk a few miles in my paws…

humans judge me by my looks

sub-humans abandon, abuse, fight, and neglect me

sub-humans kill me

humans hate me because I’m adorable

humans say mean things about me

humans lie about me

sub-humans use me to pretend they are tough

pit bulls for peace

pit bulls against  fat cats

cici speaks: occupy the bed, gets better food than my mama, occupy the chair, occupy the fridge, hah !

please do not dress your dogs up like these people did on Wendy Williams show

http://gawker.com/5853969/its-time-to-stop-dressing-up-your-pets-for-halloween

Beware of these dogs, trick or treat…

a fun treat for any doggie snack time are these meaty cupcakes… for Halloween and other fall/autumn holidays, you could substitute sweet potatoes for the regular taters…

http://doggydessertchef.com/2011/09/23/meatloaf-muffins/

you can also make some Halloween dog cookies with pumpkin and peanut butter… you can substitute rice or other flour if you do not want whole wheat…

http://www.dogguide.net/blog/2011/10/dog-video-of-the-day-halloween-dog-cookie-recipe/

PLUS, you can make pumpkin chocolate recipes for snacks (for humans/kids)…YUM-O…
