Yes, Vick has a dog

maybe the world is coming to an end…

“…’As a father, it is important to make sure my children develop a healthy relationship with animals.’

‘I want to ensure that my children establish a loving bond and treat all of God’s creatures with kindness and respect,’ he added.

‘Our pet is well cared for and loved as a member of our family.’

‘This is an opportunity to break the cycle. To that end, I will continue to honor my commitment to animal welfare and be an instrument of positive change.’

It is a travesty of justice for M. Vick to have a dog. Why? Read The Lost Dogs book by Jim Gorant.

Vick served time for the federal charges of “Conspiracy to Travel in Interstate Commerce in Aid of Unlawful Activities and to Sponsor a Dog in an Animal Fighting Venture.” And, while his participation in dog fighting and the death by hanging of some of his dogs was a sentencing consideration, he did not serve time for animal cruelty.  He should have been. Should have been banned from animal ownership EVER again.

“You would have to have something deeply wrong with you not to be thoroughly disgusted at the prospect of Michael Vick taking in a pet dog. Decent people feel that this man — who did not merely run a dogfighting ring, but personally hanged dogs, drowned them and beat them to death — should be prevented from getting anywhere near an innocent creature. If I had my way, I’d keep him away from human beings.”

“Vick and two associates, Purnell Peace and Quanis Phillips, “thought it was funny to watch the pit bull dogs belonging to Bad Newz Kennels injure or kill the other dogs.” The report also states that the trio executed approximately six dogs by hanging and drowning. The hanging deaths occurred “by placing a nylon cord over a 2×4 that was nailed to two trees located next to the big shed.” The men drowned the others “by putting the dogs’ heads in a five-gallon bucket of water.” Dogs that didn’t perform well were killed. Family pet dogs were placed in the fighting ring as trained pit bulls “caused major injuries” to the pets. And these are just a few of the acts of brutality that Vick participated in.

“Michael Vick tortured many dogs over and over for years. The horrors that these animals were subjected to are unimaginable. And now Vick owns a dog. Do you think someone capable of committing so many unspeakable acts of cruelty against animals can change? Do you think Vick should own a dog?”

Who would give him a dog? What have his children been taught?  I hope we are wrong for the sake of the new puppy but we have seen no real repentence, and heard no real apologies.  Does not bode well that Vick kept owning a dog a secret, unwilling to bear the public scrutiny, until he was outted with a twitter photo. We don’t know where the dog came from, its age, its breed or even its name.

“Best Friends is often asked if we think Vick should be allowed to own another dog. While his eligibility for dog ownership is a matter of law, imagine, if you would, what it would be like reading through a potential dog adoption application from Michael Vick:

  • Have you had a dog before? Yes
  • If yes, how many? Lots
  • Do you still have a dog(s)? No
  • If you have had dogs in the past, please let us know their current disposition. Dead or confiscated by federal authorities.
  • If you no longer have other dogs, please let us know what happened to them. Some I sold to dog fighters, some I had my cousin electrocute or shoot, some I personally strangled, drowned or body-slammed to death.
  • Why do you want to get a dog at this time? Because I served my time and kids want a dog.

OK, thank you, Michael. We’ll get back to you on your application.”

“…the pit bulls Vick once owned are making a comeback of their own, though theirs has been a much slower, steadier climb.  Take the case of Little Red. Three years ago, she would race to the nearest corner and cower, her face buried against the wall, at the sight of any human or dog. Or Ellen, who would growl at anyone who came near her, especially if they dared glance over at her food dish.

“Both dogs had such bad problems, experts said, they’d be better off dead.

“These days, though, Little Red wags her tail a mile a minute and is almost inseparable from her new, best buddy – a cattle dog mix named Google. And Ellen, a tannish-brown bundle of energy, still loves her food but loves her visitors even more – smothering them with kisses as soon as they walk through the door.”

Vicktory Dogs video

“Despite spending 19 months in prison for running an illegal interstate dog fighting business, Vick hasn’t expressed a shred of empathy toward the dogs he brutalized and killed. And rather than talk about the horrors of dog fighting, he has consistently chosen to focus on the consequences of getting caught. In a nutshell, his actions are self-serving. We’ve seen little remorse and even less compassion. And let’s not forget, he caused unspeakable suffering to hundreds of innocent dogs. Frankly, the ASPCA has serious concerns about Vick’s ability to be a responsible pet parent.”

Happy Vicktory dog day

On April 25th, 2007, police served a warrant in Surry, Va. The day before, Michael Vick’s cousin, Davon Boddie, was arrested on drug charges and listed the house as his address. The police and animal-control officers found 66 dogs and what appeared to be a dog-training complex of dark-painted buildings in the woods just behind the house owned by M. Vick. Police obtained another warrant and seized the dogs.

This photo is of the dogs rescue from the property. Thankfully, there were people who began the fight for the V Dogs lives. And thus began the journey for a collective group of dogs who would change the perception people had of pit bulls and fighting dogs and the laws that would one day open doors for countless dogs worldwide.

It all started on this day in 2007.

Happy 5th year anniversary to all of the Vicktory dogs, their pet guardians, foster parents and trainers, all of the folks who have loved them and been with them every step of their amazing journeys… BadRap, Best Friends, Our Pack, Monterey SPCA and others, the dogs could not have made it without ALL OF YOU.

If you have not read the book about these dogs, it is time to honor the dogs by getting a copy of The Lost Dogs by Jim Gorant and reading it or giving it as a gift to your local shelter, a friend or loved one. This book will warm your heart and uplift your spirit. Yes, there are a few rough paragraphs to get through. But in the end, the story is one of tremendous courage, triumph and spirit. Against all odds, despite PETA and the Humane Society and others insistence that the dogs be euthanized, most of the dogs have not only survived but are thriving in homes with other dogs, cats, children and continue to inspire others. Eight of the dogs have become therapy dogs, visiting sick people and reading with children, have won awards and given the key to the city. A few of the dogs have passed onto the Rainbow Bridge. Some of the pet guardians do speaking engagements and events. And a few have rescued other pit bulls who needed love and homes, too.

For Audie, Cherry, Danimal, Ernie, Frodo, Georgia, Ginger, Grace, Halle, Hector, Iggy, Jasmine, Jhumpa, Jonny J, Leo, Little Red, Mel, Oscar, Red, Squeaker, Stella, Teddles, Uba, Ziggy  and all of the other brave dogs…

Oscar just passed his CGC. He is an official Canine Good Citizen and is now eligible for adoption (has a pending home).

Ginger having her cake and eating her Happy cake, too…

What have you learned from these survivors of cruelty? How has this landmark case influenced your views on evaluating victims of cruelty? What have these dogs taught you about the importance of “seeing the dog, not the story?

pit bulls rule the Internet

The good folks over at Mashable did a great blog post about 10 Animals With More Social Media Fans Than Major Media Outlets pages, http://mashable.com/2011/07/12/animals-social-media/

All is good.

However, they left out all of the good pit bull pages with all of the many thousands if not millions of pit bull fans…

Today is one of four annual Blog the Change Days, where pet bloggers promote their favorite people, organizations, and events that improve the lives of animals in communities and all of the pit bull rescues and pages listed play their part… Send them some love, likes and licks !!! BOL…

This is a good subject for BLOG THE CHANGE… because pit bulls are too often Hairy Puppers who because of dog fighters and a bad reputation given to them by the lame stream media go through Deathly Harrowing experiences.

Of course, the cute and cuddly and funny animals were what they were talking about. And Patrick’s story started off kind of grim, being a Hairy Pupper. Although he is doing great now, about 48 pounds and a happy dog, he had been starved near death and thrown in the trash. Perhaps people who are fans of cute, cuddly and funny pets probably do not want to know about dogs like Patrick nor about pit bulls.

Still, Patrick has the MOST fans of all around the world, around the Internet. He has more Facebook pages and fans than many celebrities, not only more fans than the media pages. Patrick has 60-100 Fb pages … The Patrick Miracle page alone has about 110,000 fans.  How many celebrities have 60-100 facebook pages? And Patrick’s pages are all over the world from Canada, England, France, Germany, to Finland, Sweden, USA, many of the 50 states, and some of those have north and south or specific cities such as North and South Florida, North and South California, Philadelphia, and others.

The Vicktory dogs, former v-dogs, each have their own fb pages, Hector, Handsome Dan, Jhumpa, Cherry Garcia, Audie, and Vicktory 4 Cherry, and others with a few hundred to a few thousand fans each. And of course, we know the Bad Newz that they went through, and survived and are doing great. Seven are now therapy dogs. And many have earned their Canine Good Citizen certificates. They are adopted into loving homes, with kids, other dogs and cats and living a good news life now.

media blame the dogs

My last semester of college, my professor gave me the choice of taking his course on Broadcast News or doing an Independent Study (and do a project). I chose the latter as I had a very busy and full schedule that summer. The assignment was to choose a topic that was controversial and then find articles in newspapers to see how each of them portrayed the topic (this professor and others in the department taught that the myth of objective reporting is a myth and they set out to prove to us that this is true). That broadcast media, in particular, are too busy, and under such tremendous deadline pressure that they often have NO TIME to report the stories they are given. And that each news media does have bias.

Now in the last ten + years that has really become apparent with Fox News. As Jon Stewart joked on the Daily Show, Fox News listeners are lied to on a regular and consistent basis. Fox news listeners are the most consistently misinformed viewers. Fox News turns into a lying dynasty when PolitiFact checks the news network for false statements

Why do I preface this post with Fox News and media bias? Well, two reasons. Over the weekend, M. Vick signed autographs in New Jersey and people actually paid for his signature while protesters outside were cordoned off from peacefully protesting which led 7Live TV to question whether he was punished enough and should be left alone.

7 Live Should Michael Vick be left alone? Has he been punished enough?

Protesters heckle Vick during an autograph signing msn.foxsports.com

Some of the comments made:

No, read the Lost Dogs Book by Jim Gorant

no, for Ginger, Mel, Cherry Garcia, Red, Stella, Handsome Dan, Little Red, the little red dog, Hector, Jasmine, Jhumpa, Jonny Justice, Georgia, and all of the other dogs Vick tortured and injured who still suffer and for all of the dogs he murdered with his bare hands buried on the property.

When Ginger first came to Stacy’s home, she was 28 pounds, would not eat and hid out a lot behind furniture. She was terrified of people and Stacy had a difficult time getting her to cross any threshold. Ginger had door issues. It didn’t ma…tter whether it was a front or back door. Ginger just did not want to go inside. She’d hunker down on the ground. For some reason, a lot of the dogs had issues with doorways. And it took a long time to get Ginger used to new situations and environments. She would just shake and hide.

Mel was used as a bait dog, due to his small size and mild temperament. He was likely muzzled when he was thrown into the ring with other dogs being trained to fight. He was not one of those that Bad Newz Kennels terminated — sometimes by drowning or hanging. But for the first year of Mel’s life, if he saw a human being, it meant something terrible was going to happen to him.

What kind of punishment has he endured? Others who were arrested for shop lifting paid more than he has. He not only engaged in an illegal activity, he murdered innocent animals. If he had come out as advocate against dog-fighting and became a true spokesman for battle against this abuse, gave up his well-paying career, then maybe he would redeem himself in my eyes. He didn’t just make a mistake, he committed a crime, multiple times and with others.

The point is that he committed a violent crime and still pretty much got away with murder. It sends the message that dog fighting is something you can do if you have enough money for lawyers.

Peace, who also was convicted in the case, said there were times he suggested that dogs unwilling to fight be given away, but that Vick said “they got to go,” meaning be killed. The dogs were killed by shooting, hanging, electrocution and drowning, and in at least one instance, according to one of the witnesses, when Vick and Phillips killed a red pit bull by “slamming it to the ground several times before it died, breaking the dog’s back or neck.

No and No! Unfortunately not enough people know the whole truth about Michael Vick and what he did to those dogs! If they took the time to find out the whole story I would hope that it would make them not want to forgive this man! Yes he is a football star but do you want your son to grow up to be like him, torturing and killing innocent animals, I hope not as far as I am concerned anyone who murders dogs for fun has not place in society much less profiting from his celebrity. Would you want someone like him arouond your children?

Dog fighting goes hand in hand with gambling, drugs, prostitution. Many of us will never let go because that is the whole point. Vick did not get the punishment he deserved and he will remain an example of what needs to change in our society. No, Michael Vick should never be left alone for what he did. Not only did he abuse dogs by fighting, shooting, electrocuting, hanging, drowning them but he gave scandal to many youngsters who look up to him. Thus the plague of abuse to pitbulls or some other breeds …burning, cutting, fighting, etc by youngsters in inner city areas. That will last for generations. So as long as pit bulls are abused he should not be left alone.

@7LiveOnline M. Vick should not be made a hero – he is no hero and doesn’t merit the hype being used to clean up his rep.

The ability to activly cause pain suffering and death is not altered by 18 months in prison. If it was…every seriel killer in the world would be simply reformed in prison and then released. No MV needs to live by what he has done just like everyone else. Fame and fortune should not be part of the package.

The only thing this ABUSER is sorry for is getting caught. While in jail his Spin Doctors began trying to restore his image….all for one reason…to play football again. But Hell…we don’t care to punish Priests for molesting children….animals have NO CHANCE for justice! Has he been punished enough for murdering dogs? HELL NO! (See my current main photo! ) He’s getting off EASY because he is a “sports celebrity”!!!!!! He’s still making millions, as if nothing ever happened!

I don’t think he’s sorry at all. He’s just sorry he was caught. after what he did he feels bad cause he can’t have a dog….obviously someone who learned something!!!! Yeah let us forget and move on so he can get a dog….oh his last pet dog he tortured and murdered. Maybe all his supporters can lend him their dog….didn’t think so.

Vick was no casual lets go watch a dog fight one night kindda guy. He was DEEPLY INVOLVED….which means he KNOWS MANY MORE DEEPLY INVOLVED. If Vick ever has the balls to start naming names because he feels his actions are truly wrong….then that POS may start earning back respect. But he ain’t got the character or BALLS to name names!

Vick was not convicted according the Virginia Animal Cruelty laws. Instead he was indicted in Federal Court and pled guilty to one (1), I repeat, one count of “Conspiracy to Travel in Interstate Commerce in Aid of Unlawful Activities and to Sponsor a Dog in an Animal Fight Venture”. Vick pled guilty to ONE count of “Conspiracy to Travel in Interstate Commerce in Aid of Unlawful Activities and to sponsor a dog fighting venture”.

Hardly worthy of the 11 dogs he and company savagely tortured before they killed them and the others used as bait dogs and fighters. I have seen many people say “they were just dogs”. Yes they were “just” dogs. If Vick and co had done to humans what they did to those defenseless dogs, they would be mentioned in the same breath as Dahlmer, Bundy, Manson and the other who’s whos of notorious serial killers.

And one of Vick’s brilliant fans called me a white female dog name and racist because what else could she answer to the facts against Vick…

a few people responded: this has nothing to do with what color Vick is! I would be against him if he was as white a sheet of typing paper! I do not CARE if someone if black or white or purple! I DO care if they mutilate, maim, torture, and abuse animals and Vick IS guilty of all of that and worse. He is piece of crud and should still be in prison. No, he should not be left alone and he has NOT been punished enough!

Also, this weekend Karen Grace / KENS 5 asked if dangerous dogs (pit bulls of course) can be rehabilitated.

She writes:

Children have died in their jaws and police have shot them in self defense.

(no bias showing here, right)

Of course the photo of the dog does not even look like a pit bull… but hey, for sure Karen Grace has never ever met/seen a pit bull and would not know one if she got licked in the face by one.

I wrote to Karen Grace via email and twitter… kgrace@kens5.com @newzdiva and her cohort who said that Ms Grace looked at the issue @SarahLucero

I will also send them this:

Double dog dare ya to read and/or print this comment… The real question should be can dangerous people be rehabilitated… animal abusers, for instance. dog fighters, puppy mill breeders, people who are cruel to animals, especially pit bulls… who starve them, throw them down the trash, neglect, abandon and/or torture them…

Animal abusers have a long history of abusing animals and eventually HARM HUMANS… and meanwhile they are not convicted, given a slap on the wrist for horrendous crimes against animals and continue to escalate their crimes.  And 5 million INNOCENT pets die every year for no reason other than human beings are lazy and irresponsible.

And what about psychopaths like Michael Vick who killed pit bulls with his bare hands, tortured them, drowned and electrocuted them and threw his own pet dogs into the ring as bait dogs

and yet IF YOU READ the Lost Dogs book by Jim Gorant, go on Facebook to their pages, the former dogs/pit bulls of Michael Vick’s Bad Newz Kennel, deemed to be the MOST VICIOUS PIT BULLS OF THEM ALL have been rehabilitated… some are even therapy dogs and others are living in families with other dogs and cats and kids. Dogs like Handsome Dan, Hector, Cherry Garcia, Mel, Ginger, Jonny Justice, Jhumpa, and others who were so traumatized because they were FORCED to fight for their lives and have the scars to prove it are LIVING  EXAMPLES of pit bulls who are truly heroes.

Why not talk to Richard Hunter, right there in Texas, he and his wife adopted Mel, who lost his bark he was so traumatized by Vick et al and is still terrified of people, doing much better than he was, but making progress every day.  Mel just received his own key to the city of Dallas.

Cherry Garcia was just on TV in Connecticut

Perhaps you should watch the movie Beyond the Myth

and/or listen to Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan…“My kids are around pit bulls every day. In the ’70s they blamed Dobermans, in the ’80s they blamed German shepherds, in the ’90s they blamed the Rottweiler. Now they blame the pit bull.”    Cesar Millan.  “Pit bulls get a bad rap because of irresponsible owners….”

Pit bulls were raised TO BE VERY PEOPLE FRIENDLY and they LOVE PEOPLE… For over 100 years, pit bulls represented America and these dogs were babysitters (Remember Petey, the Little Rascals dog?)

temperament testing reveals that pit bulls score gentler than 121 other breeds Temperament evaluations by the American Temperament Test Society have given pit bull terriers a very high passing rate of 90.6 percent. The average passing rate for the other 121 breeds of dogs in the tests was only a low 77 percent.

Now what does all of these have to do with one another? Hmmmm… Could there be a connection? Bias in the media related to pit bulls and Vick getting off easy leads to more pit bulls being fought and abused and children learning the lesson that if / when you are rich and famous, you can get away with murder and the media blames the dogs instead of their Killers… more abused dogs, more dog fighting, more banning of “dangerous dogs” (Breed Specific legislation), more media madness, and on and on and on the cycle goes around. we all know how that goes right, blame the victim, why hold the responsible party accountable for their actions ????  In America, money talks/walks and gets away with murder…

the vicious pit bull cycle revealed…

Dog Rescue: Cat fight

Update: Sad news… not only has there been a lawsuit with allegations of a stolen dog, but now the organization’s leader, Tamira Thayne, is being accused of misappropriation of funds and other illegal actions. She has been living on the property. There were 150 rescue reps around the country, now there are 25. Shannon Allen, the national rescue coordinator just quit.  And now it seems that the Good Newz Rehab Center is a bust, going belly up.  And who suffers the most, the dogs who DO DESERVE SO MUCH BETTER.

ok, another dog fight has turned into a cat fight… she said vs she said… when the dog poop hits the fan it stinks up the whole entire house … Patrick’s custody battle was settled by a Judge’s verdict … but here I am right smack in the middle of a different situation.  On the one hand, I think with all of the many animals who need homes it seems crazy for people to be fighting over the custody of any one pet. And yet as an animal owner, I know how bonded and attached one gets to a pet. And the more I learn about the situation, the worse it gets.

Ladies, can we please resolve this situation peaceably. Cici’s plea.

With mixed feelings here we go:

It started off innocently enough… someone asked me what I was doing about a situation and I had no idea since I did not know there was a situation…

since I had just interviewed the person that they were asking questions from (and not getting any answers) I offered naively to send the questions directly to the source.

Shocked and appalled I received a very unprofessional, to say the least, answer.

here are the questions:

do not know a thing about this situation in Washington Dogs Deserve Better, a friend is asking questions, see below, can u let me know the answers thanks.

I just found out the story about Joel on Bring Joel Home that your organization took him away from his new owner. Why did you do that? Is Joel still alive? What was your rationale? What are you doing to resolve this horrible issue and the trauma it clearly would cause Joel… who was brought back to life by Dr. Suzanne Fiala. Please explain how this was in the best interest of Joel, which should be your only concern.. the well being of the animal? I am shocked and would greatly appreciate answers. Thank you for honoring your mission of caring about animals.

here is the answer:

Oh, Jesus, yes he’s alive and in a good home…here’s an article written by the good doctor...http://www.psycheducation.org/start/fiala.htm

That might explain a bit of the drama. She changed our adoption contract to say she could pen him, and she made other changes too…so we pulled him and put him in another foster home.

How does sending a link to an article about someone’s mental health eight years ago answer the  questions about taking a dog away from a Doctor who fostered a near death animal back to health and who was in the process of adopting him????

the back story

the entire sad tale from start to finish on CNN:  Animal Rescuers Gone Wrong

One comment of many that I have read sums it up:  No, the drama is because they were responsible for a death of a dog and Dr. Fiala confronted them. A few hours after they were called out for being the cause of a dog’s death, they yanked Joel. Very disturbing, political, and wrong.

Joel was a starving pitbull similar to Patrick prior to being placed in the home of Dr. Suzanne Fiala after which he grew healthy, and in the process was adopted. Shortly after settling in, Joel was taken from Suzanne and her family by the very agency that “rescued” him.

The answer to me seemed below the belt. I have since written back and asked for another reply, answers to questions and suggested DDB get a grip with so much on the line and so far received two responses.

1. They were not responsible for the death of a dog. That’s all lies based on her need for drama and destruction. Joel is in a safe, drama-free home, where he will remain.

2. As the case is in litigation, that’s all I am authorized to say by our attorney. You can post what you’d like. We are a great group and we work very hard for chained dogs. No, we are not perfect. No one is. But we made the right decision in this case, and we will not be going back on that decision.

Now that she has managed to destroy those who wanted to help chained dogs in Seattle, there is no help there for the dogs.

I will continue to help chained dogs to the best of my ability. If people don’t like that, then they may stop asking us for help and deal with it themselves. Simple enough.

Blaming Dr. Suzanne publicly without answering questions

DDB put the link to the article, adoption contract and a note online on their Facebook page which showed Dr. Suzanne’s personal info. WHAT, Seriously?

Photos from DDB Statement regarding Suzanne Fiala and Joel in Washington State  (Note: Cici and I have jpgs evidence)

wanted to post a photo of Joel from DDB site but have not been able to do so but here is one page of the adoption contract where DDB says Dr. Suzanne made changes to it…

WHY NOT COME CLEAN AND ANSWER QUESTIONS????  Instead DDB is banning and deleting comments asking questions ala you know who instead of answering.  Deja blue.

Seems to Cici that Dogs Deserve Better has A LOT AT STAKE HERE and are putting THEIR ENTIRE ORGANIZATION AND REPUTATION on the line by behaving badly making animal advocates question THEIR involvement with DDB.

Since DDB is raising HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS and wants to raise MILLIONS to purchase and renovate the Michael Vick property, is planning to open in July and is doing tons of PR in order to fundraise, this situation has given me and many pause, to say the least.  I have to speak out especially since I just interviewed the founder, Tamira Thayne and have given her group PR on this blog.   I know how overwhelming it can be to do publicity and to do a HUGE project. Not an excuse for bad behavior, just a context. I guess this would be one way to bail. Not wise nor professional in any way. And who gets to suffer? The doggies.

As it is plenty of people have had reservations about the project. Since dogs sniff with their noses, they will be able to smell what happened on the property, the blood, carcasses of dead dogs, and so on, I won’t go into the gore and graphics. For the story, read the Lost Dogs book by Jim Gorant. How will dogs respond to that negative energy and vibes?  Certainly, NONE of the former v-dogs will EVER go back there to revisit their horrendous past. And frankly, I was invited to go there but I declined. I would not bring Cici there and subject her and myself to that. Still, I gave Tamira and the project the benefit of the doubt. But color Cici and I appalled beyond belief now that we are hearing about this situation. So imagine how others are feeling, too.

DDB seems to be stonewalling and it is not going well…

from Dogs Deserve Better
This page is reserved for FANS of Dogs Deserve Better. All those interested in hearing our side of of the Joel story are welcome to visit our notes page. This is all that we are at liberty to post at this time. The story will be told in its entirety once the the legal proceedings are over.

the DDB Washington chapter was closed a few days ago.  They were running as an unregistered NPO. That begs the question of what was being done with the donations and what other compliance issues there may have been. If DDB Washington was not registered with the Secretary of State in Washington, yet running as an NPO and have shut their doors, what happened to the donations?  Is the Attorney General looking into this?  What about the rescued animals? where are they and what happens to them?

Other comments:

This public “dog fight”, will ruin DDB’s reputation if not destroy the organization…

Every day animal rescues and groups are shut down because of pettiness and infighting. Dogs lose. Volunteers lose. Everyone loses. Lose lose lose.

The razor’s edge of having power, influence, arrogance without the character and integrity to manage such responsibility.

am very disturbed at the possibility that someone’s treatment for a medical problem is in any way being held against them, or published to others. This in no way answers the questions being asked and goes back to the dark ages when mental illness was stigmatized…

What saddens me the most is this puts all their state chapters at risk of losing credibility.  now you start to question the group as a whole and I hope DDB central is realizing the damage they are doing to the entire group.

It is now eight weeks since Joel was taken. If he is happy and healthy, perhaps he should stay where he is. But there are other concerns and questions.

The way you are handling this issue with Joel is sad, and your actions and non-answers are tarnishing your own name. You have done so much good and achieved so much.  Please reconsider and come to an amicable settlement in this case. For Joel’s sake and for all the people who have supported you over the years. Our reputation, at the end of the day is all we have. Do not tarnish yours any further.

What a shame. Fosters or potential fosters will think twice, donors – like I am… will really think twice and wonder where will the money will go…

A petition to Bring Joel Home was started.

Open letter to Ms. Tamira Ci Thayne and Dogs Deserve Better

From Suzanne J. Fiala, MD

Dear Ms. Thayne,

I have followed your postings regarding the increasing pressure to hold yourselves accountable regarding the taking of Joel and your questionable activities, with interest. As you and I both know, there are many dark details regarding this story and I for one have nothing to hide. Can you say the same?

Your attempts to disparage my integrity and credibility by posting a link to my article, “Normal is a Place I Visit”, published in JAMA in 1993, are particularly disappointing. To quote one of my friends, “Is that the best you got?” First and foremost, thank you for opening a side discussion regarding mental illness, which, by the way, afflicts one in five Americans. It is a ‘cause’ of mine about which I am as passionate as I am about animal welfare. You see, it is the last foothold of public prejudice and stigma perpetrated by the ignorant, as a means of trying to discredit and humiliate those of us born with a genetic illness.

As my article states, Ms. Thayne, were I afflicted with breast cancer or cerebral palsy, would you attempt to use those things against me as well?
The fact is that I am incredibly proud of my ‘coming out’ article regarding personal struggles with mental illness. Though the facts in that article remain true, my life eight years later has moved on to a more integrated ‘whole’ and my daily life experiences are quite different. But to be published in one of the two the premier medical journals of the world with a readership in the millions is no small feat. My article received more public attention and praise when it was published than any other first-person article in JAMA before or since. And it is still used today at medical schools and psychiatry residencies as a training tool around the country. So thank you for bringing it up; I am most proud of that article, and I continue to be an outspoken advocate about the destigmatization of mental illness and promoting education of the ignorant about this very important issue.  Clearly you have not been so enlightened, and your actions have only highlighted the importance of the cause.

My credentials, Ms. Thayne, are as follows: I went from being a welfare mother of two, to becoming an articulate, educated, and beloved physician and productive member of my community. I have six children, the youngest three adopted children from eastern Europe, all of them older, at-risk children.

I have accomplished twice as much as many people do in a lifetime, and have had to work three times as hard to get there. And I have twenty five years of education, graduated from the top medical school and residency in the country with honors and special recognition, and was elected chief resident of my residency training program. And I am also an animal lover and advocate of a lifetime.

As to your bio, Ms. Thayne, I do believe and know that you have done much good for suffering animals, and for that I commend you. But dare I say, you have lost your way somewhere, and deception, arrogance and considering yourself above the laws of decency and what is morally right have taken a front seat. We both love animals and share a desire to protect and defend. However, we disagree on this point: the ends DO NOT justify the means.

As we both know, I was a praised and favored, tireless volunteer for DDB –Washington for six months, from October 2011 through March 2011. I have the evidence, because I have saved every FB posting praising me, every email and text; along with all the questionable things that followed. How is it that the Washington DDB Rep Kelly Page was my patient, my friend, and my fan for years, had been out to my house numerous times, and entrusted me with ELEVEN DDB pitbull/mixes in need for fostering, and enthusiastically supported my adoption of Joel, until I dared to complain?

And how is it that my adoption contract (a one-way contract NOT requiring a countersignature, as is evident by both copies of my correspondence as well as by your contract yourself), should happen to be altered and revoked just one week after I blew the whistle on DDB?

Rather than attacking me personally, or producing a contract that has been clearly altered, how about providing some ANSWERS?

And how about addressing the fact that DDB-Washington collected over $500 in donations for Joel’s care, NONE OF WHICH WENT TO PAY FOR THOSE ITEMIZED EXPENSES? (and yes, I have those documents as well.) Or admitting that your high-priced attorney was breathing down my neck with a written threat the VERY DAY that Joel was taken from daycare, advising me to cease and desist or risk legal proceedings from you? (Yes, I have that document, too.)

Or let’s discuss this: HOW IS IT THAT DDB-Washington solicited charitable contributions within the state of Washington for all of its years in our state, without registering with the Washington Secretary of State’s office as a charity? (I am sure you are aware that this violates the Consumer Protection Act, and is punishable by large fines, not to mention what it does to your credibility.) And that you and DDB, Ms. Thayne, sought to file a charitable org application to the state of Washington ONLY 4 DAYS AFTER MY COMPLAINTS, on April 11, 2011? Is it purely coincidence, or were you perhaps trying to get your affairs in order and clean up your act before we looked further?

I would suggest that your fans from other states check with their state Attorney General/Secretary of State’s office, and I believe they will discover, as I have, that you don’t appear to be registered in ALMOST ANY state as a charitable organization. Yet you continue to solicit funds…as you have for years. That is what I mean when I refer to your arrogance and apparent belief that you are above the law.
Ms. Thayne, I did try my best to resolve this with you privately and amicably. But you have stonewalled me, racked up thousands of dollars in litigation costs (that your supporters mistakenly believe is going to rescue dogs?), and with no end in sight. Is that really where your donors want your money to go? To fight me, one individual, over Joel? Let’s let them decide.

I look forward to your response, and I do hope you have the courage to leave this letter on your website as an open response to the public. If not, I ask you, what do you have to hide? As before, since the day that you seized Joel, I remain open and willing to talk with you as one animal advocate to another. What I want is simple. I want Joel back. One has only to look at our photos, our video, talk to our friends and neighbors, to know that Joel and I belong together. It is as simple as that.

NEVER did you contact me, return my requests for dialogue, respond to my concerns or investigate DDB-Washington, which started this whole chain of events. NEVER did you contact my veterinarian to ascertain what type of pet owner I am, or how I treat my animals. NEVER did your regional rep Marie Belanger get in touch with my contacts, and inestigate my concerns about the doings in Washington state. Had you done so, you would not have found one single person to say a disparaging word about me, and would have found a pile of evidence to support my disillusionment with DDB.

As I have time and am able, I WILL be scanning and posting all of the documents in my files: the misappropriated money by DDB Washington that went ?where exactly, the praise and love I received from DDB reps as a foster, the DDB announcement posting my adoption of Joel, the letter of attack sent by your attorney the day that you took Joel advising me to back off, and the perjured comments by Ms Page, Washington DDB rep, and her chums that were filed in court 2 weeks ago, along with copies of evidence refuting their lies one point at a time.

You see, Ms. Thayne, I have nothing to fear; because truth and evidence are on my side. What do you have? The misguided judgment to attack my mental health publically, and a forged contract. I for one am comfortable letting public opinion weigh in on this issue.

And by the way, it’s Dr. Fiala, not Ms. Fiala.

I supported myself through school and have 25 years of education. I am very proud of my life and accomplishments, and my achievements stand for themselves. I am a humanitarian, a healer, an advocate for the underserved and the underdogs, and the environment. And I have nothing to hide. Can you say the same? I welcome your response.

the good Doctor and her furry friend Joel that she nursed back to health.

there are MANY pages of evidence/proof from Bring Joel Back Home: 120 pages of scanned documents revealing DDB’s praise of Dr. Fiala UNTIL the day she complained, DDB announcing Joel’s adoption on FB, DDB’s 11th hour application to become a legal Washington charity dated April 11, four DAYS after Dr. Fiala’s complaint (after years of soliciting funds illegally in WA), Comments from Thayne and Belinger, much more

Dear Oprah

Updates: It seems God/Goddess heard our cries and O/Vick heard our comments, because Vick canceled the interview.

It seems Piers Morgan may be doing it, so if you want send him Lost Dogs books, and/or a link to the O comments… scroll down to bottom, pages and pages. yay !!! yipppeee!!!

this should cover all the icko sickos excuses, ok.

Since I do have a Dogtime account but cannot figure out how to login to it and have had no assistance from their support team, this is the comment I was going to make on Leslie Smith’s blog post. My own Dear Oprah letter.

Dear Oprah,

Since you were supposed to have BadRap on your show a little while ago with the dogs and flaked on that, I highly doubt and am very skeptical that you will ask Michael Vick anything but softball b.s. PR crapola.

I am personally sick, disgusted and fed up with hearing about Vick, from HSUS, Oprah and Obama. Am ill almost every day, crying all of the time.

If you are reading this and want to make a difference, please sign the petition on facebook and send it along to all of your friends and relatives.  Also, read others remarks to Oprah here.  You are NOT alone.

You can also write to Oprah’s Executive Producer Sheri Salata on Twitter, @SheriSalata and @Oprah and @OprahWinfreyNetwork and @PiersMorgan and @CNN and @Cnnbrk and @andersoncooper  with the hashtag #Vick

Look at my 4PawsUp page at all of the Victory dogs, and you tell me what kind of a person could torture and kill those dogs FOR SIX YEARS.  NO EXCUSES, Oprah.

I have a pit bull mix that I rescued from out of the hands of a homicidal maniac. Vick is a psychopath and should be in jail and / or a psych hospital.

If you saw the Richard Hunter video from Dallas, Vick showed NO REMORSE and his bodyguard said they don’t care about the dogs.  Video below and for context, this was not the Mayor, but the Mayor Pro Tem Caraway who had no authorization to give the keys to Vick and who has been laughed at and was supposed to get the keys back according to the real Mayor Leppert.

Vick has had THREE+ chances to meet the dog rescuers who’ve lovingly cared for the dogs and has refused.

What is it going to take for America to wake up???  Does Vick have to abuse, kill and maim children / people????  Law enforcement and ASPCA says there is a well documented correlation between people who do horrific things to dogs and then to people.

No one in their right mind could have done the things that Vick did, enjoyed doing, and got a thrill out of doing.

As Hunter said in the interview he did, Vick is MENTALLY ILL. And if he had ANY REMORSE he would give up the names of the dog fighters not just do what he has been mandated to do. There is MUCH he could do but what is he doing but playing football for MILLIONS OF DOLLARS???

It’s all a big show for greedy people.

No, I am DONE with you Oprah. I used to be a BIG FAN of yours, but I AM DONE.  I WILL NOT WATCH OPRAH ANYMORE until you have BEST FRIENDS, BADRAP, Jim Gorant, author of The Lost Dogs and a few of the dogs on your show.  If you do not do that, you are a BIG FAKE.

The audience should have a copy of The Lost Dogs at the very minimum and Oprah, you should read from the book to Vick.  If you let him off the hook, YOU ARE NOT WHO YOU SAY YOU ARE and DEFINITELY NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT LIVING YOUR BEST LIFE !!!!!

I hope I am wrong about you and am praying for a miracle.

Sweet Ginger: Super Dog Sunday

frankly, me and my girl cici do not care about the SuperBowl, it’s only a game, people…

My girl Cici (the polka dot princess above) doesn’t mind sharing the spotlight today with Ginger because of all that girl has been through, but she’s starting to feel a lil left out and wants to know where are the nachos.

This post is part of the Super Dog Sunday First Annual Photo Blog Hop brought to you by All Things Dog Blog.

Sweet Ginger is one Super Dog deserving of recognition. She survived you-know-who and is living a gentle life in Monterey now with her person, Stacy Dubuc (see my blog post with my interview with Stacy, With Love All Things Are Possible). Fyi, The boy dog mentioned had cancer and has since passed onto the Rainbow Bridge.  Whenever I think of Ginger, she still makes me cry. I am glad that she is doing so well now is all I can say.

while I’ve got you here, may I suggest that you read the book The Lost Dogs by Jim Gorant and pass one on to your favorite celebrity, we want to get the word out. Thanks.

update after the SuperBowl:

more about Ginger and the other lost dogs

I never watch football, never been into the game so I don’t know who is playing today nor do I care. I do like beach volleyball, baseball and that’s about it sportswise.  My dog Cici would love to play sports if I was able to teach her although she is completely clueless about playing fetch. She does not get that she has to bring the ball or frisbee back to me. Oh well, she is gifted in other ways and smart, too.  Cuteness, silliness and able to garner much attention for herself. Not bad attributes.

There are supposed to be crazy SuperBowl commercials that people pay millions of dollars to advertise and usually create a lot of controversy. What will it be this year?

Happy Super Dog Sunday !
